Sony could launch an OLED Xperia smartphone in 2018

in News

Sony recently announced their first OLED television, with the fabulously designed A1 series. The use of OLED technology may also be extended to Xperia smartphones according to a report from Nikkan.co.jp.

The report suggests that Sony will launch a premium Xperia smartphone using an OLED display next year. This new display will be adopted in Sony’s flagship device, rather than the whole range according to the report.

Up until now Sony Mobile has only used LCD displays for its smartphones but OLED display’s have their advanatges including pure blacks and high levels of contrast. Would you like to see Sony launch an Xperia smartphone with an OLED display? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

  • raju

    Old good then okay

  • Khush

I would welcome it. It would be a substantial upgrade, xperia’s recently have only show small incremental upgrades for their flagship devices.
I currently have the z5 which is spec wise exactly the same as the z3+, hugely disappointing, so a change into screen technology would be awesome.
The only issue here is, is that it isn’t really a USP. It is a tried, tested and already on the market technology, nothing new, just new to xperias

  • NonSugar♡

Hopefully it uses the RGB strip instead of Pentile arrangement…

  • Arthur Duyvenbode, van

I would prefer an excellent camera performance and battery improvements.

  • Alvin

If it has near-BRAVIA display quality, then yes..

  • Aldi Wan Kenobi

They better include the 4K HDR resolution, X1-Xtreme processor and Triluminos display as well! ;-)

  • Terence Wu

I’d like that change. Unlucky am I that I experienced yellow spot show up on Z2, Z3, Z5 and X’s LCD screen (not all these gadgets are mine but my friends’) (probably) due to heating and bad heat dissipation in that area. I search on the Internet and found that I’m not alone – this problem happens to LCD screens. Though, SONY’s LCD phone screens are always brilliant but maybe in this case, LED screen is better.

  • Rene Pedroso

FYI Xperia Blog, this is not the first Sony OLED. In fact Sony made the first ever OLED TV back in 2007 (11” TV for $2,500). The model was XEL-1. See the links below for reviews

    http://www.oled-info.com/sony-xel-1

    https://www.cnet.com/products/sony-xel-1-oled-tv/review/

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

I have two whitish burnt mark type of patches on my Z3’s screen.
OLED is great since it will help with battery life. It’s the right direction.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Yes finally I think it’s great to see OLED panels being used, They will help with battery life, great colours, etc..

  • xtess3ractx

OLED would help with the battery consumption considerably

  • xtess3ractx

To bad Sony sold most of its patents regarding OLED

  • ramuk

They will probably release the flagship Oled phone on October 2018.

  • (NinJer)

I’d rather have better colour reproduction than better blacks, no chance of screen burn in, and being able to see in sunlight.
However i do like the always on screen features, can’t have both ey.

  • (NinJer)

Only if you start using black wallpapers and stuff, i’d rather have a vibrant colour display than better blacks, its a phone mostly in your pocket screen is already off, not a tv.

  • Brandon LeGendre

Any news on nougat for z5?

  • Thanh

    That’s right!

  • Craig

Sony has never been one to field in the cheap economic class. So why should they b scared to launch a flagship with the most advanced and expensive technologies. Sony should go ahead with the OLED display and add soft and hard tech internally. A collaboration with Erikson to kill of Samsung and key word b the cherry on the cake

  • Dan Ghete

Yes , I would like to see OLED display on Sony smartphones

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

Yes. Please Sony, stay away of that Pentile crap…

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Whats the endurance rating in hours?
    If under 5000 hr…
    no.
We dont want some samsung 3000 hours life endurance, pentile matrix crap
If they offer sth good, its a go.

  • Makiz

they made the first flexible OLED back then too, google it, you’ll be amazed :)

  • iia3ezu

Bad thing about OLED is the blue color decays faster than green and red. But the technology has advanced over the years, so that should no longer be a problem.

Good thing about OLED is it uses less power, so battery life might last longer. Also, wider viewing angles and deeper blacks.

I hope Sony does not use a Pentile OLED display and stick to normal RGB, maybe with some proprietary Sony technology to enhance the display.

I also hope Sony has a good replacement plan in case of pixel defects.

This might be the year of OLED displays, especially if Apple iPhones (10th year anniversary) this year also use OLED instead of LCD.

  • Khillo81

For me, as long as they maintain their current displays, they can launch a phone with OLED. I wouldn’t buy it though.

  • jxPerience

It’s a welcome change, but Sony Mobile needs a total rebranding.
Xperia brand is not as effective anymore and it has so much negative issues.

Microsoft is in the right path with Surface Brand
HTC saw light to make Vive Phone Brand

Sony needs to showcase new Sony Mobile Brand. 1 or 3 Devices in different sizes representing the best of Sony.

Any idea about new Sony Mobile Brand?

  • Luigi De Francesco

Xz and x compact have excellent cameras and excellent battery :)

  • theskig

Mi Mix has this solution but the audio quality isn’t good.

  • As they are buying the OLED components anyway, they can start instantly if they want to.

  • theskig

I have the same issue on my Z5 Premium and thought it was for the heat.
I realized after weeks that the phone is bent (power button area) and the yellow spot is exactly in that area.

  • Terence Wu

    Agree!

  • Terence Wu

Mine is not bent though – it’s on the upper left corner of the screen. After a little digging on the Internet, conclusions are that, if your BIONZ processor or Snapdragon processor or your battery is right beneath that area, it is VERY likely that the cause is heat. It’s said that the glue applied between the glasses or the frame “melted” and “permeated” into the screen. Bending cause the LCD to “leak” and in most cases, it’s not yellow… HOWEVER, it is reported that if a pressure is incorrectly applied to the back of the LCD screen, it can have the same issue.

  • theskig

In my case is bending for sure. If I “twist” the phone I can see the spot changing color.
I had also Z2 and Z3 for long time but on them no issues at all.

  • Terence Wu

OMG. Hope SONY for better build quality (for now it’s good, but improvement can be made).
The issue I mentioned is not as frequent as that on Xperia S. But you can also Google “Xperia yellow spot” to see some similar cases.

  • theskig

    Welcome OLED!

  • Ralphch97

    Asking the right questions here

  • Moisés

No… If it is true my z4 is the last Sony I shall have.
Just do not know where I will find LCD + stereo sound. I do not want iphone.

They may buy from LG. LG does not use on their phones, except G Flex 2.

I prefer to stay free of burn in and oversaturation.

  • Moisés

Does anyone know why nobody has LED or Plasma display on smartphones?

I have heard plasma has best images ever. But here we no longer find the tvs.

  • Jennifersmartin

Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !ud332c:

  • dragonsneeze

I always found OLEDs weird. Maybe too hyperrealistic? Idk. makes me uneasy.

  • mugglearchitect

plasma tvs has instructions that when transporting, it should always be upright. i hope you got what i mean

  • Talos the Robot

And also the white balance is changing all time due to the degradation of the blue light.

  • Talos the Robot

The future is the microLED technology. It’s better than oled and lcd, more reliable and consume less energy. But until they introduced you better stay far from oled.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

NOPE, people assume it from LG although xperiablog already stated about JDI will release OLED tv screen in 2017 back in 2015. why would japan outsource OLED screen from LG while JDI has much superior quality because it don’t have LG OLED weakness

  • Talos the Robot

No microLED is the future, and Apple is reportedly switching to this technology for their smartwatches, away from Oled. Sony should do the same for any Xperia device. Sony attempts on oled technology always failed like the fist TV in 2007, the oled Walkman and the oled ps vita.

  • Talos the Robot

Sharp has been doing this for a long time on their igzo displays.

  • Uzair Syed

Yup. Love the OLED on my Vita.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

SONY CLEDIS is much more superior because LG and SAMSUNG using Active Matrix OLED while SONY CLEDIS using Passive Matrix OLED which fixed all problems what your stated above

  • Nono

Wow, the comment section here is full of cancer.
    Too many delusional fanboys.

OLED is not inaccurate or oversaturated if it’s calibrated properly. Samsung’s displays are way more accurate and reproduces colors better than Sony’s displays do. One thing is that Sony continues to ship very cold displays. That already makes the displays inaccurate when the ideal color temperature is 6500K. Samsung does the most to ensure proper display calibration out of anyone in the Android market right now. Google and OnePlus has also tried to get close at least. Those are the standards which one should hold OLED displays to. Anything else is ridiculous.

Burn-in and display degradation may or may not be a problem over time but it all depends on how the device handles it. Obviously no technology is perfect. LCDs can’t display black to begin with so that’s an issue as well. They also suffer from higher latencies than OLED meaning they’re not Daydream-compatible.

Pentile sucks so some of the other manufacturers of OLED displays need to challenge Samsung with proper RGB displays. If LG could shrink their OLED TV displays down for smartphones and start selling them it could be a huge advancement for OLED on smartphones. The RGBW matrix they use can reduce degradation and improve peak brightness by a lot so that outdoor use would be a lot better and generally better power efficiency when displaying white. It’s all about competition.

  • عدنان ایوب

Yeah surely it will enhance they screen time experience.

  • Raj Singh

    Next year?!

  • Moisés

    Could be both… Partnership

  • kaostheory

Plasma has the best colour accuracy/contrast and least motion blurring but can no longer keep up with brightness (needed for HDR) and power/heat is terrible.

  • bryan

actually black does not help much too, as some is not deep black, the display is still on and seeing many google apps is in white, it is very unlikely it will save battery

  • azzido

Why 2018? It should be 2017, Sony always late to the party…

  • Timel

    Why not this year?
    Sony is always too late

  • KenC17

There’s no suppliers that can supply that much OLED displays. Samsung is already preoccupied with Apple’s order for next year, and they have to keep enough for their own devices. LG and JDI are barely ramping up OLED productions, which is why Sony will have to wait. It’s not their fault.

  • Khalid Abdi

Well OLED is cool but that is not Sony’s future because CLEDIS is the future for Sony and they have started to put in the techno conventions and like CES and others in 2017.
Sony is entering the OLED because it doesn’t want to get out of the business and lose that’s why it is entering OLED and Sony knows that a lot of people want the company to enter the OLED market with their phones and TVs and same goes with Apple because her and Oculus bought the MicroLED companies

  • (NinJer)

Well it does save power if you use a lower brightness or have lots of black, i know this from experience on my huawei watch, noticed this when i started using the custom flat watch face by google with a black background i get 2 days of battery now even with full brightness, instead of 1 day with a coloured watch face.

  • azzido

Ok I did not know. It is better Sony has ots own OLEDs or any other technology as they will make us bored to death with lcd…

  • azzido

Shamesung’s qled is crap, I was reading about the technology and I do not want it no matter the brand…

  • M Usman

Take a look at the Huawei p9 plus

  • Manu

I am not trolling, but: I wouldn’t swear Sony will be still making smartphones in 2018 :/

  • Moisés

I usually keep my phone for 2 years.
    2013 ( samsung pocket), 2015( sony c).
Just got my z4 in april because of an emergency. I was going to buy it this year only.

I like something less than 6″ of body size. Front speakers and powerful camera.
Huawei does not work here. If I buy out of country, they might charge me taxes on it, maybe even 60% of cellphone’s price.
And it would take at least 50 days to be delivered..

  • Moisés

I forgot that, heard that plasma tv can get hot

  • Moisés

    Xperia Z : 2013-15
    Xperia X: 2016-18

  • Moisés

90% of oled displays for smartphones are made by Samsung. They are amoled, a subgroup of oled.
Apple wants to buy from Samsung, but the coreans are not sure if they can make enough.
That is why Sony is going to wait for LG and JDI

  • KIMI

Mi Mix is different than what was shown by sony on ces. The Mi Mix works through bone induction speaker, the actial speaker for the device is a pair of bottom firing ones. Sony still hasnt reveal how the acousitc surface tech works but unlike the mi mix speaker it doesnt need to have your face planted onto the screen for there to be noticable sound.

  • KIMI

Im pretty sure that not all OLED are oversaturated, those that we see now by samsung and lg are either cheap/inferior or are calibrate to look like so since majority of the consumer loves those flashy colour. Sony do sell OLED monitors for the pro market it being in that market tells that it has to have accurate colour reproduction, if theyre as oversaturared as found in samsung and lg devices, most movies out in theatre would look dull due to the post production team equipped with inaccurate monitors. Thats why im hopeful that Sony can deliver an accurrate oled with amazing black levels.

  • KIMI

Sony do have their own oled technology which is far superior than most oled seen in the consumer market, its called Trimaster EL OLED however theyre far too expensive and hard to manufacture. JDI as I’m aware right now is busy supplying display for Apple.

  • KIMI

Surprising enough XZ managed to outnumber google pixel only second to samsung in adoption rate . I would have swore sony mobile is flopping hard in 2016.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Not excellent battery, atleast not the xz but it’s decent xD

  • theskig

No, you’re completely wrong it’s the same system. Why so many were fooled by the bone thing?

  • theskig

That’s a big jumble of words, so let’s break it down. “Piezoelectric ceramic” is just a component that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy—you apply voltage and it vibrates. A “cantilever” is a beam attached to something at one end, and judging by Xiaomi’s video, it’s connected to the piezoelectric as a resonance booster. This enhances the vibration. All this mechanical energy is transferred to the phone’s internal metal frame, which then vibrates to create sound.

Vibrating an internal metal frame to create sound means the sound isn’t as localized as it would be from a speaker. Sticking your ear anywhere on the top quarter of the phone—front or back—is good enough to pick up noise.

  • Luigi De Francesco

X compact have a monster battery life. Like phones with 4000 mah. Everything is optimized. 7-8 hours of screen and above in one day. 6 :30 with the worst situation. I have xz and in worst situation i reach 5 hours and 10 min. In Best i reach 7 hours of screen. In normal 6. The others phones with this soc have a worst battery with similar mah.

  • razorg

January 2017 security patch is soon coming to Xperia XZ, X Performance, X Compact and X, as it seems. Meanwhile we, Z3+/Z5 users, are seen as “b.stards” and thrown out to the street by Sony apparently. Still on Marshmallow… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ef268debae004a1e38921539c9a484d05ea241a160593194cdfa4bd9d552805a.png

  • Moisés

    Maybe they jump to 7.1.
    Z3+ never had 5.1.1

  • razorg

I seriously hope so. After all this wait if they give us a measly 7.0 update, it’ll be a huge minus on my list for Sony and will probably affect my decision for my next phone next year. Might go to Samsung or even Nokia’s upcoming S835 flagships… OR even Apple! (moving to Apple would probably solve this update-waiting issue for me though…)

  • Moisés

Wait to see if the X Premium is real.
    It might come this time.
As a repleacement to z5 premium.
Snapdragon 835 and 4K HDR display.

  • razorg

Even if it is real (and I hope it is. It sounds AMAZING!), when the situation is like this; I mean Sony having this tendency to randomly drop models out of the spotlight, I don’t think I could go for X Premium as a replacement of my Z5 Compact. Sony needs to earn our trust for proper software support before I’ll think of going to another Sony upgrade…

  • Treb Amurao

    Nougat for Xperia Z5 Premium???

  • Moisés

There is a chance of a new compact too… More powerful than XZ.

If all gossips are true, they might bring 4 phones this semester.

    X with snapdragon 821
    A compact with snap 821
    Xa with snap 653
    X Premium snap 835

    Let’s hope it’s true

  • Actman

Z5? My X Compact is still running MM! Seriously I don’t understand SONY’s tendency here.

  • QBerto

ugh….. srlsy I hope NOT, sony is one of the fews that doesn’t use OLED now, and srsly speaking, with my usage hours in the car/sun I CAN’T have an OLED screen phone, right n ow apart from my Z5 I have an S7edge from work, and in just 3months of dialy normal usage, the screen was marked with some parts of the waze and maps apps, it sucks…. Sony please don’t use crappy oled

I got an XZ this year because I wanted an LCD display. Every single AMOLED phone I’ve used has suffered the dreaded burn-in within 12 months. I’m a heavy user and NEED LCD.

  • singh

yes your right sony were the pioneers of oled, i saw this back in 2008 on my trip to Tokyo. Lets get one thing straight sony were the 1st with OLED TV back in 2007 ,they then sold the tech to LG.

  • singh

calm down you will get nougat soon, whats the hurry? i have a z5 and a XZ the XZ is running nougat, the z5 android 6. When it arrives for z5 it will bring new features , but to be honest the average person wouldn’t evan notice.

  • Rene Pedroso

    AWESOME

  • Actman

Don’t you think it’s kinda ignoramus when it (7.0) was released for XC on global but you are not getting it. I mean we paid for the same amount to get that device. So what makes the prejudicial from SONY?

  • Andeu

please make your phones with removable battery, doing so will make xperia phones more popular. should be possible as the old sony ericssons cybershort waterproof.

I just updated Nougat for my Z5 Dual half and hour ago. Have you got it as well? Sad to say it’s a trashy update!

  • Brandon LeGendre

Sadly no, havent gotten anything as yet for my tw customized, guess I have a long wait

  • Hein S

If LG would sell Sony the small OLED.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Its using Japan Display panels so it will 100% use RGB, there will be no pentile. The reason why Xperias haven’t been using OLEDs up until today is because they are plagued with Pentile cancer.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Japan Display OLEDs will not suffer from burn-ins due to the use of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) organic emitters, only Samsung/LG OLEDs are known to suffer from it.

  • Shamoy Rahman

OLEDs really don’t overall save more power. Whites in OLEDs burn more energy than LCDs and colors too. If only you have a large amount of black pixels most of the time will you really see similar power consumption to an LCD.

  • Dedoy Sorce

    It’ll be not water proof

  • Hrijoy Majumder

Xperia X series was the best experience for me and if Sony in 2018 use OLED Tech with 4k in there phones then it will be a miracle for sony fans and I am the one them.. But the only OLED tech is not enough if I compare with others.. So please include retina scanner, wireless charging. But don’t forgot old models and there OS update because it is also mostly important part to take the market.. Best wishes for you SONY.. LOVE YOU.. 2018 is your..
