Sony to beta test Android 5.0 Lollipop release in Sweden

by XB on 5th November 2014

in Android, Xperia Z3 series

3beta Xperia Lollipop_ThumbSony has partnered with Three Sweden to offer select customers the chance to be the first in the world to test its upcoming Android 5.0 Lollipop software. Sony plans to upgrade all Xperia Z devices to Android Lollipop in early 2015, starting with the Xperia Z3 and Z2 series.

The “3beta” collaboration will allow a limited number of Three Sweden customers to run a Lollipop-enabled Xperia Z3 or Xperia Z3 Compact as their daily driver, reporting their findings back to Sony through a dedicated app. You will be required to report any problems you encounter and flag areas of improvement.

If you want to give this a try, head to this site and fill in the form. You will also need to be able to get to Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö to meet with Sony and Three Sweden representatives. The deadline for applications is 16 November 2014. Good luck!

    Can’t wait for 2015 to get Lollipop on my Z1…!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

  • Felix

So they actually learned something from previous buggy updates? Why is their own testing team so utter crap then?

  • Luís Alberto Pérez

Sometimes when you analyse a problem only in one perspective don’t get to see the all picture… I think it’s very good to ask regular people to test the product not in the programmer view. This way Sony will be able to improve user experience in different views.

  • Felix

Yeah I was kind of trolling there probably. Actually, now that I think of its, they did it before:

  • mustafa

Now we just gotta wait for the leaks :DD

  • Clarence Alvarado

Material-Designed Walkman, Album and Movies app FTW! :D

  • Abdul Ghani

sony now needs to add sd card support since android 5.0 fully supports it

  • Tim Westerholm

I hope I’m one of the lucky ones in this contest! :-D btw, we’re not allowed to revel the news if we win. We have to keep it for ourselves until the official release 2015

  • Xciter

Nailed it! A user’s experience is very important. Nice to see Sony already making progress with their updates

  • bao trung giang

This beta is for the z3 series only or entire z series?

  • ash

I think it would come to other countries or directly to customers as well. I don’t know why but I feel it.

  • ash

    Only for z3

  • Asa

No, Sony’s media apps look fantastic. Those are the only things the should not change. Material design isn’t that great anyway, stock has never been a looker.

  • Uh, can I video call into Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö from Joburg, South Africa? I can, uh, um, test the OS in really warm temperatures!

I doubt it. nVidia is releasing 5.0 this month and Sony is going to start beta testing next year!? Unacceptable! I payed a lot of money for the Z1 and this is what I get! If they are going to continue like this when I buy a new phone I’ll make sure it isn’t an Xperia!

  • roeshak

You and you’re fix the camera software crusade! Do you spend all your time using superior auto or something? If so, you’ll be waiting a long time mate. Superior auto has a long way to go before it can rival other auto modes on other phones. It ain’t gonna happen with android L. Sony has barely improved its performance since the original Z dropped last year.
I’m just happy for now that focusing is much improved with 4.4.4. Full res photos are much sharper now. I’m a manual mode guy and wouldn’t touch any phone that didn’t have one side from the iPhone that is. It’s the only phone with a truly competent auto mode.

  • Abdul Ghani

actually i dont use mobile camera anymore i use qx10 even in darkness i can take a perfect picture with i hate sony software even in manual mode reducing iso and exposure i have to be a statue to get non blurry image sony software mobile sux big time accept the fact

  • Alex Baloch

I honestly think Sony will make Android Lollipop look the best on its devices. Look at kitkat, it’s so much hotter than the other companys kitkat versions! And plus, since Android Lollipop is coming for the whole Xperia Z series, this is probably gonna be the best update ever.

  • Alex Baloch

Can’t wait for lollipop on my Xperia Z!

  • roeshak

Have you tested the cameras performance on 4.4.4. A lot more consistent. Blurry photos may not be a thing of the past but their frequency has been greatly reduced.
Stop telling people to wake up just because they don’t agree with you.
Apart from gsmarenna and phonearenna, don’t think you’ll find many other techblogs who are critical of the z2s camera. Most say it’s the best on the android side and it just got better with the recent update. Wake up man lol!

  • Ediz I

Just for your information they are testing now not next year, as they promised they will release the lollipop update next year 1Q and beta test they doing now to optimize.

  • Sean

Your Z1 is still able to do what it could, when you bought it, isn’t it? So where’s the problem? Lolipoop isn’t such a big deal anyway.

  • Jack

My bad read the article wrong. Still Sony are to slow and have disappointed me so far. They take their time and what they deliver is a buggy mess with an outdated UI! Z1 will probably have to wait until early Q2. If their 5.0 is the same as their previous big updates I don’t care if Sony sells of the Xperia division! I don’t want the rest of Sony to have to suffer because Xperia is consistently incompetent!

  • Jack

It still isn’t what I wanted it to be! Lolipoop isn’t such a big deal!? From what I’ve seen and used on the Nexus 5 it is a big deal in a lot of ways! UI, performance, features etc! It’s what Android should have been from the start and it is only going to get better!

  • mustafa

    Bring this to the UK!!!!!

  • Alter

Sell Mobile Division -> Acquisite Capcom -> Monster Hunter Exclusive for Playstation forever :D
I don’t care if i own old phone, gaming is on top of my priority list.

  • Shebo313

That’s what I see as some sort of problem. Sony’s design language is based on futurism with very minimal skeuomorphism. If Material Design and Sony UI collide, it will just look horrible. No homogeneity. I can’t actually imagine Sony’s approach to the guidelines because both design languages are very different. So I guess we’ll just have to wait.

  • Abdul Ghani

after looking qx10 quality z1z2z3 pictures are shit so i dont care

  • Abdul Ghani

plus no mobile can defeat qx10 in terms of picture quality

  • Quark Gluon

If Sony have enough will power, it could come up with its own style of material design. But that also means lots of apps redesign.

  • Jack

Exactly! They could focus on their division that actually are worth something and invest in them to make them even better! Imagine if they bought Atlus and Capcom! If they had the money to invest in OLED they would have been ahead of Samsung! Their TVs have really improved and having Android TV on them at a competitive price point and solid marketing could help them a lot imo. Their camera division could easily steal away more market share from the competition! Instead they’ve thrown a lot of money a mobile and have achieved nothing! Sure their hardware has improved a lot this last year but their software is stuck on Android 2.3 visually, they are slow to update and full of bugs and the performance of things like camera, wifi etc is a few years behind the competition!

  • Jack

Please NO! That would mean having Sony’s apps etc look one way and most of my other apps look like what Google’s guidelines describe…

  • Jack

Futurism with very minimal skeuomorphism!? What futurism! Sure their design isn’t very heavy on skeuomorphism but… Their apps icons look like smarties or like the real thing (phone look like and old phone, in setting: home like a home etc), silver sliders etc! It’s not a coincidence MS, Google etc are moving away from skeuomorphism. They are making UI for an OS and apps not a video game! Icons don’t need to look 3d and like the real thing!

  • Quark Gluon

It could be, either in a good way or in a bad way. But I hate to imagine that all the apps will look and feel the same, as if they were all made by Google.

  • roeshak

And what size sensor and lens does the qx10 use? There’s just something wrong with your line of thinking!

  • Jack

Other non Google apps have updated to material design and imo still are distinctive and have their own brand. For example I don’t want have apps look like Android 2.3, others like something else etc and to make matters worse have to learn how to navigate etc each little app. Inconsistency is confusing and also breaks the experience! Imagine if you were watching a TV series and one episode was a drama in NY, the next was comedy in Egypt, next a horror in Dubai etc all why trying to be part of a bigger story

  • Coolkid

Yeah… That’s the best part there.. Sony stunned everybody by giving L update to original Z.. And that awesome device deserves such treatment by the way…!! Cheers…!!! :) :) :)

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Well, why did you buy the Z1 then??Buying things at the moment is always because of what the object in question has done to impress you in the five minutes of looking at it,not what it can do in the next 1 year of owning it.I bought my Z at full price despite news of the Z1 coming in fast..But I didn’t regret because I bought it as a phone that it’s other intelligent capabilities is considered a plus point.not something i would always need, just something I would like to have for certain occasions.

Please..Tell me what is wrong in this image?

  • Abdul Ghani

normally its fine when zooming immediate loss of details looks blurred

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Please, tell me what is wrong in these images?

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Sorry I don’t usually zoom in..and sorry for double posting

  • Abdul Ghani

    so kinda waste picture then

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Nope..I capture the big picture..any small bits is still kept in the best place, our brain..I just use this pics to associate any event, from then,I am easily piece together the events..

  • Abdul Ghani

dosent matter sensor size its the qx10 software which is kick ass sony mobile software way out of the league against here is one sample i used qx10 its superior auto for my cat in dark area both are screen shots get that kind of image in dark area with xperia i mean any xperia that details and light without flash

  • Abdul Ghani

still waste sony mobile software sux big time

  • roeshak

Doesn’t matter the sensor size? Okay! I think I’ll just leave you to it lol!

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Not in reality against a G2 or note 2/3 or s4

  • Abdul Ghani

get that result with xperia then will care because z1 and qx10 same sensor size i still dont believe u guys support poor software i can show 100s low light proof with qx10 how awesome can it be but i can bet even with flash u cant get that result that kick ass result

  • Abdul Ghani

that is why i have qx10 to capture the best in pictures and less in brain lol

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Yeah..I have the qx10 too..and I put it to a better use than you do for taking pictures at a distance and low light shots.I mean, for night shots, wouldn’t the qx100 make a better statement? If I need to take the small bits it’s our with the qx10 if not,it’s just point and shoot..

  • Abdul Ghani

lol qx10 u can get really awesome results in low and it was design to do point and shoot :P

  • Abdul Ghani

BTW maybe this is why sony mobile will never fix the camera software you and your kind of noobs who believe what sony mobile says about their camera and cant face the fact that their mobile camera software sux and sony will nver fix until ur kind ( blind believers) of guys admit

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Design as a point and shoot…without a viewfinder??? Funny….As a camera that takes DSLR challenging pics I agree.. But not an instant point and shoot..
I know of the low light performance, used it before plenty of times..but doesn’t come close to the qx100.. That is what you should get if you want to talk about image quality in the dark and when zoomed in.

  • vigneshprince

    great!

  • Abdul Ghani

i will just leave u to it there i can and conform i get awesome shots no need expensive camera for that plus in future i will buy qx30 and i still use qx10 as point and shoot cant understand how cant u lol

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Just saying the connection times takes the fun out of the best moments at times

  • Peter

I would actually prefer those apps to stay as they are – I really like the current design.

  • Peter

nVidia is only releasing it for 1 product – and it’s for the latest product. Xperia Z1 is not the only one that Sony made, and it is not the latest.

I know Sony is a bit slow – but please don’t compare those two because it’s a bit unfair.

  • Peter

Yes, I’m sure “Monster Hunter” is a more viable and important business for Sony than mobile devices like smartphones and tablets…

No offense, but grow up man – the world doesn’t revolve around video games – and huge corporations like Sony don’t do it as well.

  • Mars

Is it just my impression or do you live on the Crysis 1 island ? :) . If I am right please post some pics of the aliens.

  • Choaib Kanouni

I want blur with material design when select everywhere, do it Sony!!

I needed a phone and was hopping the reviews were over exaggerating! I liked the hardware build and was hopping Sony had finally stepped up their game in mobile! Where I live I can’t go into a store a test it out, I ordered it online!

  • Haldi

Looking forward to see the FTF on XDA :)

  • malav patel

i still dont have 4.4.4 on the original z here in canada and my battery is flowing like water

  • Ninjas

Yes. The QX10 is kick ass in low light condition. Try capture the city during night from top of building. Amazing..

Say what you want but Sony isn’t making money from mobile, they are losing money! On the other hand they are making a lot of money from their Playstation division! Grow up!? Have you been living under a rock, thinking video games are for little kids!? Educate yourself on reality!

  • Quark Gluon

QX10 has Optical SteadyShot. It means you can shoot in lower ISO and lower shutter speed without the blur.

  • pjlk

I dont know, theres something wrong with Sony UI, esp Messaging and Dialer/Contacts. They dont blend well compared to Walkman app(which i really love). Needs changing are icons and some system elements (boot screen, horrible), and sounds (personal taste).
