Sony has no plans to launch 2K display smartphones in near future

10_Xperia_Z3_PlusSmartphones with Quad HD (QHD) resolution displays are starting to become more prevalent on flagship devices, but don’t expect such a feature from Sony any time soon. Jonathan Lin, general manager of Sony Mobile’s Taiwan branch, recently said that despite many internal discussions regarding a move to a resolution of 2K (1440 x 2560 pixels), convincing the consumers of the ‘upgrade’ remains difficult.

At the moment, making the move to 2K technology on 5- to 5.5-inch screens does not seem able to achieve market segmentation, so we have no plans to launch 2K phones,” said Lin. He went on to say that the move to QHD will need to wait until Sony Mobile can make “significant improvements in display quality and digital image processing technology.”

The big concerns around QHD smartphones is battery life and whether users would even be able to tell the difference between FHD and QHD resolution on a 5-inch screen. Would you like to see a 2K screen on a future Sony Xperia smartphone? If so we’d love to hear your reasons why below.

Via Focus Taiwan.

  • MeshalaMosa

    no i prrfer Fullhd

  • Timel

    Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    This is very good news

2K display is fucking useless, fucking nonsense

Full HD is enough for smartphone and tablet

    Whatever OLED Display please!!!!

  • mustafa

My next smartphone will probably have a 2k screen. I hope Sony do make a 2k smartphone. I personally can see the pixels on a FHD screen, but I think 2k is as high as it should go on a 5-5.5 inch screen.

  • Timmy

    Say no to 2K display

  • Andre Lemard

The only Sony phone I’d want to see a 2k screen on is the second iteration of the Z Ultra. I don’t think it’s necessary for the eventual Z5 to have one.

  • A.o.D

I always prefer FHD over those 2k screens for better performance, better battery endurance and whatsoever. But, general customers will always go for the phones with 2k screens at the same price from other manufacturers. In the end sony loses customers. So if they don’t want 2k screens they should atleast bring some new screen tech (oled maybe).

  • Malik Shahid Farooq aWaN

    I. 100% agree with him. Great decision

  • Alexandr Deminenko

2K The Best! No Full HD

  • ??. ????????

Great news, FHD and better battery ;)

  • Niels d. G.

OLED has bad colour balance though. Bad whites, mostly. And they tend to go greenish after time.

  • DanielGearSolid

Thank you, battery life is way more important

  • Nabeel Raza

I will not at all buy a phone with 2K display.
So freaking useless, plain gimmick and overload on the processor and battery.

  • gamer324

Jdi developed OLEDs a while back with RGBW pixels, this not only helps boost the brightness but also keeps the colour balance in check. Plus I’m sure Sony would utilise a technique similar to LG’s OLED i.e. all 4 (RGBW) subpixels are constructed with the same colour OLED (usually white) but then a colour filter is applied on 3 of the four subpixels.

  • gamer324

An OLED FHD Z5 with the s820 SoC and 4 gigs of RAM would be beast. Bring it on Sony :)

  • crazychef83

Well I would say that I will settle on FHD.
I don’t think the eye would notice the difference between FHD and QHD in a Display that Small.
Also Depending if you are streaming movies or not.
I have movies downloaded to my phone and they are not in 1080p because tey take up a lot of memory and on VUDU they don’t stream at HDX resolution.

  • Kok Wei

FHD is already good for me coz on a such small display, we can hardly tell the difference between 2k and FHD, plus the battery life is my major concern. However, most of the competitors have already started to use 2k screen on their flagships, so i would say that Sony has to come out with something that is great enough to attract customers, like better camera software and nicely polished UI.

  • Meliodas

Wow! I can’t see any pixels on my Z2 :(

  • Emil Oskarsson

I think 2k is fine on a tablet with an 8-10 inch display though :) But you’re right a 2k screen on a smartphone is totally useless, since you barely can see the pixels on FHD screens that small, and just a perforamnce and power hog. :p

  • Emil Oskarsson

sure i can see the pixels when i have the phones like 0-20 cm from my eyes but i never have the phone that close to my face ;)

  • lovebmw

I KNOW IT WORKS, BUT HONESTLY ITS A SCAM FOR IDIOTS…. FINALLY a DECISION FANS AND SONY AGREE ON….. IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO USELESS

  • Keion London

I don’t agree sorry, prefer quad hd display. People argue about it’s usefulness but I have seen the Note 4′ s screen in person and it’s absolutely stunning. So next device might be the note 5.

  • Timel

I agree about Note 4’s display, it is very beautiful and absolutely stunning but that’s not because 2K resolutions, that’s because Samsung’s OLED tech a.k.a Super Amoled.

  • Battal Aljadei

Sony mobile’s never has any plan to launch anything significant !

  • First: The Note 4 have a 5,7″ Screen. You should consider it. Second: What’s about the battery life? I don’t think QHD is needed on such a small device. FHD is just enough…

  • Farid Cooper

Satisfied with 1080 screens on 5-6 inch screens same goes with 720 on z3 compact but I’m looking forward to 2560 resolution on 8 inch tabs

  • mukul verma

Here Android M comes…lets start thinking which phones will get?? :-P
    Android M supports fingerprint api..

  • Siyam Hossain

Full HD is enough for eye and good for battery. But people always move towards new technology. So sony will stay behind other competitors. If they want to stay ahead they need: 2k display, better image processing, OIS, Fingerprint scanner, fast charging, wireless charging. These things are essential now in a flagship phone.

  • smileman

agree with sony that battery trumps qhd

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Absolutely, they perfected the FullHD ips screen and think about user experience ie batterylife performance…
As they said they are no longer in highest tech battle mode but in enhancing user experience mode
If batteries get longer life improvement in near future, 2k is a go cause they made it already for z4 tab…
Although z3+ could ve had a bigger battery
They should ditch the thinning trend also……

  • aiamkesz

    Is IPhone behind then?

  • Timel

I got your point but User Experience is the most important thing

  • kido

Amen!! no qhd screens on xperia phones please, better battery life makes more sense then chasing extra pixels that we can hardly see… :) for tablets and maybe the ultra series (if the z5 ultra will come into existence) 2k screen is preferable, but for phones, no thank you, fhd is enough :) :) :)

  • Sadab Khan

The only reason I’m even considering to buy the Z3 plus is because it does not have a QHD screen…. Can anyone tell me about the heating issues? Has it been fixed??

  • Siyam Hossain

Definitely behind in terms of features. But people love apple because they think iPhone increases their social status. It is a total mindset. They provide simplicity but quality. Sony is not apple. They compete with samsung, lg, htc.

  • inspire

Although it’s a good decision and it really makes sense but one can see tomorrow when the review sites such as GSMarena, Androidauthority, fonearena, etc. will bring bad PR to Sony due to this by saying “not with the competition”, “from yyesteryears” and so on.
And people from the countries who generate most clicks on such websites (and masses from elsewhere as well and Timel-alikes) will be taking the criticism to next level without applying any brains.

All in all, a sane decision but not good for marketing.

  • Jiyeon90

at least Sony knows whats up

  • aks316

Hi i am confused about the 64bit thing.. Does it make a difference? Rest i am happy buying Z3.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Offtopic but I just found a new feature in the latest album app update from Sony, you can now choose the whole wallpaper and set as background, in the past you could only use a part of it :p Just wanted to mention it :)

  • J Cav the Great

Someone gets it…now let’s talk about those bezels.

  • Timel

Don’t compare Sony to Apple please
Sony will never win Apple anyway

  • Timel

Full HD is still more than enough for 6 inch display.

  • Amimanot

Thats from the latest update to the photo editor by the way, not album.

  • Amimanot

So far the only difference between 64 and 32 bit that I know of is that phones can now use 4 GB of ram and above (which so far very few 64 bit phones even have 4GB of ram. Other than that, the ol’ snapdragon 801 is good enough for a year or so

  • Amimanot

Surprisingly, Timel agrees with Sony with this decision

  • Asa

Well said. At this point, QHD is nothing more than a marketing gimmick and bragging point for anything below 6/7 inches.

  • Ndlelenhle Njoko

I am also in disagreement with that sentiment. People need to discern the effects of the technology employed on a display from those of squeezing more pixels in. Pixelation may be one element that affects display quality, but there are many more relevant qualities (albeit, post 300ppi) that have absolutely nothing to do with the number of pixels. The Note 4’s display attributes its splendor mostly to its nice colour balance and vibrance (Dislay-Mate checks for colour accuracy, which has nothing to do with the number of pixels).

  • Ndlelenhle Njoko

You know, most people do wish that they were blessed with the kind of eyes you’ve got (just kidding, mate).
Seriously though, I still can’t make out a single pixel off my sister’s Xperia S (which, by the way, is a 720p, 342ppi display), and I know of no other human being that’s been able to achieve that.

  • SkyS1gn

    Good!

  • aks316

Thank you :) Z3 it is thn.

  • Great Dude
  • kewsvnet

It would be a very strange day indeed when my 5″ phone has a higher resolution than my 42″ TV…Thankfully people at Sony haven’t lost their minds! Battery life is far more important on mobile!!! Keep up the good work!

  • Ayad Fahos

What battery life is dying after lolipop update inz3 dual thanks sony

  • In other news Sony has been kicked out from the top ten shitdroid manufacturers. So yeah, keep doing whacha doing, Pony.

  • roeshak

What they need is to seriously upgrade the camera module to include a 6 axis OIS and a faster sharper 6 layered lens. Forget the s6, the g4 is the benchmark now when it comes to camera performance outside of the 1020.
Qhd is not important bbut they’re lagging behind on the camera front and they need to close that gap. Just saw a comparison done by techsource between g4 and s6 and the g4 blew it away in all lighting conditions especially lowlight.
It’s night photos and videos where leagues ahead of the s6. The low iso slow shutter photos it produced just trounced the high iso faster shutter noisy photos from the s6.
Trouble is I don’t see how Sony can compete with the g4s camera with this nonsensical obsession with thinness. Maybe if they weren’t so crazily and stupidly obsessed with making insanely thin devices they might be able to put a more advanced camera module and lens combo into their devices as well a much bigger battery to power, mmmmmh I don’t know, a qhd panel perhaps!
I’m absolutely sick of listening to arrogant Sony execs lecturing on what’s needed and what’s not. Someone needs to remind them that they’re at the back of the line and need to pull their socks up and sprint faster instead of this idiotic talk about the merits of what they’re doing.

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Atleast z4 tablet already comes with 2k display.

  • Bruno

    Smartphones!!!

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

I know that and I dont mind if sony using FHD for their smartphone cause the tablet offer 2k display with a bigger display.

  • ????

    MAKES COMPLETE SENSE

  • ????

    not anymore

  • ????

it’s ok for the pentile amoled because 2k is almost the same as fhd ips lcd in terms of sharpnessq

  • Pius Ho

I had that in my Kit Kat Z1 before the update, so yeah.. Amimanot is right.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Hopefully a new Z Ultra will have a 2K screen and the same great battery life

  • Oh!

No 2K screens. What about fingerprint sensor?

  • Emil Oskarsson

I have it on my xperia z with KitKat :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

    Oh OK my bad ;D

  • Timel

2K display trend has already begun with Samsung and LG, Sony can be just a follower.

  • Timel

So funny You’re still stuck with an old story, I’m so pity your brain.

  • jag

I will buy 2K or 4K screens if there is an abundant content to watch/ play with it!

  • Timel

2K display trend has already begun with Samsung and LG, even Sharp which is launching 4K bezel-less smartphone. Samsung and LG also move forward with OLED display and flexible OLED while Sony’s still stick with an old tech like LCD.

Now if you don’t blind you’ll see that Sony can be nothing except a follower. Sony can’t compare itself to Apple, Sony is in android world, and Sony Mobile as a android devices manufacturer and a direct competitor to Samsung, LG, Hauwei and Xiaomi. Sony should know that all android manufacturers will always compete against the competitors with lastest technologies and coolest innovation but unlike Sony, Sony is always lack behind competitors because Sony has less money to spend with R&D and maketing so Sony must stop selling smartphone and television, it’s clear that Sony is too weak to compete with any competitors now.

  • Melfes Wired

but that still makes no sense, and Sharp’s new 4k panel is not for smartphone

  • SlaughTerror

Nei…, What’s wrong being a follower, a follower can learn lots from its master until the follower itself able to be a master too, Sony have lots of time to learn from its competitors, from its mistakes, as long as Sony’s alive that is….

the OLED display technology sure is nice, but I’ll just wait till there’s a smartphone which can bend like I-phone 6 but none of the hardwares are broken when bended :v

It can’t be helped that Sony has financial problems, but I don’t think it would be a good idea to stop producing smartphones, and TVs, rather it would be better if they release only a handset for each of the segments in a year which we would want to see…

Considering Sony has its own Xperia fanbase, I don’t think Sony is too weak to compete, yes they are rather weak at the moment, but who knows what’s going to happen in the future, Sony might outbetter Samsung and Apple in the future

  • Timel

    I hope so

  • Timel

So funny that you still stuck with an old story, so pity your brain.

  • SlaughTerror

that totally relies on how Sony Mobile going to market their business in future then, well let’s just hope for their best while not dropping the smartphone business

  • iia3ezu

I think 2K is okay for a phablet around 5.5 to 6 inch display.

1080p is just right for 5.2 inch and smaller compact phones.

Surely the battery technology has progressed over the years to make the sacrifice in battery life negligible?

  • Timel

So, Sony must stop selling smartphone and television, Sony must save their money, do not waste it, save the money for PlayStation division, for alpha camera division, for Sony Semiconductors, for new advanced technology of the next era. To be honest, I dont think Sony will win the recent smartphone war.

  • Timel

If Sony want to show off their merit about long battery life, Why they don’t deverlop new type of battery? isn’t denying technology like 2K, 4K. Shame on Sony.

  • SlaughTerror

why did you even delete the comment if you’re going to write the same thing again -_-

  • Niels d. G.

Well you never know on which component(s) Sony might cheap out.

  • ZoltánK

I can’t make difference between FHD and QHD with my eyes on 5 inch class displays. So developing better FHD is more important than targeting QHD.

I don’t believe a word they say. They said that only the Z series would be getting Lollipop. Big lie that was. :)

  • Bob

what exactly does this article prove?

  • hmmm

    No

  • Jecht_Sin

Who the heck needs 2K on 6 inch screens..

  • ?????

2k for a tablet – definitely, for a smartphone – no. Thanks, Sony

  • Geese Howard

Couldn’t agree more. 2K may be the future, but until manufactures come up with a good way to harness that power and make it battery life friendly, I don’t give a shit about 2K. Companies who jump for the gun to show off isn’t really thinking about it wisely and are simply being hasty.

  • DanielGearSolid

I can barely see a difference in quality from 1080p to 2k on screens this size. Personally I think 120hz/240hz refresh rate would be a cooler thing to push for

  • Vuyo Ncube

LG: the G4 copied the Quantum Dot display tech found in recent Xperia flagships and had a much worse brightness range and power draw than that the Z3. Meanwhile, Sony/JDI implemented Memory-in-Pixel IPS tech into the Z4 tablet and sidestepped high resolution/Snapdragon 810 issues. The G Flex 2 was a flop with poor battery life and more lag than the original G Flex. The POLED display was nothing to smile about against SAMOLED nor IPS LCD. Every LG fan I see on GSM Arena, Phone Arena etc. complains that the G2 was the last truly great LG smartphone. The G3 and G4 have nice cameras but everything was mediocre.

Sharp: what do we need a 4K LCD for on a smartphone again? Is there an SoC than can push that many pixels comfortably in native resolution even with Android M support? Wait, you said LCD is “old” yet Sharp, Xiaomi, Huawei, LG etc. use it. How dumb are you?

Xiaomi: They only started pouring R&D money now with the Note Pro with thermal dissipation for the SD810 but never ‘innovated’ before. Their displays? JDI. Their cameras? Sony. Their chipsets? Qualcomm. They don’t make their own stuff.

The rest of the chinese: similar to Xiaomi.

Apple: what innovation and latest technologies? They made the screens bigger (copying Android), added PDAF in a Sony sensor (copying Samsung), covered the iPhone 6 in metal (copying HTC), made a Pay system in response to Google Wallet. They aren’t the first to use fingerprint scanners (Motorola was).

Does “Timel” mean “intellectually dishonest” in your language? You yap “INOVASHUN!” but I don’t think you know what it means.
