Sony teases MWC 2016 event

in Videos, Xperia X series

Sony MWC teaserSony Mobile has teased its MWC 2016 press conference in the cryptic video below. The video walks through a number puzzle you may already be familiar with, asking you to choose a number between 1 and 10 and then perform a series of calculation that will always get you to 22 i.e. the 22 February, the date of Sony’s press conference. However, the with the last calculation asking you to subtract the number you started with, it kind of defeats the purpose! Anyway, we’ll bring you all the news on Sony’s new goodies next Monday morning.

Thanks Cezary and Sasa!

  • Arch9

What can we expect on Sony Mwc? A new phone?

  • Kunal Shukla

    Snapdragon 820 powered device maybe.

  • harish g

  • Thoughts_Of_A_Simple_Fellow

i predict a new device minus the fingerprint sensor

  • M110

“with the last calculation asking you to subtract the number you started with”

probably means get rid of whatever is in your mind about the event

  • Anukul

  • Stanly

  • Svnjay

  • Timel

I still worry about its camera

  • Matt

no, must? id otn want 5.5 inch screen its too big for me, i wanted the screen to be exactly the same

  • Bashar Shehab

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

2K display? Please no! I want 4K display like Z5 Premium

  • Paul M

  • Paul M

    Z6 ultra – 6.5″
    Z6 – 5.5″
    Z6 compact – 4.5″
Z6 nano – 1.5″, otherwise known as the Smartwatch 4G

  • disqus_X2zWxzFnwo

I think Sony would present the Xperia C6 not the Z6 family

  • apolloa

All I want is the Z6 / 7 Compact, just give me a Snap Dragon 820 SOC, 3GB Ram, 32GB storage with SD card slot, waterproof, wireless charging, USB C, 1080P screen, finger printer reader power button, improved lens on the camera, Marshmallow, stereo speakers. And possibly a new design.

Sadly I have a feeling we will not see anything about the next Xperia Z series at MWC….. :(

  • Hieu Nguyen

I love that narator’s voice. I hope he narates the Z6 introduction video :3

  • Vinny Conforto

I just wanna see something NEW

  • Patrik

4k? Are you using microscope when you looking at the screen? Unnecessary battery drainer… They should focus primarily on camera… Those 23mpix are marketing Sensor and optics is what matter most…

  • Ben Leung

Qualcomm Technologies will also demonstrate 4×4 LTE MIMO in a smartphone prototype test-developed by Sony Mobile Communications, based on the Snapdragon 820 processor with X12 LTE.

  • Chuck

Some said the Z6 won’t be announced on this event, I hope that’s not true. As for the Z6 itself, I’d like better battery life than Z3+ and Z5 and a better camera. An IR blaster and return of pencil stylus mode would also be nice, but that’s probably not going to happen. Also, I’d like if Sony sticked to the regular microUSB port instead of going Type-C, because getting new cables and accessories is always annoying and especially when you can barely find them on the market.

  • Chaz

    *we dont need bigger screen
*qualcomm chip is nothing refreshing, maybe xperia can try something else
    *faster update

  • imparanoic

    Z6 my wishlist

    4gb ram
    snapdragon 820
    5.2″ screen
dedicated DAC audio ( audiophile quality)
    digital noise cancellation
    ps4 dual shock support
    1080p is fine for me
non lag mhl or micro hdmi ( wireless stream is a bit laggy, crap for games)

  • smartuser8

    Z6 will have the S820, so wait…
    Z5 have S810, so WAIIIT!!!

  • Thitigorn Jiruttigorn

    Probably smartwatch

  • Ambitious Man

Xperia E6 and C6 are coming. I quite sure. ;)

  • En.Pasta.Tack

How can the result be 22 every time? I don’t understand??

  • Sadman Khan

  • Brick

If you add a custom number and then you subtract it later what’s even the point of having a custom number in the first place?

  • Matt

you all know what make the next xperia disappointing ? unrealistic expectation

  • Vuyo Ncube

(Repeated and revised from several posts ago)

    Wishlist time

    Z6 Ultra

Same frosted glass back (acceptable) or full aluminium alloy frame

5.8 inch 1440p JDI 2nd gen Pixel Eyes, IPS-NEO LCD with local dimming backlighting (1000 zones would be dope) that can process HDR content like all the new HDR TVs unveiled at CES

    Louder stereo speakers

    Stronger audio output

USB Type C port (version 3.1 not 2.0) with QuickCharge 3.0 (manually adjustable to preserve battery health) with superMHL compatibility

Sense ID fingerprint scanner in power button

Custom 1/2″ 16MP f1.8 16:9 rear facing camera with PDAF, deep trench pixel isolation like ISOcell and OIS, capable of hybrid stabilised 1080p/60fps, 1440p/60fps and 2160p/30fps

Enlarged 5MP f1.8 front facing camera with colour-adjustable screen flash function

    More microphones

RAW support and deeper manual camera controls

3500mAh battery or whatever brings 3 day battery life of light to average usage without using Stamina Mode

Snapdragon 820 with at least 64GB ROM/4GB RAM

UFS 2.0 or NVMe storage with microSD card slot if possible as storage speed is the hot new performance bottleneck to tackle

Ultra Stamina Mode changes display to grayscale and allows music playback

A Samsung-like Download Booster (“HybriData”?)that can work under different conditions: not needing LTE to operate and can combine slow WiFi and slow mobile connection (appreciated in developing nations)

Small apps can covert into full Multi-Window apps if Marshmallow allows it

Broader audio and video codec support out of the box

Similar ergonomic design to the E4 with slimmer bezels

    Splash resistance

4.7 inch 720p JDI IPS NEO display

Single front facing speaker that beats the old E1’s

    Cheap fingerprint scanner somewhere

8MP rear facing camera taken from iPhone 6 to assert sensor market dominance

    f1.8 5MP front facing camera

2700mAh removable battery or whatever brings 2.5 day battery life of light to average usage without using Stamina Mode

Snapdragon 625 with 16GB ROM/2GB RAM (don’t trust Mediatek’s current offerings for battery life concerns)

Same UI and camera software features as mentioned in previous list

    Smartband Talk 2

Fully fledged fitness tracking (heart rate etc.)

    1 week battery life

    SmartWatch 4

Snapdragon Wear 2100 with 512 MB RAM

    Memory-in-Pixel display

Square shaped for simpler, larger battery

Modular VR headset which accepts recent Z phones and has PSVR compatibility

  • Battel

Don’t expect much, this company is on low profile .

  • Pingback: Sony ????????? teaser ??????????????????? MWC 2016()

  • SONY only

    Waiting for xperia z6 tablet

  • iia3ezu

    The real winner is Mediatek.

  • iia3ezu

Keep wishing but you won’t see the Z6 at MWC.

  • iia3ezu

Sony will probably not be so stupid and cannibalize the sales of the Z5 (normal and premium) by launching the Z6 so early.

Then again, it’s probably just as stupid to let LG and HTC and Samsung have a half year headstart on their 2016 flagship phones. And good luck trying to steal media attention away from Apple, Samsung and Nexus in Q3 or Q4 of 2016.

  • iia3ezu

It’s not the hardware, it’s the software. When your ‘Superior Auto’ mode is anything but superior, there’s a big problem.

  • iia3ezu

No Snapdragons on budget Xperia C/E phones. Mediatek chips for cost reduction.

  • ShinOrochiX

Yeah it would be good to see a proper successor (no media tek bs) for the SP, unfortunately due to buggy software and poor support (they played us) the SP was my last Xperia after years of loyalty.

Though I would love to be back with Sony. But for now there is nothing that can beat my OnePlus X in terms of hardware, software, design and price.

Edit: 22nd is my birthday! :-)

  • apolloa

Sony have always run on a 6 month release schedule, and MWC is just over 6 months since they announced the entire Z5 range. So it is perfectly feasible for them to launch the entire Z6 range. I only say they won’t as we have not had any leaks, then any we have not had any Sony leaks at all so who knows what they will announce?
And Sony ALWAYS get just as much media attention as everyone else.

  • hansip

Marshmallow update rollout will be enough Sony.. Will be enough…

  • Micheal Archer

It was also within the last 18 months that Sony explicitly stated that they were moving to a one-year release cycle. Any evidence to the contrary over the last year can be shut down with one of two (or both) arguments: 1. The Xperia Z3+/Z4 wasn’t exactly a flagship device (Z3 released H2 2014, Z5 released H2 2015); 2. Even if you want to call the Z3+/Z4 a flagship device, it would have been in the pipeline for development well before the “one-year release cycle” commitment, so it and the Z5 had to be released or the investment would have been a loss.

As for the concern that Sony will be 6 months behind other major players…they will also be 6 months ahead of them. It will all depend on what they pack into the new flagships. If they add the right cutting edge features, they will be ahead. But if they add the wrong ones, they will basically be doing consumer research for their competitors, probably with enough time for them to remove features that flop before their own production begins. And if their specs match those of the competition, then clearly they will be 6 months behind and there would be limited incentive to buy (I personally still think that Sony phones are the best looking on the market…but that’s not strictly worth waiting 6 months for).

  • Matt

    i want a new xperia tablet :)

  • Sadman Khan

Last time I checked, the Walkman had the leather back.

  • William Tavares

    Walkman =/= Z series.

  • Sharp Edge

Aluminium frame? Are you stupid or just haven’t heard about the bending problem with the Z5 and Z5P? It’s terrifying! We need a god damn steel or titanium frame. People thought the bending problem was bad with the iPhone but it’s absolutely disgraceful with the newest Z series.

  • Sadman Khan

Exactly. So no leather on Z series

  • kaostheory

    Still waiting for the Z4

  • kaostheory

Interesting that CAT seems to be the only phone this year with a killer new feature. The S60 has built-in thermal imaging. Also waterproof and tough.

  • Vuyo Ncube

Have you not seen bend test videos of the old Z3? The old thing was made of stone! I think Sony was not interested in reinforcing the Z5 series with Magnesium or extra aluminium just to save money and time.

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

Not at all. I liked Light effects, 4G net.
Also i will give to my mom when i bought Xperia Z6.

  • Khillo81

Yeah, I read about that today! Pity it’s still a long way coming to the market. And is too expensive for me. Am eyeing the Z5 compact. Price has become just right…

  • azzido

Exactly, less MPx please, better and BIGGER sensor, optics, lower F/ value like F 1.7 instead of F2.0, bigger pixels please and manual CONTROL

  • azzido

I agree about Ultra but it should have 6″ screen and battery should be over 4000mAh. Even Z5 Premium has 3600mAh so more than you are mentioning, it has only 5.5″ screen, but it lasts 1 day or 1 day and few hours only…

  • Harut Hajin

Use smartphone with FULL HD DISPLAY everyday and You will see pixels, Iam using Z5 Premium and after using it everyday I noticed pixels, WE ARE NOT ANIMALS

  • dragonsneeze

I guess there’s something about the experience that keeps you with sony. Thanks for the reply.

  • Akand

This isn’t Z6 for sure. Maybe something wearable or smartwatch.
But Qualcomm said they’ve develped a device powered by SD820 and their latest LTE modem which will be showcased at MWC. That’s the real confusion. It it’s not Z6, then is Tablet Z6?

  • sebastianer

    2K? 4K? It it’s not a 7″ tablet! Nor a 12″ one…..
    Even 1080p is exceeded.

  • Vuyo Ncube

The Z5 Premium holds 3430mAh. 1 day and a bit is still pretty commendable battery life considering the UHD display and toasty SD810. Moving up to SD820 and down to either QHD or FHD would automatically make it a beast. 4000 mAh would obviously be awesome too.

  • MrJigolo

Oh boy this is too easy for me.

    Z6/2016 flagship wishlist:

    138.6 x 71 x 7.0 mm
5.2″ 1080p RGB OLED Display (use the one from Playstation VR if you have to) with DCI-P3 color gamut and properly calibrated
    Speakers location same as Z5
    Fingerprint sensor on the back
    USC C 3.1 with Quick Charge 3.0
Good 16mp camera and good 5mp front with manual controls
    NVMe 32/64/128
    Snapdragon 820 4GB RAM
    2900 mAH battery
Xperia Concept software as the Standard going forward

  • Edward Lopez Cobo

Maybe android marshmallow leather version release for everyone lol

  • Svnjay

    El Psy Kongroo :)

I still don’t buy it that they have moved to a 1 year cycle yet, and I would class the other phones as 6 month release cycles, but we will find out soon.
I will wait 6 months for a Sony phone though, the Compact, still no one makes a device like it. The new S7 is the closest at 5.1″ but even then it’s still 0.5″ bigger in screen size.
As for the specs etc, well I feel they will be a bit old in 6 months time but who knows what else they will put in it?

  • Patrik

so its more important to you than battery life? Because for me 1080p display with excellent color reproduction, outdoor visibility, long lasting battery life etc… is more than resolution. which btw is another marketing crap…

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Evan Blass did “leak” it, hopefully a round version of the SW3, with a better screen and heart rate sensor

  • Madis Otenurm

Because in everyday use the OS is downscaled to 1080p anyway. Unless you watch photos and videos with built-in apps…

  • Madis Otenurm

Seems like the comments section is becoming a Z6 wishlist :P

    Fair enough:
    * Concept ROM for all, at least optionally
    * Improved fingerprint scanner
    * SD820
    * 5,2″-5,4″ FHD or QHD, AMOLED could be cool too
    * C5-style (bezelless) screen
    * 4 GB RAM
    * 3000+ mAh
    * QuickCharge 3.0
    * Gorilla Glass 4
    * USB-C
    * Metal back (for durability)

  • Arch9

Wut? imo it will looks really good if this true, see this one for example

  • Any rumors about a Z6 compact?

  • nick
  • azzido

UHD display that works ocassionally haha, id album app, used 1% a day…

  • Kunal Shukla

    a 820 powered device it is :)
