Xperia Z: European and Japanese displays compared

in Xperia - Japan Models, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL

The display of the Sony Xperia Z continues to be a big talking point. We see articles popping up every day comparing the handset against other phones to try to put to rest concerns over viewing angles and contrast. There has also been some chatter that the display Sony uses in the Japanese version of the Xperia Z (SO-02E) is better than the European version (C6603).

Well the guys over at mobiltelefon.ru managed to pit the Japanese and European Xperia Z’s against each other. From what we can see, the DoCoMo version does seem to have the edge, but we wouldn’t say the difference is night and day. The DoCoMo version does seem to have slightly deeper blacks and marginally better viewing angles. What do you think? Can you see any difference between the two?

Black Xperia Z (C6603) – Western release
White Xperia Z (SO-02E) – Japanese NTT DoCoMo release

But can we trust tree settings are the same?

the button strap on Japanese version is completely black while the Europian version looks gray.
but all in all, both look the same but Japanese one has deeper blacks as it is mentioned. why??

  • Tony R

The EU Version does indeed have a light grey nav bar / notification bar. I have a UK 6603 Xperia Z and blacks are lovely, but I don’t understand why Sony chose to use the light grey color instead of black here! :(

I want the sheep from the DOCOMO version!!! Where can I find it??

  • http://twitter.com/chilko Momchil Karabulev

they mention that the strip is intentionally made gray for eu version

  • Richard McKenna

I have the C6603 (western version) and the grey bars at the top and bottom are a lot darker than what is shown in the photos even with the brightness set to max. It does look like the brightness setting is different on the 2 devices.

They’re asking for trouble that’s why. I’m sure Apple wouldn’t do that with it’s products around the world (anyone can confirm this?).

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

    Japanese much more better

The use of grey is stupid and I am surprised that Sony couldn’t have at least offered some choice with the themes (or will one day open up themes to third parties – something Sony Ericsson pioneered in the early days on its feature phones).

With the grey bar still visable within some apps that go partially full-screen but keep the small dots, it spoils the overall look and feel of the whole phone – and for what, a silly decision on a background colour!

Come on Sony – change this in the next ROM update, and while you’re at it – please stop trying so hard to soften and filter photos in anything but good lighting!

Really why? Did they think Europeans need a different colour to remind them that those are “bars” and can be clicked/dragged? I fear for the US version then.

Agreed! I’m very happy with how mine works / looks!

What is that icon to the left of “no sim” on the black one?

  • Ahmad

I think its software issue, because if you can see the wallpaper is in the same black deep, its just the nav bar which is from the software.

  • hans

I’m sure many of the mobile reviewer is fallen into this kind of bias, caused by Sony’s gray color decision. For me both of them screen is quite equal. Now if only Sony didn’t choose that gray but go black instead, i’m sure Xperia Z will come out as clean winner from the start, if only human eyes could differentiate better.

  • rihito

This comparison is a little bit unfair. SO-02E comes with two (switchable) flavors of customized Android skins: standard Xperia UI (Timescape) and DoCoMo UI (Palette). That one up there with black navigation strip is the DoCoMo UI. He/she should switch it to standard Xperia UI before comparing it to the international version.

  • hans

but ofc i could (hope) smell xda mod on the way ;)

It’s only available in Japan. It’s actually a Siri-like voice-enabled “butler” service. And it ain’t free… it’ll cost you 105 yen per month.

some of the carriers like 3 in the uk actually have black bars

  • Ziich

all im going to say in terms of the display is that i will wait until i get it in my hands to see if i like it or not. This sorta reminds me of the antenna gate with the iphone 4 when it came out. got one and it was perfectly fine. still works to this day

I see the video and in all version (2011 2012 and 2013) sony use cheap TN display that for nature have bad view angle and black is dark grey. Ips is another world.

My friend and I both picked up a western Z and there’s even a difference between our displays. His has much better contrast and vivid colours, mine looks pale by comparison although the white is purer. On full brightness, his is considerably brighter than mine.

  • PRo

Is der Display Caliber software included in it ?

  • http://twitter.com/tonyreilly Tony Reilly

Not that I’ve found on the device! :( I got mine, sim free, direct from Sony as a review unit

Mine is like the Docomo version! Not a great difference!

  • Abdullah Kakooli

TN and IPS are both TFT displays. Problem with IPS is reflection, but its brighter. I dont care about viewing angles cuz y would i look on my phone 150 degrees off center.
Hope Sony uses Opticontrast panels with IPS

  • http://twitter.com/DumaStudetto Duma Studetto

Apple sources displays from different suppliers and there is a panel lottery – but it’s worldwide the same for everyone. This applies across the line: laptops, tablets, phones.

If Sony is purposely allocating the best displays for the Japenese market while providing all customers with a cheaper, lower quality display in Western markets that is a big concern.

Can’t say i’m surprised. One doesn’t even have to get a device from another continent to see this. I got one Xperia ray for private stuff (german model 1252), several months later i got another for work (german/french/italian model 1251).
Guess what… the second one has a different display, with a slight yellowish tone compared to the first, and also worse viewing angles.

  • http://www.facebook.com/billythefretes Billy de Fretes

i think every smartphone has the same problem not only sony. my iphone 4 and my friends iphone 4 also have different display. i don’t know what’s the problem but my friend iphone 4 got more yellowish. even iphone 5 too. most of my co workers have iphone 5. in same brightness (50%) some of them have yellowish problem too.

  • jag

yeah.. it does look like a different skin.

  • Strange

The is a big error in all this test. The phones should be placed in the same position and tested individually and then compared through video or pictures. It is no brainer that when phones are placed beside each other, the angles of the two phone screen surface to the lenses of the recording camera is not the same. Therefore, the above results cannot be used.

  • Ivan

I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, that’s not the only place they use gray. Just look at the app drawer which uses a gray background over the grayed out wallpaper. It’s horrible and the only thing they can achieve this way is the washed-out-display effect. I expected more from Sony since they are capable of great UI, for example they can implement some guess-my-mood functionality which colorizes the aforementioned bars according to your wallpaper. I hope Sony listen to the customers and get rid of the dull gray in the next roms. However, I still love my XZ…

  • Adeel

yea…, your science is so true…..

  • AlexBurnout

So much better contrast on the Japanese version.

  • Ambassadeur

This thread at xda-forum explains it all – and why there might be confusion…

they didnt use a TN panel, TN inverts colors when you watch them from a different angle. This is not the case. The white only gets a bit more bright and the screen loses contrast when you watch it at a different angle. This is also the case with many ips and mva panels. In fact the screen reminds me of many MVA panels that i saw.
