As 2019 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on Sony’s smartphone journey over the past year. It’s been an interesting one for Sony, yes we all know that Xperia shipments continue to decline, quite significantly in fact – driven partly by the company pulling out of many regions, and apathy by the consumer.

Sony spends very little on marketing compared to the giants of the smartphone world, so it can’t expect to drive the same share. At the same time, while Sony continues to create solid all-round phones, it does not push the envelope in features that matter little to the consumer (4K display is a prime example here).

2019 was the year that Sony went all-in on the ultra-wide display trend, with pretty much all of its main phones sporting 21:9 display ratios. The Xperia 1 flagship was certainly unique in that sense, as well as being the first Sony phone to have a 4K OLED HDR display and triple camera setup.

While the Xperia 1 may have been a bit too tall for some, this is where the Xperia 5 came in, with most of the same hardware, including chipset and triple cameras – in a more manageable form factor. It may not have been a true ‘Compact’ phone, but for many it was good enough. After all, it’s unlikely we’ll see any more ‘true’ Compact phones from Sony which is a shame.

Then there was the Xperia 8 and 10, 10 Plus mid-rangers which also sported 21:9 displays. The Xperia 10 in particular was let down by low specs, even for a mid-range phone in 2019, particularly given that Sony seem incapable of pricing phones keenly.

Anyway, we wanted to turn the question over to you. What was your standout Xperia product in 2019? What was your favourite and why? Which phones left you disappointed? What would you like to see in 2020? Please vote in the poll and let us know in the comments below.
