Confirmed: USA Xperia XZ and X Compact owners can re-enable the fingerprint sensor

by XB on 5th October 2016

in Xperia X series

xperia-xz-fingerprint-usa_4We recently reported on our belief that the USA Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact devices lack of fingerprint sensor was a software limitation only. Well, we can now confirm this to be the case following word from a number of readers. There are some pictures to prove the point below along with a thread from XDA.

It is a simple process, just follow our guide here and flash your handset to a different region. Once you do, you will be able to re-enable the fingerprint sensor. So if any US owners have been put off by no fingerprint sensor, there is an easy fix.

The US Xperia XZ does not have a fingerprint sensor enabled, but this is a software limitation only

Out of the box, the US Xperia XZ has firmware customisation number 1304-9026

Once flashed with UK firmware, the US Xperia XZ has firmware customisation number 1305-2216…

… this enables the fingerprint sensor on the US Xperia XZ

Thanks Miguel!

  • i am going to laugh alot right now because of how ridiculous this is

  • JL

    Sony. Make.Believe.

  • seven2k

I really want to get this phone. Can we start a petition or something? Did sony give a reason as to why the fingerprint scanner is disabled?

  • paul_cus

Meh, already got the Compact from Clove. It was cheaper and had the fingerprint sensor enabled out of the box.

  • Manu

Afaik there is no official statement, but it seems to involve legal issues…

  • There’s a “power button that doubles up as a fingerprint scanner” patent in the US and it doesn’t belong to Sony. I’ve seen the link somewhere but I can’t seem to find it now.

  • webuser.my

    https://www.google.com/patents/US20120019356

    Would this be it?

So vague.. so stupid to be able to patent something so vague..

They should have expiry on patents.. if you’re not going to be using it within X amount of years, it expires.

  • webuser.my

Laugh at the flawed patent system the US has.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Precisely, the patent system is to blame for Sonys choice of inactivating the fingerprint sensor :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

But without warranty in the US so be careful with it! :)

  • MurF-A-Zoid

Funk yeah, Sony XZ it is..

  • Geese Howard

Well at least there is a way to make an actual US Xperia XZ & Compact get back the finger sensor. So if your thumb of finger is itching for the ‘feel’ there you go :) And to hell with that patent, I would say Sony is putting this way to use much better than that.

  • ZoubIWah

all patents expire but the times are crazy long.

  • p3600

By flashing other firmware also makes you lose warranty

  • Matt

if you want to get he phone, get it and enable it.

if not then buy literally anything else. how hard could it be ?

  • lolop

No it doesn’t. Only if you unlock bootloader.

  • bamsbamx

But, wouldnt flash other region firmwares mess up the communication due to different band frequency???

  • Hotzigetty

    This doesn’t make sense.

    A) – this is still a US Patent Application undergoing examincation and the current claims would affect EVERYONE using a fingerprint scanner that can wake up the phone (including huawei/honor, apple, samsung, HTC, etc)
    B) This “patent family” has “issued” AKA is a “PATENT” in the UK – SONY phones in teh UK dont have the fingerprint scanner disabled.

  • Taquidi

Warranty isn’t void if you flash official firmware. Also, in US even rooting doesn’t void warranty, as you may read in the article below:
    http://motherboard.vice.com/read/jailbreaking-iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty

  • Emil Oskarsson

Not if it’s an official ftf file from Sony :)

I’m no lawyer. But I suppose it’s due to the way the patent was phrased “power button that doubles up as a fingerprint scanner”. Which doesn’t affect Samsung and Apple as they have a separate dedicated “power button”. While Sony’s decision to have their fingerprint scanner doubles as a button which you use to “power on” the device is affected.

So would you have to remember to flash it back to US firmware before sending in for service? Or does it not matter since it isn’t unlocking it and it’s still US hardware?

  • Wolf0491

    No

  • smartuser8

Bands are not IN the firmware. See factory images for the Nexus, there is one for all models (US & international)

  • paul_cus

    Yes, most definitely.

  • seven2k

My belief is if i pay good $$$ im not going to tinker with it. Ill to see if SOny strikes a deal.

Also i dont like voiding warranties. I got a z3 and it was the best Android phone i owned. I had so much phone with it.

  • Paramesh Devineni

I got mine on amazon yesterday. Amazon is giving out $50 credit on XZ’s.

  • Matt

theoretically speaking yes, you paid a good money for it. but int he real world if you life in america , you cannot have fingerprint scanner even if you wine out loud.

and no flashing official software from another region does not void warranty

  • Bezels for the win !

If I where SONY , I definitely wouldn’t pay for something that is ridiculous as that stupid patent LOL , would rather say fuck US market and it’s patents.

  • Bezels for the win !

you can buy international version with fingerprint enabled and NO , flashing a different firmware doesn’t void warranty .

  • Junior Rider

Maybe it would cost Sony a lot if they’re to buy that patent from the owner.

  • webuser.my

You know.. I wonder.. if Sony implemented a ‘software’ fix disabling the power button as one, and having the “shutter” button as a power button… if that will be enough to bypass the patent?

  • Azurpha

Ah yes John Oliver Covered USA patent abuse.

  • Arcest

Yeah, because thankfully they didn´t remove it physically. Oh, that´s sarcasm, sorry!

they can also plain refuse to license it to sony, which is most likely.

  • Federico Levermann

Does anybody know if this method works with the xperia x??
