Sony responds to Xperia Z3+ heating issues

by XB on 12th June 2015

in Problems, Xperia Z4 and Z3+ series

z3plus-featuredConcerns around thermal management and overheating have been dogging the Sony Xperia Z4/Z3+ over the last few weeks. Dutch site GSMinfo.nl recently received their review sample and found in their initial testing that the Xperia Z3+ tended to overheat frequently. The camera or certain intensive games would automatically close after a few minutes due to excessive heat.

On contacting Sony about these issues, it issued a statement to the site saying that these problems are limited to small number of phones. Sony also said that it will be releasing an update this summer to address this heating issue. This software fix could involve more throttling to keep the temperatures down.

Sony statement on Xperia Z3+ heating concerns

“The Xperia Z3+ is a high-performance 64-bit octa-core device with advanced camera technology, in some cases, additional heat can cause functions to stop. Enabling applications can also be felt by the user through the glass on the back. This is normal for the unit and should cause no concern.”

Thanks Nick and Thomas!

  • Is the phone specially engineered to be able to tolerate high temperatures for long periods of time and not warp or melt, then? I’m just hoping it doesn’t run so hot that it burns someone… That’s the last thing they need right now.

  • Timel

    Z5 anyway

  • Timel

I am not getting the Z3+. Don’t want to be working with a burning brick though it might help me keep my hands warm in Canadian winter..

  • Timel

“Z3 plus is device with advanced camera technology”

    Stop talking bullshit Sony!
Z3+’s camera is worse than LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6.

  • Vuyo Ncube

Qualcomm needs a smack over the head. They crippled LG, crippled HTC, crippled Xiaomi, crippled Sony. Nvidia is out of the smartphone game. Mediatek SoCs are decent by now but have crappy GPUs. Samsung’s yield rate is probably too low to make Exynos chips for other companies.

The majority of the Android flagship 64 bit race was a spectacular screw up and my Z1 is not impressed.

  • Igy Tech

    What did buyers expect?

Camera sensors are same arent they? Only difference being lens, imaging processor and software

  • Tibor Hornyák

LOL another bullshit story from a Sony fan.

    it’s too late Sony

    Sony loses again this round
Samsung, Apple and LG win again

Kaz must do something with mobile division , Sony Mobile Communications is full of stupid people.

I still has hope with Z5, Don’t disappointed me

  • Fredrik

only a small number of z3+ produced or planned? :)

  • Luis Ramirez

Errr the response sounded like m9 damage control response…

  • Timel

It proved that sensor is important but it’s not everything.

Yeah! Now it’s the perfect choice for a top-spec phone at a good price.

  • Caio Faria

I will buy a LG G4, now I’m using a Xperia T and I have to do an upgrade, but this Xperia Z3+ is so disappointed, principally this heating issues and the same Z2/Z3 camera. What do you think?

  • ?????

Just buy the Xperia Z3 – practically the same device without heating issues and cheaper. ;)

  • rzero21

that response is really lame. No wonder the Mobile department is on the red line. If they keep it like this, I suspect Sony will close their mobile department soon.

  • theskig

I agree go and buy a Z3 you won’t miss anything and you’ll save a lot of money.
And you can use a supersweet magnetic dock.

  • Timel

G4 is a great choice, it’s is much better than Z2,Z3 and Z3+

Why you don’t wait the Z5

  • Luca

How. Many. Times. Will. You. Say. That.

    I’m not sure

“This is normal for the unit and should cause no concern.”
Heat doesn’t cause concern; it creates displeasure for the user.

  • Mokhtar Mouhib

    i already switch to s6 edge .. after z z1 z2 .. sony keep losing their consumers

  • Anybody expected anything else? Just trying to defraud their customers by selling crap again. Sony, business as usual.

  • theskig

FM radio and waterproof are enough. Summer is coming :)

  • ?????

have a good time in the pool :)

  • Andy Roid

    Your translation is off.

The Xperia Z3+ is a high performance 64 bit octa-core device with advanced camera technologies, in some cases excess heat can cause applications to quit. The extra warmth can also be felt by the user through the glass in the back. This is normal for the unit and should cause no concern.

  • Caio Faria

I think the Xperia Z3 is old, and I don’t care about the dock. I thought I’d wait for the Z5, but my Xperia T is very slow and buggy.

  • Timel

    LOL

No wonder if Sony Mobile will go bankrupt in soon

  • Timel

    It’s the truth
Sony has no money to spend with R&D
Sony is just a follower now

Sony this era is lack of innovation and always be ten steps behind the competitors

  • Jecht_Sin

Like what Sony was supposed to do before launching the PS4? Keep dreaming. lol

  • Timel

    Definitely!

It’s clear that Sony Mobile has no bright future anymore. Really can’t help, Xperia products suck!

  • Timel

LG G4 is much better than Z2, Z3 or even Z3+

But I think you should wait for the Z5 , give sony one last chance.

Wow, a nice comment from you! I like it!

  • DBS

Dear lord, is it possible that even at damage control Sony is failing? ARGH this is so infuriating…

  • DBS

You’ll be better served with the G4. You won’t get 2 days of battery life but you’ll get great performance AND the best camera on an Android phone so far.

  • Electrify85

If apps are crashing due to heat, that is NOT normal, especially for a flagship device!

I just hope any throttling the patch causes is not noticeable.

  • Electrify85

Also if this only affecting a small number of units, why are they issuing a patch for all units? Why not say that these units are likely defective and will be replaced without question? They’re talking out of both sides of their mouth!

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I wonder how can this big company have so ridiculous staff. Damn it !! It would be tragic if the company will be fall just because it have that Kaz and staff.

of course most of people will choose the smartphone with the great camera yeah that’s why Sony flagship phones are always unsaleable

  • Timel

Damn it sony. You are so close to creating the perfect phone. The sony xperia z3 plus is a all rounded phone.
Stero speakers like htc phones.(but admittedly htc boomsound is still better)
Premium build with metal and glass.
The only waterproof phone in 2015 with a capless usb port and headphone jack (Hooray)
A sharp vibrate screen(1080p is already very sharp, no point having a 2k display that drains the battery)
A Large 20.7 mp camera sensor(it is better to use manual mode than the not so superior auto)
    A long battery life
But sadly suffering from overheating issues

  • Pickerpoc

THIS PROBLEM IS ALSO WITH Z1 IN JELLYBEAN, SONY PROVIDES SOLUTION BY GIVING UPDATES IN KITKAT. CAMERA CRASHES WHEN IT OVERHEATS IN JELLYBEAN. SO IN Z3+ THIS CAN BE FIX.WAIT FOR UPDATE.

  • Aiden Pearce

If the problem can be fixed by a patch.. Why not take it that way instead of replacing units

  • Aiden Pearce

The user who reported his unit is working fine must have got the fine running device lot.
So his device temperature is fine and comes hand to hand with z3.

  • P9

I think it could because of lollipop too, hope Sony could fix it in a major update
sometimes of my Z lollipop :3

  • Well said! The truth is probably that all phones are affected (otherwise they should explain the difference between phones that are affected and those that aren’t, and replace or repair defective units), but only a limited number of users will notice.

  • Vjekoslav Andric

And now they wont let me post anything, after I posted that camera comparisson G4/Z3+ link, and those thermal results from other phones proving Z3+ heats exactly the same as previous xperias…., and recieved nothing but hate insults for it….

  • rockz0829

Sammy does not need to fix this issue. Smartphones do heat up. And it does stop when it reaches the processor heat point. I have the S6E and I used it for games and etc and pretty understandable that it heats up when using like gaming and opening high intensive apps but it does not get to the point where it does stop functioning like hell like with the recent Sony phones.

  • Timel

Hey! I hate fanboys, that’s my standpoint
I hate fanboys of any brand
Whatever Sony fanboys, Samsung fanboys, Apple fanboys, LG fanboys, Google fanboys, Microsoft fanboys and etc I don’t care even you, if you’re a fanboy I will hate you too

  • Kamil1308

I have Z1 from the week it got out. Never a single time I had a OVERHEATING PROBLEM with them phone. Camera Never crashed, nothing ever crash in that matter of fact. So I have no idea what kind of Z1 you have because it can be the genuine one or you are just simply trolling.

  • Kamil1308

Just wait for the Z3+ to come out and look out for reviews, you can decide then.

  • Kamil1308

“Newer more powerful mobile processors are going to do this…and it’s
going to happen more and more as there’s no internal cooling
system…it’s the same for a computer that you push to the limit. The
QualComm 810 does the same exact thing and I’ve also seen it happen on
    the 805 too.”

  • Timel

    And the shitty camera

Z3 plus still stuck with the shitty camera as previous phones

Sony must blow everyone’s minds with the awesome camera like Nokia Pureview or better than that

  • Electrify85

This. On the plus side, “flagship” Android prices are going to drop substantially due to unsold 810 based handsets. By this time next year, expect a ton of new budget models using the 810 due to overstock.

  • sader

By the way, Samsung Galaxy s6 also has heat issues :

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60025905&postcount=10

Fast processors generate heat, that’s just physics

  • Electrify85

So much this. Sony’s phones are all around performers. Hopefully Sony will be smart and restart production of the Z3.

  • Aiden Pearce

Exactly!!! Imagine people returning laptops because it overheats when gaming!!!
Phones don’t have internal cooling like laptops and have processor nearly equal to them ,they are ought to heat.
Some people can’t bare a Little more heat and start ranting.. Oh my god my phone is heating and blah blah..
I have seen several Samsung blown up
    Lg blown up
Never heard any Sony blew up..
Still those media fools are ranting…

  • Kamil1308

Cant see how it would effect a normal daily user, that might play couple of games from time to time. The phone is only going to heat when you are going to be playing for a really long time and if you are going to be recording 4K which to be honest not many people will do.

  • Aiden Pearce

its a phone after all, what people expect 24hr gaming ??
Not even a gaming laptop could do that.
and i think it won’t be that hot to pour water, i would want to stay away from water as my prev. Z3 died under tap.

  • Kamil1308

Ya exactly what I was thinking, if you wanna play games so bad get yourself a console or a PC and stop blaming the phone when you are pushing it to the limit using all it resources.
I don’t think it will either, whenever I will get it I can bet that it wont be over heating for me at all.
Sorry to hear that about your Z3.

  • Boonerski

I’m starting to think Sony should have just stuck with the 808 instead of the 810. Then again, it’s not top-tier and can’t compete with Samsung’s top performing Exynos. That and they should change the materials they use in their flagships; metal and glass don’t play nice with heat with my Z1 being a testament of that…

  • I’m a little late to the Z-series (but not Xperia!) party… Got a Z1 when the Z3 released. I’ve got time to wait for a Z5, though. It seems the fact that they released the Japanese Z4 as the Z3+ elsewhere means they probably have a more substantial upgrade already in the works that won’t have as many issues and that they just released this because it was pretty much already done and manufactured by the time Qualcomm fixed the heat issues with their next processor.

Camera is good, the software implementation on auto mode is very bad.

Apple iPhone, Samsung (Note 4), (I believe the GS6 uses in house Isocell by Sammy), LG all have used Sony camera modules but they have better software implementations.

Best mobile camera is probably the sensors used by Nokia, but that’s a different level all together.

  • Timel

    I know right

  • Abhinav Tella

I agree but only because of the software side of it, which Sony does not seem to improve. The iPhone 6 (Exmor RS unknown version), Note 4 & S6 (IMX 240), LG G4 (IMX234) use Sony sensors with much better results because they put a lot more effort into the software side. I have to use manual mode to get good pics on my Z3 which is a hassle compared to the defective auto mode.

The Z1/2/3 use the IMX 220.

  • Tomislav Mati?

Yes it is for me. It is summer and I am going to beach. Wather is all around me. And I have to protect my phone. But I have waterproof phone so I don’t have to be careful or yell when someone accidentally splash my phone. I am going on beach with no worry that my phone will die. That is why I am buying Sony XPERIA Z phones. Yes camera is not so good and they must fix that. Other than that it is good.
You see what marketing is doing? Samsung and Apple have the best advertisement (in advertisement they are best of the best), but not so good phones. Sony is not perfect but neather are Samsung, Apple or LG. I didn’t see phone without flaw yet.

Maybe only the T-Mobile batches (D6616) are messed up, I don’t know but you would think after 9 months the D6616 production quality would improve from initial batches. I know I’m not the only one according to my local T-Mobile store…. As a first time customer, Sony has not given me much confidence. I’m hoping the replacement coming on Monday is good as I really do like the Z3 its battery life is just phenomenal like the LG G2 when it first released.

  • Lean In My Cup

I was thinking about buying the Z3+ but reading this article and all these comments make me hesitate. Should I buy it? Or nah?

  • HAWX

Wait for in depth reviews and then decide. But my advice as an Xperia fan, no.

  • Larry R

My one week old T-mobile Z3 has been perfect. Butter smooth. Replaced my original Z. Great camera in automode. Great data speeds in Canada and Hong Kong. Just slightly lower than LTE at home in USA. or WiFi. Best phone I have ever owned. Had to get this since it was discounted, and esp once I found out 810 chip for Z3 plus, only 16gb vs 32gb in 6616…and of course WiFi calling on T-mobile 6616’s. Lollipop really amazing on device!

  • Timel

    It’s not laggy at all

  • Kamil1308

808 is also over heating. You have to get over that if we are going to have better and faster processors they are going to be over heating.

  • Shravan SP
  • Boonerski

Well either way, aside from Samsung’s flagships utilizing their in-house processors, it’s not a good time to buy Android flagships. That is, if Mediatek’s Helios chipset is any good.

  • Kamil1308

Galaxy Edge is overheating to higher temperatures then any phone out there. To be honest if you are just a normal user I don’t see how you would ever have to worry about over heating. If you are not going to be playing games for a long period of time or recording in 4K there be nothing to worry about as your phone wont over heat.

  • Timel

Sorry but G4’s Camera is very cool, much better Z3 plus’s camera.

  • Timel

    Yeah S6 edge and G4

  • Timel

I’m not sure but it’s truth , Samsung and Apple are saved now, these two companies no need to depend on Qualcomnn Snapdragon, they can design and produce their own processors

too bad, Sony can’t even design their own mobile processor.

  • Abhinav Tella

Lollipop has a major bug (Google’s fault) “Mobile Radio Active” when any internet apps are used sometimes they can create a major wakelock issue when mobile data is activated. Its a Google fault, all Lollipop devices are affected yet Google has deemed it as “small” priority for some reason despite it having the 3rd most number of votes on the Android Issue Tracker.

Link to Google’s issue tracker about the Lollipop issue:
    https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=165558

  • Electrify85

I would see if you could hunt down a Z3. Despite no longer being listed on their website, I contacted my local Wind store and they had a whole bunch still in stock.

  • Lean In My Cup

Thanks for your reply, but I already have the Z3 at the moment. Its a great phone and I love it but my contract ends next month.. so why not get a new one.

Sorry for my sh*tty english, im still learning.

  • Igy Tech

    G4 has S808

  • Electrify85

Technology is a funny thing. If they managed to release a mobile processor with the performance of the 801 a few years back, it would literally melt the phone in a heartbeat. Today such chips can operate smoothly with limited heat issues. If these processors are creating serious heat problems, it means the tech as designed is not ready for mass adoption.

The frustrating truth is that Sony dropped the ball here. They saw the writing on the wall, yet still decided to go with the 810. During the testing phase, they likely saw the problems and did not care. Perhaps it was too late into development and they could not do anything about it? Perhaps the suits demanded top performance despite warnings? I don’t know, I wasn’t there. What I do know is that if there is one company which is not immune to making dumb moves, it is Sony.

Another theory is that cost played a role. Despite being top of the line, the problems with the Flex 2 and M9 likely meant that Qualcomm is trying to clear out these chips as quickly as possible. This is likely why the OnePlus Two is using these chips, and why I am betting many new “budget” phones in the next 12 months will use them as well.

The best we can hope for is that Sony either restarts Z3 production, or quietly releases a “revised” model with a non-defective SoC despite claims that they are only looking at one flagship per year.

  • Electrify85

    Your English is fine. :)

The Z3 isn’t even a year old, so personally I would keep it until the 2016 Sony, where it is likely the parties involved will learn their lessons. Even if Sony still insists with putting the most advanced tech it can in its phone, it is unlikely that Qualcomm will dare to put out a SoC with such problems. Also if you are off contract, you might be able to get a better price on your plan or bring your device to another carrier and enjoy a lower rate.

If you MUST have the latest phone, I would go with LG or Samsung (my preference is for LG) for the time being, and then get the next Xperia when it comes out next year.

What I just said for LG G4? I don’t know how good Z3+ camera is but LG G4 is very good and I think it will be better than Z3+ camera. Camera on G4 is not cool only very good. Cool is something new and different from others in smartphone that everyone is going to notice easily (impress on first sight) and say wow. That is leather back on G4 and screen on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

  • Timel

G4 Camera is very cool (Not only “Coo”l but “Super Cool” actually) I mean its manual mode which is ten steps ahead Z3+ camera

  • Timel

    Atleast it’s better than 810

  • Timel

    Z2 camera.. meh -_-

  • Timel

Improve the camera quality and Sony Mobile will rise

  • Timel

Z3+ camera? Yeah! bad auto mode while its manual mode is too normal. Z3+ camera is unremarkable and also worse than other competitors in some points

SO why people have to buy the Z3+?

    For its waterproof feature?

NOOOOOOOO! Because camera is the big deal, In reality most people don’t care much about waterproof feature, camera is more important for them, that’s why Sony flagship phones have always been unsaleable.

Samsung S6 edge camera’s auto mode is much faster, smarter and better than the auto mode of Xperia Z3 Plus

LG went hard with the G4 Camera especially its manual mode, LG G4 Camera’s manual mode is super cool, many reviews said that “LG G4 is the best smartphone camera so far! ” While Z3+ manual mode is quite normal, its camera UI is so stupid and outdated.

Hope Sony will get the point, hope Sony will realise before it’s too late.

  • Timel

    Wait for the Z5

  • Timel

Xperia Z3? Yeah and you still can’t run away from the shitty camera

  • Igy Tech

Wouldn’t buy somethimg I know that is not OK and than cry to Sony, as today buyers do.

  • Steve

I’ve used z,z1,z1 compact and now using z3 dual before used ion. Never faced anything like that.everytime I got the mobile within a month after release….

Whatever the case I’ll find out Tuesday or tomorrow how my next replacement turns out….. I have owned every major brand of Android phone and this is a first lol. Then again granted I’m sure others have had bad luck with other brands as well but I seem to be 6 times unlucky with the Z3 lol.

My local T-Mobile store said they had a few people with multiple returns so they said they will just switch me over to another device if this happens again.

  • Timel

Yeah this’s summer, but don’t worry at all because those people who are the owners of great smartphone cameras like S6 edge, LG G4, and iPhone 6 plus they will buy waterproof case for their smartphones exactly.

But the shitty camera problem, how to fix it? you can do anything with it.

  • Tomislav Mati?

You are obsessed with phone cameras. You are taking a lot of pictures even when phone is in waterproof case. Very usable when in waterproof case. I have this waterproof case for iPhone 6 and I don’t use it any more because my phone is cumbrous with this case. Can’t use it normally. Yes I admit that Sony has shity auto mode. But I don’t see your point here. We can do this all day. You are the only one talking about shity Sony camera on Z3+ overheating problems post. In this moment bigger problem is overheating. Can you talk about this?

  • Tomislav Mati?

Not very good I see. But there is fast charge. Anyhow poor battery life.

A shitty camera that takes better photos than G4

  • ph00ny

    I think S808 on G4 doesn’t support quick charging

  • ph00ny

Sorry but all mobile devices will throttle at one point or another except S810 seems to be getting to that point quicker than others.

  • ph00ny

FM radio not so much. Waterproof maybe so

  • Igy Tech

I prefer devices which throll later

“that these problems are limited to small number of phones. Sony also
said that it will be releasing an update this summer to address this
    heating issue.”

English translation: We have only managed to produced a limited number of Z3+ (hence reference to small number). We did not finished testing the firmware, so we put the beta on it. The final version is expected this summer? Heck it is already summer. Australian Summer?

    So here comes number 7…..

  • Abhinav Tella

Wow, really? Surprisingly, I have had bad luch EVERY TIME a manufacturer has stated that a problem is limitid to a small number of units.

If that was true, I would have no problem replacing my obviously defective unit. I think I’ll give them a call.
