Privilege Plus update adds VR Theater; Could we see Sony launch an Xperia VR headset too?

Xperia VR TheaterVirtual Reality is really expected to kick off this year and Sony has invested huge sums into the concept, with PlayStation VR due to launch in 2016. Sony also has patents to create what can only be described as a Gear VR competitor and there is a possibility it could launch the ‘Xperia VR’ at MWC next week.

It may just be a coincidence, but Sony Mobile has also today updated its Privilege Plus application to include a VR Theater. The Privilege Plus app is not compatible with Google Cardboard as far as we are aware, at least not yet, which could give further credence that Sony is planning to launch its own VR headset.

The new Privilege Plus has the movie “The Walk” in VR and allows you to view it through a headset or have a 360 degree experience. We’ll obviously bring you all of the news from MWC next week.

Sony says that the VR experience is not compatible with Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia C3, Xperia E1, Xperia C3, Xperia L, Xperia M, Xperia ZR, Xperia Z, Xperia E4G, Xperia M4 Aqua, Xperia C4, Xperia C5 Ultra, and Xperia M5.

  • It´s possible, since in their blog they have:

“We also believe Xperia Z5 Premium is capable of offering the clearest, sharpest Virtual Reality platform – we’re working on a few things here internally, so stay tuned for more news soon.”

    Also PlayStation VR

  • in the article » “Virtual Reality is really expected to kick off this year and Sony has invested huge sums into the concept, with PlayStation VR due to launch in 2016.”

  • Uzair Syed

Don’t see the point. Just go full speed ahead with PS VR.

  • Alvin

They wrote the news in their blog, they updated privilege plus to support vr and add vr trailers, MWC 2016 is 1-2 days away, they’ll have an event there, PS VR is coming soon…

So that means either PS VR will support Xperias and it’s features, Sony Mobile will announce their both VR headset, or both

Because you need to create an experience for two separate segments, smartphone users and console gamers.

  • jag

And I thought I can use google cardboard with the VR movies I saw in the Privilege Movies App so I bought one yesterday. Argh!

Soooo this might mean that upcoming Xperias could step up to OLED given its superior response time. PSVR and TV and PC streaming would make it epic!

  • Alvin

and playstation vr will cost as much as the average of sony phones prices.

What kind of ugly-ass app is that!!!

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

I find funny they stating Xperia L, M and some others aren’t compatible with the VR Theater (a subsection of the Privilege Plus app) since not even the main Privilege Plus app is available on those devices…

  • jag

Yup, it is compatible with cardboard. I just tried and tested it. The Insidious is quite horrifying at the last part. I just don’t like those white things appearing one by one.
