Xperia Z DebrandWe have been receiving a number of emails from Xperia S owners asking us to provide a guide on using Flashtool and how to flash the latest Jelly Bean update. We’ve included some steps below that should help along with a download file for the FTF firmware. However, we do have alternative download links in our Firmware Database – this is also open to users to link their own FTF firmware files to share with others.

Please note the pictures used are from our recent Xperia Z Debrand tutorial, but the principal remains the same for the Xperia S. The instructions should be self-explanatory, although if you do have any questions let us know in the comments below. Thanks to Androxyde for his wonderful work in creating and maintaining Flashtool.

Guide to installing Jelly Bean to your Xperia S using FlashTool

Disclaimer: Please read the following instructions thoroughly before attempting to flash your phone. Xperia Blog absolves itself from any responsibility should something go wrong. Please proceed with caution and at your own risk.

Note: This tutorial does not require you to root your handset nor does it require you to unlock your bootloader. FLASHING YOUR HANDSET DOES NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

PREPARATION

1) Download and install Flashtool on your PC from here (Linux / Mac).

2) Enable ‘USB debugging’ on your handset: Settings > Developer options

3) Enable ‘Unknown sources’ on your handset: Settings > Security

FLASHTOOL GUIDE

1) Install drivers for your Xperia handset
The very first step is to make sure that your PC has all of the necessary drivers installed for your Sony Xperia. The best way to do this is to install PC Companion or Sony Update Service (SUS).

Make sure you connect your Xperia to the PC before starting the process to download the necessary USB and ADB drivers. If you have any problems you will find the necessary drivers once you have installed Flashtool in the following location: ‘C:\Flashtool\drivers’.

2) Download the firmware

Download the firmware:
6.2.B.0.200_Global for Xperia S (LT26i)

If you can source a different FTF for your region, you can use that instead of the above file.

Google Drive has a tendency to block downloads temporarily if they are downloaded too often in a short period. If that happens to the above file, then please head over to the Xperia S Firmware Database to find other options, you can also upload your own FTF files here to share with others.

3) Place firmware in correct location on your PC
Place the FTF file in the C:\Flashtool\firmwares folder.

4) Launch Flashtool
Open the Flashtool application on your PC.

Xperia S Jelly Bean

Click on the lightning bolt symbol. Select Flashmode and click OK.

Xperia S Jelly Bean

5) Select firmware
Select the firmware that you have downloaded in the left column. If you do not want to do a clean install ensure ‘Data’ is not ticked. Press the ‘Flash’ button.

Xperia S Jelly Bean

6) Connect your Xperia to the PC

Once you press the Flash button, you will see that Flashtool is ‘Preparing files for flashing’.

Xperia S Jelly Bean

When you see the prompt below you need to connect your Xperia handset to the PC. Turn your phone off. Press and hold the volume down button while plugging the USB cable into your Xperia.

Xperia S Jelly Bean

7) Flashing process will start
The flashing process should now start.

Xperia S Jelly Bean

Once you see the “Flashing finished” message in Flashtool, remove your handset from the PC and restart it (this may take a few minutes so don’t panic).

8 ) Your Xperia S should now be updated
Congratulations, your Sony Xperia S should now be running Jelly Bean firmware!

  • Shaun M

Hey, I’m in the UK and the update isn’t available for me using the official update service, is the ‘Global generic’ update in English?

  • the_black_dragon

I Don’t know WHAT Region the Firmware above is, but there is NO Global Firmware..

  • Sam Ouissellat

Seems like it’s just the UK now.

  • cee

too much work. I’ll just wait for the update.

  • Yali AA

Global is just a name, contains every language, just different bloatware.
Firmware from your region may contain alternate bloatware.
Global is still the same as a Regional firmware, so there is nothing to be scared of.
Select your language when you have installed the firmware for first power-on sequence.

  • Yali AA

Its quite easy and fast, you’ll never know when your firmware hits your region.
This process takes 3 min, from start to phone boot-up.

  • http://twitter.com/adeceku alan cavazos

I have a US free Xperia S and I got the update from PCC and it improves my decive, in atnutu the ICS scored 8354 and now with JB scored 8794

  • Ahmed Sammy Mansour

Is it work for Xperia SL ??

my base band number is 8660-AAABQOLYM-314010-28

  • Mercast

You should note that with this method you’ll lose all of your phone settings and files. (File sin SD card will not be effected)

  • Arokhantos

I’m 100% sure people with xperia s known how to install an update, else they would’t be complaining so much in masses.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tgbastos Thiago Guerreiro Bastos

only if you let Wipe DATA and etc checked.

  • motze
  • Ivan Knezevic

At my XS, in flashtool last message is “Device is connected in flash mode”, and nothing happen after that. Then my phone quit from flash mode, and turn on, in flash tool says “device disconnected”. I did everything like in instructions, but that doesn’t work. Any help?

  • Ivan Knezevic

Nevermind, Sony PC Companion has detected update anyway.

  • Dragoslav Zeljko

gdje se nalazis? Kad ti je detektovao update? Ja sam iz bosne i jos cekam ali nista.

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

is this firmware support arabic ?

    i mean full arabic ?

  • Ivan Knezevic

Kiseljak. Ali ima problema, ne pokazuje mi notification bar, ne mogu promjenit lock screen wallpaper, nekako je malo i usporen, nema small apps, ne znam koji je klinac :S

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

    does it support arabic?

  • Yali AA
  • Alex

In spain the update is ready from pcc Yeah !
    enjoy the new fw. guys

  • Neeraj

same here. i tried flashing it and it stuck on “Device connected in Flash Mode” and then “device disconnected” and the phone starts charging up. tried many times but still the same error. Checked USB debugging and unknown sources many times but no luck.

  • Yusuf

Max number of downloads wtf i haven’t even downloaded yet fucking prick

  • Alex

anyone know if the bootloader is open on this new Fw 6.2.b.0.200

  • LaceeWearsPrada

Still waiting for Ion update :/// I thought it’ll roll out together with the others :( I hope it’ll reach Hungary soon :D

  • KOKALO

can not flash my XS. Does anyone know how

  • KOKALO

    Does anyone know how

  • Neeraj

    having the same problem :(

  • KOKALO

  • KOKALO

    lol nice one sony…fuck :(

  • Ivan Knezevic

Uradite Restore. Upravo sam uradio i sve ima :D

  • KOKALO

    just great… :(

  • Herman

“Device connected with USB Debugging off”
How about you turn that on first, then try again?

Also, make sure you’ve installed all drivers correctly.

  • KOKALO

ivane za koga si govorio restore za mene ili ovoga dragoslava?

  • Herman

Yeah we do. It’s explained above…

The only thing missing (or maybe I’ve read too fast) is that you should enable USB Debugging mode under Developer Options.

  • Shaun M

Thanks for that, I’ll give a go tommorow if there is no risk then :)

  • Ivan Knezevic

Kome vec treba, ako dobije slican problem kao sto sam ja. :D

  • KOKALO

nemam taj problem nego imam problem sa flashtool-om nece da odradi instalaciju

  • KOKALO

    yes i turned on

  • Neeraj

Well we did that but its still showing the same error

  • Yusuf

Help! In step 6, the instruction says ‘Press and hold the volume down button while plugging the USB cable into your Xperia.’ but the picture says press the BACK button. Which exactly is the right one? Back or volume down?

  • Herman

Have you also installed the “flash drivers” as well, from the list of drivers? You have to scroll all the way down. You know, where you select Xperia S drivers as well.

It does seem as if your phone won’t stay in flashmode or something.

I made that mistake once, I was looking for something so simple.

  • Alex Lacerda

Someone know the difference between “LT26i_6.2.B.0.200_GenericDE” and “LT26i_6.2.B.0.200_WORLD”? I think DE means Deutch, but I don’t know. I’m brazilian.

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

the back button for arc s…

    volume down button for XS

  • het lapasia

m also facing the prb as urs….guys plz any1 helpp!!!1

  • Vandermonde

Same on my PC. Works on my Mac…

  • Alex Lacerda

You need to press volume down.

  • KOKALO

I checked whether they have drivers for flashtool-devices = CHECK DRIVERS-

List of devices writes me that it is installed, and below that says list of fastboot devices-NONE …

  • jj

Google now microphone doesn’t work… Everything else is buttery smooth.

  • Ivan Knezevic

Ja sam preko Sony PC Companion.

  • KOKALO

Can i select all of drivers from the list???

  • KOKALO

meni jos nema preko pcc neznam zasto

  • fjsh

Exactly, DE means from German. The “purest” experience from Sony is when you install the WORLD version, which was obtained from EMMA (the official software from sony). I’m brazilian too, but I live in Chile. Saudades do Brasil !

  • Alex Lacerda

Thanks! I’ll flash it. Wait it appears in PC Companion is a torture!

Bom ver um conterrâneo aqui! Abraços!

  • Yehaa Afandy

    how to root ?

  • victorborgges

    And the apps and contacts?

  • edgar

    same problem! any solution yet?

  • DoucheyTuesday

    Lmao

  • DoucheyTuesday

Global means global, dude. Are you in the globe?

  • DoucheyTuesday

I would totally blame xb if your phone bricks up, peeps… No Absolving Allowed!

  • Yusuf

Yup! Btw, it supports all languages.

  • ARKGT

Question, are all of you getting the notification on your phones or only have to plug the phone to PCC????

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

    r u fucking troll or spam ? what r u exactly?

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

  • SXS

I too have the same problem :(

  • SXS

    Did it work well??

  • Zachary Richard

You’re too scared to do anything, its as safe as sus and pcc, provided you don’t mess around with other options

  • Zachary Richard

Use backup and restore app and when updated restore, however I recommend you to backup in ext ds card and after update you backup all your necessary files to your pc and run a factory data reset and. Also tick am option to erase sd card

  • Andres Caballero

updated via flashtool,at first i kept data so it was laggy, then i did a factory reset and the result was smooth, google now works but i don’t know if you can open it by sliding your finger like in my XZ, i tried but couldn’t…sorry my english,Greetings from Uruguay

  • Zachary Richard

Downgrade to previous rootable version, root and install cwm, then download pre rooted frimware and install from cwm, rooted frimware is in this website, see newer posts in the blog

  • Official Sony

    Quick question.

  • nidou bossy

use a previous version of flashtool cuz this one seems buggy.. im using this version: 0.9.10.1 so stable and i’ve been flashing my XS with it millions of times ;)

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

Sure? If they know how to install an update, they all would’ve installed it since the leak version, but they didn’t

  • Yusuf

Everything will work but you just need the ftf file for your xperia sl (the one provided is for xperia s only)

  • Official Sony

I’m a newbie with flashing and all. What exactly is FTF file?

    http://www.xperiablog.net/forum/resources/categories/xperia-s.19/

Im downloading the 3rd firmware from the top. Will this work?

  • ayub407

  • mk_xperiablog

ok, you are saying clearly that:

“This tutorial does not require you to root your handset nor does it require you to unlock your bootloader. FLASHING YOUR HANDSET DOES NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY”

but in the Flashtool guide you are saying that:

“The flash tool for Xperia™ can only be used for Xperia™ smartphones with unlocked boot loaders” !!!

Now, do I need to unlock my device before using this guid or not ???

  • http://twitter.com/DumaStudetto Duma Studetto

You’ll have to hope someone publishes the official middle east ftf and then you’ll use flashtool to flash the rom again. If this is very important to you, I’d wait for the official update from Sony to show up.

is there anybody who has done and successfully flashed their SL?

  • Yusuf

Make sure to hold the volume down button whilst plugging your phone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

No. Apart from English, German I has even languages like Hindi, Chinese… but no Arabic or Hebrew – WORLD build might have it – did anyone flash that, gyus?

  • marwan

Yusuf in my laptop when I connect my phone in step 4 it says usb debugging off
in my cousin’s laptop it I pass that step but in the step where you turn off the phone I get the message Device connected in flash mode 5sec later the phone disconnect and connects again with USB debugging off message and that’s it nothing happens

the latest Sony flash tool from : http://androxyde.github.io/…. It works perfectly….LOVING MY XPERIA S with the JELLY BEAN <3

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

    no it doesn’t , i flashed the world ftf….

    i wish i didn’t… :(

  • egfahim

bro did u update ur sl with flash tool?? will it work?? i

  • Ecthelion

NP. Welcome in the JB world. ;)

  • Ecthelion

Use older version of flashtool, newest seems to be bugged….

  • Ecthelion

Try install PC Comapnion or SUS…..

  • Ecthelion

Like i wrote: Try install PC Companion or SUS.

  • Ecthelion

Use older version of flashtool, newest one seems to be bugged. :)

  • Ecthelion

Yea, Flashtool 0.9.10.1 works perfectly. I had same problem, but this version solved it.

  • Ecthelion

Yea, of course. U just make force update to official firmware.

  • shiva kakkar

Same happened with me. What I found was to keep waiting for 2-3 minutes and it would directly show the ‘insert cable holding power button down’ animation. I connected it and Voila! It flashed perfectly. (Before this I had already soft bricked my XS trying to update through CWM on a locked Bootloader). So just hold on a minute. It would detect.

  • portug2

If I flash did this will install the kernel, and all the features of the update of pcc

  • portug2

ANother question if i install this and i do repair it will install the ICS from my operator right? Not global?

  • Ecthelion

If u use repair, u just get ur newest firmware – JB. :)

  • portug2

    But not my operator right?

  • Akash Tadmare

i’ve both PCC and SUS instaled in my pc

  • SXS

I have a question. If we install the global version of JB by flashing it and later we receive a bug fix update or any update for SXS, would we receive a notification on our PC companion to officially update it or we will have to do the same flash process to get the update on our phone? Thanks…

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

i think you would receive update notification on pcc….

becuz xperia blog said “it’s official from sony”

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

ohhh , i think the problem it’s win xp :)

i can’t use MTP connections with win xp ….. i think this’s the problem , MTP connection

  • egfahim

same question. how can we update sl

  • SXS

Hmmm I do hope so and hope to receive an update soon because the battery drains real fast…

  • Marius Florian

But do you lose your data?

  • shiva kakkar

You would loose the installed applications, contacts and messages. Though, data on your internal memory (songs, movies, etc) would be safe.

Could it be that the ftf file I've got is corrupted? I'm running Windows 8 64bit.

I have previously flashed my phone to ICS on the same PC. I seem to remember having some issues when I did it the last time, but can't remember how I got round it!

  • chandru155

Can anyone tell me whether this version of firmware supports INDIAN languages(Hindi,Tamil etc) ?

  • SXS

    It supports hindi n bengali

  • Yusuf

Everything will turn out fine, you will still receive updates via PCC/Bridge for Mac. Flashing the FTF file is just force updating your phone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

    me too….

i can’t even charge it at full state !

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

did u do these things before start flashing?

“2) Enable ‘USB debugging’ on your handset: Settings > Developer options

    3) Enable ‘Unknown sources’ on your handset: Settings > Security”

  • SXS

    Thanks…That helped ;)

  • Yusuf

    Yes.

  • ahmed

can anyone put a link of 6.2.B.0.200_Global for Xperia Sl (LT26ii)?

  • ahmed

    should i unlock the bootloader?

  • Yusuf

No need to. It should work even with a locked bootloader.

  • ahmed

If the firmware has some problems can I go back to ics without unlocking the bootloader?

  • Yusuf

Of course. You can go back to ICS by flashing an ICS FTF file by following the same procedures mentioned above.

  • ahmed

    Thank u

  • Mahmmod Lusta

Arabic no , Hindi no and bengali no with LT26I 6.2.B.0.200 world.tft

Guys Please remember to disable your antivirus program. If you enable, it will block your flash process. Worked fine on me the flash tool & the update. Cheers

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

i think so…unless you figured out how to use MTP connection with win xp

try another computer with win 7 , might work
also did u do these things before flashing the ftf?

“2) Enable ‘USB debugging’ on your handset: Settings > Developer options

    3) Enable ‘Unknown sources’ on your handset: Settings > Security”

  • Martin

Yes, have done both of these. 4th line of log shows that debugging is on and I’ve always allowed unknown sources in order to use Amazon app store.

  • esf

IS there a WORLD JB for flasching ACRO S??? i cant find it…

  • Maziar

hi there. may i ask which drivers need to be installed on my xperia s? is it the ‘xperia s drivers for ics’ or ‘xperia s, xperia nx, xperia acrod HD drivrs’?. will also need to install Flashboot and flashmode drivers?

  • Zachary Richard

Makensure all the drivers ate installed properly, there is no pcc or sus running in background, and also check if your downloaded ftf is not corrupt or for your device only

  • Zachary Richard

I meant internal storage, then backup all your data from storagr to pc and do the reset

  • Zachary Richard

Click on the black lightning icon and select flashmode and secect the frimware from the popup

  • Zachary Richard

Download flashtools new one and install its drivers

  • Zachary Richard

I guess so, make a backup into your internal storage

  • Zachary Richard

It Is a reported bug and will be resolved shortly in the next update

  • Zachary Richard

OK, have now successfuly flashed my phone. I used an old Windows 7 laptop. However, initially I got exactly the same error. I then ran the Flashtool-drivers.exe file (even though I had PC Companion installed) and tried again. This time it worked. Am now wondering if I’d run the Flashtool-drivers.exe program on my Windows 8 laptop if it would have also worked.

Flashed-it, worked great. There were some tense moments when the progress bar froze for two or three minutes. All in all, the flash process took about 4-5 minutes, and the restart of the phone another 3-4 minutes.
I did not had the options to Wipe or Exclude anything, so it was a clean install.
The only thing is that now the PC Companion does not recognize the phone being connected although SnapPea does.

can someone if the pc companion detect the phone after flashing ??can we restore the backed up data??

  • Martin

I used the xperia s drivers for ics and it worked for me. Didn’t install any other drivers.

  • Martin

If you make sure you uncheck the wipe data checkbox, then you should still have all your data and apps intact after flashing. That’s what I did and it was fine for me.

  • droidlover

can someone please tell me that if the pcc detects the phone after flashing??if yes,can we restore the data includind the games and apps??
    thanks in advance!!

  • chazz25 XS

I tried everything though it didn’t work. I also tried disabling enforcing driver signature in Win8. This worked for drivers installation though still the same result in Flashtool. Later that day PC companion finally said that update has been found but the PCC still failed to flash it. It simply failed to connect to my phone in flash mode.
The Sony Bridge for Mac on my Macbook did the trick.
So we have to find out how to flash manually using windows 8 x64.

  • chris

after that message unplug your phone, then an animated image will come up with instructions to connect the phone (the animated image will be an SE X10i), plug your mobile whilst that x10 image is up with the volume button down and then the flashing will begin

Yes it will detect but the data you have to do a backup. The restore just save the album.

  • namusa

For that, disconnect the phone, launch PCC, click on how to connect and then do as it asks you to. It’ll detect.

  • namusa

So, a new version of JB is going to come out in sometime – as said by Sony. So, the ones who have flashed will get it as a notification? Or do they flash again ?
