Sony has announced the IMX586 CMOS camera sensor for smartphones, which features the industry’s highest 48 Effective Megapixels, and world’s first with an ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8 μm.
The sensor is a 1/2-type (8.0 mm diagonal) and uses the Quad Bayer colour filter array, where adjacent 2×2 pixels come in the same colour, making high-sensitivity shooting possible. It is expected to ship in September 2018, so could feature in smartphones later in the year, hopefully a future Xperia model.
Thanks Adi, Andrew, Chaturanga, Diogo, Max, Nikhil and Yuri!
