Sony D6503 live pictures leak; looks like a Xperia Z1 refresh

by XB on 18/01/2014

in Rumours, Xperia Z2

Sony D6503 Leak_3Who says Sony leaks are a thing of the past? Below you will see what are believed to be live photos of the upcoming Sony D6503 handset. The leak comes courtesy of iRimas from XDA, who tags this phone as the D6503 and plans to share some leaks of the UI shortly too. The phone itself looks very similar to the Xperia Z1, although the side bezels are noticeably thinner. The smaller bezel could indicate that the handset sports a slightly larger 5.2-inch display into the same frame size.

The bottom of the phone has three larger speaker holes as opposed to the fine mesh speaker grill found in the Xperia Z1.The micro USB port sits on the left side with what looks like the SIM tray. The right side has room for a micro SD slot. The only other change is the lanyard, which is placed on the left side, rather than the right side on the Xperia Z1.

Apart from that, the placement of all features looks the same as the Xperia Z1, including power button, volume rocker, dedicated camera key, magnetic pins, headphone jack and even the LED notification light. The camera placement on the back of the phone is also the same, although the specs beside the camera do not reveal whether this will be the same 20.7MP sensor as found in the Xperia Z1. So are you happy to see a similar design being used as last year’s Xperia Z1? Does this new model excite you? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

Not so “premium” look as Z1,

  • 3rdflyleaf

    O M G

  • Ghareeb Saeed

    :/

  • cachanilla86

Screen looks good despite this being a test mule.

  • solidpig

Still, that bottom bezel. It’s not that bad though.

  • xperiaDROID

Please don’t tell me that this is the Z2. But since it’s model number is D6503, it must be the ZL’s sucessor, and the Z2’s model number must be D6603.

  • Sami Mrabet

why do u call it edge- to – edge display? looks the same as Xperia Z

  • hansip

i believe this will be the Z2.. But still some light bleed around the display, seems like it is still on the old style of display :|

  • Topher Gimeno

At this point of time, the viewing angles looks nice :-)

  • Sami Mrabet

Haha relax, its just a prototype ;)

  • xperiaDROID

How can you judge the viewing angles when the screen is black and has white words?

  • AA :P

why does the top and bottom bezel keep growing ? at least the angles seem like it is. so even a 5 inch screen will have 5.5inch chassis. one of the ends could be shorter

  • saif

Every pre finished device looks like that. When it will be finalized, you will be amazed.

Source : past experience and Sony’s expertise.

  • jumbo3220

not edge to edge for me ,,but the screen is IPS for sure.

  • Topher Gimeno

The letters and words are still readable.

  • XperiaBlog

Fair enough, it was difficult to get a real sense when first posting as the shots were taken from an angle rather than head-on. This gave the impression that the bezels are thinner than they perhaps really are. We’ve changed the title to better reflect what we believe we have here.

  • Chris

If it’s really Z2, I will keep my Z1 for a bit longer

  • Jaywalker

How about silver for color? Like Xperia S.

  • hansip

Well i am as relax as i can be, just stating some observatory conclusion.. Ah too much hate for that conclusion though lol.

  • Ben Ling

    Xperia Blog,you should mention this…

The metal frame that leaked on November 2013,it’s the exactly same this.

  • Marinko Agic

    It is prototype of Z1

  • techielover

IPS Display i guess from now on lol!!

  • Bob

I agree, but if this is the new zl, I’m a bit disappointed. The old zl had ridiculously small bezels and a unique design. This doesn’t quite match up with its large top and bottom bezels and similar design to z1, or perhaps that’s a good thing…

  • Pingback: Új Sony mobil szivárgott ki - jó minőségű képek! - Sony Xperia Blog()

  • Amir

i don’t think it’s possible to make edge to edge design with a waterproof smartphone. have mercy on the engineers. GUYS, ITS A WATERPROOF PHONE, WAKE UP. I TOO WANT A THINNER BEZEL BUT MAYBE TECH IS STILL TOO EARLY FOR THAT. on a positive side, it’s got the bezel to display ratio of the xperia z, so they listened to the criticism! i want to see exposed micro usb and much bigger speaker grill – this is what i miss from looking at these photos.

  • jumbo3220

me too don’t care about the bezel.. just said it’s not looking edge to edge coz the post title says it has a edge to edge screen :D

  • 12

    the bezels are thinner exactly

  • Colby Leong

The notification light looks bomb, while the the bezels look a bit smaller, but there really isn’t anyway to tell from the angles the pictures were taken. I hope this isn’t the highly anticipated Z2. However if this is indeed the Z2 Kaz must be pissed about leaking info.

  • Bob

Hey xperiablog I think the exact same phone was shown on the Sony Xperia website with their new smartband…

  • Bob

    This is the photo

  • XZR Owner

    Crash detected!
I think it is WP BSOD!

  • Sami Mrabet

    that is Z1 compact

  • Bob

    Oh yeah… Whoops!!

  • Bob

Actually wait, look at the size compared to his hand, the placement of the front camera and the bezels, it’s definitely not the Z1 Compact

  • Zen

the top bezel is contributed by the huge camera sensor. bottom bezel is to make things look balanced

  • Amir

what is sony’s site is obviously clear as the sky just the Z1. no need to be a nuclear scientist to notice that…

  • kidy973

It would be interesting to see a leak about the D2303 too

  • P9

    Z1 aluminium vers?

  • Bezzel

The sides of the phone.. looks reaaly applish =(
Other than that, loving the overall design ;P Especially the bezels =D

  • Christian

Im just waiting to upgrade my Xperia v to sonys next flagship, thats why i wont buy xperia z1! But i really like the look of z1 so this is ok for me!

  • Amir

i really REALLY hope that the next sony flagships won’t have shatter film or any other film on the display. hate those films.

  • XperiaFan10

Bob has a point, the phone in the picture has tiny side bezels and looks just like the D6503. Maybe they were using it just to test the new lifelog app etc.

  • Amir

seems like the same strategy as in 2013. 2 flagships. one at MWC, one at IFA. D6503 is a sidekick.

Why would a prototype Z1 have a newer codename than Z1?

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

I’m not sure it is. If you read the lines underneath “data/media/0/” that is Android and if it were a WP device, there should be a windows button, there isn’t one.

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

This is probably “Z1s” (the REAL Z1 refresh and not the T-Mobile Z1s) that esato Xperia 2014 leaks mentions.
    Either Z1s or Z2

  • Alphons

Might skip that compact after all… :) Looks promising!

  • Sami Mrabet

i´m not complaining, i like bezels too, but just pointing out that its not edge-to-edge

  • Alfonso

What hardware can it have? As I understand snapdragon 805 isnt out yet so there is not anything better than 800 out yet. Seems strange to release a new flagship model with same hardware as old model.

  • Mirrorpurple

Damn it, should have waited for this

  • zairolafzal zainal

    The design getting more refined.

  • Abdul Ghani
  • M Usman

I’m happy with my z1 as it is. I believe it doesn’t require a refresh so soon. The only handset I will keep for my two year contract as I see no faults in it.

  • Lunkz

The flip cover looks cheap… I hope it’s going to be fixed in the final version.

  • kust0r

Honestly, such a beauty! I’m so envy of Zfamily owners for that awesome mag charging connector…

  • roeshak

Well it seems Sony can’t yet find a way to engineer a waterproof device without encasing it in a large body. The Z wasn’t too bad on the bezel front though.
If this is this year’s ZL, it must mean that the Z’s successor will be even bigger. They want to really watch this big phone business because their competitors will all have something smaller and more manageable in the market. I don’t think the S5 will be anywhere near this big.
Good to see a better display panel on there though.
The novelty of waterproofing is wearing off and won’t have the same impact it did last year. They shouldn’t sacrifice size for waterproofing. Not to this extent. The G2 has a similar display and is just as big as the Z is. Sony need to watch this indeed because it could all so easily unravel. They’re a long way behind the two big players apple but most importantly Samsung. They can’t afford to keep releasing phones that keep attracting immediate criticism for one thing or another.
I think the over arching principle that should guide manufactures when creating larger screen devices is scaling down the size of the chassis. I’m not convinced waterproofing is a strong enough reason to deviate from this principle. The bezels on Samsung and LG devices get smaller by the year and I think others need to follow suit. Particularly with the large screen phones.

  • Frenzy Austin

Don’t forget a space for shutter button. Imagine using the shutter button on a phone like G2 single handed. The bezel is great for people who want to take photo single handed like taking selfies.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kiratron Megatron

That immediate criticism comes from people that seemingly hold sony to this ridiculously high standard. shortcomings apple and samsung make apparently aren’t allowed to be made by sony.

  • iKushtyy

Seeing as Sony seem to be doing bi-annual flagships (why I don’t know, one is enough), it makes sense that this is the Z2. Looks like it’s time to chop in my Z1 before it is worth £1 (been wanting to anyway, the touchscreen is doing my nut in).

Also, the Z2 better have a better LCD panel, and Sony better have fixed the erratic touchscreen on the Z2, or I’ll go back to iPhone. I love my Z1, but the screen panel is shocking for such a high-end piece of kit, and the touchscreen, don’t get me started. :@

  • Pingback: Sony Xperia Z1 successor with slimmer bezels leaks | New Mild()

  • brapi

Yeah touchscreen is really crap. I think they should stick with the z’s plastic frame. Alu frame or paint on it is starting to chip off

  • roeshak

The trouble is, Sony makes mistakes that stand out. For example releasing flagship devices with below par display panels suffering from poor viewing angles. A problem no other manufacturer had and that’s going back a few years. Today, it’s bigger bezels when others are reducing theirs. It’s a very risky move. One certainly that will attract a lot of negativity. I think Sony would have been better off keeping the ZL series non waterproof just so they have a compact big screen offering on the market.
I return to what I said before, I seriously doubt that waterproofing will convince that many people to pick a much larger than average device especially when it comes to phones which they’ve got to carry around always.
In my opinion they’re slowly creeping back into a position of making phones for their fans. Trouble is, their fanbase is small in comparison and they need to reach out to users from across the divide. I think this big phone business will hinder rather than enhance their chances of achieving that. I could be wrong, we’ll just have to wait and see but it’s certainly a risky move especially for a company that’s trying to make a comeback. I think a bit more conformity is needed on Sony’s part. They’re doing a bit too much in their own way ignoring market expectations.

Dude, the SHATTER FILM IS A BAD JOKE. A SCRATCH NIGHTMARE, IT DOES NOT PROTECT THE PHONE, IT MESSES WITH THE DISPLAY VISIBILITY, IT DOESN’T FEEL AS GOOD AS THE GLASS. I COULD WRITE MORE REASONS, BUT THIS IS ENOUGH. RIDICULOUS.

  • Frenzy Austin

But rear button are really weird and inconvenient in most scenario.

  • Feanor

The lower bezel is actually good for not having to strain your thumb while pressing the lower right of the display. The upper bezel is most likely because Sony cannot fit the enormous camera sensor directly behind the screen panel without making the device unusually thick. I am not so sure that waterproofing is what makes these bezels.
Anyway, I agree with you that Sony gets such a bad critisism for these bezels that it’s risky again to go this way, though I must say that the 1cm that the Z1 is taller than a Samsung is rather laughable amount and it hardly has any negative impact in ergonomy. If people can carry around a Galaxy Note, they can carry around a Z1 too. But in a way you are right, once the rumour spreads, you cannot stop it. Now Sony have put themselves in this situation.

  • Pingback: Neuauflage des Xperia Z1 auf Fotos aufgetaucht()

  • roeshak

But the galaxy note has a 5.7 inch display. That easily explains its size to the consumer. The Z1 on the other hand has a 5 inch screen and just looks big.
The truth is, the galaxy note looks like a compact phablet while the z1 looks like a large 5 inch phone. That’s damaging I think to Sony.
The waterproof feature is a great insurance policy but that’s all it is mostly. Something that’s really good to have just in case, and not a feature you make use of regularly.
I just don’t think there’ll be endless rows of people cueing to purchase large devices because of waterproofing. Last year, it was novel and made waves but it will not carry the same significance this time round.
    Very risky business indeed!

Well that’s something most people never consider in this new unexpected craze for Aluminium. It only looks good when it comes out of the box. After a few months, it’s covered in ugly scratches and dents. I work with iPhone 5’s so I know first hand just how much of a stupid material it is in phone construction.
I’ll second that all the way, give me the Z’s design any day over all this Alu bullshit.

I don’t in my ignorance know why Sony would release another Z1 with a few minor changes either only months before the 805 UHD capable processor out there mainsteam.
Why does Sony insist on making really ‘long’ smartphones. This criticism has been around for a couple of years now and still they do nothing.

  • Volmit

  • Ney

If the back of the phone is matte, I believe they got rid of the biggest disadvantage of this design! That would be awesome. Still, the phone should be the same size as Xperia Z imho. Those new Xperias are getting too big…

More importantly, why people care so much for an edge-to-edge screen? Unless the touch area is kept away from the borders, it would be a pain in the ass to hold the phone and not inadvertently touch the screen. My hands are medium sized and I already have difficulties to operate the SP with one hand.

The Sony Xperia Z is C660X and ZL is C650X, so the D650X can’t be Z2 as the D660X is Z2. and remember last year the ZL was leaked more thn Z, its the same now…and Z2 has a 5.2″ Quad HD screen, if not it will lose to LG G3 and SG5 because they’ll have a Quad HD screen
