Sony promises news on Android 4.3/4.4 plans next week

by XB on 1st November 2013

in Android

kk-android-44Google announced details of its latest and greatest version of Android yesterday in the form of Android 4.4 KitKat. The immediate question that those who have invested in Sony Xperia hardware want to know is whether this update will hit their handset and when.

Of course, we are still yet to hear of definitive timings on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update. Sony recognises it needs to update its customers and therefore tweeted that it plans to give further details at some point next week. This will include “news on: 4.3, 4.4; products & more,” says the tweet. We’ll bring you further information as soon as we have it.

Thanks Ben and ghani!

  • @atWidget

When Sony say that, understand “plans for Z serie… ONLY” XD

  • Nils

Xperia S doesnt get an update above Android 4.1 because Qualcomm didnt publish any driver for Android 4.2 or newer….. You have to accept it unfortnately

  • Phat-t

Yea guys dont blame Sony, blame Qualcomm!!

  • lucasarg

4.4 for 2012-2013 Xperia devices PLZ!

  • Lucian

Guys, get real, this is Sony; Z, Z1 and the Z Ultra will probably be the only phones getting the 4.4 update.

  • george

    SP will get it.

  • Caio Faria

Xperia T NEED receive this update. And that goes straight to 4.4!!!

  • Caio Faria

I also, this Xperia T is very strong, if Sony does not upgrade, I never buy again a Sony smartphone because she simply focuses on the top line.

  • xperiax10.awesome

First flagship was Xperia X10 ;-)

  • Lucian

Damn right, I still have it, right next to my Z1 and after 4 years it has still remained scratchless.

  • Emanuele Ciotti

Android 4.3 for Xperia z1 Next week? ;)

  • santhosh

4.3 for Z, ZL, ZR, SP
    4.4 for Z1 AND Z ULTRA

  • Vitali

SO let’s convice Qualcomm to make a driver for android 4.3 or 4.4! Let us all the xperia S users send an Email or whatever to Qualcomm and try to convice them.. I mean don’t be lazy.. let’s try.. will it work?

oh and btw in previous post they wrote about android 4.4: “Amongst the changes includes Project Svelte, which is Google’s effort to make Android run on low memory devices (think 512MB RAM).” that means that even devices that worse than xperia S will get this update? xD

why am I wasting my time to write this this will never happen… xD

  • sammyl

I hope my ZR will get it!

  • Alejandro Zuñiga

No i think that all the 2012 and 2013 smartphones gonna get the update

  • They better do good on this update. A lot of people will be complaining if they get this wrong, including me

  • superfly

I dropped mine once a week for 4 years never once had an issue

  • Xperia X10 is from Sony Ericsson
    Xperia S form Sony

  • Micro

    I’m in

  • Senay Mehreteab

Sony please update xperia s to 4.3 or 4.4. My phone has a problem after update 6.2.B.1.96. So i hope to get some good news for xperia s fans.

  • Micro

my mom’s E is gonna have it and my old S is not :D LOL

  • DeLorean75

I hope you are wrong :-)
I will sell my ZR, if you are right.

  • Thus why I only buy flagships.

  • DeLorean75

ZR will be getting 4.3 before the end of the year, I think. 4.4 I don’t know. I hope so. I own a ZR (C5503) too.

  • DeLorean75

    I agree

  • kenobi

Android 4.4 for Xperia P, cmon Sony :D

  • Hambeast

Because barely anything that sold well used S3? Xperia S and One S were about the only two. Honestly, just upgrade your phone.

  • Hambeast

T/V will go to 4.3. You’ll be waiting til next year though. Sony always offer 2 updates for high end phones. You got 4.1 and you’ll get 4.3.

  • Vitali

Upgrade to what?… are u serious.. there`s nothing to upgrade -_-

  • Lucian
  • Caio Faria

Because 4.3? Xperia T has a similar hardware with the Nexus 4. Sony can do this update if she wants!

  • Babylonbwoy

They will show us a beautiful video saying AOSP 4.4 is running on Z1 / ZU but because of proprietary drivers blah blah blah and another semester to wait… We’ve seen that already

  • Babylonbwoy

Convincing Qualcomm ? Are you joking ? Even AOSP’s chief maintainer JBQ had no chance to change anything and had to resign because of the Nexus 4 drivers situation… Do you think they really gives a fuck about S users? Come on.

  • Vitali

but S users are so sad. :C

  • neville chidawanyika

Sony is gonna hurt feelins here. Xperia S and T might get 4.3 but 4.4 how much I doubt that. But since these are flagships they might do something bout it

  • Babylonbwoy

I’m not saying that it is good to not update the driver, just telling the reality. It’s about big money!

  • Vitali

    I understand..
But S users still very sad. :C hit like if you agree

  • Vitali

wait.. whay they loosed 2 billions? what happaned?

  • Issac Gonzalez

LOL at people thinking 2012 phones will get 4.3/4.4. I mean, there are 2013 Xperias that won’t receive 4.2/4.3. I know it sucks, but just don’t get your hopes that high.

  • Babylonbwoy
  • Rizky Maulana

  • Will the Xperia X10 get updated to 4.4? ;)

  • WTF guys! Is “loosed” even a word? I know “loose” and “lose”.

“Loose” is an adjective. Use LOST geez.

  • In a week! Also a new update, that will add 50 Mpx to your camera!

  • Sweet! I read that the next update will also add an i7 processor which would give me an 8 gigabyte resolution to the screen!

  • ray

    How about my ZL?!

  • ray

Hope they provide update for memory card reading. My 8 gb class 10 sd card has been fucked up by my ZL and now became totally unreadable :(

  • Marco Antonio Maza Hernández

    Who want´s 4.3 if 4.4 it´s already out?

  • Clamser

Sony does not care about us, while other brands offer Android 4.3 to their users To us Sony not be yet to finished with 4.2 for that we’ll go to 4.4. please my dear brothers I suggest you we can go to sleep for next year

  • Martin Ambre

    keep dreaming for anymore updates

  • Clamser

Sony does not update for marketing purposes and not the fault of the drivers. Top range are updated up to 10-12 months, average range for 5-6 months, the low end is not updated. Wake up people it is now! Petitions are useless.

  • Rogue

It’s amazing that in 2013 people still believe it’s the Oem who’s responsible for the updates to their phones. I mean yes they have to build the software experience for us but apart from that the Oem has no say smh when will you people stop bashing sony and learn. The fact is that the chip set maker is responsible for updates and if you all don’t know this by now when will you ever know this? Qualcomm is the one who decides which of their chips will get the latest android version not Sony, htc, Samsung or even lg so you people need to relax. When qualcomm decides tostop supporting a chip the Oem is powerless and that’s a reality we the consumer have to come to terms with , So when people like Clamser comes on here to bash Sony he should get his facts straight.

  • Billy de Fretes

Nice try HTC One fans. just get HTC One if you want 4.3 so badly. for me, current 4.2.2 still good enough.

  • Clamser

this does not justify the delay on other manufacturers. I had the SP now I have the Z1

and please be honest not for us but for yourself.

  • osamaH Al-Amri

    It will be like this:
“We are trying our best to ensure that our phones are updated to the latest versions available. So, our super fast developers are working hard to update it as soon as possible.
The update will start rolling out for our Q1 2013 line (Z,ZL,ZR,Tablet Z) in Q4 20163564. Following with the roll of the XZ1 and XZ Ultra on Q1 20163569.”

  • kjmok

dudes, is it really THAT important to get 4.3? i was glad that they didn’t make the 4.3 update for my Xperia Z, all i want is to get my KitKat ASAP.

  • m sacha

didnt sony tweet some bullshit after 4.3 came out saying stay tuned as we are announcing our plans about 4.3 very soon??? haha before today i dont think we have heard anything about 4.3 since that tweet

beginning to lose faith, but i love my z1 too much lol

  • rexperia

Chill out guys! The time is on its way so be patient. Rome doesn’t build in a day, isn’t it???

The Rom Does not build in a day!!! Please tell us how the other manufacturers are still to be updated before sony does not react.

What kind of developers they have them that Sony may have to build at the same time rom these brands??? I like Sony but ………

  • xperiax10.awesome

    I knw, for your info:
First real Sony phone is Xperia Z !!
All previous models were designed during SE days including Xperia S, T, SL, TX, etc..

  • Clamser

Dear friend Rogue advocate of Sony, please see ›below are the saying of
Sony concerning the update. Maybe they have not sought advice before.

Sony post in July 25, 2013

    On Android Jelly Bean 4.3…

Hi everyone, a quick note on our software roadmap…

So, Sony’s Jelly Bean 4.2 upgrade for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL is well
underway* – next up, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z will start receiving 4.2
    from early August.

Yesterday you probably saw Google announce the next version of Jelly Bean
(Android 4.3) – we’re already getting stuck in and can confirm we’ll make 4.3
available for: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and
    Xperia Z Ultra…

We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1
direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure
to follow @SonyMobileNews for all the latest.

If you fancy learning a little bit more about the technical side of our
software development, check out Developer World’s latest piece on how we’re
improving and refining our efforts to bring users new Android versions.

On that note, thank you for all the feedback on our Jelly Bean 4.1 rollout
for Xperia 2012 products – we’re aware the process hasn’t been as succinct or
as timely as you might’ve expected. As part of Developer World’s piece, Fredrik
Ekstrand, our Head of Software Product Management, elaborates on some of the
reasons for this, but essentially – we’ve heard your frustrations and are
constantly improving the way we do things.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

*Software rollouts are a phased process – timings & availability may
    vary by market / carrier

Fredrik Ekstrand, Head of Software Product Management at Sony Mobile.

Fredrik Ekstrand, Head of Software Product Management, and responsible for
the overall planning of software upgrades, explains more:

    – During the Bring up phase, we now
have a much closer collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies than we had at the
time of the ICS release. This makes the Bring up phase much more efficient, as
we can use a lot of the work they do on their reference design for our
integration. This is also something we are constantly working to improve even
    further, says Fredrik.

Another change in how we work is that we now get some pre-release
information from Google through the Platform Development Kit (PDK). The PDK is
distributed to selected device manufacturers and chipset vendors a few weeks
before the public release of a new Android version.

    – Since the ICS days, we have improved our cooperation with Google. Even
though we haven’t seen the new Android 4.3 source code until it’s publicly
released, we now get some information from Google about what areas will be
updated before the public push through the PDK. The PDK was introduced by
Google to help us and other manufacturers speed up the upgrade process. This
means that we can plan our software upgrade projects more in advance, as we
know roughly what parts of the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) we need to
    update, says Fredrik.

The PDK is a collection of source files and
software binaries that enable device manufacturers and chipset vendors to port
their drivers, develop, optimise and test against a new Android release before
it is publicly released. The Android PDK includes a set of interfaces for the
Android hardware abstraction layer (HAL), platform sources for integration, and
a binary system image. The PDK also includes HAL and integration documentation
    and the Android

So to say that if Sony wants Sony Could.

Via gsmareana: “…it(KitKat) will scale automatically to fit on the devices with as little as 512 MB of RAM”. If this is true, let us hope Sony will update 2012 xperias to 4.4.

Going from Sony’s track record, I believe the 2013 line will get 4.3 sometime from early 2014 . I wouldn’t bet any money on any of the 2013 line up, Z1 and ultra included, getting 4.4.
Kitkat will be a 2014 venture for Sony. Heck I don’t even think their flagship of 2014 will even launch with 4.4.
I’ve seen nothing from Sony so far that suggests they’re about to improve and speed up their software development cycle.
The consolation for Sony users is that since jb, android became mature. Software upgrades are not as significant as they were say going from 2.1 to 2.2 or 2.3.
To be honest, I can barely notice any difference in the base android OS between 4.1 and 4.2. The differences come from what the manufactures add to it.
I know we all want the latest on our phones but it really doesn’t matter that much if you’ve got a good jb rom on your phone.
It’s the same for processing specs. For me, the least interesting thing about the Z1 is its 800 cpu. I use an s4 pro device namely the Z and it’s plenty fast for me. I don’t play graphics intensive games so don’t care about more processing power and I believe it’s the same for most users. I work in an office of over 20 people with over half of them owning android devices. I’m the only one who’s even heard of the word snapdragon never mind anything else. It’s the same for most of my friends.
The simple reality is those of us who take a keen interest in these things are in a very small minority.
That’s why Samsung and Apple sell so many phones. Samsung develops a lot of gimmicky marketing software that ordinary people can identify with easily. Forget about whether these features are useful or not, they perform the function they were designed to do which is capture the imagination of Joe public.
Apple created a designer label which people buy to feel trendy and with the in crowd.
HTC is learning painfully that speaking to the enthusiast minority won’t get you very far. That company is dying. Techblog crap or not.
The Xperia Z captured the imagination of millions because of its design and the novelty of waterproofing.
Nokia created the most advanced and innovative smartphone in the lumia 1020 but shot themselves in the foot by sticking with Microsoft. They’ve proved that a smartphone can have a great camera and we should all be thankful to them for that because it’ll push other manufacturers to strive harder.
I’m sorry to burst the bubble of Sony fans but Sony failed with the Z1. The camera on that phone is just the same old stuff we’ve been getting on phones. Slightly better but that’s it. Much work still needed by Sony there I’m afraid. The 1020 shits on the Z1 in imagery. No contest at all.
I know a lot of this is off topic but hey sometimes once you start, you struggle to stop lol!

  • Babylonbwoy

Yes sorry, english not my native language, u can correct me if I’m wrong but say it cool.

  • sony

    4.3 or 4.4 for xperia p?

  • ShinOrochiX

Hopefully a new mid range, cheap Xperia handset running 4.4 will be announced. I’m planning to buy a new phone good thing I haven’t bought one yet ;-)

  • ShinOrochiX

Why do Qualcomm have to be such a$$ holes?

  • ShinOrochiX

Maybe it’s Qualcomm’s behavior why manufacturers don’t update some older phones? I understand that the 2011 devices are old but the 2012 devices are only a year (+ few months) old. Sony need to beat Qualcomm with a stick-that should sort them out. :@

    PS. I don’t even own a 2012 Xperia-still with my WT19i :-D

    we get just one android update till now ! ( 4.0.4 –> 4.1.2 )

  • CG441

    devices that should get the new update Z1, Z, ZL, SP, C, M, V, T, L

  • Rogue

You are the one who needs to educate yourself and I’m not an advocate of Sony fact is that qualcomm dropped support for many of it’s chips and the Oem had to pull out of updating their phones. As for 4.3 there is no big changes from 4.2 not to mention 4.3 on most phones is buggy. As for 4.4 the average consumer will want the update but for a guy like me who likes to tinker and mod google is introducing some strict measures for ppl like me as they are taking aim at modders just like what Samsung is doing with knox. taking away what makes android fun isn’t cool yet I understand google wants to lock down and tighten security but knowing this is where we are headed doesn’t make me feel over joyed.

Yeah, sadly they’re just forgotten. Well, i don’t care about that anymore, just forget a flagship, its just the same to all high-end devices if the OEM itself doesn’t bother about it, just buy what ever suits you now.

Btw, Nexus phones aren’t special anymore, like what happened to GNexus, Google said that GNexus already got 18 month live-circle support updates, now due to chipset maker stopped producing the chipsets on GNexus and needed to invest money to rewrite the driver code on it then they stopped supporting it, i believe it’ll happen to SD800 either. Shit happens everywhere!

  • No. It’s too new.

  • spade

    Sad but true..

  • spade

Whatever it is, if that was true they shouldn’t name it SONY on those Xperias on the first place if they’re going to abandon that later, it’ll just make their name go bad

  • spade

I don’t think that Sony wouldn’t update Z1, just time the real prob, but i personally don’t care much about latest version as long as the phone itself is bug free..

What i’m trying to say is that for Xperias 2012 users who want their phone to get the latest version, they need to move on.

    T is the new S.

so, lets see how far sony is willing to go (since it’s got an s4 processor). I’d bet on sony announcing a “quick” 4.3 for T, available somewhere around may 2014, and worldwide release by june 2014.

  • veneo

    Blame both…….and yourself !

  • glein

    Seriously, I hope it does, it’s a very good handset for a dual-core. :D

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

No, T does not have similar hardware to Nexus 4. Where did you get that info?

  • Caio Faria

Open AnTuTu Benchmark and compare results. Because the Xperia T is located behind the Nexus 4?

  • muaddib99k

Wonder is Xperia TX will receive 4.3 or 4.4 update.
Seems like Sony have abandon it since updating it to 4.1

  • Andrie Putra

Sony will said ” we will investigate it right now ” which mean no .. upgrade for phone that have been stuck in ICS 4.0 or Jelly bean 4.1

  • P9

my bad I do mean 2014, bro! thank.

whatever, don’t really care which flavor of S4 it has. just, need to know whether they still care for older phones or not, when deciding my next phone.

because it still is within the S4 family, unlike xperia S which has the S3 family SoC.

if sony gives only one update per phone, then i’d rather not go for it. the least they could do is give at least flagship models some update – like samsung does, apparently S3 – the T competitor is getting 4.3. what’s the point of getting an update close to EOL of a phone ? if they release an update in another 6 months – i’d dump sony and go for a nexus. only reason I did not already order a nexus 5 is I am waiting for an update regarding updates from sony

  • ali moosavi

    Just xperia v & kitkat

  • ali moosavi

    Just xperia v & kitkat

  • ali moosavi

    is kitkat for xperia v?

  • odonk

I doubt that sony will include U and Sola in this 4.4 update, despite 512mb ram can run 4.4 smoothly

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

    >.> That’s no way to determine similar hardware. The chipset is different.

” Xperia SP will get it. ”

    SONY make.believe

To date, no update for Xperia Phones SP did not ask you to have a quick update to Android 4.4, the phone can offer, do not forget your lovers eyes are now on your phone and then hand all companies are seeking to destroy the Sony name.

Xperia mini handsets with the necessary hardware power up after upgrade from Android 4.0.4 to higher version

  • hotdog

If sony will upgrade even the budget phones, sony’s sale will increase because people will by even the lower specs sony phones.

  • APai

100% true. when I picked T, they said “4.1 coming absolutely tremendously soon” , that translated into 4 months. then the whole Z series came and with it amnesia. “2012 ? what 2012 phones ?” is sony’s attitude.

  • APai

    don’t hold your breath :)

  • APai

technically, kitkat was meant for all of them. but it’s upto sony to remember phones from the previous year. it seems to be following a pattern. the moment they are into a new year – they forget they made phones the previous year! they are like kids – always playing around with the newest things around and move onto the next shiny thing!

  • 3rdflyleaf

With that strategy, they can say it already has 2 major updates. Like they did on Xperia S. They release it with Gingerbread while everyone announced their flagships with ICS. Then Sony Update it with ICS and then JB. Now, they can say It’s 2 major updates.

  • tx

    tx please

  • Pandemic

Shut up you and dont post nothing you noob

  • vineeth

I just hope my xperia SL gets an update to 4.3 atleast. It’ll be sad if SL or S does’nt receive an update as both of them are pretty good phones.

  • ?butthurt?

Come on genius, are you can’t figure out yet? Don’t be dumb!

  • APai

it’s twisted, but yeah, I guess that’s their easy way to weasel out of commitments. what I’m not okay with is – at least have some model that is a worthy flagship – give it regular updates. are we to go only for nexus phones to have it all ? like samsung is stuffing its phones with unwanted obstructions. sony did good by being mod friendly, but they are a bit late with software. I just want to know if they are going to fix their software cycles or if they are going to be mod friendly but otoh slow with their software, I’m not too happy with the choppy UI – they could have fixed it by now. i did not admit it or i was okay with it, until I installed nova – which flies on the same hardware. sad.

  • kolodaostap

It is not so old and so weak in terms of performance and hardware..
At least please make some 4.2-4.3 upgrade….

  • Guest

    One other person is typing…

  • 3rdflyleaf

I meant 3 major updates for XperiaS, from GB>ICS>JB.
Yeah, They should treat flagships a flagship. I mean Why release app updates only for newer flagship models when obviously the old flagship can handle that update? sigh*

  • Nikolai ivanov

    What day??

  • Naveen Piedy

Its a week now, where is the official word ???

  • Olli Optional

    First up, Jelly Bean 4.3

We’re pleased to tell you that we’ll start rolling Android 4.3 for Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 from next month*.

    And, to Kit Kat 4.4

We’re also happy to tell you about the first raft of Xperia products that we’ll make Android 4.4 Kit Kat available for – they are: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1*.

*Software rollouts are a phased process – timings & availability may vary by market / carrier

  • Good Lord! I though that i7 will be introduced on the new X8. They had to modify the i7, because it is too big for mobile phones so it now has 20 small cores, clocked at 2GHz each!

  • ahmad

Please release 4.4 for xperia t
