I'm wondering whether anyone has heard of, or has thoughts about this issue. My one week old Xperia Z developed what looked like a line across the LCD screen from middle left to top right. Everything above the line did not work. However there was not a mark on the phone and the glass was intact. Having sent it back to Three Mobile (their customer services has been very uninspiring) they said that there was "damage to your main electronics board" caused by "the phone being dropped or crushed". Unfortunately they have been very unspecific about the nature of the fault. Knowing that I haven't either dropped or crushed it in any way, I am wondering whether anyone may have any alternative explanations for the damage. The phone had a good quality case on it and screen protector. There was neither a mark on the case nor on the glass. The phone was working fine in front of me on my desk and then developed this fault without touching it at all in between uses, perhaps 10-15 minutes. This was my second handset after the first one failed to work after a day, with the touchscreen not responding. The only other issue I had with the replacement was that the top of the phone got extremely hot when using it to play video/streaming etc. I got the phone, my first Sony, on the basis that they Sony it was a robust handset but my experience so far is that it is far from it. It seems unlikely in the extreme that there would be internal damage without any external damage at all. Of course "physical damage" is not covered by any warranty and therefore it seems I have to prove I didn't drop or crush it. Is there anyone out there with any similar problems?
I suspect the screen is cracked. Because there is a protective plastic film over the glass you won't see the crack. My phone also came with another film as a scratch protector to protect the film that Sony fit. For some reason Sony expect the customer to fit that and it is not easy to do without getting bubbles underneath. If you put the phone in your pocket without a case the screen will break. Sony don't warn you about this. It happened to me even though it was in a leather flip case although the Sony fitted protector had been removed because it was scratched. I took it off after advice from Sony customer service. They said they would send me a new screen protector but they didn't. After it cracked I had to claim on the insurance that came with my Virgin contract. If you are in the UK you may be able to get help from Trading Standards. Otherwise it depends on your local trading laws.
Thanks guys. It seems someone has had a similar problem with no apparent cause but I'm afraid it doesn't help. I'm in the UK and have told my network supplier that I'll take the matter to small claims court. Its unfortunate that this seems the only way forward but I'm thinking the phone is not anywhere near as robust as it claims or I had a faulty one in the first place,
I too am suffering from the same problems discussed here on this thread; I actually watched my screen crack very slowly from left to right whilst watching a video. The phone had never suffered any impacts and had been out being used for 30 minutes prior to the breakage. There is definitely a flaw with the glass on the phone. I love the phone to bits and have done nothing but praise it since I have had it. Sony at the present time will not recognise the problem and as such it is not covered under warranty and they want to charge me £200 to replace something I have had no control in happening. There are lots of people in the same boat and we have a thread over on the official Sony support forum discussing this trying to get Sony to recognise that there is a problem with the glass on their flagship phone. Same issue here with Vodafone just saying physical damage - no warranty repair. Apprantly Sony may be more helpful - going to try them next. Have also sent formal 'supply of goods and services act' complaint letter to Vodafone to try and get their head out of the sand.
