Xperia Z2 owners: Who has an off-centre rear camera?

in Problems, Xperia Z2

Xperia Z2 off-centre rear camera_2A number of Xperia Z2 owners are reporting that their rear cameras are ever-so-slightly off centre. Most people who notice this, say that their camera is positioned more towards the top-left of the casing rather than bang centre. Indeed we have noticed this with our own resident Xperia Z2, although this placement does not affect the camera functionality in any way that we’ve noticed.

If you have a Xperia Z2, have a look at where your camera sits. Is it dead centre or is yours also slightly off centre. We’d love to get an idea of how many owners suffer from this. As mentioned earlier it doesn’t affect camera functionality, but it does perhaps suggest that Sony’s quality assurance needs to be tighter for such a premium device.

Man that would be very annoying! I am glad I don’t have that problem on my Z1c.

  • scapegoat

I have an off centre led flash on my SP, does it count?

  • David van der Zande

Black levels are very bad! My Z2 tablet looks very good but on the Z2 phone they are reddish!

  • SkyS1gn

Me… and gap issues, and 2 dead pixel. Offered with a swich within 3 weeks.

  • Yehaa Afandy

    center (y)

  • assasinezio

I have this shitty problem on my Z1…….i will try to post some pics..

  • Abhay Singh

Same here buddy… With my Z1 aswell

  • christian

Looks like this is the case with mine to. But I’m not sure, i don’t have great lighting to see it correctly!

  • Jassi

Damn! I have it on my original Z O_o never noticed though.

  • Guest

The world does not just revolve around the US.

  • NKD

well…dats sony :D hahahaha :D a compmy who cant eeven proprly finish up its flagships :D so how the hell can it manages its other devices as well !!! :D

  • le pen

    chinese work….

  • hansip

Meh.. As long as no image quality issue, i believe it’s just nitpicking. Besides, the outer lens doesn’t add anything. It’s just a cover that might get smudge easily, compared to the real lens inside the module.

  • Guest

Mmm lucky me… looks fine to me but… what do u think???

  • Ado Kanashii

Hmmm lucky me! looks fine to me but… what do u think???

  • Shakhawat Hossain

Stop posting these kind of articles to seize good peoples peace of mind. I bet many users who got off centered camera units of Z2 did not even notice before reading this article. Even if they were happy before knowing this, now they won’t be anymore. If it did not affect any functionality then why post this article ? Just pass along the problem to Sony so that they will be more careful from next time. Give the people some peace who payed premium price with their hard earned money for a off centered camera phone…

  • Noleen

Oh my god… How will I stop the climate change now??

  • lew

My z1 compact is slightly off but the front camera is way off.

  • spatch

Just picked up my Z2 last night from Telstra, and thankfully the camera placement looks bang in the middle.

By the way, I managed to snag both the stand case and noise-cancelling headphones on Telstra’s “accessories pack”. Guess I’ll end up paying way more for these than they’re worth over the life of the contract, but it only cost me $8 upfront.

  • Gitarooman

Thats off center actually, but please know that the green glass in the actual camera lens, the outer one is to protect it.

  • Michael Hofmann

I have this, although not as extreme as in the photos but as mentioned it doesn’t affect functionality what so ever.
Just as a thought to go with this Samsung and HTC make more of the camera in terms of design focus in their phones (the camera cut out is larger and centred), is this something Sony should be doing, given the importance of the camera as a USP.

  • Z

if you look at all the previous Z phones, this goes all the way back to the original xperia Z. i think this is just normal. it doesn’t have any bearing, imho. asking it to be in perfect center is way too much nitpicking, tbh. why bother when it doesn’t even have any effect on the quality of the camera.

  • Sean

I had this issue on the old X10 and it caused blurry left side

  • xili

There will always some defect products on the market, nothing is perfect……

  • Diego Mendes Fernandes

It’s all about quality, nothing more nothing less.
This don’t cause any problem on the camera, but if there an “error” like that, they need to know it, “today” is the camera tomorrow could be other things.

  • Mac

Actually now that I look more closely I see that the rear camera is as u said slightly off and the front is way 2 high.

  • Sean Nguyen

WIth my Z1s, the flash was off center pointing down to the left.

Which caused pictures with flash to turn out with the flash way off the intended object.

Sent it in for a replacement.

The new unit is perfectly centered and does not exhibit the poor flash results like my first unit.

  • Paul M

it looks to me that the camera is in the centre of the protective window exactly as it should be, but there’s some sort of black ring behind the lens cover that should be central but is offset.

  • xili

Ya ya, everything that is defect are made by chinese, everything that is evil are done by chinese……. =_=”

And you are so damn good, never ever did discrxmxnxte any entity in your life………

  • Z

let’s agree to disagree. i haven’t really noticed my camera’s off-center until after reading this article. and yet, regardless of whether the rear and front camera (yes, both of them are off-center in mine!) of my xperia Z are off-center, i haven’t really had any complaints on the quality of the photo and video outputs. i’m pretty certain the rest of the xperia Z series owners (Z, tablet Z, ZR, Z1, Z1f, Z2, and Z2 tablet) might have noticed by now that their camera’s off-center, too. heck, i even took a look at my brother’s galaxy S4 and its camera’s also off-center. and he doesn’t give a flying fuck! so again, this is all just irrelevant nitpicking.

  • xperiaDROID

So, everything that’s incomplete and bad is done by Chinese?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy8MUnlT9Oo

  • xperiaDROID

Why so serious really? It’s better to know than not to know. If no one knows, Sony won’t even notice this and won’t improve their quality assurance; if people knows, Sony will look forward to improve their quality assurance. You pay a premium price for a premium device, we expect a premium build quality, even if it’s just a off centre rear camera or a small dent, everyone should know about this. So, you prefer to be stupid and act nothing happens instead of knowing the problem?

  • Clive Rennison

Mine is off centre to the top right, as long as it.doesn’t affect the photos I don’t really mind too much.

  • arstorm

I have the same problem in my z1 but it disturbs me only because it looks a bit weird :D However I can’t notice any problems or optical distractions in photos.

  • brapo

I have this on my z1 and it has no bearing at all. It still takes very good shots.

  • Ken

uhmmm this.. as stated, shouldn’t affect camera itself.. but for sure it must reduce the video range once you are making the shot.. im I right?

  • Romek from Sydney

Same for me, white D6503, Australian market (Optus), had noticed it when unboxing, have taken about 100 photos since, appears no detrimental effect to the picture quality.

  • Nor do

Mines off. But to the right. Still the best flagship I’ve owned. And I’ve tried a few.

  • bista

You have a front cover protector back of your phone? Does that affect the pictures as you have covered your camera?

  • bista

I noticed this on the first day on my Z2 and didn’t give it any more attention after that as I did not notice anything with the photos. Also front camera is not center aligned.

  • valentino

it’s about What SONY said about Z2. They Said About Details right?
that slightly off centre camera mean they fail their attention to the “details”.
and we should get a better new one. They don’t do what they emphasizing in their ads.
so you have right to ask for what they said because you paid the designer and the company.

  • David Hvatov

    Mind is off centre too.

  • The Chosen One

    same with Sony Acro S.

  • Tim Westerholm

I’ve had all phone is the Z-Series and all of them didn’t had it is the centre centre. Still fantastic images.

  • user

… and who said that this is a manufacturing error?

  • user

    Enterily agree with you.

  • XperiaBlog

I think you’re missing the point. Yes we would all have extra peace of mind if we were ignorant about the issues in the world around us. But the point of us being here is to inform our readers and when you are spending money on one of the most expensive Android handsets in the market right now, you should demand and expect perfection.

We clearly state that it doesn’t affect functionality, but it does affect perception. We noticed it straight away when inspecting our retail handset and many others have too. Given Sony’s marketing campaign has resolved around “Xperia Details”, these kind of issues should not exist.

Also, by ignoring it you are saying to the company you are okay with it. Frankly we would like Sony to realise that people do notice, if nothing else to make sure it doesn’t repeat such mistakes going forward. It doesn’t detract from what is a fantastic phone in the Xperia Z2, but build issues such as this can take a bit of the shine off.

  • Prashant Sharma

    well said (Y)

  • Jenge Engelbrecht

Just need to add that it is common with all the G-Lens 20.7MP phones not just Z2

  • Oscar Jordy

if you watch android authority’s review at youtube, they mention that when video stabilization was on, the camera module actually move around, maybe when you leave the camera app, the camera module leave at the last position instead moving to the center.

  • Rulez

I’ve got the Z2 for a week now, and I’ve noticed my camera is also off centre. I bought this phone in Holland btw. :)

  • Hirantha Jayawardena

In my Z1, its positioned at the dead center.

  • Joseph Nolan

A camera which is very slightly off-centre? OMG life is such a bitch! For God’s sake like someone has just said, stop these totally irrelevant articles which have no bearing on our day-to-day lives whatsoever and are completely pointless! I love technology and my Xperia smartphone, but get a grip and report only issues which matter!!!

  • Sumo

I want to know one thing – is the incoming call volume loud and does it utilize 2 speakers or just one? Now it’s officially out around, thought I would ask before jumping the gun. Thanks.

  • dan

My z camera is not right on center didn’t notice that but the camera and pictures are great so i can’t tell that’s a problem

  • theskig

I think you spoiled your phone with that fu##ing plastic cover.

And your camera is not centered, by the way.

You should have put the Joker’s face when you said “Why so serious really?” That would be more convincing and interesting…

  • Inge

On my Xperia Z C6603 (Norway) the camara is slightly off centre, up right, appears to have no effect on the picture quality.

  • Timbo1

Ok, I have had many phones from many manufacturers with an off center camera, whether it be a front facing( My Z1 and Nexus 4 in my current crop of phones) as well as my Samsung, Motorola Droid, HTC, or back camera (Z1 again) it does not effect anything on the camera, to me this is just nitpicking just for the sake of it. If the camera is not obstructed then it is deemed passable by QC, not that big of an issue even though the phones are expensive its one of those things…

  • Jenge Engelbrecht

well 5 of the Z1’s I have access to has an of centre camera

  • SkyS1gn

Dude something crap attached on you back panel :DDDD

  • Battal Aljadei

Not lucky, you have the same perversion .

  • Shakhawat Hossain

First of all, i didn’t said anything about ignoring issues ALL OVER the world to get a peace of mind. Also i certainly didn’t said that i am ignoring this fact that the phone has off centered camera. I am just saying that there is nothing to do about this who bought off centered unit of Z1. So knowing this only take away our peace of mind and also create a negative impact on Sony’s reputation(i am a die hard fan of sony). And of course it doesn’t need any saying that people who paid care $500+ will not be ok with these kind of manufacturing faults. Nobody on earth would be ok with that so why would i ? In the end, which matters most is that, will Sony take any steps to prevent future incidents like this ???

  • Ado Kanashii

    OMG!!! ure right!

  • i checked all 3 of mine (i ordered 2 extra by mistake) and one have it offcentered

then again now i noticed that my z1 from last year has it off centered too

And how will they do that if ppl like these guys don’t bring it to yours and their (Sony’s) attention? It is hardly world beating news but we do pay a high price for these phones and in the past we haven’t always got what we paid for. This way we can ensure that they know what we expect from them.

  • igel705

Maybe Sony wanted it off-centre?? Looking at the picture from the sonymobile site the camera is off-centre too!!
And..if it was a mistake…how could the glass fit onto the rearside?? There is no glass over the camera, so i think Sony know what they did there…

  • mosfett

So before NO ONE knew about this, everything was fine, and now when some ppl got this, suddenly it’s a major problem. Really guys… Should I laugh or cry about it?

  • P9

the outer one to protect? sure? I got water in my Z and arround 1month the pic still blur. I think i may need to replace whole camera, may replace the outer glass then, thz

  • xperiafan324

You don’t need anything on the back at all man. It’s either Gorilla Glass or Dragontrail glass. Either way it’s more resistant to scratches and shattering than any screen protector you could get. Except for maybe those 9H glass protectors, but that’s just glass over glass, redundant anyway you look at it.

  • xperiafan324

Gotta love how OCD xperia fans can be. :-p xD
This should be featured alongside the “gaps in the frame and screen” news.
As Sony said “Details make the difference”! :-D

  • Philipp

I have an off centered front camera. It’s position is left of center.

  • Maesapraba Pande

Camera off-centre?? Probably because of the position of the camera is in the corner, so it is not straight-spot camera focus but the focus of camera slightly tilted to the center, it causes to give a little distance field at the bottom corner of the lens. I do not know for sure, but this is one way to eliminate my disappointment.

My z2 is a bit off center and I thought the camera was just crap but today I compared it to my brothers z2 taking exactly the same shots with the same settings and my photos are all washed out and and look like the quality of a front facing camera. I thought the camera was just crap but known I know I have a dud. My iPhone 5 takes better photos. I’ll be taking my z2 back to the shop in the morning
