Sony Japan unveils the Xperia A2 for NTT DoCoMo

Xperia A2_Press_9Sony Japan has announced the Xperia A2 (SO-04F) this morning for NTT DoCoMo. The handset which we previously dubbed the ‘Xperia Z1 Compact refresh‘ or ‘Xperia Z2 Compact‘ is nothing of the sort. The Xperia A2 looks almost identical to the Xperia Z1 Compact, but comes in new colours such as Lavender and Orange, as well as Grey Black and White.

The Xperia A2 shares many of the same specifications as the Xperia Z1 Compact (or Xperia Z1 f as it is known in Japan), so we suspect Sony has launched the handset as a much cheaper option to the Xperia Z2 (SO-03F) that was also announced this morning for DoCoMo.

The Xperia A2 comes with a matte plastic back as opposed to the glass back in the Xperia Z1 f. The handset will come equipped with a 4.3-inch 720p display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8974 chipset with 2.2GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 330 graphics.

It will also feature 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD memory card support, IP55/IP58 certification for dust and water resistance, a 20.7MP Exmor RS camera, a 2.2MP Exmor R front camera and a 2300mAh battery.

The Xperia A2 has dimensions of 65 × 128 × 9.7 mm and weighing 138g, placing it almost identically to the Xperia Z1 Compact. Pre-orders for the Xperia A2 open today, with the phone expected to launch in the middle of June 2014.

The more i look the more i love orange color.strange i usually get black phones mostly

  • ahomad hosin

    the golden looks quite….. different

  • Okenok

I don’t understand, except the plastic instead of glass back what are the differences with the Z1 compact? Cause I don’t see.

I hope that this is not the Z2 Compact, nothing new

  • Jan

Orange like it calls Sony, is very nice. Also bezel around phone is nicely shaped. I think im getting Z2 in month or two, but it doesnt have orange option ;)

  • Sekai

Planning to get Z1C but if this comes out of the box without flash bleed, I’m getting this instead. I hope we get international release…….

  • DeLorean75

If it at least has better scratch resistance than Z1C, on both sides.

  • Colby Leong

Have you tried removing the shatterproof protectors because the glass underneath have is scratch resistant. Still a fingerprint agent though.

  • Colby Leong

Japan release first, then international a week to a month later. If you live in great US then you can get it as soon a dealer does.

  • scw

Not all japanese model was released in the past. Also for some reason they never try orange out side japan.

  • DeLorean75

No, I haven’t. The Sony logo will come off then?

  • scw

They used the “A” model number indicating it is always intended as a second-tier model. Although the marketing guys may still mess around.

  • jag

Woah! That gray black looks good. ^^

  • Colby Leong

Unfortunately on my Z1 it does, leaving the whole top bezel empty. It’s looks good when the screen is off, but when it’s on it sort of emphasizes the huge bezels. Also removing it voids the warranty for Sony. There’s good and bad to it, I do know a few who did remove it applied their own Oleophobic(prolly spelt wrong) coating.

  • Sekai

I sure hope that’s the case bec Xperia A, the predecessor, was only released to JP…

  • Colby Leong

Japan always gets the better stuff and that’s complete bull.

  • DeLorean75

The Z1C isn’t mine. I’ve still got my ZR. I’ll stay put for the 2nd gen Compact.

  • Toh Ler Kang

What is the point to launch this device then…it is just like slapping face with own hand. In my point of view, Sony suppose to release the lavender and orange version of xperia z1 compact to increase the sales as well.

  • Colby Leong

Well if the Z2 Compact follows it’s big brother then it might not come with a protector on it

I like the way that Sony makes phones with more than 2 colours! That means more sales!

  • ryq24

    4.3″ screen! Nowadays a mini’s screen should be between 4.5″ to 4.7″ .

  • Okenok

I wonder when we’ll have news about the Z2 compact, I wonder if it worth to wait for it or get a Z1C

  • bah

he means NO and fuck you

  • cs098

Huh what is the difference between the z1f (z1 compact for japan) and the a2?

Why plastic? It’s because Xperia A/ZR has a plastic hood. Expect for Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact this Winter-Spring 2014-2015 in Japan(NTT DOCOMO and AU) there is No Z2 compact because of Z1c has Snapdragon 800 2.2ghz already. The Next chipset will be Snapdragon will be 802-03 with 2.5-2.7 Ghz

  • Vitruvian Man

I’m bummed. Why can’t Sony just make it with an all glass back? I would pay the extra for glass. No matter how careful I was with my Z1C, I got hairline scratches all over it.

Why is so freakin’ difficult to get a high spec mobile with a premium build that isn’t a 5+ in. display?

I currently live in Japan and they do have a lot of other
smartphones we don’t get. Such as Fujitsu Arrows series, Sharp Aquos, NEC
Medias W (Dual Screen Smartphone), Panasonic Eluga, etc. However, they use their
phones a lot; just ride a train or walk any street in Japan and you will see
how much they use there smartphones. Plus they commute a lot using public transportation
so you see them playing games, texting, or watching videos. That is also why
most of their models also have a TV tuner. They even still make flip phones; some
high-end like the DoCoMo Fijitsu Exmor which meets IPX5/IPX8 standards. They
also have smartphones dedicated and made just for woman. But getting to the
point it is fitting that Japan gets Sony Xperia Smartphones and the different
variants first as Sony is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation. Of
course you would take care of your home market first. However there is a
caveat; a lot of Japanese use the iPhone ironically enough.

NO WAY!!!!! Unless they keep the 4.3″ as well

  • Disagree but agree. There’s no need for a 4.7″ screen in a mini. Yet, the Moto X is the same size, yet has a 4.7″ screen, so Sony should work on making its bezels smaller.

If the A2 is meant to be the Z2 Compact, then it’s no different from the Z1 Compact -same screen size, RAM, storage, cameras, battery size, processor. Now if they make the Z2 Compact a 4.7″ screen (bigger than the Z1 Compact, like the Z2 is over the Z1), gave it 3GB RAM, Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz chip (as in the Z2), then it would be both an improvement over the Z1 Compact and a scaled down version -in dimensions terms- of the Z2, but the A2 is virtually identical to the Z1 Compact.
