Sony ‘Honami’ flagship pictures leak

by XB on 27th June 2013

in Rumours, Xperia Z1

Sony Honami_1We recently saw the first purported image of the Sony H2 flagship device, codenamed Honami. Well some more live pictures of the handset have been leaked. The rear of the handset looks similar to the leak we saw earlier this week with an infra-red sensor sitting next to the camera lens and LED flash. The handset looks very similar to the Xperia Z but with a metal (aluminium?) frame instead of glass fibre polyamide and what looks like a speaker grill at the bottom.

Other features we noticed is some dock pins that are very similar to those seen on the Xperia Z Ultra. Perhaps Honami will also be compatible with the DK30 magnetic charging dock that we reported on earlier? The 3.5mm headphone jack sits at the top, with a flap for the microSD memory card slot on the side and a dedicated camera button. There also appears to be holes for a lanyard towards the bottom right of the handset. Honami is rumoured to sport a 20MP camera sensor as well as the Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2.2GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 330 graphics. We’ll bring you more news on Honami as we have it.

  • Kazuo Sat?

    awh yeah!!!! nice
Camera is disappointing though, was expecting it to use a huge sensor, G lens etc.
    what happened to that?!

  • atWidget

Ok, the XZ S800 is the Honami…

  • Felipe Pimenta

Looks nice. Probably my next phone.

  • SX-Fan

This would make everything perfect. Having same specs as SX-ZUltra but with Flash Led and Camera button. Fantastic

  • Ambroos

It was a stupid fake rumour. It still could be a bigger sensor and a G lens, but you can’t expect anything anywhere near compact camera size in a phone this thin.

  • Kazuo Sat?

I’m still hoping for a camera centered phone with attachments and a huge sensor, There is a prototype where the camera takes up most of the back panel floating around,
    I’m hoping Honami = Z2
    ????= full on camera phone

  • Kazuo Sat?

A stupid rumour from trusted sources, who were right about all the specs of the Z months before it came out? -.-
I’m thinking there are 2 phones, the updated Z (this one) and the camera phone.

  • Jan

not same cuz awesome and scary 6.4 ” big screen

  • Ambroos

If you’re talking about randomuser on Esato: He gets things right but he gets things wrong too. He didn’t appear to know much about Honami.

  • Meh

    I don’t like the back.

  • yann

i thinks its not honami. this a XZ 800 with xenon, honami is an other phone.

  • zymo

  • Herman

The camera size just doesn’t please me.
I wasn’t expecting a PureView like camera, but at least a sensor a lot bigger than Sony’s current models. This only looks a tiny bit bigger than the Xperia Z’s camera. And if they do cram those 20 Megapixels in there, low-light is going to suffer horribly.

Come on Sony, impress me. Luckily it’s just the outside we’re looking at. The camera may still be great.

  • zymo

I was expecting a device to compete with Nokia Lumia EOS and Galaxy S4 Camera, but instead we just get an updated Xperia Z with a bigger bezel.

  • Timothy

Yeah the camera doesn’t fit right with me, the speakers on the bottom is smart, and so is the dedicated camera button. The choice for the new backing could be that it doesn’t scratch as easily as the Xperia Z. Trilimunious Display, and X-Reality, and all this other good stuff, I feel a little sad that I bought the Xperia Z, instead of the i1.
Kind of hard to not want to buy this powerhouse of a phone, even when you already have the Xperia Z.

  • AA

Again, this does not impress me at all….

  • Phat-t

The back looks like a case, atleast I hope its a case…

  • MrWest

Reminds me to much of Xperia Z, should have changed design.

  • zed

still, I would like to buy ZR, Sony…

  • Dacha

  • Phat-t

Here’s another leak of the back that has a bigger camera len

  • roeshak

Have to say this looks more like the z refresh. Rumors about Sony devices are never this far off the mark

  • Ghareeb Saeed

As well this is cant compete with the big sharks like EOS N S4 I’m very disappointed!!’

  • moogoo

that’s a concept render.. not an actual leak. :/

  • SonyFan

3rd photo looks like xperia v…
If this is the honami…then i will be frustrated….
To be honest…sony could make better designs…this one looks one of the worsest from the xperias

  • Mac

Can’t be honami with that camera lens. As u guys said it must be the Z+ /ZS/Z 800 or what it’s going 2 be called.
    I like the new connectors!

  • SonyFan

If this is the Honami, i will be really disapointed about the camera. I was expecting a bigger sensor. But maybe it’s not the Honami at all, there is still a hope.

  • miams

He say “I think” … And you ask for source ??!!
    I agree with him

  • Phat-t

yea, I hope it isn’t the real deal either

  • Mozole

Why is the camera close to the sides, makes it easier for your finger to get caught on the picture when taking one, centered camera is better in my own opinion, and layout wise looks better to me.

  • paul_cus

Cool…I’m going to go ahead and stick with the ZL.

  • testor

i think this is just an xperia z refresh.

honami is tipped to be camera centric and thicker so this can’t be the one.

  • harvey

what is the white square in the corner??? someone have a idea??

  • XperiaFan

for me, its not honami but a refresh of XZ with design XZU. i think Sony put the Honami in other categorie.

    Smartphone —> XZ / HTC One / GS4 / Optimus G Pro

Phablet —> Note 3 / XZ Ultra / Ascend Mate / HTC One Max

Photophone —> Galaxy Zoom / Honami / Nokia 1020 (Nokia EOS)

  • nnxp

i hope its not honami. normally he must have big sensor Sony G lens + Cybershot + interchangeable lens. but there…

  • Z

If the headphone jack not covered by the flap, that’s mean this phone is not water resistant? What the thing beside camera button? The speaker grill is very large, so I expect its sound quality is better than Z. But overall design, I still prefer the Z still the most gorgeous good looking phone.

  • Felipe Pimenta

Just like Z Ultra and Galaxy S4 Active, there is an coating, I think, that is water resistant to open headphone jacks.

  • Felipe Pimenta

  • Thanh

It seems like Sony will unveil this flagship smartphone on August 5 according to the teaser.

    Probably just a cover to

    1. The sensors

    2. The model number.

#2 makes more sense if you ask me…

  • metcarded

Looks like there is a cover of some sort with the rear shot which is covering part of the lens to make it look smaller. So that so called render picture which shows the big ass sensor at the back, might actually be real.

  • Rizky Maulana

    it that honami ???
    i mean just it ??

    meh -_-“‘

  • metcarded

I think it’s real. Look at the article picture showing the back of the phone. There is a cover on the back which is blocking most of the lens, and everything else about this ‘render’ matches with the pictures at the top.

  • Robert Szombati

Sony, please equip this with the s-master audio chip and I’ll buy!

  • nidou bossy

    what’s the s-master audio chip?

  • nidou bossy

looks like Sony are not just baking… but there is a big feast coming up SOON!

  • nidou bossy

great conclusion. Thus, the Honami H1 would be categorized in all these classification and will compete all the damn flagships from 4″ to 20″

I might also call it , is an ASS KICKER for all Galaxy on earth!

  • nidou bossy

The Honami H1 will make all the Galaxies disappear from earth!!!

  • faysal

i think by the time this comes out camera might just change… plus what i heard from sonyalpharumour is that they will be using new JPEG algorithme (software) on honami, which will be used by sonys alpha camera too. so this might just be a good sign.

  • Rizky Maulana

    reallynice word ………… “photophone”

    wow awesome XD

  • Tutzu

The back looks more like it has a case.

  • Looks like LG too me

  • Felipe Pimenta

This is a render. The By: Sponse there make that obvious. Also, I saw the guy posting it somewhere else and said it is his render.

  • hans

Render does not make it untrue though, Sony themselves do a rendering too before they created the device. Maybe the person is one of Sony’s employee who knows ;) From the looks of it, it does look legit.

No way Honami is going to be released in H-2. It is updated X-Z. The real camera phone is set for release in H-1 2014.

  • ManRaj

Amazing phone, I like how it looks!!
Just Awesome !!! If you see carefully then the 1st, 2nd and 3rd photo shows that Honami’s sides are metallic and are of grey/silver colour , where as in the 4th photo, it seems like its all black, but it can’t be, that has to be the case only. the camera button and the sides look ugly with the case.

    (Q. Speaker at the bottom? If that’s the speaker, then +1 on the awesomeness from my side :D)

Indeed it is, someone who has seen this phone personally said that the back of the phone is covered. Maybe there’s something Sony want to keep as a ‘secret’. A carbon fiber back with a Cyber-Shot logo maybe? I just hope it is a Cyber-Shot smartphone with the new camera algorithm.

  • mike ross

I agree with you.. this is the updated version of xz. honami well be set on stage on early 2014 to be the flag bearer for sony.

  • fried_egg

that camera lens is in completely the wrong place. if you have serious camera features then you need to be able to hold it, and you will have your finger over the lens half the time

  • zymo

dude, he has edited his post. By the time I responded, there was no “I think”, just “This not honami. this a XZ 800 with xenon, honami is an other phone.”

  • Umar Khan

hhahahh nice one ASS KICKER…. I guess i wont be keeping my xperia for that long after all. If Honami is what the speculations are then im selling z for honami

  • Umar Khan

i think it has got another huge speaker at the bottom thus making it 3d surround. look at one of the pics

  • Kenn Do

Look at the pic 4, it really doesn’t look like Honami. I’m getting a little bit disappointed, but anyway I hope it wasn’t the true. We’re just waiting for the right one from Sony, that can make us to believe in what we’re waiting for. Friendly speaking I love the pic from Phat-t so much, can everyone see that pic ?

  • Nayagan

Ready for release IFA 2013 Berlin

  • amt

Why so many stupid comments? This might be just a test mule, nowhere near to finished product

  • Umar Khan

Well now that i have done a bit of research I dont think this is Honami, if Honami is to come with a 20MP carl zeis then the camera size and lens would have to be way more bigger then this one, i guess the cell phone would be much more bulkier then XZ as a 20mp cam would support optical and physical zoom whereby making the lens to move in and out. so i think this is just a refresh version of Z not Honami.

  • ProWeirdo

    Will it have removable battery?

  • Jhonbert Magana

Maybe because we’ve seen EOS and the S4 zoom that we thought bigger sensor and mp should have a large hole at the back. And Sony doesn’t want that design language.

  • Jhonbert Magana

Wait, is that a home button?

  • MG

Remember the leak of Xperia Z and any other past prototype that they are not finished products. Same people that said that xperia Z was ungly, the same people fell in love after official release.
It looks that these leaks are from Sony itself in order to get feedback, hence the case not to show the back of the phone.

  • boosook

And bye bye Xperia Z… you’ve been Sony’s flagship for a couple of month and you will be forgotten like it happened with the S. You will receive Android 4.3 a year late and you will never see Android 5.

  • Babylonbwoy

I know it’s leaked pics but I’m not blown seeing this, doesn’t look really sexy, hope final product will be more appealing…

  • Rob

Can you tell me next weeks lottery numbers too while you’re at it?

  • Carljn

On top? No, probably just a sticker hiding the Sony logo.

  • Babylonbwoy

Nobody went on the source website ? Here is what they says :

“Here are some Sony XPERIA Honami i1 live pics. It will come with Snapdragon S800 and a 20 MP camera with xenon flash (instead of the led shown in the pics).”

I’m not saying they are right, just reporting… Never heard about this blog

  • Rob

I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out how you hold your phone.. I can’t really see any scenario where you would cover the camera lens.. Take a picture of yourself taking a picture so I can visualize it :P

If I hold my phone the way I would naturally hold it when taking pictures in landscape or portrait, I’m nowhere near that area.. Infact I’m closer to the centre where it is on my current phone.. But everyones different I guess

I am not saying it’s always true or false but you can’t really TRUST them even if they say XR5!

so you dont hold your phone, horizontally with your hands to the left and right? if you hold it [ ] with fingers and thumbs holding the corners and then try to put a finger on the screen to use that to focus or take a picture, oh, your other finger is sliding along the edge… and to keep the phone firm you as you touch the front you need to slide a finger behind it… roughtly already where the S has its lens… thats if you are right handed anyway… the lens on the edge or near a corner is

  • Mozole

    what do you mean?

  • boosook

You don’t need to be a fortune teller, just look at what happened with the last 2 flagships: the Arc came out single core when the other flagships were dual, so Sony had to replace it 6 months later with the Arc S with a faster processor. The S came out dual core when the other flagships were quadcore, so Sony replaced it 6 months later with the T with improved specs. In both cases, users had their flagship replaced after 6 months. Sony released two flagships per year, while Samsung released only one.

Same thing holds for the Z: it came out with a 2012 chipset while the others (GS4, HTC One) directly used the newest Snapdragon 600, so Sony will be forced again to update its flagship this autumn. So the Z is, again, a flagship that’s not really a flagship.

Let’s now talk about the software: the Arc/Arc S were released with GB and were updated only after one year to ICS, and the update left much to be desired, it was slow and had some problems. Of course, those phones never saw JB, though they were flagships they were updated only once and after one year. The same happened with the S: it has been updated to JB, well… now! This means one year after JB had been released, what’s more not to the latest release since it received 4.1.2. And it won’t be updated further. It will never see the next major release of Android, if we’re lucky it will get 4.2.2, but it’s not clear.

    Compare with Samsung:

    2011 flagships: GS2 -> JB 4.2.2, Arc/ArcS -> ICS

2012 flagships: GS3 -> JB 4.2.2, will be updated to next major release, Xperia S/T -> JB 4.1.2, will be updated maybe to 4.2.2 if we’re lucky

So, why should it be different this time?

  • Rob

Yes, nobody changes. Everything is static. Entropy is not increasing, and not decreasing.

  • sponse

LET me just tell you that THE flagship S1 from samsung has never seen even an ICS update! so cut the crap!
the ARC and ARC S has 1ghz single core with 512mb
while the S2 is dual core with 1gb, ICS and JB are RAM HUNGRAY, it’s better to stick to GB with these devices.
samsung has released a 1 flagship a year? my i remind you of the GALAXY S4 S600, GALAXY S4 OCTA, AND GALAXY S4 S800?

  • Mac

    Don’t forget the S4 Active :P

  • boosook

The Xperia E has a 1GHz single core cpu with 512mb of RAM, yet Sony released it with JB.

Xperia S has traveled from GB to ICS, but remember that it came out with GB (together with U and P) only because, as usual, Sony was incredibly late, because every other phone had ICS at the time. Read the reviews that were made at the time: all the reviewers pointed out that the phone had GB while every other flagship had been released with ICS.

As to your use of language, I don’t have any “f*cking” problem, I’m an ericsson/sonyericsson/sony user since 1999 and I’m saying things as they are, I’d be the first to be happier if Sony finally decided to change their policy on updates, which currently is “update only if you’re forced and do it as late as you can” so they can sell more new models.

If reading the truth makes you so upset calm down and don’t read this blog, it might be dangerous for your health.

  • boosook

I hope you’re right, the problem is that, until now, I have not seen any sign of change, I’m not talking only about the S, the whole NXT series has been treated this way, the U (which I have) will never receive the JB update and the ICS update has so many lags that most users chose to stay with GB. So I decided that I’ll skip Sony this time. I won’t give them credit anymore: first they must prove me that they changed, then I will buy a Sony phone again.

  • Kazuo Sat?

I’ll admit there are a lot of people faking it, but I am certain there is a camera focused phone coming out, it’s only a matter of time.

  • luiram

Why do all these leak pictures of phones look so dirty o_o

  • Rob

Clearly a matte plastic cover on the front of the device, with airbubbles underneath it.

If you want clean and nice pictures, wait for official announcement :)

  • Kazuo Sat?

The reason for that is that there are multiple prototypes and these phones are prototypes not the final product as well as a few attention seekers who falsely claim to be Insiders etc.

Still there is a lot of info there that turns out to be real you just have to sort the bullshit from fact, I think there is a proper camera phone on the way, I could be wrong but that’s my guess.

Z ultra is Sony’s answer to the note series.
There will be a 4+ inch phone with high specs to take on the Iphone
There will be a camera focused phone to take on Nokia ones and Samsung’s sad attempts at it.
Sony is covering all their bases

  • Carljn

How is it even possible to squeeze that much false information into one comment?
Arc S came out because Qualcomm stopped producing the lower clocked cpu.
The S was released before S3 and One X. There was no dual-core S4 processor yet. And SXS was alot cheaper than the competing flagships. Same thing with the Z. The first S600 smartphones showed up months after the Z. And it would’ve spread the amount of cpu’s Sony need to make software for even broader. I’m glad Sony skipped the S600 and went straight from S4 Pro to S800. The gap is larger and efforts will be more focused.
I’m not even going to bother with SW since only the ignorant fail to realise how great Sony’s software team really is…

  • hocestquisumus

even though sony has made big strides away from proprietary stuff, it’s still a pipe dream to believe it would produce an accessory that works for two handsets. it’s sony. apple could learn from them how to gouge customers on accessories.

Hey Boosook, how about you you keep silent you seem to forget that one Sony brought out all of the stakes from Ericsson, plus moving to there headquarters in Tokyo and than changing key polices and also they are now at the point of been head, and also updated the Xperia Z and Zl to the latest android update and also released the Xperia ultra with the latest Android update and latest hardware with snapdragon S800 and are the first manufacturer this year to do so, and yet Samsung hasn’t updated any of their phones to the latest jelly bean, they even recently announced it has now been delayed for July and HTC is also doing the same thing with delaying the update, so how about you shut it and get off this blog, if you can’t see the recent changes taking place at Sony, then I am sorry to say this, but this is not the right place for you man! ;)

  • boosook

The Arc has been released just one month before the GS2, the S two months before the GS3 and the Z one month and a half before the GS4 (check wikipedia for the exact dates if you don’t believe me).

If releasing 1 to 2 months before means having to use a chipset which is one whole year old (single vs. dual for the Arc, dual vs. quad for the S and the previous generation of the snapdragon for the Z), then there’s something really wrong in Sony’s management.

  • Alvin

    Is that xenon flash?

  • boosook

Sorry, you’re right. That’s one major release ahead of the Arc and Arc S, though.

  • boosook

Why should I keep silent and who are you to decide if this is the right place for me or not? If you don’t like what I say, you may as well skip my posts.

Sony acquired SE in jan 2012. So what? Do you really think that it’s only for the headquarters move?

Wait a few months, than remember this thread when Xperia Z users will be upset because they will be still waiting for the Android 4.3 update that the Galaxy S4 will receive promptly as soon as Android 4.3 will be released (the first roms have already leaked, look on phonearena).

  • you mean after the whole 30 pin connector to thunderbolt shift wasn’t significant enough?

  • Ashley Otu

And yet the Xperia Z users won’t wait long for a update, Sony has updated it to 4.2.2 and is the first non-nexus device to receive it and yet Samsung hasn’t updated the S3 or Note 2 to the latest yet, so just get off here you samsung troll!

  • boosook

What? The S4, Samsung’s 2013 flagship (like the Z is Sony’s 2013 flagship), already had 4.2.2 at launch. The S3 must be compared with the Xperia S, and you know what torment its users had to go through before they could get their long-awaited update to Jelly Bean.

Anyway, we’ll se how Sony treats the Z in the next months, than you’ll tell me if I was right or not.

Btw, I’m an Ericsson/SonyEricsson/Sony user since 2001. I’ve owned an Ericsson T39m, a SonyEricsson T601, W510i and Xperia Mini Pro and a Sony Xperia U. And no Samsungs.

  • Ashley Otu

I understand where you are coming from, but things have now changed Sony is releasing new gadgets early and updates have dramatically improved with quicker releases and staying within the announced time frame, and these 2013 xperia phones are pure Sony phones from the ground up, the NXT and Xperia T,Z,J were all co-produced by Ericsson :)

and the Xperia Ultra is proof that Sony is officially beginning to rise :) and than the Honami or a updated Xperia Z :)

  • Jhonbert Magana

This is what I wanted to say to Sony. Since English is not my native language I can’t express it fully. Seriously, I don’t know why you’re defending the obvious problem. I’m also a fan of Sony and we just want Sony to be the best. x)

  • boosook

Well, you say that Sony’s changed, I say that I haven’t seen any clues of a change for now. So I’d like to buy the ZL, but how do I know that it will be updated to Android 5 (and in a timely manner, not when Android 5 is already obsolete, as it happened with the S)? Truth is that there’s no guarantee.

Clearly, one of us is right and the other is wrong, and you know what? I hope to be the one that’s wrong! ;)

But we’ll have to wait for an year and see how Sony behaves with the Z, when it will be updated to 4.3 and if it will receive 5.0 and when. Only then, we’ll be able to say who was right and who was wrong!

  • Ashley Otu

True I guess, I just hope both our dreams come true and sorry for calling you a samsung troll earlier by the way :)

What you also seem to neglect is the weight of power and money.
Google gives Samsung development time and insight in the android releases. much more than anybody else gets. As Samsung is so big, Qualcomm also team up with them in platform development. So you see, it is very hard for anyone to compete with them.
The only way forward for Sony to really compete is to start excelling in display technology, invest in platform manufacturing and buy Ericsson’s modem development.

If not, they will always be one step behind the big guys. Not necessarily bad, just not as great as them.

Nvm lol thought he was asking about the other thing on top of the phone and yea that isn’t a home button

  • Danny

    How big is the screen?

  • Cristi13

I know this is irrelevant to this article but we are maybe close to the release of the next android version. So to who it may concern

    Look the Honami !
When you the official photo of XZ Ultra (on the left), you looks every differences wiht this photo official of Sony (on the right).

–> a phisical button for APN is present, not on X Z Ultra
–> differences spacing at MicroSD compared to X Z Ultra
–> the button On/Off is surrounded by a black border ; On the XZU, the button is recessed type
–> that you looks the edges of the phone on this pic, you would see that is different to XZ Ultra

for me is the “true” Honami because Sony not put another smartphone on an invitation :) specelly after the announcement of XZ Ultra

But ther is a audio jack in the ad, but not in the leaked images??

  • XperiaFan

yes, but the leaked image, the audio is on top of the smartphone, for me, its a XZ 800 with a APN button + news design. the leaked image looks too Xperia Z, not Honami.

but in the invitation of Sony, this smart are not presented. for me, its Honami :)

  • Roy

Off topic question: Why is the mobile version of this blog using the iPhone theme?? Am I the only one bothered by this??

  • Babylonbwoy

I don’t think, invite says “prepare yourself for a big/or tall (it depend on the context) surprise. The event is about something big so must be ZU.

  • hocestquisumus

as i said… being a sony fanboy i can somewhat relate to changing adapters every ten years or so. but ‘my’ huge company did it with every product they came out with in the past. with their accessories, they are still doing it. but it got SO much better since the debacles that were minidisc, ATRAC or a new cable for every MP3 player for years.

This may be “the fresh” of Xperia Z or “the mini” of Xperia ZU.

WOW! Good observation! Can’t wait till the 4th to find out!! :D

  • koles

Why the sensor is so small? With 20MPx the NOISE will be huge :(
And moreover – no xenon flash at all? Really? :(
Until now Z looks more elegant, and the speaker hole is ugly and unnecessarily stick out! :(
If this will be tru I am disappointed in terms of design :(

  • koles

I hope this is true except LED instead of Xenon flash!

Love EVERY aspect of this phone.
    But DAT HOLE!! =(
Was hoping that Sony could have found a better way to give it that seamless slick look.
Reason I still prefer the look of my XS to the XZ is because of that exposed copper dock point too.

  • Bader Aljedei

what the hell`s with sony repeating the same Z design on every new smartphone !!!
it`s just like they asking the people to watch the same movie over and over with only a few new characters !!!

stupidity live in sony design department … making the power button and the volume button on the right middle side on the handset !!! what the hell was that designer thinking ?
or maybe he had 7 fingers on his right hand so it was easy for him to click on these stupid buttons !

    fucking alien !

first the fuck off, this is not the final release of that leaked pics, the 2nd fuck is that Sony are not doing the same design, and for the fucking 3rd time i tell you.. Xperia Z and Xperia Z Ultra has a different design… 5 – and for the fucking god sake, go check Samsung to talk about the same design.. especially the SIII and SIV… so, this is what fucking called, the same boring design… and when sony do the same design of some phones or flagships , they still look beautiful and creative… Sony are the best in design.

so Shut the FUCK UP and stop complaining like a bitch cuz Sony wasn’t made for fucking alien like you.

  • Bader Aljedei

i don`t wanna discuss the stupidity of sony with a stupid fan boy, let the smart one do the discuss, so SHUT UP !
