Z3 Compact: can no longer Add Shortcut to Home Screen (for a file)

I have owned my Z3 for 4 months, and very happy with it. The firmware has upgraded twice, and is currently on Android 5.1.1, build 23.4.A.0.546. Fortunately I have had none of the battery and other problems which have plagued other people.

However in ES File Explorer and File Commander I was previously able to select a file and using the menu create a shortcut on the Home Screen. This option has now disappeared from the menu in both these programs, I suspect as a result of one of the upgrades.

I can still create a shortcut to a URL from within Chrome, or to a text file from within Jota+ Editor. But I can no longer create shortcuts to images or PDFs.

I suspect Lollipop, because on my Samsung tablet which is Android 5.0.2, ES File Explorer and My Files are both up-to-date, and both create shortcuts.

Any ideas?
