Sony to add VoLTE support to Xperia X Concept shortly

in Xperia X series

xperia-x-concept-volteSony Mobile is working with operators to add VoLTE (voice over LTE) support for the Android Nougat Concept firmware for the Xperia X. The benefit of VoLTE is that calls should connect faster and have better sound quality too, there is no need to switch to a 2G/3G frequency to make a call.

However, it is somewhat difficult to implement the technology as it requires both phone and network support. This means that Sony will need to add support on an operator by operator basis. The next Concept update will include VoLTE support for three of the largest German mobile carriers including Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica/02.

Sony will then look to add UK and Spain after this. You may be interested to hear, that the three largest markets for the Concept release is Germany, UK and Scandinavia. This is perhaps the reason to focus on the German and UK markets for VoLTE first. We will keep you updated once the new VoLTE firmware starts to roll.

This is great, if it works out positive for the first few maybe it will be possible to have VoLTE on t mobile and AT&T in the future. Possibly Wi-Fi calling too….But here’s hoping

I swear to fucking God, Sony. You could stale at the currently still poor camera performance of the flagship Xperia all you want but as long as you put huge advertising money on Xperia along with PlayStation and some other marketing tricks in the US, baby Jesus will bless you with millions in sales. I swear God dammit.

The Xperia X Performance (and prob X too) is ALREADY capable of VoLTE & Wi-Fi Calling with AT&T. But T-Mobile requires CERTIFICATION first to enable these on their network, and that costs money and there’s a process. Sony Mobile decided it wasn’t important enough to do for their U.S. customers, so my X Perf on my T-Mobile network has these features but I CAN’T use them. Just like how they didn’t wanna pay the licensing for the U.S. version of the X Perf & X fingerprint sensor to work. They’re so cheap it makes me sick. HTC however DID pay for this to be done on their U.S. unlocked phones, cuz they ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT & RESPECT their U.S. customers. So I may be switching to them next year if the HTC 11 is as great as they say it might be.

There’s no mention of Sony Mobile certifying this for T-Mobile. They’re focusing on other countries. Of course that COULD change, but given their statements not too long ago about “scaling back in certain countries, including the U.S.”, I doubt they will. They are all stupid, cheap, lazy, chicken sh*ts and I’ve grown very tired of defending them. Grow some BALLS Sony Mobile………they could be KINGS here, but instead they operate like scared baby animals. They should be CAPITALIZING on Samsung’s troubles right now the way LG is with the V20, but instead, they’re doing little to improve their standing here. Yeah, I’m glad Nougat 7.0 is coming out to the U.S. Xperia X Perf and XZ owners first, but how about making a phone with GREAT battery like you USED to with the Z series? How about releasing the phones on time ALL THE TIME? How about marketing? How about letting the fingerprint sensor be enabled on the U.S. models? You’re not some no-name company…….you’re SONY MOBILE! So MAN UP already!! lol

Google pixel, htc a9 and even the huawei honor 8 and Zte axon have VoLTE on T-Mobile out of the box. Got tired of waiting for an xperia to have full T-Mobile support since my old Z3 gave out. Sony has no idea what they are doing in the US.

  • Geno

Thank you for that info, I didn’t know about AT&T having those features as my X Performance is on t mobile.

  • RockStar2005

    YW! And no problem!

Yeah I love T-Mobile, but making the phone manufacturers have to certify that stuff is lame, esp since AT&T doesn’t do that. Oh well. lol
