Verizon discontinues the Xperia Z3v

in Xperia Z3 series

Xperia Z3vThe Verizon Xperia Z3v (D6708) appears to have reached EOL (end-of-life), ten months after launch on the network. A few readers have got in touch claiming that Verizon support has confirmed the Xperia Z3v is now retired. The Xperia Z3v is nowhere to be seen on the Verizon Wireless website, with the only Sony product available to order being the Xperia Z2 Tablet.

The news is perhaps not that surprising given that we expect the follow-up device, the Xperia Z4v, to launch in the coming weeks. We reached out to Verizon Wireless for confirmation but have not yet received a reply, we’ll update this post accordingly.

Thanks Joseph!

If only Verizon didn’t insist on making Sony phones butt ugly in the US, maybe then they’d have a market there.

  • RbbrDcky

Am I the only one excited about the Verizon Z4v? It looks like the phone that literally has everything you could want in a smartphone! State of the art processing power, 3GB of RAM, big battery, waterproof, great cameras, wireless charging, and the best feature–PS4 Remote Play (which I use almost night while in bed!)

  • RbbrDcky

I actually happen to think that the Z4v is one of their best looking to date! They really shrank the bezels.

  • But there’s two categories where it still has to prove itself – battery life and updates. And I’m not optimistic about those. 3000mAh is not enough for a QHD display with Snapdragon 810, and Verizon is very, very bad at updates.

  • Augustine Kau

    those logos though

  • Timel

    Im not surprise at all…

  • Gitarooman

Sony mobile is North America is really a total joke.

  • mohsen

thats good, US people must use shit iphone. they must not touch Sony devices

  • Bennder

Yes you are only one, most people waiting z5 to be released

  • GigaSPX

There was supposed to be fucking Lollipop, but they keep saying there’s no date. There’s a support page for the Z3v, but not an actual product page. If you do follow the link for the Z3v, it just redirects you to the Z4v.

With Verizon doing their new crazy customer plans soon, they’re really going bat shit.

  • LiterofCola

    That thick ugly body too.

  • mUSICA

got a podcast update on whatsNEw

  • Alvin

They z4v is coming out, i hope it’ll be a huge hit

  • DBS

Not EVERYTHING. Great cameras? No. It’s still the same crappy OIS-less one from the Z1. Great in 2013/14, not acceptable any more in 2015.

  • RbbrDcky

I understand that it’s the popular/bandwagon opinion that Sony doesn’t actually iterate their cameras with each successive release but the experts would clearly disagree. As DxOMark rankings show, each new model gets better. And funny how one of the top pro’s of the Z3+ camera, again according to DxOMark, is: “Stabilization is very good and provides pleasing video”. Sony has been doing SteadyShot (image stabilization) for a very long time especially in their Action Cams (which I have and love!). OIS does not make the camera. I own the Z3v right and the pictures from that phone are unbelievable!

  • DBS

DxOMark is bullshit my friend. They’re as much experts on cameras as Donald Trump is an expert in diplomacy. They pick up cameras and run software through them. Well, software can be deceived. And OEMs often make it so that the hardware deceives these “stats” software to make their products look better on paper than real life.

The lack of OIS can NOT be circumvented by SteadyShot, specially on night photography. No matter how hard you try to convince yourself of that. Because you need the HARDWARE physically stable to be able to capture more light without losing focus. The only way you can get a good nightshot out of a Z3 is by using a tripod. Otherwise, forget it. Also, the complete lack of full manual control (that means shutter speed and manual focus) will also play against it.

You THINK the pictures from your Z3V are unbelievable? They are if you’re comparing them to a Motorola or an HTC. Unfortunately, the day you put them up against a Nokia, the LG G4 or the Samsung S6, you’ll quickly notice that they are FAR from unbelievable. Actually they’re unbelievably bad considering it’s Sony hardware.
And I write this as someone who was accustomed to Nokia’s amazing cameras, came to Sony after Nokia left because I believed Sony had the best cameras, and had the disappointment of a lifetime with the camera on the Z3.

  • RbbrDcky

I guess the question is when does the law of diminishing returns kick in? You can keep comparing cameras that are marginally better than the other but past a certain point, why should you care? The fact of the matter is that there is a set of minimum requirements that a phone needs to achieve to appease the masses. The only way you can actually differentiate varying levels of quality is by directly comparing them, which is something only these tech journalists and reviewers have the luxury of doing usually. My phone takes wonderful photos for me so I’m happy. If you are really that person that is always chasing the absolute marginal best, how are you ever satisfied??

Actually I’m not always chasing the absolute best. Otherwise I’d have already dumped my Z3C for the G4. The point here is, when it comes to the camera, Sony phones have absolutely nothing to offer consumers in terms of quality. And that’s why Sony keeps losing marketshare and money. By staying behind, by offering just the minimum that fools the average consumer, Sony stopped offering anything innovative that actually leads someone to buy their phone instead of a more popular one from the competition. Well, phone sales rely A LOT on good word of mouth. Someone buys a phone and it’s so pleased with it that it tells a friend. And then that friend ends up buying it and tells another. Etc etc. Currently, only bad friends will recommend an Xperia phone to a friend looking for a great camera on Android. An honest friend will simply say “it’s ok, but there are better ones out there”.

I personally am very disappointed with Sony as camera is the thing I value most on a phone actually. Which is why, unless the Z5C does a complete 180º, I’m not buying another Xperia. That will obviously lead me to also not recommending it to any of my friends. And that’s how Sony loses a customer and many other potential customers. No one that leaves a brand behind will ever say “those phones were amazing, I just wanted something less awesome”. No one.

  • RbbrDcky

Well I just hope you understand that life is all about trade-offs and compromises so you are almost undoubtedly going to lose something to gain something else. Good luck.

  • DBS

Indeed. The problem is that with Sony devices, you’re currently losing more than you’re gaining. Which makes them a bad deal.

Oh I would strongly disagree with you there! I upgraded to the Z3v from the S5. And even though the S6 wasn’t available at the time I purchased it, I’m still very satisfied. In fact, the only thing I can think of that I gave up was a removable battery but the things that I gained more than make up for that with the higher water resistance, stereo speakers, wireless charging, and PS4 remote play being the biggest ones for me. What feature(s) am I missing out on that makes this a bad deal?

  • Alvin

I have much concrete evidences that my z3 captures everything better than my mom’s s6 edge in low light and s6 and s6 edge have focusing problems, especially in low light, i have a hard time and made me gave up focusing on s6 edge. But in enough light condition, both have ups and downs

  • Tibor Hornyák

    completly agree!

    I was a Sony (SE) customer ….from GH198!

and now, I own an S6 …and know how fast can be an autofocus, or how incredibe 60fps 1080p video can be made with S6.

sorry Sony…U are the next Nokia

    p.s.: I have bought the z3+ as a last try….

and It’s heating issue is terrible. GARBAGE

  • Alvin

That ugly bezels though…(not the size, but the inconsistency and uneven size)

  • Alvin

Did you mean sony fans? Here’s a right sentence : ” most people waiting s6 edge plus and note5 to be released”

    There you go.. lol kidding:D

If camera is not the strongest suit you want in your smartphone then it is not a bad deal.

  • DBS

Well, first one should point out that the V line is exclusive to ONE US carrier and therefore it’s not a global product that can be bought by the vast vast majority of Sony customers.
You’re right, the Z3V and Z4V actually ARE great phones whose only major major flaw is the lack of OIS and decent camera software.
As I said, camera is the thing I value the most on a phone. And, like me, a lot of people. Actually, all surveys I’ve seen point out to camera and battery life being the two things people value more on their phones. And the Z line hasn’t got a great camera since the Z1. Including the Z3V/Z4V.

Sony’s offers in the markets where they should be concerned keeping – Europe and Japan – are not great. They’re good. Not great. And the problem is that those markets aren’t monopolized by Apple and Samsung. Which means competition is a lot fiercer. In Europe Sony is extremely popular. In fact, from 2009 onwards Sony managed to climb to 3rd biggest smartphone OEM in Europe, being surpassed only by Apple and Samsung, after Nokia considerably dropped from 1st place by going with Windows Phone instead of Android in 2009.
Currently, however, LG is climbing the charts and there are a lot of new brands coming in, both from China like Huawei, but also from Europe like Wiko.
Sony can not afford to lose any more market share. And for that they have to present truly compelling devices that will make consumers not tempted by neither Samsung/Apple’s superior offers or the other brands cheaper offers.
Sony has the unique position of pushing forward with both the PlayStation brand as well as camera tech on phones. They’re doing none of that. Sony’s PlayStation rules Europe but Sony has yet to make a single ad to promote their Xperias and how they integrate with the PS. Heck, they could just bundle a bloody flyer with the PS4 to promote it and every single PS owner would become aware of the phones. They do nothing of a sort.
As for the cameras, all they do is disappointing. And with Nokia’s impending return to the smartphone market this time running Android, Sony will very likely lose the opportunity of carving for itself the position of go-to-brand for the best camera tech on mobile (you must not forget that the Nokia brand is still extremely popular in Europe and they do have the reputation for the best cameras on phones, period.)

  • mohsen

why? you mean RIP blackberry is better than sony?

  • Gitarooman

Blackberry is not even worth mentioning

  • RbbrDcky

I forgot what we were arguing about…

    Z4v launches on September 3

  • Bennder

I mean people who like good phones, not brand/spec-hunters. (eg. I want new phone…don’t know which one but it’s ok as long as it’s Samsung or Iphone) hahaha :D

  • HAWX

True, but you’re missing the most important factor. Price. Will you pay the same money on an midranger as flagships? Nope. Why? Because one has better camera, processor… And Sony phones are more expensive than other competitors on the market. And that’s why they are loosing.
I agree with DBS on this point.

Not sure why you would be excited over the Sony Z4v or even the Z5v Series . If Verizon does the same thing they did to the Z3v your phone will be retired within no time. If they don’t meet the minimum sales projection, your new Sony phone will be done before a years up.

  • mohsen

    because nobody buy it

  • Jordan H

I’m pretty excited about it! But mostly because it’s the only sony phone I can get on Verizon. But I mean it does have a lot of awesome features!

  • Eindru

If you are smart you won’t get Verizon’s. I have a Z3v. It should be criminal that they haven’t updated the device, but have made empty promises since November of 14 for simultaneous voice and Data. No meaningful update since January 20th. Hilariously sad if you expect better support then what they have given, you know in reality.
