Sony’s redesigned “TV SideView” app icon hints at Material Design future

TV Sideview_NewAndroid Lollipop software incorporates Google’s Material Design within its interface. This is epitomised by a ‘flat’ design with bright colours. While we await Sony’s interpretation of this within its Xperia devices, we may have got the first hint of what lies in store.

Sony recently updated its TV Sideview application icon, moving from the skeuomorphism with its spherical shading and metallic font to a more flatter icon, more in line with Google’s Material Design principles. We hope to see what Sony has in store with its Lollipop update, we’ll bring you more news as soon as we have it.

i really expect a makeover in the Xperia interface with the Z4 and the 5.0 update
Sony is the only brand that still hasnt changed the UI unlike Samsung, LG, Apple….

  • Cris de Oliveira

    Very nice :D

  • JP

I can’t wait to see the material design of the Walkman app.

  • Diogo Simões

    You’re welcome ;-)
But I prefer the old one.
By the way: any news on the beta testing of android 5?

  • Killian Khoo

    Look nice ~

  • Gene

The Home screen of the Walkman App had material design before Google dreamed up material design.

How the header images and the zoom hehaves are material design for a long while before Lollipop was announced.

  • And that’s why my friend, Sony is going to be a hit in 2015, hopefully

  • spatch

The WALKMAN, Album and Movies app icons are way overdue for a redesign. I’ve felt for a while that they look embarrassingly outdated, so hopefully this is the start of a fresh look for these excellent apps.

  • Thariq Mohammed

new one looks nice, but Sony may loss its iconic look of UI, which mean no different between xperia ui & other ui

  • Battal Aljadei

A whole post to discuss an app icon instead of discussing an important issues of Sony’s mobiles apps ?
come on be realistic would you !
just a question: do you get paid to do these silly posts?
flattering Sony’s silly stuff like an icon and spider man effect etc !?

  • Vu Viet Anh

    Oh god Sony.

there are at least 2 shadows in any good material design logo: the long shadow (from top left to bottom right) and the proximity shadow.

here you have the proximity shadow (albeit with a bit too much feathering) and a total absence of the long shadow.

please hire a good graphic designer for your products kthnxb

  • harrold

there is a long shadow. maybe u cant see it on ur screen.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Or even the Album app, hands down two of the best OEM apps ever made. Kind of curious if HTC is going to change or upgrade Blinkfeed

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I agree, when I bought a M7, while I had my Xperia Z, I thought it was very polished, and great too look at and use. But when I bought my G3, the device that had their new completely overhauled UI, it was great. Offered a lot of customization options. From the home screen animations, turning the device on and off, even changing the colors of folders. These weren’t big or huge changes ever, but they were rather small ones that just added to the experience

  • Ritwij

They won’t change until they release their next flagship.

  • Ritwij

Walkman and Album look outdated? Dude, are you a troll?

  • Nguyen Eazy

not sure if I really want the shadow to stay

  • Xperia Z (c6603)

  • jag

I think sony’s media apps are the best among the other brands.

  • jag

saw that one too. it doesn’t seem obvious when the icon is in your home screen or app tray. but it would be better without the shadow.

  • ea

looking forward for Lollipop Firmware Update.

    #MaterialDesign #MakeBelieve #BeMoved

  • Gene

I hope you’re just talking about the icons… because I also think that those icons look old. I would prefer the walkman icon to be just the w.

  • Ritwij

Got it on Xperia Z2 (D6503) as well!

  • jmaxim917

I believe the Lifelong app is already using the new icons for music, movies, album, etc.

  • Neo Sony

From the previous thread the only thing was detected is negative attitude to material design from Sony users. Really Don’t know what’s going on… I have found one icon pack that looks pretty close to the unique Xperia style: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.XperianceBubble3D.iconpack
Do you really think Sony has to move just like Google did and loose their perfect style?

  • sfordesign

Guess what. This is what sony fan boys are :)

  • Tjaldid

    “Icon”

  • mrninko

    Z3 too

  • Valerius

Yea, Album is fantastic. I have it on all my Androids, even those that aren’t from Sony.

  • Ritwij

just because they’re not ‘flat’ ?

  • I do not like materia design… But it’s nice

  • Dave

the old icon was much better :/

  • David Gattenberg

Make it work landscape.. thats all I want !

  • mustafa

Finally! I’ve always hated that icon style

  • The God

3D UI like VitaOS are much more magnificent than material

  • The God

    Sadly

Sony ran out of ideas to make anything different

  • Cris de Oliveira

I can’t wait to see the material design of the all ui :3

  • Shravan SP

    Z4 too

  • a.hamameh

I didn’t like this new icon.
I like the material design but Sony apps icons are better than this one.
I hope Sony make the new UI look like the UI in the What’s new, Walkman, Movies and Album apps it will be awesome :)

  • P9

    gonna best UI ever xD

  • Xperia Z3

    Wtf is this shit ?

  • AsadMulla

TV sideview. Everyday I get a notification about Stargate SG1. I have never watched the damn thing, why the hell does it keep notifying me about it? So annoying!!!!

  • xperiamike

sony always ahead of GOOGLe ….yep….even though for example the ‘whats new app’ sucks to me ..its ui is awesome

  • xperiamike

not really, im sure sony japan designers will think of a different way to kill others ui from other oems as usual

  • theskig

Looks like they fixed the connection bugs and removed (finally!!!) the first “connect to TV” popup. Good job Sony!! I use this app very often it’s in my home screen!

    BTW material design sucks :)

  • Kiwison

“Details make the difference” was their slogan for which Z? Can’t remember, but totally agree what you said. These small details make the experience better

  • xperiafan324

Honestly I prefer the old icon, the depth and the shading of the old style is a lot more in-line with Sony’s Ps4, and VitaOS UI.

  • SparkyAMG

It doesn’t have the material design shadows – thank god, they look awful – but rather a softer shadow. I’m happy with the style they’ve embraced and am glad it’s not strictly following the material design guidelines. Google have improved tremendously, but they’ve never led the way in terms of design.

  • nojues

I prefer this kind of material design to the flat colired design like on the iOS 8 and windows 8, good idea Sony
