Sony’s Xperia Z3 wireless charging kit demoed

in Accessories, Videos, Xperia Z3 series

Sony WCR14 chargerSony will shortly launch the wireless charging kit for the Xperia Z3 which includes the WCR14 Wireless Charging Cover and WCH10 Wireless Charging Plate. Sony uses the Qi standard for wireless charging, so any charging plate should work. However, Sony is offering both items in one package for around the £60 mark in the UK.

Some places do have stock, for example third-party sellers on Amazon UK. Others have already sold out of their initial stock including MobileFun and Clove. If you want to see the two accessories in action before pushing that buy button then check out the video below.

Thanks Ben!

How is this more convenient than USB charging?

  • Dmitry Perets

IMHO terrible implementation, unfortunately prone to failure. Using the cover only during charging is of course nonsense. So I guess it is supposed to be used as a permanent cover. But… It is so huge, thick and heavy, that this is also nonsense. Just compare it to SCR24 (a cover with window for Z3) – twice as heavy, every dimension js significantly bigger… I see only one charging solution for Z3 that makes sense – charging dock DK48.

  • Justme

IMO it is. When the USB port is on the upper left side of the phone and covered by sealed lid, this is much more convenient. But is this more convenient than DK48 dock? No, i don’t think so. Seems to make your phone pretty thick and probably much heavier, no thanks.

  • onosmajente

It should also available for other Sony phone too expecial Z s

  • Ram Mar

You won’t have to mess with the flap and risking damage to it or the USB port. Too bad the charging pins are set into hard plastic and affixed to the case holder. Would’ve preferred a ribbon/flex cable charger (w/ tiny, thin magnet to hold it in place) that could be slid/tucked away and allow for magnetic charger use – with a cutout in the cover.

No auto screen off with the closed cover, Sony? C’mon….

  • payaxy

Ridiculous, no one in their right mind would put this ugly monstrosity on nice phone like Z3. Is this Sony’s way of acknowledging they should’ve put QI charging into Z3 in the first place?

As mentioned below, charging dock would be much better solution, or if too expensive, you can buy microUSB-> magnetic connector converter online for about $2.

  • RealityCheck2014

    Wouldn’t mind one for my Z1 :P

  • gmfady

    vnice comprehensive kit ?

  • Danny

Sony should also make a Qi wireless charging cover for their Z series. I have a Z, Z1, Z1 compact and Z ultra. It would be great if Sony can make an official wireless charging case for each since there is now an Official Sony charging plate.

I mean of all the phones, Sony actually have contact points that you can make a case really utilize it, making it very easy. why can’t they do it?

  • grav1ty

very disappointig, in my opinion. Wireless charging should be possible without a cover making the beautiness of z3 senseless. I dont a buy a smartphone with aluminium frame and glass back to put it in a plastic cover that makes my smartphone just thicker and ugly..

  • ShaunTheSheep

    > Sony should also make a Qi wireless charging cover for their Z series.
Uh..it says “Sony uses the Qi standard for wireless charging” right there?!

  • ShaunTheSheep

You don’t break the USB socket when you’ve plugged it in for the 500th time. (That’s why i’m using the magnetic port instead. A couple of quid off ebay saves all this arsing around with covers and pads and the expense of it all)

  • Jake Lew

    Magnetic dock did that better.

  • Wolf0491

They don’t have compatible cases though. You have to used a case the wireless charging isn’t built into phone

  • Ali Alkhazal

hopefully it will not get cancelled just like the Z2 cover for the sake of Z3 users. Still love my z2 though :)

  • webusermy

So you are suggesting that Sony, for the sake of 5% of their Z series buyers, to make the phone bigger and heavier than it needs to be for the other 95% of their Z series buyers?

Have they (the industry) improved the slow charging rates of these wireless chargers anyway?

  • Guest

Here’s hoping wireless charging will be standard across the Z4.

  • JG

Hmmm… what good is a charging dock for sony then? You just have to put the phone on top of the dock then viola!!! Wireless charging!!!! No need t buy the cover and the plate!

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Make it built in sony.. :-)

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Agreed, besides, all this magnetic charging has a lot of wasted energy to heat..

Brand new firmware for xperia z1s.

  • AsadMulla

just bought this today… working properly.. but the cover design can be better…

  • Raj Singh

Should be built into the phone…

  • jonyah

But can’t do data and voice simultaneously and comes with V’s logos and high prices. :(

  • jonyah

    To be discontinued in 3….2…1…

  • can you set the case in display position an still have it charge? Like if you were to use it as an alarm clock.

  • jonyah

I really love the magnetic connectors. I’ve had some issues with one of my docks so I’ve fallen back on the magnetix.

  • Jeff Mathews

I am waiting to see the wireless charging kit for Xperia Z3. I have never done wireless charging on my phone. Hope it would be a good experience with the product. To know more about the Xperia Z3 visit http://bit.ly/11dtLTl

The Qi charging plate would need to be directly beneath the receiver coils (located behind the plastic holder for the phone). You’d have to prop the charging plate at the desired angle and drape the WCR14 case over it.

  • wumps13

What is ridiculous is that they need 2 months after launch to bring a cover to the z3 series. Is there anybody intelligent left at Sony?

  • blubaju

Sorry, the flimsy covers making the Z3 waterproof will not last long if opened daily maybe twice at least, one over night and a second time in the car, navigation running. Next a thin protection like tech21 helps a lot as the rim of the z3 is to thin for a reals man fingers, I can hardly hold the z3 without activating somthing I do not want to start. A smartphone at this price must have QI built-in, better avoid the useless glas-back, heavy and reflecting into the camera when frontal or side light.

  • webuser.my

I don’t know about you, but my Xperia Z was being charged twice daily via USB cable for over a year and it still closes tightly. Not to mention the many times I would be playing with it, opening and closing it when I’m fugitive.

For my Z2, I had it since day 1 and it’s going strong. It’s charged daily at night via USB as well and it’s still fine.

As for charging in the car, I am using the magnetic charger that’s hooked up to my windscreen mount.

Have they even fixed the slow charging rates of the wireless chargers? Cause I know my friends with Qi built-in complains that it drains when “charging” as the discharge is way higher than the charging rate.. not to mention when you’re using navigation in the car with the screen always on, blue tooth, audio playing and GPS running…

  • superseiyan

@stevenkhooskkl:disqus @webusermy:disqus – Unlike the charging plate, can the magnetic dock charge without a cover and without having to open the plug covers? (http://www.sonymobile.com/us/products/accessories/magnetic-charging-dock-dk48/)
