Xperia Marshmallow Concept users don’t want the trial to end

in Android, Firmware

Sony Concept for AndroidSony developers sent out a survey to all of those running the Concept for Android Marshmallow on Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handsets late last year, asking how happy were they with the beta and how long they wanted it to go on for. The results were recently released, which you can see below, and it’s quite clear that the Concept programme has received a positive reception with the majority wanting it to go on for as long as possible.

We have reported previously how well the programme has been received, with a responsive developer team, regular updates and a firmware that is both stable, fast and power efficient. We’re yet to see if/how some of this good work translates into the official Android 6.0 firmware for Xperia devices, but hopefully we don’t have to wait too long to find out.

Concept trial remain

  • That’s good to see: the vast majority of the users indicated that they wanted so stay, so it’s safe to guess from their responses that the Concept is very good! I can hardly wait to get it! :-)

  • Snorky112

just install the rom its avaiable on XDA

  • Himesh Rintu

    Wht abt xperia z

  • Zbaeia

    Sony xperia E6 C6 M6 Marshmallow :)

  • Arch9

Hoping the concept firmware will stay and becomes firmware alternative to user who likes stock android

  • Ambitious Man

    Z5 series and Z3+.

  • Matthias

This doesn’t make any sense to me.

Why do they give the option “as long as I can”? They have just called it “as long as the trial exists”.

It’s a trial, isn’t it? So when the trial is done, the software will go public, right? I mean, what else is a trial phase for?

So why could someone possibly want the trial to continue? Obviously that should mean that the software is NOT very good yet, i.e. not ready for a public release.

Hence, the users think the trial should continue.

Or have I missed some other reason that could explain why this article sounds so positive?

  • It is a trial for the Concept. Isn’t a trial for the Marshmallow that they going to release as “official Marshmallow”

  • Heru

is this legit? so excited if it is…

  • Matthias

Ah ok sorry I always thought the “Concept” was actually a testing phase for the “official Marshmallow”.

So that means that they’re actually developing two different Marshmallow builds for the Xperias… interesting thing. Guess I should read up a bit on the subject before making confused comments here ;D

  • fluxx

Look at Windows 10. Version numbers are version numbers, there can always be an open developer branch. Great move from Sony, I hope they bring a lot of this into the final version for end users.

  • Dion

    Source pls

  • sebastianer

LoL I would pay to have Concept on my Z5 Compact. Come on Sony…..add the Z5s to the concept….

  • Kosacka

    Its tm to upgrd

  • sebastianer

Really good news. Almost all the Z3, that had been using concept firmware are more happy with this firmware than the sony stock firmware.

  • Igor Rage
  • Dion

    thx sir

  • Madis Otenurm

Well, of course, who wouldn’t want to get faster updates and cleaner software :D

  • haxona

I was just taking a shower and thought for myself for a second “where the fuck is my Marshmallow, then I get into Xperiablog and there I find this… lol

  • Gadget Lover

Timel. :D. He wants crap like Touchwiz, Emotion UI and LG’s garbage UI on Sony’s device.

  • Dion

Be careful or he calls u a fanboy :O

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

I just wish they had given the concept rom to Z2 as well.

  • Sadman Khan

“the page you requested was not found” :(

  • theskig

Just remove those huge SIM labels on Dual’s status bar, please. They really suck.

  • theskig

    ahahah

  • Matt
  • Dion

    It’s fake anyways

  • haxona

Haha you never know, at this point it should be in final stages so where there is smoke there is a fire as they say

  • haxona

I want it on my Z3+ I actually see no possible reason for them not opening it to the other devices it really doesnt make sense. Yoy can still keep the userbase small and still add the Z5s and the Z3+

  • The problem is that this “concept” is something confusing since we really don’t know what Sony plans to do with it…
    Don´t worry :)

  • Off topic:

Sony buys Israeli chip manufacturer Altair for $200 million

“Altair employs 190 engineers and software developers at their Israeli headquarters where they develop 4G chips to speed up communications without using excess energy. They work with several communications protocols like LTE, XG-PHS and WiMAX and have customers like Verizon Wireless in the U.S. They recently opened a development center in Taiwan.”

    (…)

“But Sony makes major strategic gains here. A new chip manufacturer inside the Sony structure gives Sony’s devices that very same advantage that Qualcomm and Intel have. Sony long ago sold off its Vaio personal computers, but its Xperia mobile line will benefit immensely from the buyout. That might mean reports of Xperia’s death have been grossly exaggerated. The company’s Playstation brand is also going strong and will soon enter the VR market.

Another advantage to the acquisition is that it gives Sony a foothold in the dynamic Israeli startup ecosystem, the world’s most prolific outside of Silicon Valley.”

As someone on US Tmobile with a Xperia Z3 I say this. Sony I love your phones, I absolutely hate Tmobile though as they decided to pull support after 5 months from initial sale of the device, this left us with 2 updates — 1 to 5.0.1 and stagefreight to 5.0.2 where we have been since last May.

  • sebastianer

the Z5 firmware (Lollipop) is terrible. Auto Brightness gamma doesn’t work. The camera captures better details at 2MP than at 8MP. And better details at 8MP than 23MP. 23MP is useless. 8MP > 2MP for 100% size photos. 2MP > 8MP for thumbnails.

We need a concept build (or they need a better quality assesment team) asap!
So I think that marshmallow will be still bugged in the Z5 family.

  • haxona

How is that relevant to the article?

  • Jaissal S

Awesome! My Z5 will be tasting some Marshmallow soon! I’m personally not a fan of actual marshmallow :P.

  • Katie Pollard

    “LG’s garbage UI”
So much truth in this statement. I just switched from the horrid LG G4 to the Xperia Z5 (E6653). LG’s UI is absolute trash. They totally killed the functionality of the notification shade. They added so much unnecessary bloat to the UI. I just don’t get why anyone complains about Sony’s UI. It’s nearly stock, with useful features added. I love it.

Here I am rocking 5.1.1 on my original Z and Z1. I feel for you Americans.

Split view and private mode will be awesome to have in xperia as stock system. The current gallery only had hide option but can easily excess by anyone even in guess mode.

  • subm

Sony should work on the boot time and make the UI even smoother

  • Hyung-Woo Jung

Strange. I haven’t had such problem with the Lollipop build on my Z5 Compact, but yeah, this isn’t related to the article.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Exactly my thoughts about the Sony UI, I guess people who complain on Sonys excellent UI have only been using Sonys UI xD

  • rubin km

Guess marshmallow hit the device by April that’s Sony’s style always late……………..

  • Matt

agreed, they put everything under the sun on the notification center, or should i say toggle center . its so full and cluttered.

sony on the other hand not bland compared to stock but retain the clean looks of the stock and adding a couple useful functionality.

  • cicababa

Of course they don’t want it. Otherwise they should wait for official Marshmallow till next Xmas.

  • fluxx

… and always stable. I bought my Z2 with Android 4.4 and updated to 5.0 and later to 5.1. Not a single (!) reboot or freeze in 1.5 years and I never did a factory reset. If that’s the price to wait a month longer, I gladly take it.

  • Timel

Xperia UI is lack of smooth animation , it feels unsmooth when compare to the current TouchWiz UX and iOS9

And stock android is very ugly, most people dont like it… Sony can’t create the uniqueness to Xperia UI, it shows that Sony run out of idea.

  • Akand

Sony should buy Assistant (by api.ai found on playstore) and integrate with the core. This app is awesome to me.

  • Timel

Maybe Sony is planning to creat their own chipset

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

first time i read Japanese buy Israeli company. i thought Israeli company love to buy company to expand their business.

Damn I didn’t realize they never went past 5.0.2 lol thats crazy. Guess you will have to flash the new firmware’s eventually. Don’t you pay full price for phones on carriers now? Should have bought an unlocked one. I’m on ATT and my unlocked one works great

  • bladenr1

We other people want it to end so we can enjoy it to. We want marshmallow to let it go guys give us the mallow now.

Totally Agree that the LG UI is ugly but i like the LG Camera UI, it is very great and powerful

  • Invar

But… it’s still ugly TouchWiz with many colors – just like in cartoon… Do you really thinks that NORMAL person will like it? Only stupid and without brain – Samsung fanboy.

  • Dion

Go swallow a dick then maybe you’ll be quiet if you like samsung’s or huawei’s UI then what are u doing here sony’s ui is definitely not your taste so don’t bullshit us with your useless opinion, you don’t like it well the only person who can change this is you by buying a new phone simple as that and don’t call ppl sony fanboys pls you have a problem that people like a specific kind of phone? Fcking attention seeking whore thats what u are go on the street and show your ass there u will get more than attention

  • Timel

    You mad?

    What’s wrong with you?

There’re some Sony fans in the thread have said about me that I like Samsung and Huawei’re UIs so I show you why TouchWiz is better than Xperia UI and right now

The truth is in front of you, You’ll clearly see that Xperia UI is lack of smooth animation when compare to iOS9
    / TouchWiz UX

Android 6.0 has features that allows developers to make the UI can render smoother than ever but Sony just don’t understand the software… Xperia UI still feels very laggy when compare to iOS9 and TouchWiz UX

Xperia UI is the proof that Sony just run out of idea and don’t understand software, Sony has no idea to make the great software to against with the big players like Apple and Samsung.

Sony can be only a hardware maker, Sony can make beautiful hardwares but Sony don’t know how to make beautiful software, Sony’s Xperia UI is very tasteless, un-unique and just a copy of Ugly stock UI which is ugly, and Sony make it worse, for example Sony adopt material design to its Music app and then it turns very ugly after that…

When Sony lose its way, when Xperia doesn’t mean Sony experience anymore… Xperia now is just a copy of Google experience, while Sony can be just a hardware maker. Why you think that Sony will be able to compete with companies like Apple and Samsung???

  • Timel

Xperia UI is very cartoon too and it looks really cheap and laggy, Xperia UI is just a stupid clone of stock android.

  • ramuk

@disqus_fyyTteBov6:disqus, dude everyone knows that he is a attention seeking whore, I mean look at him he always likes his own comment, LOL. You shouldn’t waste your time with this jackass .Here is a better idea, Whenever you see that attention seeking whore posting something here just ignore and hit the flag button. That should take care of everything. Attention seeking whore wouldn’t get any attention if his comment get moderated. Problem solved.

Best policy – Just ignore and hit flag button.

  • HAWX

It is actually the testing phase. All these dumb heads think it is done for joke? Sony can’t make any profit spend their money to questionable concept after cutting lors of jobs? Even Samsung and Apple don’t do it. You were right at the beginning. This site is full of biased fans.

  • Timel

Flag me can’t change the fact that you mad me so bad lol

Mad enough to keep watching me and flag My comments hahahaha

You’re very psycare the fact and you can’t even accept them because you hurt hahaha

No one stupid enough to keep watching and flag other people’s comment like you’ve always done ramuk, what dirty loser hehe

It’s nearly stock but it still modded. They should do something like Motorola and put more effort in fast updates. Fast updates doesn’t mean “buggy firmware”, just mean, more investment, they should be able to do that having a “nearly stock” UI and with the current Z phones prices. (Z phones are expensive, they are not economic like Motorolas, which already have Marshmallow and support better the standard android apis).

Of course, Motorola is not lighting fast updating (after Lenovo took the company). But it still updating old 2014 mid-range phones faster than Sony with the latest flagships.

  • sebastianer

It’s incredible that the Z5 phones (a few months later from the release date) still have broken “Auto Brightness”. Sony said that they are fixing the gamma issues with “android stock auto brightness” in Marshmallow OTA…

    How long will it take?.

While Samsung trying to create and optimise its software as smooth as possible to against with Apple’s iOS9, Samsung is really active and always keep moving forward that’s why Samsung can be the most successful android manufacturers today

You’ll heard the news that Samsung team up with Google for the next version of TouchWiz UX, they try to take TouchWiz UX to another level, they want to make TouchWiz more faster and fluent than iOS, which is very important for user experience.

I have learned my lesson, but the issue is that T-Mobile is locking band 12 their phones. I can of course enable it through root or whatnot, but they are just a bunch of douche canoes.

  • Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact phones are in the final stage of the 6.0 Marshmallow development and are now just waiting to receive the official software update.

  • Iucidium

I already suggested that to them, or to implement a ‘nexus mode’

  • Iucidium

    Different hardware. It’s been asked.

    Lies.

    Camera api2 might be added.
