    Hi,

Xperia Z 4.4.2 firmware just became available here in Turkey today. After reading all the negative reviews and problems experienced by other users I decided to take a clean approach. I backed up my data using the built in backup & restore program. Then I used Sony Update Service to update the phone to 4.4.2 with a factory reset. Everything went fine and in my short time with the phone I am not seeing any problems (heat, lag, battery or otherwise).

I have one major problem though. When I tried to restore my backup the built in backup & restore app refused saying that the data was created in an earlier version of android and it was incompatible with my version. I am stuck. I can see the backup files on the SD card but I cannot do anything with them.

Is there any way I can extract the SMS messages from the files (I am guessing the com.sonyericsson.conversations file) and copy them to my phone. I can recover everything else.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Mehmet

I know what the problem is but I think it is a major oversight that a current version of built in backup cannot restore an earlier version's files. After all you are supposed to back up your files before a major upgrade.

Anyhow I solved my problem by restoring my backup to my wife's phone which is still on 4.3, backing that up via PC Companion and restoring that backup to my Xperia Z again using PC Companion. Of course I took precautions to restore my wife's phone to its original state.

    A lesson learned.

If the backup file is on your SD Card, you can always flash the 4.3 ftf back and restore your files.
Then backup your SMS using the SMS Backup and Restore app from the Play Store.
