Chinese media is reporting that Sony Mobile will be holding a press conference in the country on 15 January 2013 to announce the launch of new smartphones. None of this is surprising as we expect first official news on new Xperia handsets to appear at the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas, which starts on 8 January 2013.
The Sony C660X (codename Yuga), to be known as the Xperia Z, is expected to be announced. We may also see its sibling handset, the Sony C650X (codename Odin) announced too. Rumours from these same media reports suggest Odin will come to the market as the Xperia X.
The Chinese version of the Sony Xperia Z, codenamed Yuga, will have model number L36h. We understand that the new Xperia model number structure does not extend to China, where they will continue to use the L, M, S codes seen in previous years to represent large, medium and small handsets. Internationally, the Xperia Z (Yuga) is expected to sport model numbers C6602 and C6603.
In terms of price point, the reports suggest that the Xperia Z will hit the market with a similar price as the Sony Xperia TX (LT29i). The Xperia TX is currently on sale for 4,298 Yuan in China (£427, €520, $689).
The Sony C650X ‘Odin’, rumoured to be known as the Xperia X, will have model number L35h in China. It is the sibling phone to the Xperia Z, with similar specifications but different design. International model numbers for Odin include C6502, C6503, C6506.
Specs for both phones include a 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP Exmor RS camera, 2GB RAM, APQ8064 Snapdragon chipset with 1.5GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 320 graphics. The Yuga will be the premium model and feature a water/dust resistant chassis.
