How long does it usually take between the certification process and actual release to handsets? My carrier has no own bloatware installed, so I am hoping that it won't delay the update.

As long as the PTCRB advertised firmware version actually makes it for release; it happened couple of times that in 2 weeks after certification, Sony to issue another version for certification and the process to start again; I would not hold my breath on PTCRB, I would check the XPERIA Updatechecker by Macmol, if it is released there (even for other countries) then definitely would hit your own as well.
