A closer look at the flaps of the Xperia Z3 (Compact?)

by XB on 5th August 2014

in Rumours, Xperia Z3 series

Xperia Z3_3bThe pictures below are a continuation of the ones we saw recently as the Xperia Z3 Compact. However, now these are tagged as being from the Xperia Z3 instead – despite the design differing from the earlier Z3 leaks we saw (see the distance between the magnetic charging port and the port flap). This either could be the Xperia Z3 Compact, a prototype or a different phone altogether.

The new pictures below give a closer look at the flaps and ports on either side of the phone – one side has a small micro USB port, whilst the other has room for a micro SD memory card and micro SIM slot. Hopefully some upcoming leaks should give some clarity on exactly which phone we are looking at here.

I consider this phone a fail – design and specs just suck comparing it to the revolution Z and Z1 made

  • m sacha

Looks like the flaps are improving upon each generation. Will be nice to see official promo shots, leaked shots always look underwhelming.

  • Looks like this time the Z3 compact will not stand to the Z3 like the Z1 Compact stood to the Z1… this time, the materials look cheaper. What’s more we know it will have 2gb of ram instead of 3. So probably Sony will take the same approach that Samsung, LG and HTC are using with their minis… that is, even the specs and build quality are lower than the flagship they derive from.

And this is unfortunate, and a really bad move from Sony, because the Z1c has been successful only because it was the only one mini that had the same specifications of its flagship. So I think you’re right, this the z3 compact will be a fail as the other minis.

    Because it’s a prototype.

  • Boonerski

For the most part, I don’t care about the design of the phone but a slight refresh or change would prove to be very welcoming. On the other hand, I wish the rumored specs will remain as rumors; still a Snapdragon 801 @ 2.3 ghz??!! Really??

  • ??????

why there is no Z2 compact.???

  • henry6135

John . I just agree… Norman `s blog is something…last saturday I bought a great Fiat Multipla from bringing in $6690 recently and just over 10/k this past-month . without a doubt it is the best-work I have ever had . I began this nine months/ago and immediately started making a cool over $87 p/h . Anybody can make money easily her. To make money click FINANCIAL REPORT in ——– web site———WARPJOBS.COM

  • Yeah. I think the USB port should be on a separate smaller flap less likely to break. And while they’re at it, secure the flaps more tightly! One drop and the flaps pop open (Z2).

  • Turki Saadi

I think this is z2 compact since it didnt appear til now

  • zymo

What were you expecting? Neither the 808 nor the 810 were available in high quantities/for mass production usage. And there is no significant benefit of the 805 over the 801 which would justify the higher cost for Sony. If you don’t like what you see, don’t buy it and wait till Q1 2015. If you don’t have to upgrade I would wait for that new SoCs.

  • z3 series seem dissapointing it seems they are getting worse and worse z1 is where it stopped for me atleast

  • roeshak

I have to say I’m not that impressed with the changes to the aluminium frame. Accepted it’ll improve handling but aesthetically it looks much worse.
The key thing is if the rumours of the specs are true because if so, then it’s very hard to understand why Sony would proceed with this. This fall, the story on the android side will revolve around buzz words like 2k display and 805 cpu.
If Sony release just a redesigned z2 with new software, they’ll find it very hard to make an impression.

  • Billy de Fretes

i really hope flaps only for microsd and simcard slot since these part people rarely open it and let usb port no flap at all.

  • ??????

    i hope so..

  • MasterYoda

The Z1c is a big success for Sony and they have no reason to stop this successful story with the Z3c.

I’m convinced it will a great product and it will be even better sold the the Z1c as people start to realise how good theeirs phones are.

We have no real facts yet but an army of trolls is already showing up in order to bash the product!

  • bista

I hope they wouldn’t announce Z3 this fall, but Z2 compact and Z2 Ultra, as it would give the Z2 longer lifeline. Somehow I fear that we will not even see L on Z2 or if we do it’ll be a disaster like kitkat on Z1.

  • Boonerski

SOCs serve a big part of justifying phones as an upgrade over their predecessors. IFA is still a month away and maybe Qualcomm has already been producing the next generation Snapdragons in huge quantities months before. But we’ll all just have to wait and see what happens; its never too late for Sony to surprise us. and BTW, I’m not planning on buying any phone until 2016.

Announcing a new phone doesn’t mean the life of your current phone suddenly drops. I don’t understand all the whining about a 6 month release schedule. It’s good news for everyone.

  • payback

pls xperiablog make something that these spammers stop, they got active recently. Stop it as longs as there is not much, in the beginnings or there will be spammers like honey attracts bees. :(

  • jonyah

Seriously? the Z2 is a huge improvement over the Z1. The screen alone is more than enough reason to switch.

  • Until they figure out how to make the microUSB port itself waterproof/resistant, it needs to have a flap on it as well.

However, I agree combining the microSD and SIM slot under one flap makes a ton more sense.

  • Jan

Dont make offtopic ok? :D bye ;)

just not to add new comment: These flaps looks so good, classy :) i mean the shape of them.

and responding to @disqus_wsBACJYYNs:disqus i think there was no any revolution.. so i consider this not a fail, but just “update”

  • Lukáš Pávl

I still think (or hope maybe) that this device here is Z2 Compact or something similar to that (maybe budget version of Z2). If it is Z3 then i’m very disappointed.

  • Tjaldid

    most likely the Z2s

    plastic side?

  • Vuyo Ncube

Awwwww man no USB 3.0?! I’m still waiting for an Xperia with that :(

  • moca

it won’t be until USB 3.1, because USB 3.0 has an ugly port that Sony cannot use ;)

  • moca

Furthermore, galaxy note 3 which has USB 3.0 transferts rates are around 25MB/S, so it’s useless no more speed than usb 2 can do.

  • i hated the weird worn out looking plastic and blue with silver color for the frame

  • Vuyo Ncube

How does USB 2.0 compare in a smartphone? People were hyping about 3.0 in the Note 3.

  • paul4id

I hope they also get rid of that stupid fiddly Apple-inspired SIM-tray and put a decent spring-loaded micro-SIM slot as on Motorola phones.

  • Nawi

    Most ugly Sony phone ever!!

  • Haidar Alamir

I would hold my judgment till the device gets announced. Remember this is just a prototype pre-production device.

  • iiandskater

Maybe because Sony’s current production strategy is like this :
    1. Z and Z Tablet
    2. Z1 and Z1 Compact
    3. Z2 and Z2 Tablet
    4. Z3 and Z3 Compact
    and so on…

  • iXperia

    Just like iPhone 6

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

This guy gets it, I kind of like the design so far, bezels aside of course. If anything Sony could be working more on refining the software and camera, as well as a more polished design.

This is Sony sort of testing the water here with their new design, love it or hate it, it’ll definitely feel much better in the hand. And you can bet it’s going to look damn good next to its big name competitors like the iPhone 6, and Note 4.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Pretty much the only negative to a very beautiful, glass and aluminum device.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I agree with you on some of that. For me a 1080 screen is fine, Sony has finally caught up to its competitors but doesn’t surpass them. My G3 has horrible battery life, almost as bad as the Xperia Z, if Sony if to proceed to 4K they need to make sure battery drain isn’t an issue.

As for the design I like the look, the overall size, if it is as tall as the Note 3 is a problem. Bezels are the usual complaints with most Sony flagships, but I’m excited for this device and can’t wait to get it.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Hell yeah the Z1 Compact was definitely a huge step in the right direction, something none of its competitors really got. Only thing is that the whole “mini” and in Sony’s case “compact” idea has caught on for a lot of consumers to buy enough of them

  • webusermy

Ok. So that’s one disadvantage the Z2 has over the Z1.. Which is easily overcome by buying the black or purple model.

The Z2 on the other hand has much better speakers, battery life, screen over the Z1.

  • Yup. They have the tendency to pop open. I remember once when I washing it, it dropped in the sink and flaps popped open. I freaked out over water ingestion. Luckily nothing happened.

Yes, it does not. You are right, but history has a way of repeating itself. afaik z1 is still having some serious issues after z2 and Sony is doing nothing about it.

Flaps popping open is what makes a phone screen less likely to crack.. it’s the same for laptops. It acts as a shock absorber/releaser. It’s the reason iPhone’s screen cracks so easily upon dropping

Please DO NOT GET THIS PHONE. I’ve had it for 1 month and used it to snap photos of my son swimming in the pool. The waterproofing is a sham. It failed after 20 minutes in non-continuous water immersion despite ensuring the flaps were firmly flushed with the chassis. I suspect the weak flaps slowly gave way during the course of usage – major design flaw. Sony refused to provide repair warranty. So, BUYERS BEWARE!
