Xperia ZR_Press_21Sony formally announced the Xperia ZR (C550X) this morning and has us excited for it high levels of water resistance (IP55/IP58) and the inclusion of a dedicated camera button. This makes it the first high-end water resistant Xperia since the acro S to include the camera button. All of this combined, will make it an ideal smartphone for the pool or beach when taking snaps of family & friends.

Yes, the handset is chunkier than the Xperia Z (C660X) and loses the glass back, but it is still attractive in its own right. It has a plastic back used to access the removable 2300mAh battery. It also has a notification light similar to the Xperia ZL (C650X). The Xperia ZR promo videos focus on its imaging performance in water, as you’d expect. We have attached these below along with a bunch of press photos.

8GB of internal storage…i’m just hoping that we can move apps or game data to SD card

  • jag

Hmm… So sony granted the small hands’ wish! But still a lot of people will complain for having another phone beside s Xperia Z.

  • burn

i was about to buy xperia sp when this wild ZR appears!

  • Vga front camera? :(
but still my next phone. x)

  • APai

    *removable battery*
SO hard to find in the sony stable!

  • Xperia V upgrade :) SP’s waterproof counter part :)

  • Perl

    I hate the back

  • kust0r

hoping for a better camera than the XPS’s one!

  • Wait for Xperia i1!

  • I love the back. I hate glass backs.

  • Babylonbwoy

Available in france this summer according to various french site. Same specs as XZ, looks good but no 4G/LTE and only 8Go :(

Would be perfect to replace my second phone which is XT!

  • 8Gb, bye.

  • mountain

This phone, unlike the acro S, will sell well. Acro S missed the summer pooling season by releasing it in August, while ZR will be available next month!

  • sony should make a xperia z mini phone with camera bottom, water-resistant, ~4.3 inches, stereo speakers walkman…. :) much more love!

  • jgjhj

Could someone explain why 8GB of internal storage is bad? This has the SD card slot so you can just upgrade to 16GB or 32GB… :S

  • Guest

GSMArena said it is not removable.

  • hamboy

I’d still go for the SP personally.

  • not sure xZR has removable batery :/

  • APai

too bad phone manufacturers these days are cutting that feature out. maybe they expect us to change the phone every 2 years ? or sooner?

  • While it’s enough for the most part, 8GB is lacking when you want to install major games on the unit

Such games are designed with their libraries accessible only via the main memory of the phone for accessibility and ease of programming issues, and many aren’t designed with an option of being offloaded to external memory unfortunately

SD card slots are good for media storage, but not for large application access like game textures and such due to reasons like texture streaming, which requires quick access speeds and hampers user experience in games, especially when you’re using slow SD cards

  • jgjhj

Ah that clears it up thanks!

  • hans

Well SP is a bit more elegant i think. The ZR design is too bland, nothing special (except the white, which might have better outline solely because of white color) I prefer Xperia A though :)

  • hans

On a second thought, a removable battery is the saving grace, i take back my words ha!

  • anonymous

Sony, why do you continue making white phones with black fronts? Are you just trying to antagonize us on purpose? Almost all companies make white phones white all the way through (Samsung, lg, etc.)

  • In my opinion that black front is the best design decision.

  • Dean

The specs sheet on the Sony website says it has a shatterproof sheet on scratch resistant glass screw that shit my Xperia Z has scratches on that sheet that’s a deal breaker imho

  • Tim

The sheet isn’t scratch proof. It’s just shatterproof. I don’t know what you’re so angry about, I think you’re missing an understanding of what each thing is.

  • Me too, I prefer glass back like Z !

  • Yeah !

  • MyLive

exactly.. default wallpaper on sony is black, so this make the phone looks bezzel less! We should Sony follow others?

  • MyLive

That mint variant reminds me of a SE C702.. the first splashproof (or waterproof?) phone from SE..

  • Dean

I’m angry coz the glass is scratch resistant anyway I took that stupid sheet off the back of my Xperia Z my phone fell off my lap and onto a concrete floor it didn’t smash or crack the glass. My Xperia Z didn’t even come with the screen protector in the box and it gets scratches all over the screen and I don’t even put keys in my pocket

  • I love the black front!

  • cs098

if it does, insta buy :D

  • cs098

actually the new white paper for the zr says it is :D ;D ;D

  • Mohammad Shazwan Mohd Saad

Simple answer. It is designed for taking pictures under water. That’s it.

  • abamsky

i like the back because it can be opened and the batt is removable :)

  • deep

    it is removable…………………….
