wpid-20130828_181514.jpgThe Wi-Fi versions of the Xperia Tablet Z,  model numbers SGP311 and SGP312, are finally seeing the Android 4.2.2 update.  Firmware build 10.3.1.C.0.136 is the update rolling out to select regions right now. The LTE Android 4.2.2 build rolled a while back now so it’s good to see those with Wi-Fi tablets on equal footing.

Thanks to all that sent this in!

Sony xperia Z1 its the best Phone

Release yet. So, how can we say Z1 is the best ever phone?

  • Mac

man I hear you, I finally got my acro s running smooth as it was ment to. But when I bought it I was very close to go for ion. it was cheaper but 2 big for me. But it’s weird dey haven’t said anything about JB fix for ion.

Why did they decide to go through with Google’s moronic guideline of centering the nav keys?

  • Kamil1308

Is there much differance ?? I rooted my and dont know if there is a point updating and losing the root

  • aligamz

It’s not a guideline. Android 4.2.2 is coded that way, with the nav keys centered.

Besides, what’s the problem with it?

  • Kaloyan Stoychev

I’d have thought they could easily customize it, they way they did with the small apps and remote buttons in the previous jelly bean version. The nav buttons are much easier to use on the left where they are within easy reach of the thumb. Same goes for the notifications on the other side. With the New bar you’ve got too much wasted space as well.

This isn’t even counting the new top notifications bar that wastes even more space. In the previous versions everything was neatly consolidated into the bottom bar.

I’m not downloading until this is changed to the old one.

  • Bret Homan

I’m with a lot of other people on the whole not downloading it. The custom UI Sony created for this tablet takes advantage of much of the outside space with shortcuts and remote control/mini apps. Not to mention navigation and notification access both being in thumbs reach.

I understand that 4.2 is coded universally for phones and tablets alike, but that doesn’t make it smart on Google’s part to go that route. Is it not possible for Sony to skin over the default UI much like with 4.1 or what? Lock screen widgets are just not enough to lose the custom UI of 4.1.

  • Kaloyan Stoychev

Right. My concerns were justified. The centered nav buttons are an absolute pain. There are cool new features like lock screen widgets and a new multitasking UI, but totally not worth it.

  • Ben Lim

Same here. My ion display is stuttering whenever I open some apps (especially Opera mini)

  • 3rdflyleaf

I just see a big Galaxy S2. Does Samsung even have a designer?

Android tablets can’t beat iPAD because it UX sucks. I hate Android UI, ugly, messy desultory and outdated look. No deserve to use on tablets at all. Sony and others manufactures should talk with Google about this problem, Android codes should be more openly.

  • Andrew Tan

Finally! Going to update it next week. :)

  • Tech Gospel

Don’t hold your breath. Best bet is to find a root mod that allows you to change the position. I disliked it at first, but change always makes people uncomfortable. It did make it easier to use both my phone and tablet seamlessly since my hand would instinctively go towards the middle and hit the remote shortcut (instead of home) after using my phone.

  • Henners

Any news on if this update sorts out the WiFi performance issues while using Bluetooth? The new UX is a bit of a bummer, but I will be a lot happier with the device if they fix that issue. Makes the tablet almost unusable.

EDIT: Nothing available OTA as of 6:30am 29/8 in the UK.

  • hocestquisumus

Update done in Austria (unbranded). I’m not one of those who resist all change out of principle, but I hate the centered softbuttons. Other than that it’s really good. There’s gotta be a solution on XDA somewhere…

  • Bret Homan

What? Did you take a time machine from 5 years ago? The iPad has the same stale look it has had since its inception. The 4.1 UI on the Tablet Z is very well thought out with almost everything in reach right on the front screen alone.

Also, iPad lacks so much hardware functionality it hurts. No IR blaster, no NFC, no waterproofing and no expandable memory. All for the same price…silly really.

  • Duma Studetto

Is there any way to rotate lock this in portrait mode? Whenever I use the rotate lock it always spins back to landscape mode and forces you to say there. The only way I can find to use portrait mode is to keep rotate lock switched off which is insanely annoying.

  • m sacha

i thought the same thing, but two months later, i dont even use my tablet z anymore…

  • i hate ipad

    Android tablets :
    – capable to take the advantage on wide array of processors (Snapdragon 800, Intel, Tegra, etc)
    – UX sucks? Then use other launcher. Can you change your iPad’s launcher? No. Can you customize it’s icons? No.
    – Outdated look? Tell you, iOS looks are more boring and outdated. iOS 6 ui looks like Android 2.1 and iOS 7 ui looks bitchy..
    – wide array of developers on xda-developers.

    iPad tablets:
    – boring gray slate
    – no IR/NFC/waterproofing/interdevices bluetooth connectivity/expandable memory/standard MSC connectivity/many more
    – no custom ROM

  • Michael Hofmann

I don’t mind the centralized nav bar that much, and I actually prefer the new notifications bar. I like being able to customise my quick settings. However the dock for the small apps is now in the recent apps menu ala Xperia phones, which is irritating.

  • Meatcan

It wasn’t OTA for me either I had to download it via PC Companion.

+100. We find the same design in Galaxy family. And, Galaxy’s design was adopted from aiphong.

UX is different depending on which manufacturer it is. None of them (bar Nexus) use stock Android UX.

Sony should release another update for Xperia Z to improve camera performance.

  • Babylonbwoy

Even the last HTC has the same design for me, replace Samsung with HTC in the top and it’s the same stuff.

  • Babylonbwoy

Though that was a good thing but I have to recognize using it that it was better before.

Notif bar in middle top is ugly, remote control gone I considered it gadget but it really useful at home controlling everything from the same place, soft keys centered not useful too, etc).

  • Henners

Thanks for that. Just downloading it now through the PC Companion.

  • sonytablet user

I’ve updated my tablet Z wi-fi , however , it seems that the latest sony media apps are not included?
The versions of these media apps in the tablet Z are not the same as in Xperia Z.

I just noticed that Sony added somewhat the same keyboard functionality as the Z Ultra.
Kudos to SONY for adding it!

that may be the reason I don’t care gettin no tablet. Cuz I really like my phone and I got my laptop. that’s all I need.

  • fuckedyourmom

yeah, together with your mom! lol

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

The UI was coded that way by Google. So Sony had to follow it.

  • bet1001

Remote control is an App – it is still there, create a shortcut.

  • bet1001

Better get writing to Google then – they forced the centre Nav buttons on all developers.

  • Babylonbwoy

I know it’s still there but not at the same place…there’s even another one for tablet on play store.

  • sony1

    Only sony lol samsung:))))

  • Jesús López Sotelo

I really don’t care about the new UI and I love the new floating keyboard.

  • DontUpgrade

First impression feeling is worsen picture quality and poor sound quality, and the sound went sideways rather than towards me. Anyone feeling the same?

  • Michael Ermi

Just got 4.2.2 in the US Tablet Z

  • john

They moved the back key so that now instead of being able to reach with my thumb I have to remove my hand. Ruined the experience!!!!
