Xperia E1 in the wild pictures

in Hands On, Xperia E1

Xperia E1 Live_11Press renders are all very well and good, but it’s always nice to see how a phone looks in real life. We were eager to see how the brilliantly designed entry-level Xperia E1 looks in the flesh and came across the pictures below. It is so refreshing to see Sony’s premium design cues filter down its range. We may not get a new design language in 2014 from Sony, but judging by the pics below, we have no problem with that.

  • ????????? ???????

    design is good, but hardware is shit!

  • Filipp

    I would like to see chinese devices with better hardware and lower price in this design. It looks quite attractive.

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

    An entry level phone at its best design <3

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

    price will be as shit as that

  • doucheytuesdayhellyeh

    Good…apart from the bezel (how many times, Sony?!)

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

    way better than iPhone

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

    price will be as sh*t as that

  • Feanor

    Give us a break with the bezel talk. Everyone has come to think that bezel size is the defining criteria for mobile phone design. Considering the budget nature of e E1 the bezels are not even big. Please!

  • Feanor

    One comment: the E1 and T2 Ultra are running, according to Sony website, Android 4.3 at launch. This seems to be confirmed by some pictures that show a black background for the notification and menu buttons bars. But the press images show transparent backgrounds. Does Sony preview there Android 4.4?

  • SomeBody

    Really awesome phone considering it will compete in the ‘useless-garbage’ category, but why music oriented? The speaker (holes) looks really nice, but what about audio output? What kind of amp/DAC does it pack? Still waiting for a Walkman ZX1 with phone functionality :)

  • SomeBody

    You do realize that it’s a small phone, right? The bezels look the way they look, because there’s no 6″ screen next to them that would make them look tiny. Ants tend to look giant with high magnification. Ants + salt + high magnification = giant monsters in a crystal cave… omg so terrifying

  • Asad Ahmed

    what do you want in 129 euros???
    you are seriously pathetic

  • Tobias Johnson

    Such a BEAUTY <3

    But can this budget Android effort by Sony match the current undoubted market leader for entry-level Android smartphones – the Motorola ‘Moto G’? I doubt it. Every review of that phone I have read concludes it is by far the best budget smartphone on the market and equal to phones at twice the price.
    Specifications and Review (link):
    * 8GB for £135 or 16GB for £160)
    * 1GB Ram
    * 4.5-inch, 720p, LCD display
    * 1.2GHz quad core processor
    * 2070 mAh battery and an energy-efficient Cortex A7-based CPU
    * 5MP camera + LED flash, with 1.3MP front-facing camera
    * WiFi b/g/n
    * Bluetooth 4.0
    * USB 2.0
    * Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with a
    4.4 KitKat update promised for January 2014

    The Moto G is not a direct competitor. I expect at least a €50 difference between the E1 and the Moto G which is undoubtedly small, but considerable in this price segment. Also always careful when comparing official prices and prices on the market e.g. from Amazon. You get a strong discount from such retailers, so you cannot directly compare official prices to Amazon prices. I think the Moto G is more of a competitor to the Xperia M or even the L. And after all the E1 has some USPs, like the speaker and the Walkman button.

  • Gareth McStravick

    if you actually look the iphones bezels are actually thicker!! For a bargain phone this phone you cant go wrong, plus 4.4 is perfect for 512MB RAM!

  • boosook

    ti Unfortunately it will have android 4.3, and since sony does not update its entry level phones it will never get 4.4. A 512MB phone with android 4.3 will be too slow as soon as you install some additional apps.

  • Tjaldid

    I’m hoping that there will be an Xperia F that is closer to the Moto G in specs (which is 169 EUR)

  • Tjaldid

    If Sony makes a Xperia SP2 (S2 rather?) then it will surely rival it

  • surethom

    When will companies learn, the place for speakers are on the front, or at least the bottom or top, but Never on the back.

  • Mohammed

    Moto G (8GB) same price, much better specs. Design ok, hardware great! Not pathetic but true.

  • Pig Meat

    BTW UK Kit-Kat for Moto G roll out has already started, wayy ahead of Sony.

  • xyge

    Nope, you probably havent used any sony 4.3 device…they all have transparent backgrounds in “sony” apps(home, walkaman, album and all)

  • Raj Singh

    Agreed. I like the speakers’ placement on the BB Playbook and the HTC One… and there should definitely be two speakers for stereo playback.

  • Feanor

    But the press pictures show transparent bars specifically on home screen which is different from the live pics of E1 (with 4.3 obviously) and the press pics of the Z1 Compact which also runs 4.3. Check them out.
    I believe that Sony are previewing the 4.4 update which might be coming reasonably soon.

  • Micro

    hmm… every xperia I have right now (E, S and Z1) have and had as long as I remember (almost) the transparent status bar, and Z1 have transparent buttons bar. Yes, on the desktop too. So this includes 4.2.2 and 4.3.
    How transparent those bars have to be to don’t let some guys think it is 4.4..?
    or.. perhaps.. I am missing something? (/me confused)

  • Feanor

    Your S runs 4.2.2? How?
    No, no. It’s different; the 4.2.2 built includes translucent bars, the press images of the E1 and T2 Ultra haw completely transparent bars, just like the Nexus 5.

  • Micro

    no, S is at 4.1, Z1 had 4.2.2 when I got it out of the box (sorry, my bad, didn’t say it clearly).
    And you are probably talking about those press pics, they are not actually a photos, those are rendered images only. Just like the Smart Watch 2 had this music widget on rendered pics, real one doesn’t have it.

    My point is that we can look for some hidden things on the pics, sure thing, I just think this theory about 4.4 simply went a little bit too far (IMO of course, unless I’m still missing something).

  • xyge

    could you show a comaprison pic?..i mean just to make it a little clear…..

    i’d love it if ur prediction is true :D ..but 4.4 update seems quite impossible given the fact that 4.3 is rolling out now and 4.4 has some major changes, so will require quite a lot of time to work on.

  • InspectorGadget80

    wish sony could of add BIG SPEAKERS FOR THE Z1 AND Z. lovely lil hand set

  • ooaa

    DEsign even better than samsung flagship phones

  • 3rdflyleaf

    I noticed it too. The transparency of the press images is the same as those you find in a nexus device. The transparency has a fade effect (home screen).

  • walkmen

    why theres no camera flash on the back ?????

  • walkmen

    why theres no camera flash on the back ?????

  • TakuyaZ

    The fade effect is just a wallpaper. And lol its a render. It won’t look exactly like the final,product

    I love the Walkman W style. Brilliant signature design by Sony designers. I have one on my lovely Sony Ericsson W995. Awesome music phone. Still active remain love forever.
