Android 5.0 Xperia Z3Sony has announced that the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) version of Android 5.0 Lollipop is now running on the Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3. This follows Google releasing the source code earlier in the week.

If you are looking to try Android Lollipop AOSP on your device, then Sony will be providing the necessary binary files soon enough. These binaries can then be used to create your own custom ROM. The device configurations for the Xperia Z1 and Z2 will be updated and Sony says they are coming soon for the Z3.

Interestingly, Sony has also commented on the Lollipop beta that we reported on yesterday and says that it will “be monitoring interest, reaction and the success of this project with a view to rolling out similar initiatives in other markets next year.” There is hope yet to all those outside of Sweden.

So the z3 has the best screen. damnit. now what to do with my z2

  • David Hvatov

That’s bullshit. In reality you won’t see a difference! Btw Z2 has deeper blacks. Comprared today in shop.

  • shhh

Because they made it much brighter.

  • DBS

Material Design is just horrible. There. I said it.
I really hope Sony changes it so it keeps looking the way it currently does.

  • Agree , tbh I don’t like Material Design hmm

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Z2 display got brighter with latest update.

  • jonyah

I’ll take your Z2. Problem solved.

  • Md Olyullah Akand

But in my eyes, Z2 has the best screen. It gives more realistic colours than Z3. Z3 is over saturated and colours are not as realistic as Z2.
Brightness issue is not actually a big issue. Can you tell me who uses the highest level of brightness? I always use the lowest level of brightness with auto adjust on my Z1. Demanding more brightness is like bullshit to me as it takes battery a lot.
I would upgrade Z1 to Z3 if Z3 had the same display of Z2.:-)

  • I said that on a YouTube thread and I guess many thought I was crazy. On paper, yes the z3 is much better than the z2. In reality, you hardly see the difference. In fact, in reality, there’s no difference.

  • Even, why do we need it even brighter when the current brightness is awesome even in the highest of sunshine?

  • I’m counting on Cyanogen

  • mustafa

    Beautiful

Just Wow Sony :) You are setting the market on fire … Love you

  • Faisal Armand

RAW Support & Full manual controls.. COME AT ME, BRO!

  • Alex

Totally agree. I like the current look of Sony’s UI, and the new design might even make me think twice about updating when it comes out (also the new design of the onscreen buttons at the bottom is horrific)

  • Joy Ahmed

they should change the default UI as well as change sony’s present UI because it has gotten pretty boring.

  • ZERO

There is a Lollipop version for Xperia Z now. It’s great

    Sony’s skeuomorphism!? BLAH! They’re UI designers must be living in the previous decade ;_;

  • Avin

seriously,,, its horrible… sony please we dont want our phone look so horrible , i only purchase sony phones because of its interior and exterior design,,,, if this will happen, no i just cant think of my xperia Z2 looking like dat in UI …..please give your interior design to touch it SONY

  • Avin

even the icons are horrible and outdated …please dont do this to us

  • Haldi

    i’m heavily impressed!
Nothing more to say about that!

  • lucky

I think there are a lot of new things to like about material design. What is it that you don’t like about it? I get it it’s a matter of taste but compared to other vanilla android designs I think material design is the best one. And judging by the app tray icon and bigger app icons Sony will have a stock-ish look in Lollipop.

  • Tochi Nwodu

    Surprised….
How come xperia z1 is that dark?
Is there something wrong with that screen of its just me?

  • Vuyo Ncube

Material Design is growing on me (more to do with animations that compensate for flat colours inspired by WP 8/iOS 7). The current UI is still good looking but it’s getting old. I expect a complete visual overhaul!

  • Kiran Pasupuleti

Disappointing to see Sony slowly do away with its UI. Perhaps to enable faster updates. Material Design is good, but then the timescape/flow UI in my opinion is very polished. Hope Sony refreshes the UI and keeps it unique. The Google Now Launcher and icons definitely don’t compare to the Sony Launcher.

  • Jack

I’d rather have fast updates and better camera etc than Sony’s ancient skeuomorphic design! If you don’t like Material Design install another customisable launcher and enjoy all the skeuomorphic you can get! I am sick and tired of Sony’s slow updates that in the end don’t deliver anything and leave me dissatisfied!

  • DBS

I don’t like the overuse of pastels, I don’t like the WP-wanna-be simplistic approach, I definitely don’t like the way they’re presenting the multitasking screen (the cards is a very very messy way to find and change between apps), the notification tray looks like something out of Samsung’s TouchWiz, The apps menu with white background is horrible, and finally the software keys symbols make NO sense whatsoever. The only one who could get away with those kinds of shapes would be Sony (because PS) and even Sony was always wise enough to know better. Besides, Holo looks much more classy and less childish…

  • zip

Looks like I’ll be sticking with kitkat for now.

  • d

Wow you are a fucking clown.
    Sonys UI is fucking ugly

  • vv

    This is AOSP….
AOSP is the base for a rom, sonys UI is seperate…

  • MarkLastiwka

…there’s nothing skeuomorphic about Sony’s current design language. If anything, Google’s material design is more Skeuomorphic. I want to see how Sony can combine their polished mature dark/transparent design language with material.

  • MarkLastiwka

It’s that dark. And the colours are not nearly as nice as the Z3. I have them both next to each other and seeing the Z1 screen next to the Z3 makes me sad for the Z1…

  • lucky

I do agree with some points like cards and app tray background, it’s not without its flaws but new animations, shadows and transitions are cool by me. Also the way colors changing according to content is kinda like sony’s media apps. If you ask me touchwiz itself looks more like stock android. I don’t get why people say sony’s skin is more vanilla. Anyways, flat doesn’t always mean childish, sony may pull off making material design its own like media apps aren’t too far from m.design. If there is one thing sony knows it’s design. But they might wanna sacrifice it for faster updates. I guess we’ll wait and see.

  • Alex

Haha I’m a “fucking clown” for having an opinion on a user interface? Think you need to get a life mate.

  • roeshak

Samsung and HTC seem to be far more advanced in their development of android L software. Sony seems to be just starting out!

  • Jack

Do you even know what skeuomorphic design is!? Sony’s design has skeuomorphic elements are you must be blind if you can’t see it!

  • MarkLastiwka

I wonder if you do. Skeuomorphism is copying real life textures and designs into digital world (notepad app being yellow with lines and coils on the top). Apple was famous for this before Ive took over software design.

Sony’s designs are very mature, dark and somewhat transparent. It looks more pseudo-futuristic than skeuomorphic.

  • Nice! But still, they should release an official AOSP-update with some sony-snacks (ClearAudio, Camera) for those who want a Google Play Edition Xperia

  • EddyKilowatt

So, any word on the camera app yet?

Will the default Lollipop camera app (with Raw and manual controls) provide the improved imaging we’re all waiting for… or will we have to wait for Sony to update its various custom camera apps using the new API functions?

  • mustafa

I always use the highest brightness no auto on my z2, and all previous phones

  • EddyKilowatt

So, any word on the camera app yet? The video didn’t go to that section of the UI.

Will the default Lollipop camera app (with Raw and manual controls) provide the improved imaging we’re all waiting for… or will we have to wait for Sony to update its
various custom camera apps using the new API functions?

  • Tony

I just don’t understand why people here think this is the final look of the UI…

  • Guest

  • Reza Swandira

I really excited about the UI design Sony will implement in Lollipop. I like the Material Design approach, but i dont really like the colors
Samsung, LG and HTC may provide faster updates, but it features their UI’s old design, there’s very minimalistic design changes whatsoever. Meanwhile, Sony updates its OS as well as their UI design, so we could see a “real” update here. Besides, all of the same version shares the same UI, like the 4.4 UI on the Z have the same ui like 4.4 Z2. This thing, its not for Samsung. The 4.4 UI on the GS4 has the same UI like its 4.2, while the GS5 got all-new, more polished UI on 4.4.
I think sony’s software update, besides its long time, is worth the wait

The app icons do make sense the arrow back is obvious the circle is tied with Apples home button and the square represents an app

  • Faisal Armand

Sony will surely make their own customised camera app with RAW support and Full manual controls.

  • EddyKilowatt

So, six month wait, then? And Sony gimps the app to avoid cutting into its pocket camera sales? :-(

  • The trick to get realistic looking display? Switch to a custom ROM like cyanogen. It wouldn’t make sense until you try. For whatever reasons, my screen displayed colors with unusual intensity and abnormal sharpness and details. They call it xreality engine. I call it Damn you BS display algorithm..

Watch videos on cm via VLC brings out the real colors, hardly to achieve on the stock.

Trust me, LESS IS MORE. Sony goes over the bar even with their lessness

  • Eddy Eddy R

    ES HORRIBLE !!!!!
    IT’S HORRIBLE, UGLUY, DISAPPOINTED.
    why sony?????

  • wxYGShowxyz

ok…. i feel more better with my kitkat now…

  • Faisal Armand

If sony eventually fu*ked up the software, then we are free to post process our own images using RAW

  • Stanley08

The Fanboyism here is strong. I love Sony smartphones, but I refuse to be a Fanboy. Material UI is beautiful. :)

  • Me

What about the textured bubbles on most of Sony’s application icons? The metallic texture on on-off switches in settings? They are gradually getting rid of skeuomorphic elements, but some still remain.

  • Me

Part of it would also be the viewing angles, since the Z1 is on the edge of the frame

  • westberg

Very ugly UI. In general, does not fit to the current design of Xperia. I hope sony UI to a Lollipop will differ significantly from this appearance.

  • Jack

You are blind aren’t you! Their icons are nearly all skeuomorphic, they use the carousel on their launcher, they use gradients to make some buttons look 3d etc! Sony needs to either hire new designers or have someone with good knowledge of modern design oversee the process!

  • skyxz

    Maybe the brightness was low.

  • Tochi Nwodu

    Thats what I was thinking
Because I’ve had the xperia z1 next to xperia z2 it wasn’t as dark as a matter of fact I preferred xperia z1 colous compared to xperia z2

  • Tochi Nwodu

Maybe then again, even being at edge its too dark..lots of videos are on youtube with the 4 Z flagship

  • Tochi Nwodu

    Lol @makes you sad

  • Patrik

I hope Sony allows us customers to make a decision of our own if we want their skin or a stock android experience with capabilities to use the camera as intended and other functions. I personally come from Nexus to Sony and the thing that “hurts” the most if giving up the stock experience even though Sony’s skin isn’t too bad or cluttered. It is however years behind in terms of design and hopefully Android L will give the Sony team some guidelines to do some modern improvements in their UI. Just take that ridiculous smiley SMS icon for instance, that belongs somewhere around 1999. Hopefully their team is reading our feedback here and taking it to heart.

  • Mohammed Khired

    ?????????

i think there’s something wrong with your eyes….

  • I’m surprise how many blind people are here. The AOSP (Android Open Source Project) thing is optional and it doesn’t represent any Sony Guide line design. This mean is pure Android OS on it, not Sony Software should be there. So as AOSP is an optional chose, you don’t might be worry about this design if you don’t like it, because, Sony Will Deliver In 6 Month After Their Design for Lollipop. This AOSP is for people really don’t care about Sony Design Guide Line (Like ME) and care more about apps and use.

    Please people stop … <3

Wonder if we’ll need a lens profile to correct the Raw images… and if Sony will release it.

  • Andreas

Great UI – please bring it quick to my Z2. I really would love to see an UI there that looks mainly like Stock-Android 5.0. I don´t like this 90´s look of the current Sony UI, not only because there are so much bugs and unfinished areas (like the calculator or the flashlight)

  • wumps13

Sony current app design look old to me and it is far from perfect (Sony z3 compact is bugging and no updates since launch )

  • mohamed

i’ve seen it working on the original xperia z.

  • Yeah very beautiful.
