Sony says Xperia Z2 is H1 2014 flagship; not sticking to a single design for future models

by XB on 26th February 2014

in Xperia Z2

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASony Mobile’s Creative Director Kurozumi Yoshiro has been speaking to the Japanese media following the launch of the new Xperia flagship Z2 and Z2 Tablet. He revealed some interesting information which we thought we’d share. When Mr Kurozumi was quizzed on the quick succession of flagship launches he replied that it was a function of how fast the industry was moving.

“In order to maintain a flagship, you must update at this frequency,” said Mr Kurozumi. When pressed on why Sony does not adopt a yearly update cycle, Kurozumi responded that you cannot catch up with peers on that cycle. He went on to confirm that the Xperia Z2 is the “flagship of the first half of 2014.”

Moving on to talk about design, Mr Kurozumi said that he does “not want to stick to a single design”, giving hope to users who want to see Sony move away from the OmniBalance design that first made an appearance with the Xperia Z last year, but has appeared on the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z2 flagships since.

  • TechGuyChris

Make an Xperia that looks like the sony bravia w900 :-)

  • Kacho_ON

That would cut up your hands when holding the phone

  • Mike Gonzalez

as long as they dont leave their flagships in the dust after 12 months and keep updating their software, im fine with their decision

  • Phat-t

The Z series are beautiful as it is, I dunno how it can get any more beautiful XD

  • Gregor

I think Sony should keep the OmniBalance Design so people learn that a Sony mobile looks in a specific way. That is what Apple and iphone lives on and same thing will work for Sony.

  • zymo

Xperia Arc meets OmniBalance design = Xperia Z3

  • Rene Pedroso

I would like see an Xperia device that utilizes the front an rear panels as displays if Sony continues to use glass on both sides. Maybe one for media and the other for office with batteries for each display. Or the aluminum frame has some type of functionality like LED around the circumference

  • karamelakimo

    i think it’s beautiful

i don’t matter this year also with omibalance in flagships
but must change in 2015 or people will get bored ;)

  • peltruquin

Less Bezels, More Screen, that would be awesome!

  • goldenblls

I think the omnibalance design is unique to Sony and beautiful at the same time. Now imagine if the Z3 was as slim as the Z Ultra or the Tablet Z2.

  • Michael Hofmann

I’d like to see an Xperia ion + ray inspired omnibalance design.

  • Raj Singh

I really like Sony’s OmniBalance design but I’d like to see what else their imagination can bring to market. Sony always makes beautiful devices so I’m curious to see what they will design next.

  • Amsakanna

ray gold was a real stunner

  • Amsakanna

    increase in the width:height ratio

  • Bryan Ng

Then it’s confirmed, Z3 is coming too this year. It must have a different design.

  • P9

keep omni balance design pls, u can also release another phone.
z series loves omni balance much

  • Kevin

Those bezels are for waterproof feature and if you don’t care because you will never drop it to the water or anything at the end it is like having gorilla glass it is something that protects your phone

  • Rogue

I really hope they keep updating there phones, not to mention filter algorithm in the camera software that messes up the photos with that awfulccompression. Apart from that Sony is doing a good job, also keep the stero front facing speakers .

  • Battal Aljadei

OmniBalance design’s cool but it would be sexy if mixed with Arc design .

  • fiwatec

“the new walkman xperia design” will be most welcomed as if it includes “real” full bass stereo speakers, s -master amp., premium earphones like ex1000 design with full remote control…ehhh Sony mobile please release it sooner, can’t wait anymore…

  • Sony should re-release a gold phone since they were the first on the gold smartphone ship (i think there isn’t any gold phone prior to Ray)

  • Bunny

I own both ion and ray, it would be amazing if I can relive their great design in a phone :)

  • roeshak

Why is he talking about catching up to competition? The 6 month flagship policy is based purely on greed and nothing else. They’ll stick to it as always until it draws enough criticism to make them change. That’s always how it’s been with Sony anyway. They just want to have something new to market every 6 months.
Trouble with that is, what you end up in h2 with is essentially a prototype design and an unfinished phone like the z1. It was the same with the T, unrefined!
All they’ll do is pack a faster processor in but the rest, unfinished goods. It’ll take a few more months for them to finish the job and release a proper successor in H1 of the following year.

  • gunboat_d

Greed? You’re an idiot. The Japanese market has always been this way.

be careful assigning human emotions to non-human entities. Companies can’t feel greed. And investors can’t be happy with sony’s tendencies for release this many products.

  • first half so we’ll be seeing leaks of what is the avatar pretty soon and then release in like october?

as if it releases in june which is when the first half ends then the z2 will have a life span of like 3 months

  • roeshak

Did you even think about what you wrote before you wrote it. Company’s are run by who? Human beings…. And last time I checked, human beings do feel greed as you put it.
    Mmmmmm! Very strange comments indeed!

  • Deki

    I don’t agree!

  • moving away from omnibalance would to me be a bad idea but if they keep it square then i will still be all over it but if they start to put curved backs or samsung like shapes then they will lose the hold they have over me as i am obsessed with the omnibalance design infact i want it with even sharper corners sortof like this i did these concepts in paint

  • toast

Oh well, I’d be happy to say bye bye to Omnibalance. Just not my cup of tea.

  • Guest

I love Sony, but Samsung has just announced their new flagship and it’s water resistant, yet it doesn’t have as much bezel as the Z2 does. So is it really to do with the bezel? (I’m not having a go, I genuinely don’t understand and would like someone to explain) it’s just I heard someone wayyy before the new flagship were announced and they said it had nothing to do with the bezel size :S

  • Vadim Katznelson

Just to be clear. The s5 is water resistant, not proof. That means its merely resistant to water splashes, nowhere near the underwater photo capability of the z1 with it’s 30 min resistance when submerged for up to 1.5 meters. The z1 is certified to be a bit mor water pr

  • Z_ftw

so are we looking at a new design for Z3 then? interesting! can’t wait to see what’s in store for the 2nd half then.

  • Lukas

Somehow it must.. Because the s5 has bigger bezels than the s4 and I think it is due to water resistance. BTW Sony says XZ2 is IP58 which is more than water resistant it is going under water in one meter depth and that for 30 minutes. Samsung is just IP56 or seven which means rain and spit water, it is not like you can go swim with it…
And maybe it is about Dragontrail glass which is a bit flexible and needs to be hold in place by the bells bezels… Either way I like bezels as long as they aren’t as big as on the HTC one

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Third gen is XZ1 compact I believe. :p

Lets see what the 4th gen might be like!

  • Guest 2

You do realize that S5 does have the same bezel size of Z2, right? Z2 is about 5mm longer and 0.5mm wider, but it does have a larger screen.

  • game

Good Sony doesn’t give up on 1/2 half year device strategy?
Hope someday the Sony lovers are out of money or their designs getting really ugly…
I know I shouldn’t say that but I really think they have to stop doing this it’s just slowing them down with real innovation because they only plan for half a year maybe and they can’t stick to update schedules now stop it already

  • Sony Make Believe

Don’t Worry, Sony will make you believe

  • zairolafzal zainal

Well … It seem we will seing a new flagship under vaio smartphone with window os. Its ok with 6month cycle as long the update support still 18month.

  • Kevin

Like everyone has said S5 ain’t waterproof like Xperia Z, Z1, ZU, etc but eventhough the bezels between S4 and S5 are much bigger from the S4 to the S5.

  • grav1ty

Give us a full aluminium flagship, it doesn’t have to be water resistant, because this is more like nice to have instead of definitely need.
Do your best like you always did sony. Make it thin as you can, keep that 5inch Screen, dont let it grow. If you put a bigger screen, pls make sure that the device won’t get larger.
You gave us that premium feel starting with Xperia Z and you went better with Z1 and Z2. Now you have to beat yourself and full aluminium is the only way for better premium feel.

  • Castor

have you seen the video comparisons? they look almost the same size. try holding them and you’ll find no difference. the z2 is even better with the bigger battery and camera (not only on mp count but also on sensor size and aperture).

  • Sacrow

And I think this S5 water resistant is how samsung play catchup, remember how water resistant the S4 active (which is not true) if this S5 waterproofing failed samsung would definitely release another phone (S5 active maybe?)

  • Castor

s5 is not on the same level as sony in water resistance. you can only splash the s5 with water, not sink it to a pool. sony can be fully submerged.

  • Castor

yes arc was the sexiest phone design but it also looks “girly” i don’t think it will appeal to male users.

  • jake

    ya it have more bezel

  • Makozak

It’s an Smartphone but i owned an Sony Ericsson W910i gold color. Awesome phone !

  • timothy chan

i found the TX to be a pretty cool design. I liked the z series too but you know, not everyone has the same taste. It may be interesting to see what they can pull off.. I’ve always preferred sony’s design over others.

  • kaostheory

The Arc still looks good today, can’t say that about the iPhone 4.

  • Guest

Full aluminium will add to weight and create problems with antenna placement. It is not the be-all end-all.

  • Nguyen Eazy

the next beautiful phone would be Arc Z, sexy glass curves!

  • Mac

I would love 2 see a mix between the neo, ion and sp in the sp screen size.
With aluminium back, illumination bar, curves like neo and oh almost forgot waterproof ofc.
    Flagship specs plz.

  • spatch

I’d like to see a return to the curved Xperia Arc design, but without the mostly plastic build of the Arc. If Sony can blend the high quality build of the Z2 with the subtle arc curve, I’d be a happy man. I just find the current omnibalance design a little stark and uncomfortable in the hand.

  • toast

It’s gotten them 2 shots at fixing the shortcomings of a phone. The Z was an interesting but in many ways flawed glass sandwich. In a year they’ve revved it up into something pretty awesome.

  • toast

I loved my TX, though the back was a bit too cheap plastic. Another run at that Arc concave design, but with a better quality build would make me very happy. Happy with plastic, but up the quality a bit.

  • lightninglion

As long as they keep updating the phones then I am fine

  • D83

I think for several model (not waterproof), Sony done a great job for minimize bezel, ex : ZL & T2 ultra

  • Prateek Bhanushali

As i mentioned earlier, it is the successor to xperia Z and it is a worthy update. There vl b a successor to Z1(i1-2) during the second half.

  • Just another Guest

Sorry to burst your bubble, and I assure you I’m by no means a Samsung fanboy (far from it, I do own an Xperia Z as primary phone and a ZR), but the IP rating of the S5 is IP 67, where the 6 refers to the dust resistance, which is one step above Xperias, and the 7 refers to the waterproofing. If you remember, the Xperia Z was IP 57 certified, which meant it could do 1m for half an hour, and the S5 can actually do the same, which means in the real world, the S5 will be just as waterproof as your average Xperia, albeit slightly worse.
Having said that, after the S4 Active fiasco, I don’t think I’ll ever trust Samsung with waterproofing.

  • Nick

Sony please iclude IR in your next flagship!
It’s the only reason why i’m not going to buy the Z2…

  • Garrett Dillon

I have few qualms with the OmniBalance design. It is beautiful and unobtrusive, essentially elegant. I would also have no problem with them moving towards another design, so long as it was just as beautiful and functional, preferably more so.

That being said, I think Sony might be best served by sticking with a winning formula and just making a few tweaks. Reduced vertical bezels, as others have pointed out, would be great if they can find a way to maintain the same IP ratings. I would also prefer a material other than glass on the back of the phone. My experiences with the Nexus 4’s glass back have been unpleasant. Even with a case, my phone’s rear glass panel shattered while in my pocket. Many iPhone 4/4s owners have similar stories. The Dragontrail Glass that Sony uses, like Gorilla Glass, is scratch-resistant, but not shatter-resistant. A more durable backplate would be a fine revision to the design. Aluminum would present an engineering challenge, but it isn’t entirely unworkable. A durable and premium plastic like polycarbonate or delrin smoothed to a soft touch finish would be another good option.

  • Armin Torkashvand

damn it! first half of 2014?

  • Colby Leong

Agreed, if Samsung’s IP certification fails, and Sony manages to get great reviews from critics Sony could indeed take a chunk out of their profits, and no fingerprint sensor or heart rate monitor is going to save that. Although seeing a change in the design would be exciting to see.

  • Armin Torkashvand

    what? first half?

  • Alexandru Florin

wow, i normaly use a phone for 3-4 years..if i buy a new z2, it will be so left behind after 3 years:)))

  • Alex_rac

Xperia Arc Z with Snap Dragon 805 and 4 GB Ram :D

  • CR

wanna see a different and equally beautiful design!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dereknobuyuki

Yeah, I have the GX (which is nearly identical to the TX) and I really like the design. I get the design direction they’ve taken with the Z (and things being in Sony Mobile) and like it but I still some of their old design language from the SonyEricsson team.

  • heres a scary thought i just got what if all omnibalance flagships were planned from the start what if they gave the first two bad screens to get people to buy the new ones

why else would sony the leading screen maker in the world give their flagship a bad screen what if the the z2 is the final omnibalance flagship where they added their actual expertise which is why this one has an actual ips panel

what if they could if they wanted to make the original z perfect with an ips panel with good stereospeakers but they held off as they had more flagships with that design planned so they couldn’t make the first one perfect

i don’t know it’s just a scary thought i had as every phone since z is the same they are basically the same phone just improved upon every time

  • Jan

Re-use of ray edges and rounds would be just fine. Better to think something new and better

  • Ace Loo

To be fair to Samsung, S5 is actually IP67, and not IP56. In short, this means that compared to the Xperia Z it can survive better in the dust storm, but compared to the other newer Xperias it gives in to water faster. The guest poster had a valid point though: If Samsung has done it, can we make future Xperias with better dust protection with thinner bezels?

  • Dmitry Perets

    too bad =(

  • Tangent Lin

Cheap plastic got the advantage. I drop my TX many times :-)

  • valentino

what if that all you said is true.. and those things are their business model strategy..
what if they already planned the true perfect one which is z3 or z5..
and the z2 only an upgrade off z1 with stereo speakers and screen..
I am aware of these things too..
maybe they don’t want to ended like samsung..
major sensor update from s3 to s4 or note 3..
what if they want you to buy a brand new flagship phone every year by adding a 2 or 3 feature that hardware dependant that still unfixed and… fix it in the incoming flagship..
means RIP you off Gently, Softly, and Slowly..
but They can fix it if we trade in the z series flagship to the new one with a discount..(this discount will never happen anyway)

  • valentino

z1 is succesor of z.. and z2 is the succesor of z1..
    there won’t be “xperia z 2” “xperia z1 2″ ” xperia z2 2″ –‘

Sorry but those screen that YOU called carp still can beat Samsung displays easily, there weakNess is only viewing angels,

  • valentino

calm down roeshak.. company want to be rich.. so if they don’t greed they cannot be rich.. and they only see money in us..
feel sad but that is the truth..
Love z2 but I’m afraid if there are some issues in that stereo speakers or double speakers.. so i will stick to my note 3.. and wait for xperia z3 z5 or ZX whatever.. as long it is the last z series..
(if they add a better camera in z ultra will stick to it)

  • Mr Kurozumi said that he does “not want to stick to a single design”

I hate iPhone and Galaxy phones for that reason. When the Z2 was announced, all I could think about was: “Please don’t go Samsung on us and stick with the same design forever”.

I don’t hate Samsung just because it’s not Sony or wtv, I don’t buy their phones because all their phones look the same with different sizes. It gets boring after a few years looking at the same design.

  • roeshak

In calm, I just didn’t buy the argument they’re releasing so many flagships because they Want to keep pace with the competition. That’s all! It just seems to me like pure greed which nobody benefits from, not even Sony. The fact that he’s being quizzed on it shows the market isn’t happy with the policy. It certainly isn’t good for consumers to have such a heavily diluted brand.
Apple and Samsung seem to do just fine with one flagship so I can’t see any reason other than shameless greed for it. My opinion and I’m free to express it.

  • Akshay Ballal

Next must be a curved Xperia…

  • Dirk

SONY!!! please keep the OmniBalance design it’s perfect and makes you different!

The roundish competitor design is crap!

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Yes agree that “Z1 2” looks little wierd but judging by the model number, it indeed looked Z’s successor….
You can check the model No. here but still there is lot of confusion

  • valentino

yeah you right.. well we are on same boat.. I don’t like the policy.. and i realize that policy when they launch z1 and z ultra..

You should change yourself, and buy phone every year, the world move forward very fast

  • Jobs

What it means is that at any given time you can get a brand new flagship Sony phone that isn’t older than 6 months hardware-wise. I for one think that sounds AWESOME.

It leaves you the option to upgrade as often as you like without having to settle for an ‘old’ flagship or wait ages for a new one.

  • Amir

Yeah, they should keep omnibalance or combine omnibalance with arc design and even slimmer side bezel!!!

  • gunboat_d

ok, lets pivot to this since you think corporations are entities with a single consciousness and *not* a large organization with many competing goals and staff.
what’s wrong with the Z1? it is a good phone; a phone that will last you several years. people like you will always find something to complain about because of your own insecurities about ‘having stuff’. every time any company comes out with any phone, there are people like you who say “well it’s not perfect….it doesn’t have *this* feature….what about this software update?!”.
even valentino below you says ‘i’ll wait for the z5’ because of the speakers so he’ll stick with my Note3 (of course then he sayd he’ll stick with the Ultra, so who knows what the hell he is talking about).

  • Antonino Costa

you’re right, it’s water resistant, not water proof. there is a whole lot of difference

  • jangaleon

the xperia z was the most beautiful imo. the perfect omnibalance design.

  • Sal3m

I dont think we want Z3 this year, we would like to see ZR2, Z2 compact and Z2 ultra.
And it is long time we didn’t see the new version of Xperia Go

  • Danny

I might be the only one, but i hope the can do something with the on screen buttons. I dont particularly like it especially when taking screenshots. They also take some room from the full screen. How about capacitive touch buttons on the bezel below the screen? Bezel take up space.

  • gh

Instead of update flagship fast..update your software fast SONY

  • Danny

Also, since u can’t move app to SD anymore on Sony Xperia, I suggest that 16 GB (11 GB user available) be standard on all Xperia models including the low end smartphones, Xperia M. no less than 32GB internal on all flagship. Dont cheap out on Sony loyal customers and attract new ones as well. SONY XPERIA phones are generally more expensive than other brands, while specs remain the same. And lack of App to SD features, Infrared ( to use your phone as a remote) or the features, how would it overtake its rivals? THINK SONY!

  • what will happen to support?
maximum support for each device in this policy will be only 1yrs and it means 2-3 times firmware update and 1 android update!
    it not good at all

  • Xperia Pro Owner

I’ll be glad to see a phone with design similar to Xperia Pro – sexy curved back, rounded corners and with chrome-like metal frame. I find the current Xperias way too squarish, boxy and boring. It’s high time they get rid of they ugly-ass bland design and bring something fresh to the market.

  • Xylo

Yeah! Less bezels, agree! And it would be so cool if sony will adapt their Bravia sense of quartz design for Xperia devices.

  • xperiafan324

You should know that All Z phones are also IP 55 certified, while the s5 is not. IP55 rating specifically means that the device can withstand low powered waterjets. So while the s5 is as waterproof as the year old z in case of dunks, just don’t take in the shower, okayyy? :-p ;-)

  • Pingback: Xperia Z2 ?? ???? ???? Sony ?????? ?????? ????? ????? - ????? ??? ????()

  • xperiafan324

Actually the bezels are a practical feature to make sure that when you hold the device in landscape mode for movie watching for example, you have some edge to hold onto. The other main advantage of more vertical bezels is that it helps the phone to be thin, which is crucial to the omnibalance look. Third, it features a 1/2.3″ sensor, front mounted stereo speakers AND A 3200 mAh battery. For that you need space and the bezels provide that too.

  • xperiafan324

I’d really like for Sony to at least employ the omnibalance design once more bur with carbon fibre and sapphire crystal. Maybe sapphire qould be too expensive right now, but a year from now I can see flagship premium phones using sapphire commonly. Now THAT would beauty that’s built to last.

I’ll like the Sony for its omnibalance design since it stands out and provide them identity in the mobile design, its simple yet elegant. But if only they could make it a bit slimmer and lighter. Also provide some little curve edges for the small xperia so it won’t be hard to put inside our pockets. Other than that the charger docks to be placed in position that won’t be annoying if your using battery pack. But still I like Sony than other brands.

the z2 is 4.8mm taller, 0.8mm wider and 0.1mm thicker. it has a battery that is 400mah larger as well as a larger camera sensor and a screen 0.1mm larger than that of the s5. I’m sure all those contribute to the bezels.
even though these are all valid and logical reasons for the size of the bezel, i still want smaller bezels on the phone.
    i dream of a 5 inch sony smartphone with the ridiculous dimensions of 137.5 x 69 x 8.5mm with a 3500mah optimized to get 3 days of s.o.t

I thought S5 received IP67 certification? That means it’s at least waterproof by up to 1m, isn’t it? And Xperia Z2 have IP55/IP58 certification, meaning it’s almost as dust-proof, water-jet resistant, and as waterproof as Sony says it is.

  • DespondentPhoneSellerUK

In fairness, they don’t screw their existing users this way. Those with the Xperia Z were hardly left miles behind by the Z1 coming out, and I have a Z1 and don’t feel remotely jealous of Z2 owners because its not a massive upgrade, its iterative in performance which means Sony can keep pace with anyone else bringing out their own flagships throughout the year.
