Leaked schematic reveals Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact dimensions

in Rumours, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 series

Xperia Z3 dimensionsThe leaks for the upcoming Xperia Z3 flagship and Xperia Z3 Compact continue. This time we have what appear to be detailed schematics of both phones, revealing key measurements. Starting with the Xperia Z3, it points to a handset that is marginally narrower (0.34mm) than the Xperia Z2.

The handset is also just 7.3mm thick, making it an impressive 0.9mm thinner than the Xperia Z2. The Xperia Z3 is rumoured to carry a 5.15-inch 1080p display. The Xperia Z3 port flaps, stereo speakers and buttons are consistent with the recent leaks we have seen. This is perhaps no surprise as these schematics have been leaked by the same source.

The Xperia Z3 Compact schematic points to a handset that shares pretty much the same height/width as the Xperia Z1 Compact. What is interesting is that measurements for the screen allow you to work out that the Xperia Z3 Compact will definitely have a 4.6-inch display (assuming these dimensions are correct). Previous rumours point to a handset with a 1080p display, which would be amazing for such a small-sized handset (if this turns out to be true).

You can see the implied measurements of both handsets below. We also have included a tool that allows you to stack the measurements together to get an idea how different they are.

I dunno if making the Z3 display smaller is a good move considering you already have a compact Z3 model. Wouldn’t you want to compete with Apple, Samsung and LG more closely by releasing 5.5 inch phone?

Xperia fans, would you be upset if the Z3 was 5.5 inch even though you could get the Z3 Compact if you care about one handed use?

  • Clarence Alvarado

Z3 compact will rock on a 4.6″ 1080p display, just put a 3000 mAh battery on that note.

  • okipniano

For sure the Z3 compact will be the flagship-mini killer.

The compact looks very good dimension wise. Should have small bezels

  • rejoice dube

I have been holding on to my Xperia Z waiting for a flagship phablet… A successor to the Z Ultra but with premium specs. I am so disappointed with the screen size. I really had my hopes up!

  • El Snajdo

Nice, just bring tap-to-wake, 4K and timeshift to the Z3 Compact, and the world will be its oyster :)

  • roeshak

The z3 is a very confusing phone. Head scratching time indeed! It’s definitely not going to have any improvements on the bezel side considering it’s just as tall as the z2 but with a smaller display.
Z3 compact on the other hand looks every bit an improvement on last year’s model. Well less than a month to go and we’ll know all. Z3 at this point looks inferior to z2 but I find this hard to believe!

  • Zeder

I hope Sony introduce a new deign language soon, almost every Chinese smartphone company copied Sony design. just look at xiaomi, Lenovo , Huawei. The Omnibalanced design is not unique anymore even though it is a beautiful design still.

  • Usp_GKG

Why the fuck I would like to compare 2 phones that are almost identical?

  • Guest

included noise cancelling headphones it would be perfect!

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

[Insert disappointment about Z3 and Z3 Compact based on few leaks here]

  • xperian

why 1080P for the compact? isn`t better to keep it 720p @ “4.6”?

  • wared

this is the specifications that must be for the sony xperia z3:

    1. dual-LED or Xenon flash.

    2. IP68 water and dust proof

    3. 1/1.5 sensor, 33.2 megapixel 16:9 camera.

    4. snapdragon 805 2.5GHz at least.

    5. 3GB memory at least.

    6. 64GB internal storage at least, i hope will contain 128GB.

    7. Quad HD display.

    8. 4000 mAh battery at least.

    9. USB 3.0.

    10. thinner and much lighter.

  • me

Where do you get the 8,8 for the z3 compact from?

  • XperiaBlog

Mainly for the overlap feature to visually see what the difference is. Obviously we’re talking about very small differences here, but some may be interested to see it. For the Z3 Compact there is no difference, but included it anyway for completeness.

  • JRMoore

*sigh* If only Z3 Compact (or even Z1 Compact) were cheaper…

  • michls

XPERIA Z3 With 5.2 inch or 5.5 inch and 2K or 4K display because the Xperia z3 compact has F-HD , and Snapdragon 805 ,RAM3

  • Tangent Lin

No problem with the design. I will only buy Z3 if Z3 come with Snapdragon 805.

  • What are you going to do with 33.2mpix camera? Print billboards?

  • Jiyeon90

ffs sony I want a 5.5 inch display..

  • b3z3l h8r

Oi Sony sort this out… Why can the z3 compact have such small bezels but the z3 is still stupidly big? *Cue infinite bezel hate*

  • drifter77

I agree. 720p is enough for that screen size. Besides, 1080p will hog the battery life and possibly produce some heat. Still, if Sony throws a decent 3000 mAh battery or at least 2800 mAh it will be a killer phone and my next upgrade from my 3 years old iPhone 4.

  • Christian

The fact that you know they’re almost identical is because you compared them.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Lets also add, the ability to submerge in salt water, a touch screen that works underwater, a 50 MP camera with Zeiss, Sapphire glass, aluminum backing, oled screen, boom sound speakers, OIS+, built in optical zoom, fingerprint sensor, hear rate monitor, and a built in gun for added measure

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

if that was the case for all Sony devices

  • paul4id

not sure I’d want the battery drain of 1080p

  • GothiSci

It would be so good if the Z3 compact will has 4.7″ display

  • Sotupidny

With Z3 compact’s dimensions LG can put 5 inch display! Why Sony is so fucking bulky

  • John

That sounds like the ‘perfect’ dream phone that sadly will never ever be made by ANYONE!

  • Tegra

    Yeah!!!

    Xperia Z3 was 5.5 inch

Xperia Z3 Compact was 4.7 inch

Xperia Z3 Ultra was 6.4 inch

Xperia Z3 Tablet was 13 inch

    Yeah!!!

  • Celxiuz

5.15 inch and 4.94 inch???? the word ‘compact’ is really showing compact….><

  • xperian

Exactly it’ll drain the battery and causing heat that’s sure will happen, it is thinner than z1c so not sure how bigger battery could sony manage. Plus the price will up for 1080p.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Z3 C has no difference? Dude, its slimmer!! :D That thickness was the main reason I didn’t go for it. :p + LARGER SCREEN!

  • Ninjas

Good thing is coming. Save up lad..

Nope, It would take the Z2’s Supersampling ability to new heights.

people say Samsung copied Apple but I think Sony copied Apple too, Xperia Z series look like iPhone more than Samsung Galaxy. Omnibalance is nothing except trying to follow iPhone trend

  • chris

You forget Vivo. Vivo is the biggest fan of Sony!

  • Ranjith

When will we have a dual sim in Z series..
    Getting too late…
    Z3 should have a Z3 DUAL…

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

I wonder how does a Z resembles an iPhone? Like seriously, there’s nothing similar

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

A bigger battery is possible with a higher density battery pack..I don’t know about the ambient temperature that you guys have in your respective country but my Z on 40 degrees Celsius doesn’t get too unbearably hot..Mind you..

  • Sombody Help Me

Mann.. It’s really going to be hard to justify buying the Z3 against it’s competitors… Take the upcoming Note 4 for example.

Size wise, they’re almost about the same(referencing Note3’s size).

Processing power on the Note3 will most likely be the SD805 SOC.

Camera, I’ll also be getting Sony’s EXmorR mobile on the Note 3 as well as with, well.. “relatively” better image processing algorithm.

    http://www.phonearena.com/news/Qualcomm-reportedly-giving-Samsung-a-deal-on-Snapdragon-805-for-the-Galaxy-Note-4_id59139
And if this article holds any truth, The Note4 may even be cheaper than the Z3!

What’s left to be seen is the battery life i guess..

  • Makozak

Actualy no, it’s Apple that copied Sony. Back when Steve jobs were still with us, he asked Sony designer to make iPhones design, he clearly said : Sony have the best Designer in the world.

  • Alex Norris

and Sony omnibalance is copy-paste from iphone 4

  • sank

u r funny.. if thy mk such a phone..itl cost 2x the price of z1.. y do u need a bttr processor?I mean s xperia z stil dsnt lags with its s4 pro(throw anyapp and it runs smoothly) .. how futureproof processing u want? 20.7 is fair.. but the should increase the auto mode from 8mp to 16 mp atleast..

  • Alex Norris

    4.7 display, can`t be called compact…))

  • X

you do realize Apple is heavily influenced by Sony, especially during Jobs’s era? The slim and minimalistic design has been the core of Sony products for a really long while. Go do research what company and whose company CEO raised Jobs up to be what he was. One reason why Sony fell was because they were ahead of other people too much and not enough marketing.

Nobody cared about slim laptop when Sony made one. Now we have ultrabooks.

Nobody knew the slim tabletZ years ago, but people made a big fuss out of iPad Air.

Nobody cared about live view and smartwatch. Now everyone is doing it.

  • Well-wisher

Nope. IPhone is copy-paste of Sony’s design. Check the Google.

  • Alex Norris

I knew that someone will tell me about Sony designer and his vision for the future of smartphones, I know about it. But now another question: who first implemented omnibalance!? Sony before iphone 4 not released omnibalance, show me Sony Xperia smartphone, which has omnibalance, with glass body, until the iphone 4 ..

  • Mi

    Pertinent!

  • comp

z1 compact despite having 4,3 is almost as big as other 4,7 smarphones – and is called compact. so compact only means small screen and not ‘compact’ device?

  • Mohammed Khired

as long as they minimize the bezels , than yes it’s good…

other than that , forget it !

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Sony will prolly market the Compact as their main choose to compete with the iPhone 6 due to the same form factor. Just like what Samsung is doing with their Galaxy Alpha

  • Alex Norris

Compact – means not only small screen, for me it, means compact screen, in compact body! IMO, It was be great, if Sony mobile, release Z2 compact, with the same screen size 4.3, but in more compact body! It was be progress.

  • LG

Yeah! What a logic, Sony and some fanboys out here are fucking stupid.

Sony’s 4.3 is almost big as other 4.7 phones, stupid bulky phone, too much bezels… Only Sony can do this!

  • Tangent Lin

Do you watch the drop test?

  • Billy de Fretes

if Z3 camera post processing, sound, software feature, UI, = Z2, then it’s a biggest disappointment for entire Z series… it doesn’t matter if Z3 using 805 but picture quality still below others..
Note 4 also released at the same time with Z3 and don’t forget iphone 6.

  • Jumbo

Nowadays it can be called compact.

  • not

Then you probably won’t be buying the Z3

  • lol seems legit brah. The only thing that Sony ever designed for Apple was the iBook

  • smi

this charging dock is terrible :(
It looks like it missng flap or smth.

The Z1 compact is almost the same size as the Galaxy S2 + it is water resistance, it may not be as compact as recent LG phones does, but I won’t call it bulky.

And If Z1 compact is consider bulky to you, Sony is definitely not the only OEM can produce bulky phone in the world.

LG may offer the most compact android phone to the global market currently in term of screen-to-body ratio. But in term of spec, Sony is still the only android OEM that offering the flagship spec in this “bulky” phone size.

Many ppl out there is looking for a phone with good spec with this”bulky” size but not the “compact” size with mid-range spec like what LG offer on the LG G3s.

  • Iki

    and the macbooks…

  • MG

Those autoCAD drawings are propably made by a sony funboy who direved them out of the leaked pictures. No way those are official but leaked drawings. In Z3 he forgot completely to show the LED flash, and in the Z3 compact, the LED flash is way out of proportion compared to its camera.
So take the dimensions with a pinch of salt! Thanks….

  • Naos

Exactly, I would expect Z3 to be smaller than Z2 by shrinking the bezels. It’s a pity it didn’t happen. Also I would go for 5.1 inch display or even 5.05

  • blitz_arc

look at the size bro, same width, smaller height and thickness. the compact is legit.

  • thoughts

Well make the thickness 10 mm and jou have plenty room for the buttons

  • SmallerXperia

That is nowhere near “compact”! Thank You for this post – will buy Z1 Compact…

  • SmallerXperia

Damn… I thought it was 13,88 cm for height… But it’s actually tiny tiny tiny smaller….
