Xperia Tablet Z2 specs leak: a thinner and faster successor

in Rumours, Sony Tablet, Xperia Z2

Sony-logo-wallpaperThe alleged specifications of the upcoming “Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet” has leaked courtesy of @evleaks. The tablet is expected to have model number SGP521 (for the LTE version) and codename Castor. We have compared the specifications of the Xperia Tablet Z2 and Xperia Tablet Z in the table below, but essentially not much has changed.

Obviously Sony felt it hit onto a winning formula with the Xperia Tablet Z and therefore the successor mainly brings a more powerful chipset (2.3GHz quad-core and 3GM RAM) and a very thin profile. The Xperia Tablet Z2 will be just 6.4mm in thickness, which is marginally thinner than the Xperia Z Ultra (6.5mm) and over 1mm thinner than the Apple iPad Air. This will certainly be one desirable piece of kit.

We would also expect the Xperia Tablet Z2 to have a higher IP certification than the Xperia Tablet Z (IP55/IP57). A dust and water resistance certification of IP55/IP58 is very likely. The Xperia Tablet Z2 will launch with Android KitKat, but the older Xperia Tablet Z will also receive KitKat at some point down the line.

Similarities between the old and new Xperia tablets include a 10.1-inch (1920×1200) display, 8MP/2MP cameras, 6000mAh capacity battery, internal storage starting at 16GB and a microSD memory card slot.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is one of our favourite Xperia devices from 2013 and this new tablet looks like it will continue in similar vein. It takes what made the Xperia Tablet Z successful and makes it more powerful and thinner. This is a formula that Apple has been using for many years with great success. We can’t wait to hear more details, which hopefully will be in a week’s time at MWC.

    Faster Stronger Higher!

  • 16:10

oh sony you shouldn’t have <3

  • Tech Gospel

LIKE! LIKE! LIKE! THINNER!?!?! WOW!!! I love how thin my Tablet Z is already!!!! Hope <7mm becomes standard on their phones too!!!!

  • wei147

nice looking 7inc model for it!

  • Mohammed Khired

well it’s not fair to call it Z2 …

  • gusssi

    Still only 6000 mAh :(

  • Berg

It has been plenty on my Tablet Z, and if the leaked specs are correct the Z2 will be running a more power efficient platform. All in all this seems like a worty successor that I hope to get my hands on shortly after release :)

  • Berg

Yeah, Tablet Z is crazy thin, and Tablet Z2 is going to be thinner than Z Ultra? That’s just insane! :D

  • Tech Gospel

It’s called the Z Ultra! Hahahaha! (yes, I know it’s not quite 7″)

  • Tech Gospel

The whole idea of battery capacity should be what consumers focus on, but rather device efficiency. It’s like cars. Fuel tank capacity shouldn’t be the issue, but over-all range. All a bigger battery does it add weight. If a manufacturer can increase usage time without adding weight, that’s preferred. I would rather they offer a battery case (like the one for the Ultra) for those times when you do need extra capacity.

  • Jiyeon90

    Kinda dissapointed by the battery

  • xperiaDROID

I don’t know, I think I’m gonna get the Xperia Tablet Z, I’m not gonna wait for this one. This will take a long time to be released in countries after being announced.

  • Berg

Which countries? Where I’m from the last few announcements the devices have been available less than a month after.

  • hocestquisumus

I LOVE my TZ. I have been looking forward to a TZ2. But those specs… hmmm… I wonder if that’ll be enough. Guess I’ll have to see it to decide if it’s desirable enough.

I’d have liked one of those 2K displays. I mainly use it as a very large monitor for my NEX camera via WLAN and I can’t have enough resolution ;)

  • Rammstone

Sigh. Looks like a fantastic tablet, except it desperately needs more internal storage

  • xperiaDROID

You’re lucky. Well, I’m from Malaysia and Sony phones will take one or two months to arrive in Malaysia after being announced. I’m not that patient, so I’m not gonna wait for this one.

  • xperiaDROID

I hope Sony will include moving apps to SD card option in their KitKat update.

  • Rammstone

Yes, that would definately help the cause

  • Gitarooman

16:10 screen? Finally someone gets it.

  • Kurt Kobaine

Perhaps they will release the 32gb version after a few months

  • Kurt Kobaine

Where does it mentioned 16:10 screen?

  • Gitarooman

    1920 x 1200 is 16:10.

  • 1920 1200 resolution

  • Michael Hofmann

A QHD screen would have been nice.

  • RealityCheck2013

I would rather it be a bit thicker and have a bigger battery really.

  • shnam

But … but I wanted one having 8 to 9 inch screen

  • Gregor

16Gb internal is low on a tablet with Power specs. 64GB should be standard for a device lik this.

Then I dont understand why they have to be as thin as possible. Better with a few mm more and a big battery.

1440p screen had been nice. But this seems like the tablet I will buy now when my Ipad 2 feels old. Sony makes the best phones and tablets right now,

  • Gregor

Yes. I agree. This should be Tablet Z1.

  • Berg

If you at least wait until announcement then Tablet Z should be cheaper :)

  • Berg

Makes more sense to name it after the platform. Assuming Xperia Z2 is coming as expected, I guess Tablet Z2 will be based on the same hw.

  • z

I agree with you if it’s a phone.

  • hocestquisumus

Thin is good when it comes to the Xperias’ angular design. Thicker would really hurt I guess.

  • pdrito picapiedra

What do you mean by that? Most Android tablets are 16:10, including the Galaxy Note and the Nexus series, it’s by far the most common aspect ratio.

I’d rather have at least one Android manufacturer daring to be different and design if only one model for 4:3… even if that meant being accused of cloning the iPad.

  • redwan2

i want sony xperia z2 not tablet z2

  • Armin Torkashvand

great!! i confused!! what was that near zero bezel photo! what do you think?

  • Timbo1

even the Z2 is based on the Z1 hardware…..internally anyway(rumored to keep the same S800 processor instead of upgrading to the S805)

  • Timbo1

you dont really need anything bigger with the Snapdragon 800 that processor is extremely efficient.

  • Timbo1

its not a tablet but there is always the LG Vu that is a 4:3 phablet.

  • No. 4:3 may die horribly. A terrible, terrible, terrible form factor.

  • pdrito picapiedra

I couldn’t disagree more. A 4:3 ratio offers about %12 more area, given the same diagonal. This makes it much better for use cases such as PDF reading and for browsing full blown websites. I’d not want all tablets to swing to the other side and become 4:3, just wishing for more choices apart from the expensive, ridiculously limited iOS iPad combo.

  • PowerSonic

so, it will be available only from may 2014 i guess, like the tablet z.. announced at mwc, hope tablet z2 comes out early..

  • PowerSonic

doesnt seem to be much of an upgrade.. lets c how much its gonna cost..

  • jonyah

8 inch with these specs would be perfect.

  • Vitali

    1. great 2.nice 3.ok 4.whatever … but then… 11. 6000mah O_O Seriously? Still no improvment? I think it needs at least 8000mah+ …

  • Vitali

It’s 6000mah since their first tablet (Xperia Tablet S), and still not improvments in the battery.. I’m happy with my Xperia Tablet Z :)

  • Marco Sobrevilla

I think 64GB is overkill but you’re right when you say 16GB is not enough. Sony’s OS usually takes up about 4-5GB so that leaves you with 11-12GB of storage for apps. Apps are becoming heavier now so that space would be taken up easier and faster. 32GB should be enough for apps and for anything media related, you can always add an SD Card Slot.

The battery could’ve been bigger. I would have had a case on it anyways at all times so I wouldn’t have cared much for a bit of thickness.

    Well I was waitting better.
The screen resolution didn’t changed, I was expect get a japan display 2K.
16Gb should be overed at last the minimum should be 32Gb.
excepted CPU and memory nothing seem have been improve.
But I hope this time the camera will be great, Ipad is 5MP but the picture is clean ! And the focus allow you to manage the light exposure and see how it look before to take the shot.
That is awsome and for a great compagny like Sony, It a shame to see how Z pad can crap on this part. Unfortunetly this news dont make me wanna buy this Sony pad.

  • xperiafan324

Disappointed honestly, every other manufacturer is putting in 2k re
solution screens, yet sony’s still adamantly using the same old 1200p screen. Yes, it’s an amazing screen, but when reading text, that extra ppi really counts. The ipad air is lighter, has higher ppi, AND a bigger battery. Sony needs to get Sirius about its tablet business too. The s800 itself isn’t all that desireable, so why not just buy the tablet z on the cheap?

With the s805 around the corner, and Jdi’s 12″ 4k screens readying for mass production, I was almost certain that this would be the year that Sony shows everyone out there how to make a killer tablet. :-(

  • rus_media

Sony is always slow about taking advanced technology. Specially on screen. So no question for them ;)

  • rus_media

Tablet Z even couldn’t reach the expected sell. Same will be for that I think.

  • Lunkz

    min. 32 MIN!

Not worth to buy it, it has nearly the same spec. like the old one.

  • marcyff2

Why? I really want to know why? I have seen 2k and 4k tvs and can tell you the improvements are not worth the: Battery consumption, RAM consumption and Space Consumption and not to mention the Absurd price it would be to have 538 ppi on a 10 inch device (538×10 = 5380 that is over 5000pixels).

Be glad the performance hit on your device and the battery drainage would render it unusable.

  • marcyff2

No but really who is putting 2k screens? I wanna know….

    Air doesn’t have 2k, Tabs/Note don’t have 2k, Infinity doesn’t have 2k, HTC ONE Tab(rummored) not to have 2k, Nexus 10-2014 (rummored not to have 2k)

  • Fëanáro Nénmacil

hmmm Wonder if they will ever have an active digitizer to compete with Samsung Note line.

  • Filipp

What a shame! No 300 ppi in 2014!

I have waited for this, but unfortunately I won´t buy it. If the new nexus 10 won´t come soon, the only reasonable choce will be chinese ipads like onda v975m

  • Tjaldid

    The new galaxy tabs

  • Tjaldid

Although shouldn’t there now be the option to auto-hide buttons in Apps instead of always having to look at them

  • marcyff2

Source? The 12.2 is still a 1080p screen

  • Michael Hofmann

QHD on this tablet would be 2560 X 1600. Giving 300ppi, as found on nexus 10. As an owner of an Xperia Tablet Z and 2K monitor I can tell you that in 2K text is crisper, images and videos are more enjoyable, closer to the resolution they were originally shot. The whole experience make you go wow, and it never gets old. If apple and Samsung can manage a >1080p display without sacrificing performance, battery or design then so can Sony.

  • Tjaldid
