Sony Ericsson LT28at for AT&T brings 4.55-inch 720p display, 13MP camera, LTE

Why the heck does it support TD-SCDMA? Nobody in North America uses TD-SCDMA.

perhaps for business trips to China?

Who cares what “carriers” (network operators to the rest of the world) want? What do CONSUMERS want?

I reckon this this could be a more global phone than just for the US, and reckon it’s just using an ST-Ericsson modem of some kind that supports both LTE and TD, e.g.: Thor M7400 modem:

Now that I looked them up, Qualcomm do have the MSM8x60A which supports all of:
GSM (GPRS, EDGE), W-CDMA/UMTS (HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+ cat.14), MBMS,

CDMA2000 (1xRTT, 1xEV-DO Rel.0/Rev.A/Rev.B, 1xEV-DO MC Rev.A),

TD-SCDMA

This is likely to be the answer. It’s actually really good news because it is not only a truly global chip, but it is also a 28nm part!!

PS: you aren’t at the “mercy” of your carrier at all – be smart and buy SIM-free!

AT&T practices IMEI whitelisting. If the IMEI isn’t on their list, your phone doesn’t work. And guess what? Most AT&T-compatible phones not sold by AT&T are not whitelisted! Mostly international Samsung, HTC, and Motorola phones are whitelisted. A few Sony Ericssons are too, but most of them are not. Only T-Mobile USA allows for any GSM device to be used on their network.

Unfortunately, that’s been tried before. Not only with AT&T, but with Verizon and Sprint as well. The result is that the FCC has so far stated that MEID/IMEI blocking is permitted because the carriers offer a way for manufacturers to certify their devices for the network. My guess is that Sony Ericsson hasn’t done it for a majority of their devices.

S3 don’t support TD-SCDMA, only S4 do, and they are 8260A and 8960

Dude, I’ve never had any problem using unlocked SE phones on AT&T. I just call them and have my IMEI registered before the first use.

In Japan, we have IMEI whitelisting as well.
For some carriers like the dominant one, NTT Docomo, you can use other phones that are not whitelisted except you will pay $30-60 more for data. (After pressure, I think they dropped that price differential down to $30… basically you are treated like you are always tethering and are charged the tethering rate)

From the SoftbankSucks blog, it sounds like it is impossible or nearly impossible to get something put on the whitelist.

that’s too awesome with 1.5ghz dual core, 13mp at back camera and 1.3mp at front camera with HD 720p~ that’s too crazy and a real direct hit to samsung and apple. If wanna check for the camera’s result, i have had them in my blog~ =)

It’s a phone. It’s a tablet. No, it’s Super Phone! This should be an interesting option for consumers considering a upgrading their smartphone or adding a tablet. Will we see one at CES? Hope so!

Xperia Ion(LT28) is now oficially announced, it has 1.5GB RAM 16/32GB Internal Memory, No Memory Card Slot and yes, it is released under Sony and at&t and it has 12 MP not 13MP.
