Sony CES HallSony will be holding its 2016 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) press conference later on today/tonight depending on which time zone you are in. We are not expecting any major mobile announcements, although new wearable tech is a possibility.

The show kicks off in Las Vegas at 17.00 PST (20.00 EST), which means that for many outside of North/South America , it will be taking place in the middle of the night.

Sony’s press conference will take place at 01.00 GMT in the UK on 6 January and 02.00 CET in mainland Europe. In India, it will be at a bit more civilised time of 06.30 tomorrow morning, whilst in Japan it will take place at 10.00. Wherever you are joining from, the live stream can be accessed below.

  • mUSICA

    lol its test stream..

  • dragonsneeze

    No leaks, no new devices?

  • Svnjay

CES is not about mobile, MWC is.

  • Svnjay

What will be the time in UTC-04:00?

  • dragonsneeze

Not necesserily asking about mobile, haven’t seen anything leak. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

  • Xperia Z4 tablet was announced last CES,am i right?

  • Timel

New action cams are going to be announced. On that front too Sony is on the backfoot. Now everyone is moving towards drones and Sony will again play catch up by realising this.

  • Sony develop their own Dornes… they have vídeos on youtube

  • I hope news on Android 6 schedule

  • Matt

    and i will announce a flag :))

  • Chuck

Wikipedia says it was announced on March 2, 2015. That’s definitely not CES.

  • Tks :)

  • Chuck

10:00pm, if my calculations are correct.

  • I think last year they announced Lollipop upgrades for the Z line at CES. Hopefully this year they talk more about Marshmallow upgrade timing for the Z2 and up. They’ve been quite silent on this since the press release a few months back.

  • I would love to hear more about mobile device availability for the US. Maybe some splashy announcement that the Z5 series will be available here officially with full support for T-Mobile Band 12 VoLTE and WiFi calling with the Android 6.0 upgrade.

A Smartwatch 3 successor would be awesome to see, ideally with proper accessory support (more watchbands!)

  • Svnjay

    Thanks :)

Wish they would say a few words about Z1 series…

  • Nasos Vasileiadis

So anything new announced at CES?

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Live Streams not working… Anybody ??

  • Shimoda

Nope, no Xperia ;/. Loved some products though

  • Brian De Guzman

The post keynote video shows a couple of unannounced product like those cool looking smartwatch.

  • Sameer

    z5 fo us?

  • Sola Hoi

No new phones but a new turntable… how about a new cassette walkman?

  • Lee McRobbie

Yea because a cassette sounds like vinyl…..

  • Lee McRobbie

Would of been nice to get a announcement for 6.0.1 but classic Sony hiding in the shadows on updates as usual. When do you guys think it will be? I was hoping by end of January. I know this is ces but even a big hint on there blog would of been nice.

  • Lee McRobbie

Silent is a understatement lol z3 concept got the maintenance release in December. Was ment to finish at the start of December but they kept it going to new year. It’s now the 6th of January and still no certified update. My friend has the concept and it runs like melted butter and is so good. Shame I upgraded to the plus.

  • aseuss

Think the best news from the Sony presentation was in audio. For once, Sony is getting it right: There IS a trend with people demanding better, premium audio. Sony was right to note that the movement toward vinyl is a sign of us, and they’re smart to introduce a turntable that converts vinyl albums to premium audio, with little loss of sound quality. BUT: Sony is getting it wrong when it comes to introducing stand-alone music players. People listen to their music on PHONES, Sony. Few are that crazy about their music to spend hundreds to carry an EXTRA device around with them. And aside from Xperiablog fans and a few others, no one buys your phones. So, why not put your awesome audio technology in your Xperia phones? Sure, you have hi-res in Xperia Z5, but it doesn’t compare to what you put in your Walkman players. Expensive tech, but just ditch the 4K and put in that Walkman hi-res tech instead and sell the Z5P for the same amount. WALKMAN PHONE.

  • aseuss

How to resurrect Xperia in the US? Put premium hi-res sound from Walkman A26 in an Xperia, throw in a pair of $50 headphones, and market to Gen-X-ers who grew up with the Walkman: create some colorful 80s-style ads reminiscent of MTV music videos, and call it the WALKMAN PHONE.

  • hansip

nothing exciting to be honest. the new TV is just a refresh at the top devices, even the lowly ones doesn’t have any lustworthy upgrade. Lucky me though, since i bought the 2015 edition just almost a year ago.

  • Shakeel Mohammed

They even introduced digital noise cancelation in the z2 series they have a lot of audio technology in their phones I know that their audio isn’t loud as iphones like what the guy said its not loudness its clarity and I can say from the z3+ its dam good from the digital noise cancelation to the clarity of the sound its amazing

  • Yasir Fawad

    New Xperia tablet z

  • Matt

    They did, they said no

  • Matt

Well I do have a Walkman music player that also function as Bluetooth headset in tandem with my xperia, plus it got s master DAC

There is nothing wrong with xperia audio output, it is even the only one that offer active noise cancelling.

Don’t get hung up with Walkman name, if you want one buy one

  • Aiden Pearce

No Xperia damn u sony, y put xperia on poster then.

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

A moment of silence is all we will hear for z1. And I upgraded to z5 last month. Definitely a great upgrade for me. And z1 is my mp3 player and a standby fone.

  • iia3ezu

If there are no Xperia phones being announced at CES, I fail to see what’s the point of mentioning the event on this blog. This is an Xperia blog. Not Sony blog or Bravia blog.

  • laci_csk

    Right. But Xperia is Sony.

  • haxona

My Z3+ might not have the loudest sound but it definitely has some of the clearest sound on any phone I have tested, especially coupled with my NC headphones. They do this already but at times they fail on marketing this. Its like Kaz said that they dont strive to market number 1 in numbers but in quality and for me so far that promise holds true.

  • Timel

I feel for Sony. Kaz Hirai gave a long keynote about what Sony is doing right now and going forward, and the next morning the stock went down 7%. Right now Playstation and imaging division are their only hope of keeping Sony afloat and maybe resurrect to its past glory. They make good products but their sell-through doesn’t reflect that for unknown reasons (read marketing strategy)

  • Timel

This is for enterprise, not consumer electronic.

  • Brian De Guzman

But there’s no way Xperia Blog can predict that there won’t be any Xperia related announcement.

  • aseuss

I do know they’ve got active noise canceling and hi-res on their phones, but they do save the best for their high-end players. As for the Walkman name, I personally don’t care what it’s called but it will attract customers. Which is key, because as you know, Sony Mobile is floundering and they will soon be out of business if they don’t shore up sales. That means no Xperia phones and perhaps no Sony portable music players either.

  • aseuss

The only time they push their products is at CES or IFA, and it was a lame push this time around. In this day and age, you have to promote your stuff because everyone else (read: Samsung, LG, Apple, Lenovo, etc) is aggressively pushing their products. Getting it right in front of the consumer. So most consumers don’t even look for the stuff, they just get what they hear about constantly through ads. Sony can’t go on with this ‘build it and they will come’ approach. BTW, as an Xperia fan you might want to twitter @SonyXperia or @SonyXperiaUS and let them know your thoughts–they’re pretty receptive and curious about what the public wants from a Sony phone.

  • Timel

Have tried all of that. I even email Kaz Hirai for one issue. Never received a reply even though I would’ve appreciated a shortest response. Shuhei Yushida responded to my tweet on PS VR a while ago.
Anyway, I know what the issue with Sony is and how they are trying to iron it out. Whatever they do, they need to be clever about marketing as I had a very hard time telling my brother in US about Sony action cams which I admit are better than GoPro. But since GoPro is all you hear, you dont seem to rely on Sony..that’s the general perception that’s hurting them everywhere.

  • aseuss

I agree with you that Sony fails at marketing. I think the problem with pushing their stand-alone audio devices is that people get the perception that you can only get the Sony audio experience by spending hundreds on a Sony music player, which is not the case. What Sony needs to do is drive home the fact that their Xperia phones do, in fact, have many of the high-end audio features that their stand-alone audio players do. This is key because most customers simply do not want to carry around an extra device. So it’s no use for Sony to keep harping on its expensive music players–just drive home the point that their Xperia phones display superb hi-resolution sound and have built-in noise-canceling. Anyway, if you’d like you might want to twitter @SonyXperia and let them know you like the sound quality–but that they need to shore up marketing. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

  • aseuss

Those are great suggestions. I bet that Sony Mobile would love to hear about this. You might want to twitter @SonyXperia and @SonyXperiaUS and let them know. I’d love to see a SmartWatch 3 successor too–preferably a watch with more style than the SW3 and a heart-rate sensor. So, one that nails both the functionality side and the fashion side. No other mainstream brand has built-in GPS or full-waterproofing (except perhaps the just-announced Casio, but that starts at $500), so a watch that was stylish to boot would be a winner!

  • aseuss

Love XperiaBlog for all the ideas and suggestions for the Xperia line that users dream up. It’s too bad that Sony won’t hear about most of them–unless you tell them. So let me humbly suggest that users twitter @SonyXperia or @SonyXperiaUS and let them know your suggestions. I’ve contact them a few times and they’re very receptive, perhaps mostly because Xperia just doesn’t have the following that iPhone or Galaxy has. They are going through a period of restructuring and don’t know where to carry the brand, and that’s where we customers come in. Let them know your thoughts, they won’t bite!

  • I’ve tried tweeting at their accounts with no response. I wish their social media team was a little more “with it” and engaged with the community at all. Sadly, those accounts are mostly marketing materials (and directed at too many groups IMO) to be impactful.

Seems that there was zero mobile news this year at CES, which is fine. Looks like we’ll be waiting for MWC for any news about a new smartwatch or other phones, assuming any new phones are ready to be announced by then.

  • Kwstakhs

I mean i would like to hear a larger explanation. They said no, but why? My phone is flying even after 2 years of support..why would the support stop since i”ve got that SD 800 on that small dynamite (Z1 compact) it’s such a bad decision…I also think that it’s also fail that they haven’t added timeshift video and i have to root my phone to install it.

  • andik setyawan
  • Matt

Why do company do things they do ever? As much as we (or some of us) loke Sony here, they are a company which is gunning for profit.

And the answer is so that you buy a new xperia flagship. I do think sd 600 device can rum marshmallow perfectly, heck even s4 pro will do a splendid jib on that.

But development cost money and Z1 already had 24 month support black even nexus only supported for 18 months.

  • Matt

I would revenue you to that comment section wright where Sony change the Walkman brand.

Young people who never hold a cassette player do notbknow what walk-man are.

Save. The erst for their music player? Yea ofcourse they do its a music player.

A salad of Sony best features might be possible but it will take another of money and the end product a lot more expensive than what they are now and you tell me who will buy an xperia if say it cost 1200 eur?

Who will give a shit if the phone has s master DAC? If you use the headset Sony gave you? Or other cheap headset.

  • J Cav the Great

This was a boring presentation, all it was just about High Fidelity Audio. And “Super” 4K TVs with HDR

  • Mathias Cronqvist

    >I even email Kaz Hirai for one issue.
    You’re an idiot.

  • Timel

Can’t hear you..human audible frequency is different than what your mouth can produce

  • RealityCheck2015

Cool show but really disappointed that SONY didn’t show off a new 4K Blu-ray player tho :-/ Can’t understand why they are not the 1st to do so to?!?! Oh well.

  • Mathias Cronqvist

Considering the fact that this is text, you just proved my point.

  • Kwstakhs

You’re right…but that’s risky! If someone didn’t like the “update” rules of Sony he might go for sth else next time,so if Sony would update the Z1 and Z1c to 6.0, everything would be perfect for both the consumer and Sony’s reputation… Or at least, that’s the way i would act like if i ruled a company…(After all, Z Ultra (Google Play Edition) gets 6.0 with SD 800!)

  • fluxx

Yeah, it’s about time that MWC starts :D

  • fluxx

A lot of devices are connected to each other. There are no new phones at CES but some stuff you might connect to them. (Speakers, Headphones, …)

  • Timel

    Still can’t hear you.

  • Matt

Now now, only a fraction of people even know xperia runs android, let alone which version.

I do hope Z1 got updated, but all your point there are taken from enthusiast standpoint :s

  • aseuss

Sure, lots of young people have never held a cassette player. But everyone over 30 has, because they grew up in the 80s and 90s. That’s tens of millions just in the US. So they’ll know what a Walkman is. You only need name recognition, and then grow the brand from there.

I don’t think you need the very best of Sony’s audio features. I’m not talking about putting that $1,200 Walkman from last year’s CES in an Xperia. Just put excellent features that are better than what people are used to in their phones. Even the ones that are in current Xperia phones are good enough. Doesn’t matter if it’s the best headset–we’re not talking about audio connoisseurs who will probably buy the stand-alone player anyway. By contrast, the people who don’t want to buy a stand-alone player are going to be fine with a regular headset.

Calling it Walkman is just good marketing–at least for over-30 crowd. And remember, that’s more than half of smartphone buyers. Take home message is, Sony needs to focus on regular people who care about good sound, but are not audiophiles.

  • aseuss

Thanks Greg Macek for tweeting them and sorry that you had trouble (I guess SonyXperia should be saying this!) I do agree that Sony in general has problems reaching out to customers–I remember going to a Sony Style store 5 years ago and the personnel knew next to nothing about the (really cool) stuff they were selling. If you want, you can write them at their New York office–don’t know the address off the top of my head, but they do have a mailing address.

  • Matt

“Just put excellent features that are better than what people are used to in their phones. ”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwkBjjgibXI
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94y1JlZ5rPM

they already did that, what more do you want?

Look, if Walkman such a great marketing device, why sony drop it ?

  • Kwstakhs

    I don’t think so…I think Z1 deserves 6.0 and i also think i proved why

  • Mathias Cronqvist

    Exactly.

  • Matt

Well, you can always use a custom Rom, but official? Not gonna happen

  • Kwstakhs

Unfortunately no…and yes, custom ROMS had always been a solution

  • Kwstakhs

Well everything is a dream, today my phone just broke for a second time falling from almost 0.3 metres or less…I think it’s so freaking easy to break because of it’s big weight…Bye Z1 compact..

  • ccccc( .).)

nowadays, its not about the great features u put in, but how u sell it. SADLY. no matter how great the device u have (xperia line), it will not matter to those of samsung/apple.
