Xperia Z Android 4.4.4A new firmware update with build number 10.5.1.A.0.283 has been certified by the PTCRB website for a number of handsets including the Xperia Z,  Xperia ZL,  Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z.

There is a good chance that this new build will bring Android 4.4.4. A recent schedule update from Australian carrier Telstra confirmed that the Android 4.4.4 platform update was heading to the Xperia Z. Whatever this update turns out to be, it should start rolling within a few weeks.

Xperia Z Android 4.4.4

The following platform update for the Xperia Z appeared on the Telstra website recently.

Thanks Karim, Markus, Nawi_88, Saper and SiF!

Nice! Although my ZL firmware update (german version) came REALLY late. Like 2 weeks ago or something… Hope this one doesnt take that long…

  • xperia-z

yes, is what support keeps telling me, 4.4.4 will solve the battery drain… finally!

  • Tochi Nwodu

Funny my xperia z1 popped up a new update same as the same kitkat build number I have
    Anyone having something?

  • Mark

It would be nice if my Tablet Z got an update sometime soon. Still stuck on 4.2.2. Sucks when my phone has KitKat.

  • Nawi

    It’s 4.4.4 =)

Thanks Xperia Blog for mention me (Nawi_88) in this post ^^

Fucking finally! We’ve been waiting for this update for so long and it’s almost here! After this 4.4.4 update, there’s one more Android L update to go, Sony!

  • Stanley08

If Xperia Z get 4.4.4 before Xperia Z2, I will kill myself. :p

  • Jiyeon90

happened to me 1 week ago, I installed it but saw no changes

  • roeshak

Z2 will probably get the same 4.4.4 build that’s released with the z3 so there won’t be a roll out until at least the end of September.

  • max

So funny, let us receive the…., 230 first, since may21 till now didn’t get it.

  • Dan Vafidis

4.4.4 arejust numbers and bug fixes, as soon as you have 4.X there’s nothing much different..

  • Doubleyoupee

Yes it’s been confirmed by gbil that it’s 4.4.4:…1#post54920081

To be honest, I dont care if ithis update is still is 4.4.2, I just hope it gets the battery drain issue solved :)

  • Killian Khoo

    Finally ~

  • Giannikosmo

Yayyyy!! I’m sooo happy! I think Xperia Z is the first device that Sony is taking so much care of it till the end of support! Congratulations Sony! :)

  • Killian Khoo

    same here ~

  • Killian Khoo

Really hope it can get Android L update, but that probably not possible :(

  • guest

You kidding? 4.3 had been out for ages and 4.4 has been out for a few months now. Just update via PC Companion.

  • Mahinthan So

it should start rolling within a few weeks

Ha ha i waited 3 months for Kit kat and finally flashed it

  • Kunal Shukla

yeah… most probably the last and final update for the mighty Z

  • Killian Khoo

I think u can update ur Tablet Z via PC Companion, at least should available at least 4.3 update ~

  • Killian Khoo

    Hope so ~

  • Akshay Ballal

Not for India? C6602? I checked the PTCRB URL… Not for C6602 :(

  • Ritwij

Don’t you worry child, Sony’s got a plan for you

  • mukul verma

me too, got an ota for same update, just 0.2mb download in india.

  • Madhu Pv

As per one of the authorized dealer of Sonymobile in UAE, Sony is going to discontinue Xperia Z model by September along with the announcement of Xperia Z3 :(

  • ShinOrochiX

Xperia SP KITKAT? Will it ever come. :'(

This phone might just be my last Xperia, I’ve been with Sony/Ericsson since 2009, such a shame that Sony can’t fulfill KitKat for the SP.

  • Husam

for everyone complaining about the battery drain in the Xperia Z…
i had the same issue since the last update, and it made me turn off “Location” completely… then for some reason, i performed a factory reset… after that, no battery drain what so ever :D

  • zeetabeeta

The Z2 will get directly the L as Z3. My two cents

  • dimz

Well, if they’d(Sony) port this one, add lightbar support and enabled ART…

  • Ritwij

Xperia Z production already stopped according to stores in India.

  • Naos

They should not do this, this phone must get Android L. Xperia Z has been released in February 2013 so it hasn’t been two years yet!

Android L will be much faster than KitKat due to new ART runtime, it will make the phone actually faster and stutter free.

We want 2 year support for Xperia phones!

  • Constantine

Sooner, because they have much more work on Z2.

  • XperiaSP

New firmware (10.5.1.A.0.283) certified for the older Xperia SP could it be Android 4.4.4? :)

  • Ziegfrid

what about z2? every older z series got the update except to the latest baby xperia z2?

  • f35hunter

I received notification from software update center that there is 14.4.A.0.108 kitkat 4.4.4 for my device which I already had.
So what the hell is this? Is this a troll from sony or technical error? And should i (reupdate) my device?

  • SK

I would not be ambitious about the performance improvement coz of ART as Art is targeted for non snapdragon processors. Snap dragon is optimised for better performance with Dalvik runtime which

  • dreamgs1

4.4.4 post is already very old. I think there was one some time last month and date shows june 24 in PTCRB site.

we many need to wait for this couple of more months.

  • dreamgs1

word “leak” mean something which should not get publicly announced. This is just a software update. How come it is a leak? rather it is a news.

  • dreamgs1

grab whatever you get. .230 version updated twice on my xperia ZL. Later realized that first time it was 230+ MB and second time it is less than 50mb.

Take and update whatever sony gives. Its a holy food

  • sam

My honour to give u this medal. _l_

  • f35hunter

Looool. Very nice moves from the smartass sony it gave u the same update twice so you not complain about updates

    waiting 4.4.4 for M2 :D

  • kevlo

    No update for you

  • Flavio Lemos

same here on my tablet z

  • Naos

Not really. Nexus 5 has Snapdragon 800 and ART shows on average x2 performance gain in benchmarks on Nexus 5. Also, there is plenty of improvement regardless of CPU architecture. It is because a lot of optimisations are independent of CPU type. To name them:

Much faster memory allocation mechanism. Applications can take more memory much faster, possibly means less stuttering and pauses.

Brand new garbage collector which results in much less execution pauses that are normally caused by GC when unused memory needs to be freed. That directly relates to less stuttering and less lagging.

Applications in ART are now compiled upon installation not upon running, so when they run they are already compiled and optimised. Also the optimisation can be more aggressive because it doesn’t matter that it will take a bit more time (as the optimisation takes place at the moment of installation, not when application runs).

    Just check benchmark results here:

As I said, as a customer, I expect Xperia Z to get Android L. It uses the same CPU as Nexus 7 2013 and Nexus 7 gets Android L, so there is no reason not to release Android L for Xperia Z too.

  • Stanley08

Yes, but still. Z2 should get it.

  • Boonerski

After I updated my Z1 the very first striking change is the addition of the Google Play Music app and it can’t be uninstalled unfortunately. I don’t have it prior the update… As for anything else, I’m still scouring my phone for any performance changes.

  • Blantz

If you put a ROM with optimized dalvik libraries or only the optimized libraries on the Nexus 5 you must have the same or better results than if you run the bench with art.

  • Micha?

    Xperia Z2 still with 4.4.2 >:-[

  • Ritwij

Upon a hill across a blue lake, Sony said “on roaming we will not update”

I’ve tried everything, and trust me there is no update. This is why I’m so annoyed. I’m wondering if it’s either something to do with EE (my network carrier), or Windows 8. If it’s not those then maybe my tablet is faulty.

  • Mark

I’ve tried updating through the tablet, PC Companion, SUS. I’ve tried everything.

  • mcchin

respect your seniors, junior. lolz jz jk

  • guest

can Z C6602 also receive the update?

Yaaaaaaaaay update .230 just arrived in Middle East (Bahrain).. Hope android L arrive with World Cop 2018 &D..

  • Killian Khoo

Actually the SoC use in the Xperia Z isnt the same as Nexus 7 2013,
I think u should do some research on wikipedia for further answer ~
The SoC use in Nexus 7 2013 is like imporved version with more GPU core and high frequence ~
Xperia Z is using the same SoC as Nexus 4 ~

  • Boonerski

Hahah. I was singing to your comments.

  • Boonerski

I never had that problem but hopefully…

  • Dan Vafidis

Z2 on 4.4.2 has stuff that Stock 4.4.4 doesn’t have, 4.4.4 update was mostly Bug Fixes for Nexus 5, which even Nexus 4 etc. didnt really need

  • Pavan

    Leaked screen shot

  • Mark

I’ve looked into that, but my bootloader cannot be unlocked. I’m literally stuck. I think the issue is that EE aren’t releasing the updates, but I don’t know what I can do about it.

  • Elina

i updated my phone to KITKAT and gosh the battery drain was sick
my phone used to last for 6 hours WITHOUT LOCATION or GPRS turned on.
WIFI also turned off! so the only fuctionality i had to such an expensive phone was that of the most ordinary. google services took up 70% and somtimes even 93% of my battery!
touching my phone was like touching lava! so freakin hot! sometimes my battery temperature used to go over 55 degree C.

i waited for 3 months with this horrible update and finally came 10.5.1.a.0.283!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and my battery lasts for over 12 hours with EVERYTHING turned on ….and with all services turned off it lasts for oer 36 hours!
now it feels like an xperia!
god bless the people who made this update ! my phone doesnt heat up much now…
    really happy with this update!
