Sony officially confirms that the Xperia Z1 Compact has a plastic back

by XB on 18th February 2014

in Problems, Xperia Z1

xperia-z1-compact-2We recently reported on the fact that the Xperia Z1 Compact appeared to have a plastic back, instead of a glass back as seen with its bigger brother, the Xperia Z1. Further proof surrounded the white paper for the device, where Sony removed the reference to “both the front and back are made of durable tempered glass”.

Well Sony has just revised the white paper once again and now explicitly confirms that the rear is indeed made from plastic:

The front side of the phone is made of durable tempered glass, and the back side is made of high-rigid plastic sheet.

We are sure the confusion on this issue lay in miscommunication rather than any purposeful deceit on Sony’s part. Hopefully, this puts the issue to rest. The Xperia Z1 Compact is still a premium phone and the plastic back may even mean it is in fact more resistant to knocks.

Xperia Z1 Compact white paper amended: Confirms plastic rear

Xperia Z1 Compact plastic back

Thanks Silas!

it doesn’t really matter which material….the more important thing is how good it feels in your hands or how premium it feels

  • Juu

    Still looks better than S3.

  • blurb8

Its a great phone, but yeah the plastic back scratches really easily :/

  • Superb

We won’t see any z1 compact back cracking..

  • Martin Ambre

    is this releasing in India???

  • nidou bossy

OMG.. people never gets satisfied and always demanding and complain!

glass or plastic, it’s a sexy and premium phone with a flagship specs!

  • unknown13x

It feels great, thank you :)

  • walker

    nahahaha yep it is !

  • dude

Well, glossy plastic can look good as we see is the case here, but I’d have preffered it to be colored inside out. at least it would have prevented the flash bleed into camera lens. Still, this should have been stated from the start.

  • Arian Rivers

If plastic is as good as ZL one, and feels not cheap, why not!

  • Guest

And how tough and durable it is! Sony Xperia vs Apple iPhone on the glass front…

  • SSyar

    Please :)

  • Mirrorpurple

    Lucky i got the Z1…

I really don’t see the problem here, it is plastic which means it won’t break. It still has the same specs as before it’s not like Sony took out a gig of ram. People complain to complain

  • Tech Gospel

Would’ve preferred aluminum, but glass or plastic is fine. Still buying it. :)

    Hahahaha…true that.

the plastic that Samsung uses is cheap shit.

What??miscommunication???? Sony people have been saying it was all glass until now. That’s very strange miscommunication indeed!
They tried to pull a fast one with clear plastic that’s all. Let’s not make excuses for them. What they were confused about the materials they used to make their own device. Common xperia blog!

  • sau

The back of my z1 compact get scratches just by looking at it

  • xperiaz6603swe

plastic= less slippery is good if i buy new phone i dont want to drop in the floor the first i do because it to slippery -:)O

no people felt they were misled that’s why they were complaining

  • Kris

Can’t confirm that mine got scratches from lying on clean surfaces so far. However, I carry it in a Bugatti Skinny XL “glowing coal” Leather Case with microfibre material inside. And if you want to protect both sides, Crocfol No. 3748 (Z1 Compact Fullbody) includes a Protective Foil for Front and Backside of the mobile phone.

  • lals

    the scratches are not sexy

What about Samsung octa core lie,it was a lie as bright like Sun, and no one blamed them!!

  • sau

But I want to use the phone without a case. I had the the xperia V for over a year, and didnt get one scratch.

  • nidou bossy

everything is prone to scratch so u have to be careful where to put ur phone… not to put with ur keys or coins in ur pocket! then it won’t be scratched!

  • Kris

I personally don’t have the Crocfol’s so far (only the one for the front side and it’s thin and “invisible”), but that would be a good way to protect the back. However to solve the camera issue, you need to remove all protective foils from the back to let the led flash shine into the night instead of through the foil.

Interesting comparison: the iPhone 4(S) and 5(S) have a hardened glass back and also get scratches and the risk of breaking the complete glass if dropping the phone on the floor is significantly higher. So in the end there is not really an alternative which would look nice… maybe an Aluminium back.

  • Ado Kanashii

ure right bro scratches really suck big time, i think Sony should start thinking of getting GORILLA GLASS like they did on xperia SP. i dont care spending a couple more bucks on a Nice anti scratch phone than spending on glass covers!! maybe they’ll start thinking about this once they launch the Z40 hahaha

  • Denislav Popov

This is because of the back protector that Z1 has, take a detailed look and you’ll see it, without it you won’t see any scratches on the back of your phone because of the tempered glass.

  • Abhik Maiti
  • sau

The back is not glass, it’s plastic, and it doesn’t have a back protector. “The front side of the phone is made of durable tempered glass, and the back side is made of high-rigid plastic sheet.”

  • lals

None of my other phones have ever been scratched. My z1 compact was scratched the first week.

  • roeshak

They always said the s4 would come in two variants, octa and snapdragon. Don’t see the lie there. Sony on the other hand have used clear plastic in the hope nobody would notice. That’s very different. It’s not about the benefits of glass over plastic or vice versa. It’s about misleading info. Period!

  • Denislav Popov

I just saw you’re talking about the Compact version and i was talking about the z1, sorry mate :)

  • Akira Y? (??)

well for Xperia Z/Z1 owners, we are all aware that the front and back of our devices are covered with plastic screen protectors, so technically, we don’t feel the glass panels of our devices, we feel the plastic screen protector unless you take it off…. :) just saying

  • Martin Ambre

  • grav1ty

Right, but i think that lumia series from nokia have the best premium feel, when it comes to plastic. Let’s be objective.
Samsung… it’s not worth to talk about their phones

  • Danny

Several people would prefer Plastic over glass for the rear cover, i would imagine from reading so many posts.

  • Andrew Bienkowski

Look more closely. On the front there is an ASF but on the back isn’t also guy from Sony mobile confirmed this to me,so if back of the phone get scratched we’re out of luck here as we can’t remove ASF from back panel. My Z1 compact also have loads of pin size scratches on the back and I was using official case with it since the day of purchase. Also comparing to Samsung. Plastic is plastic regardless of quality, it is also much softer than glass so both phones will scarch evenly quickly. At least Samsung is not providing misleading details as they were always specifying plastic as material of choice for their products.

Release the damn phone, in India, Sony!!

Personally I really liked how the Nokia N8 felt in the hand, Had a premium feel, and just enough weight that it didn’t feel overweight, or cheap. If the 1020 was slimmed down, and ran android, Nokia would have a huge hit on there hands…

I personally don’t mind if it is going to be plastic, as long as it is high grade plastic.
But I might even like it better should it be matte, like ZL :v

  • sisore

    Just sell it :v

  • Utsav Shah

    I don’t care !

  • I have mine since 6th of february. The plastic part is VERY VERY fragile, mine is already SCRATCHED in a few places, you can see it clearly. The phone itself is fantastic, the battery life is amazing, the speed perfect, the looks awesome, unfortunately the plastic backpart… completely fucked up… Despite the fact that I’m very carefull with it…

  • lals

No. Exept for the scratches, the phone is great :)

still nice phone, still feels nice in the hand.
positive? plastic not break that easie, when drop down

but i guess there are also some negative points:

    – plastic easier get scratches
    – plastic is cheaper, isnt it?
    – the mobile industry lied about it (in shop they told me its glass)
    – sony obviously lied and knew it, it took a long time for them to confirm its plastic
this is cheating on the customer

iam a bit disappointed about sony in their handlign with that problem :/

this issue, and the problems some people seem to have with camera flashlight when dark scenario are the reasons why i not bought the phone for 500euro.

maybe its mine when the prize drops down to 300euro

  • ??????? ?????????

Is it stiil waterproof with plastic back?

  • ????

  • Best phone ever

Damn, now that you’ve said that, I’m surprised that there really is not an ASF on the back o_0 Means we will never be able to solve our Camera problems so easily as it was with the Z1 (with simply removing the ASF).

  • FredrikAn

  • Salem Dee

at least it got KitKat update!
    not the poor Tx..

  • Bunny

we have been waiting for so long for this phone to reach our Malaysian shore…

  • Kris

OK, but Xperia V had a normal removable plastic back like Xperia S, and not glas-imitating plastic. Two different things.

  • Cmmdr Keen

i wish sony would make a windows phone 8.1, getting tired of lagdroid

  • androneed

sony is now just a bunch of scammer

  • zairolafzal zainal

I dont even bother if the back are made from plastic but iam impress on how sony make it look so premium even it just a plastic. Plus the cost will be reduce and the price will be lower …. :-)

  • zairolafzal zainal

Just put screen protector on the back panel. :-)

  • techielover

nothing is perfect so is sony…..

  • jonnyboy

Was the original z made of out plastic as well? Cause it didn’t felt like glass to me. That’s cool cause i’m ok with the z so the z1 compact is still good. Gonna get it >:)

  • Abraham

I actually prefer the plastic back. Less stress of worrying about breakage.

  • Chris

    WP really sucks!

  • Cmmdr Keen

why? i dont bother rooting phones etc. im too lazy nowadays

  • Bogdan

Still, too expensive…to close and in my country over the Z1!Not right!

  • Bogdan

the market is messed up,they are too greedy

  • nidou bossy
  • Z1

    “plastic shit” ? :/
    Sony, wtf???
Your quality is going to be poorer now?

  • Rafal

This is completly rip off. They do not provide good quality back side, they want make more $$. This is completly fake !!! How phone knows which side he knocks ????
Gorrila glass adds some $$ to production because it’s 3rd party piece.
Smaller phone than Z1 , smaller costs even with same hardware inside. So why to save for fu… plastic back. It’s in bad condition after 4 days of use

I just keep it in my pocket, and when I went to work, I only put it on my leather wallet in the locker. Back home, I put it on my wallet or on my fluffy bed. I babied that thing. And 2 weeks later, I got some free time to actually play with it and I realised 1 very obvious sceatch and uncountable number of sratches all over. Fells like I want to paint the back to conceal it. Haha. But still very powerful phone in 4.3 screen.

Conclusion: Material matters. The back is very scratchable plastic. While the front is perfectly fine, the back looks like a drift race track. Not cool.
