Xperia Lollipop update does not support manual camera settings (RAW)

by XB on 16th March 2015

in Android, Firmware, Imaging, Xperia Z3 series

imagesThe Android 5.0.2 Lollipop firmware update for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact does not include any kind of manual camera setting support. The screenshot below says it all. It comes from an application called “Manual Camera Compatibility” that detects whether a Lollipop enabled device will support various manual camera settings (manual focus, WB, ISO, shutter speed & RAW support). For Sony Xperia devices, the answer is that we get no support for any manual camera setting. This may change in future updates, but this is how it stands right now.

Update: Just to clarify, what we are referring to here is the Android Lollipop Camera2 API, which Google included within the Lollipop update. If a manufacturer has opened these settings, it allows third-party applications to access the full range of manual camera settings. We fully expect that Sony will continue to provide manual settings within its own camera app such as White Balance, ISO etc.

Lollipop RAW camera

  • John Zakaria

Are you serious now?! How can it be the best camera found in a smartphone?!
    # ZR owner

  • Well, oh dear. :-/ I was hoping for some more settings to play with when I try and take shots of the moon. (Seriously, I’m not kidding. My phone is my camera, I don’t own another camera.)

  • Doubleyoupee

Then what the hell have they been doing? What’s their excuse for releasing it latest of all manufacturers?

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

current firmware manually control for white balance and iso control already in manual mode. hurmmm

  • Tsakane

Sony is going to take 2 weeks to release Lollipop for a phone that’s almost EXACTLY the same as the Z3. I’m never buying a Sony phone ever again omg fuck. Z2 is just clicked .2ghz lower, but it’ll take two weeks to get Lollipop out? I hope they go bankrupt.

  • Tsakane

They suck. That’s their excuse. I mean this “Lollipop” is pretty much half Kit Kat like wtf

  • joseph carmine nero

damn it.why every OEM is ignoring this in lollipop update?

  • Naresh Gundu

Its not the end of the world. You would get it one fine day. :|

  • Ritwij

HTC didn’t ignore. My M8 has it from the very beginning :/

  • Stanley Lu

Wow seriously?! TBH I don’t get how Sony phones are getting rated as one of the best camera phone. I own a Z3, and most of the picture outcome can’t even really compare to other new phones in the market. Hate the image noise in most of the images in Auto mode (Which most people use)

  • Peter Bognar

Thet’s for the Z3 owners, who shelled out a couple hundred bucks more to have a 6-months younger phone with .2ghz more to feel the exclusivity. I think you can wait 2 weeks. Also, that’ll mean the bugs will already be known by the time the Z2 update arrives…

  • Birk Evert Stolt

…Someone should make a hitler scene parody of this.. :(

  • joseph carmine nero

    yeah.but sammy and LG did

  • Reza

Complain after complain, after sony doesn’t support for RAW on lollipop updates then what’s next??? My goodness… What the hell is happening on the planet they called Earth by now….???

  • Emir Zarith

that is why we call it as marketing strategy……

  • Dilesh Perera

    Xposed framework! :-o

  • parental92

Gosh, to be honest i dont really care about any of that camera things, i do not expect a mind blowing image either, so must you lot. looking at the processed image, its quite clear that the raw image will be a pain in the ass to edit anyway.

besides, im pretty sure more than half of you do not understand what RAW photo is :P

hope z3 series will se a notable improvement on the already momentus battery life. here are things im curious about =

    – how is the ugly dialler? is it fixed?
    -how is the battery life?
    -is it bug free?

that is all i care about. mostly the new coat of paint looks beutiful, now google apps looks like theyre belong to sony phone, unlike the dark and elegant UI before this, i can get used to that.

  • Stemro

Their “excuse” is that they wanted this update to be very stable. I guess no we’ll finally get to see how “stable” it really is after all this time… Even though many of Lollipop’s bugs were only fixed in Android 5.1 which we’ll now have to wait several MORE months to get.

  • @peterbognar:disqus @tsakane:disqus Yep, as a Z3 owner I feel nice that I’m getting the updates first. It’s not a flippant remark, I genuinely feel that tiny, teeny, tiny, itty-bitty, teeny-tiny bit better because I own the current flagship, therefore I’m “entitled” to the release first.

What difference does this make to my life overall? Nothing big whatsoever, except that I feel that Sony is being “nice” to me for getting their highest priced phone at a time that happened to coincide with me needing a new phone. #DroolingCustomerLoyaltyReinforced ;-)

  • Boonerski

For a lot of average consumers, they don’t give a fuck about this. For mobile tech enthusiasts, it’s a deal breaker. The world is a cruel place…

  • steffen gjærdingen

Well good bye z3 and hello htc one m9!
Only thing i waited for in lollipop was more manual control, only OEM who have this in android is htc and they aren’t even a camera manufacturer^^
i guess it won’t come before xperia z4 cuz that is going to be the main selling thing about that phone and then it will come for xperia z3 later.

  • Stanley Lu

…… hmmm I should go into marketing lol.

  • Oh no…
I can only say this before lollipop applied

  • steffen gjærdingen

kinda strange that htc have had it since one m8, wasn’t it supposed 5.0 enabled it? or was it their own camera chip?

  • Reon

We finally knowknow one if the things Sony has been working on that made the Lollipop update so late. Removing Features!

  • Tsakane

I bought the Z2 when it was brand new, I spent just as much as they did

  • Barend Stapelberg

FU SONY, FU! It’s the ONLY reason I waited for Lollipop. Go to hell!

  • Clarence Alvarado

One thing I noticed, we should have that manual focus, manual WB and manual ISO. Silly that app didn’t detect.

  • guitar_shredda*

how about you learn to take a proper photo first.

  • Faisal Armand

Sony, you double gaming son of a bitch!! WHY??!! TELL ME WHY, DAMMIT??!

RAW & Manual controls are the reasons I waited long enough for lollipop. But WHY??! Sony did this so people will buy their dedicated cameras? WHY??!

  • Naresh Gundu

“What difference does this make to my life overall? Nothing big whatsoever”

Is exactly what i think. If someone complains about not getting 5.0 then they should find a better OEM who gives them a timely update.

  • rzero21

All I need is the ability to control shutter speed and ISO settings. Since the aperture is pretty much fixed, it would help a lot to get control of the shutter speed since I can take long exposure shots or use ND filters to make an aircraft propeller “disappear” by compensating with the shutter speed and fixing the ISO to lowest value.

  • Adrian

Just idiots. It’s a camera phone and they don’t give us a shit… Good job Sony. I’m gonna buy an Oppo because of this.

  • This app looks like a good alternative until Sony updates the camera: It has manual shutter speed, manual focus & RAW. Can someone with Z3 lollipop review it?

  • It does. See the red cross marks.

  • Clarence Alvarado

We don’t have that manual shutter speed. So as RAW imaging.

  • @Naresh: The thing is, I’m perfectly happy with KitKat. The only thing I’m looking forward to trying is the new runtime, ART, to see if it will improve battery life, app start-up times and just run smoother overall.

Better photo algorithms would be nice too. I’m of the opinion that Sony is purposefully handicapping their phones with inferior processing algorithms so that their bottom-of-the-range cameras will still sell.

  • Stanley Lu

How about you learn what other ppl’s profession is. I’m double concentration in design and media arts and I’m a photographer.

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

Every decent sensor has it. But mostly it is controlled by camera driver automatically. It is upon the device maker to let the user set it manually.

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

I don’t think there will be any 5.1 update for for example Z2. They got their feel good news story about updating old devices already.

  • Indashio

Zip app and priv app please

  • parental92

good luck mate, with oppo find 7 stuck at 4.3 you will have the best camera experience ever (on a smartphone)

  • Vuyo Ncube

  • Snorky112

because no one cares. see iphone? people want a shooter that makes good pictures out of the box, they wont give support because YOU and 0.5% of the population want RAW

  • luigi

Bye Sony </3 i thought camera2api will help your crappy camera software but you didn't applied it on lollipop update

  • Ritwij

  • Joe

I wonder if they even gave camera software the long awaited and deserved improvement (Z1c owner here and utterly disappointed in it. So much digital noise and pixelization). Can anyone confirm the improvement from KK as opposed to L?

  • Ibrahem Salah

    Lol z2 isn’t old device

  • Itsarapong Intoum

What the hell is this anyway ?

This is screenshot from my friend who have Z3 with lolipop.

  • Max

Typical Sony. They think they know best. I want my Z3 to shoot RAW and now Android supports it, but Sony want people to keep using their substandard JPEG quality. Stupid company.

  • shhh

There’s a ND filter for smartphones?

  • Faisal Armand

share more of the settings please. The usual EV & WB slider & the place where we usually tweak the ISO, resolution, and HDR.

I’m curious to see if there’s more settings

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Sorry friend but I’m not the owner of this phone. I think Z3 owner should try it and give clarification here.

  • Amimanot

Damn… This sucked ._. Was hoping to be able to control the shutter speed and focus. Especially focus. Manual. Focus.

  • Libyan Guy

Nope ! not only SONY for now even GALAXY S5 doesn’t support these futures , I’ve checked it now on lollipop ! the most common is what the article said the futures will be for SONY’s camera app exclusively

  • Pingback: ????? ??????? 5 ??????? ??3 ???? ?????? ??????? ???? ?????? ??? | ?????()

  • parental92

i get if you want to control shutter speed, (and with ISO control), but manual focus ? why?

  • Well, no more Sony for me, I guess I’m going to try Lumia next time, because they have manual focus and all that sh*t… yep, my next phone will be Microsoft/Nokia Lumia

  • This can’t work when Sony didn’t enable it, for fuck’s sake!

  • rzero21

I haven’t seen one for Xperia but I can use the ND filters from my SLR. A 49mm is small enough to carry it with my phone whenever I want to use it.

edit: or even better, I can get some ND sheets, cut them and put it right on the back of the phone.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

My friend confirm that we still can adjust EV & WB, ISO, RES and HDR.

  • (C):stem

This is a small issue. We’ll have real troubles if the Lollipop update is buggy and unstable.

Anyway, if my Xperia Z3 compact doesn’t go like it should once it gets lollipop, I always can go back to my Nexus 5.

  • Amimanot

The autofocus is really jumpy and inconsistent (especially for capturing macro photos) and slow (for video)

  • roeshak

I never expected raw support anyway. Sony don’t even offer full manual controls never mind that. Small steps people! Let’s see them implement full controls first before we start crying out for other things.

  • Oh I thought the Sony camera app didn’t have it. Great.

  • Disappointing for sure, I would have liked to try it. But the camera will still take the excellent pictures it always has, so that’s good enough for me.

This was suppose to happen from sony they are proud of their horrible camera api and horrible algorithm and processing xperia blog make pictures comparison between kitkat vs lollipop camera images samples

  • Faisal Armand

    Thanks for the info, bud!

That pretty much confirms that we don’t have settings to shutter speed, manual focus, and RAW. <— All of which that i've been dying for since the announcement of lollipop.

Btw, just like one user here said. My phone is my camera.. For a cameraphone enthusiast like me, this is a heartbreaking news

  • Stanley08

    I’m 100% certain Z2 will get 5.1

  • SilentGod

Would someone generously buy Z3 Japan and then compare the overall aspects with Z3 International which ever Android version they use(both hardware and software, which means camera also included) then make a review of them(especially camera)

I wanna know the overall differences between them + I’m planning to buy Z3 Japan this September but still gathering budgets

  • Apoorv Deshmukh

This is disappointing indeed! Sony waited so long to release the update and could have taken more time to implement the camera 2 API.. Anyways lets hope they have done that at least for Z4

  • Azar

    wifi icon is plain ugly!

  • Ali Bach-Tobji

Is there any video shows us the new upadate in depth ?

  • Micheal Archer

It’s also possible that Sony noticed the bugs in 5.0 that are fixed in stock 5.1 and fixed them in their own software. This has happened before with Sony. Then again, Sony devices have also suffered from bugs present in their software releases…

  • Winter Soldier

fuck……. I’m waiting for manual focus. but it’s not happening.
they enable it after Z4 Launch. for 2015 Devices….

  • Micheal Archer

    Z2 probably, Z1…30% chance.

  • Sadman Khan

What I’m here to say is, Lollipop is beautiful (In My Opinion)

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    Hi friend, Here’s the evidence

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

If even Samsung did, that is a real shame for Sony.

  • Snorky112

they wont do it just for a few people, 99% of customers want a good automatic mode, and that’s all

  • Guest

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

We should make a big noise about camera features then.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    Calm down friend.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Not having those manual features support is indeed a let down. But I think what’s really matter is whether the image quality, like in Superior Auto for example, improve or not.

  • Faisal Armand

I don’t mind if there’s no RAW support, anyway. But the thing that I have always been dying for since I the first day I got my Z2 is the full manual settings, then when lollipop was announced, I was excited to death because full manual control was coming. I know the sensor has potential, I know with full manual controls I can take bat-shit awesome pictures and most importantly, IMAGE PROCESSING ISN’T BAD LIKE MOST PEOPLE SAYS! <— that of course after I studied your statement & looking for evudence during our previous conversation :)

For a cameraphone enthusiast like me, this news is close to a living nightmare :(

  • Faisal Armand

    Thanks, dude :)

  • Mario Junior

    Fu** you sony!

I do not see more reasons to upgrade to lolipop . The RAW function was my main reason to upgrade .

  • raju

still set ISO manually to for example 50 or 100 in the cameras manual mode via talk.Sonymobile

  • DBS

As someone who actually came from Nokia Lumias (no Microsoft Lumias for me, thanks. The platform is a nightmare without Nokia) I can tell you that the camera is THE ONLY thing you’ll enjoy.
The OS is way too restricted customization-wise, but the worst is the app situation. You either have no apps you want or when you have, you have very very very inferior experiences with them.

I still keep some Nokias along with my Z3C (alternating, Nokia 808, 1020 or 930 depending on where I’m going and what I’m wearing), but I really only use them for photography.

  • Abdul Ghani

All lollipop features now available except they removed all lollipop camera features and copy and paste their pure shit camera software now missing is lollipop camera features and fast capture in all conditions specially in low light which is given by ( htc iPhone and shitsung) when will Sony learn that all Xperia z phone has zero potential in their software algorithm processing

  • Snorky112

no, they actually make good pictures, stop whining

  • Snorky112

Pls stop being ridiculous guys, on a scale from 0 to 100, the top 5 smarpthone in photo are XZ2, XZ3, GS5, i6, i6s,
they get 79,80,81,82,83 /100, so please, not being BEST doesn’t mean you’re CRAP.
XZ3 makes excellent pictures and that’s it, Z4 will make better and so on, no need to whine and flood every blog of the internet

  • brick

Maybe if a lot of users request it they will implement it? Start a petition? I’m not interested in raw personally but I’ll definitely sign it since more options are always a good thing.

  • Luís Alberto Pérez

Then you should had bought a Nexus device.

  • Stemro

Don’t be so pessimistic. The Z2 is a pretty new flagship still, it came out just slightly less than a year ago. Because it is particularly similar to the Z3 I’m sure it’ll get the update too!

And you can be sure that if they don’t update the Z2 anymore they’ll get negative reactions about abandoning a new flagship phone so soon…

  • asdasdasd

Look at the z3s sensor than look at a DSLRs sensor, how does a sensor that small be better than a big ass lense?

  • Stanley Lu

Please read, i’m comparing with other phone cameras in my original statement. Not with my DSLR…

  • Simo

    wow white balance… so?

  • brick

They don’t know how to take photos and blame it on the camera. It’s not the camera that makes a good photographer.

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Just tryout 5.0.2 manual control same with 4.4.4 but the image kinda a bit wider and noise level awesome

  • pytajnik

I’m tired of being constantly disappointed by them, Z3 is my last device from Sony.

  • The only reason why I was really excited for Lollipop.
Out of all manufacturers to not include the API, it had to be Sony…? I was hoping I could do a tutorial video for photography with the updated controls, but there don’t appear to be any. Tough luck.

And I’m pretty sure Sony will just skip the 4K and 120fps video on the Xperia Z1 as well for the update. I’m seriously disappointed now. They could’ve made their devices stand out from the crowd so easily, and they just decide not to. I’m not surprised that they’re losing ground on the smartphone market anymore.

  • brick

  • Snorky112

  • YuuriAyano

Sony keeps disappointing us week after week

  • sk

Both white balance and ISO already present in sony kitkat camera application.Manual focus needs slider and focus magnification for macro and close up shots,i think that will be available after xperia z4 anouncement.

  • Meeeeeeeeeeeee

All previous functions of the camera are still working, including manual settings.

What this app check is if manual settings are working for new RAW format, arriving with Lollipop.

Noone of the Snapdragon 801 phones have support of RAW (the Z3, the G3, the S5,the M8 …). They doesn’t all have access to RAW manual settings, and they will be working like

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    So… Zzz see you later.

  • Pingback: [Q] Will Custom ROMs allow the Lollipop Camera API to work? topic | mobile()

  • Ingus Keivs

As far as I know, the Nokia top devices had that filter builted in.

  • Kaostheory

Although it would be good if the Z4 supports it, hope they didn’t omit it just to make the Z4 more of an upgrade. Was the only feature of Lollipop that I really wanted.

  • garygary

Guys, what manual settings are you talking about? You don’t have manual settings on phone. You can’t change the aperture, because the aperture is fixed, you can’t change the shutter speed, because you can’t change the aperture. The only thing you can change is ISO sensitivity. And that is not manual mod.
The only thing i wanted from Lollipop is the ability to shoot RAW, because that’s how i used to with my DSLR. I want to decide how much sharpening, how much noise reduction, how much saturation, how much contrast i need. But i didn’t get that from Lollipop, so i probably won’t update.

Actually pretty much not a single phone updated to lollipop got the new api from galaxy s4 and s5 to lg g3. I think HTC one m8 got it. Why don’t you sell the z3 and get the m8? You’ll have to deal with overheating, glitchy firmware, no waterproof, lag, awful battery life but hey, you’ll be able to snap slightly better photos in manual raw assuming your photography technique isn’t utter shit

  • SimonPieman

Laughing at all the totally retarded comments in this section. Quite clearly (for anyone with a brain), the camera app on Sony phones and tablets have supported most of these features BEFORE lollipop brought them to the masses.

What sony havent done, either for resource or quality reasons is changed their existing camera app to use the new google APIs rather than their own, but taken the path of updating their camera driver to work with lollipop.

It’s possible this was the path of least resistance

  • George UK

To all the idiots in this comment section that support Sony when people complain about this issue: We are not pissed because Sony didn’t ADD a feature. we’re pissed because Sony completely REMOVED a ready-to-use free feature provided by Google. We’re not just Sony Xperia users, we’re Android users, and Sony insulted us, personally.
It’s a spit to Google’s face and to ours. It’s like the dirty shit Apple does, the “NO! We’ll do it OUR WAY, because fuck the community!”
Hope that cleared something out to you. You do NOT remove features and expect your supporters to stay all fine and dandy!

  • This was the main reason I wanted Lollipop on a Sony phone, a superior camera hardware with manual control can blow away anything. But nooooo, they just had to remove it. I hope they’ll at least add a new camera add-on that’ll make use of the new camera API, otherwise, gonna have to say good bye to my precious Z1C or buy a decent camera…

Exactly, and even once you do have your RAW files, what are you going to do with them? You’ll need something like Lightroom that supports HTC’s RAW format (all RAW formats are slightly different from manufacturer to manufacturer) to be able to render and tweak your images.

RAW support is pointless for around 99% of customers and around 99% of phones. What what be better is manual shutter control and a better superior auto mode.

  • Wozn2

You don’t want to be running an alpha or beta of Lollipop, even the released version (5.0, 5.01) had issues on my N5.

  • David Bugyi

It’s a general API for android devices, not just Nexus series. E.g. OnePlus has it as well and it’s no Nexus device

  • Wozn2

Most of the people complaining about lack of RAW support wouldn’t know what to do with a RAW file if they got one!

Sony’s time would be better spent making the superior auto mode better and maybe giving control over shutter speed.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Can you please give me the link for that discussion ?

  • David Bugyi
  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

This was there all the time. We’re talking manual exposure, ISO selection, etc.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Thx you. Well I don’t who exactly I should trust now. Better to try by myself.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

ISO Selection is still able to adjust like usual.

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

The same crappy camera app. ISO buried deep in the settings. Not nice, Sony!

  • Snorky112

yea and the 99% of this site aren’t even 1% of total customer count

  • Pingback: Sony Xperia Z3 e Xperia Z3 Compact: niente API fotografiche di Lollipop | Android Blog Italia()

  • Igor Eisberg
Check before you comment. “android.hardware.camera2” is an API included with any initial Lollipop package (it’s a basic part of the API Level 21), so yeah, they didn’t include it, AKA removed it.

  • brick

Hope dumb are you? Sony didn’t remove jack. Do you even know what api means? The Sony camera is using Sony apis, using Google’s android apis means rewriting the entire camera software for what, making a small minority able to take slightly better photos assuming they actually know what the fuck they’re doing. I’m under the impression that most people complaining about no raw were deluded thinking it would magically make the camera much better. It’s not like lollipop automatically comes with raw support for every camera out there. Educate yourself before blaming.

  • Igor Eisberg

You idiot basically saying that Sony was lazy enough not to rewrite their camera app to use the API. Good, just makes my point more valid.
“Educate yourself before blaming.”? Who the fuck are you, mister Ph.D?

  • brick

That’s because nobody added raw suppor, not just Sony. In fact most manufactures (like Samsung) didn’t even bother to add multi user.

  • brick

Lel, you didn’t say that at all. You said they removed a ready to use feature, which is 2 times false because they didn’t remove it and it isn’t ready to use. Your dear Samshit didn’t even implement multi user let alone raw, instead implemented a ton of bugs that required multiple incremental rollorollouts. Sony’s kitkat seems to be flawless so far and comes with all the new features except raw for the reasons I explained above. Now I educated your dumb ass but next time please educate yourself before abusing your freedom of speech.

  • Cool

  • brick

Which phone are you going to buy? Unless it’s note 4, lg g3 or iPhone 6 then you’re going to have an inferior camera regardless of raw or whatever. And to blow anything away you need to have a good photography technique, more controls mean you need more knowledge and expertise to make anything better than stock.

  • Igor Eisberg

“Your dear Samshit”? I don’t like Samsung devices, nor its UI, I was making a point that their UI is heavily cusomized, yet they implemented it much faster. “Sony’s kitkat seems to be flawless so far”, I bet your blank mind meant Lollipop, not KitKat.
You educated my ass? What the useful F did you do for this community? Your alias says it all – a “brick” for a brain.

  • brick

Using ad hominem and picking on small mistakes when ypur arguments have been destroyed. Typical of dumb people.

Why don’t you just admit you were wrong in claiming they removed it it?

About Samsung, they implemented it in a broken bugged state with even more missing features.

  • Note 4 or Galaxy S6, or even the Note 5 depending on how Lollipop will be. Well, my next upgrade won’t be a Sony of phone that’s for sure if things are going down hill. It’s really a pity though, they have like the best built quality, best phone I have so far :(

  • DanB

Maybe because they have this settings in their proprietary camera app from like… forever?

  • Igor Eisberg

OK kid, wasted enough time on a troll like yourself. Bye bye.

  • brick

I come from galaxy s4 and I’d rather go back to a Nokia 3310 than dealing with another Samsung phone. By the way, their cameras are only marginally better than Sony and none of them support raw manual, and their proprietary mode has the same settings as sony’s camera. Lollipop has completely destroyed my s4,battery life gone, laggy,no new apps, etc. Good luck on Samsung.

  • Nah man, the new Samsung so far looks good but I’ll have to toy with it first though in the demo units. I don’t mind the raw support, as long as there’s long exposure control, 4K recording, and slow motion recording that it’ll have cuz I highly doubt that the Z1C will get them even though it support them spec wise.

  • EddyKilowatt

Poof. My interest in Sony, hanging by a thread waiting on the Lollipop release, just utterly vanished. Such a shame… as an imaging powerhouse Sony definitely has a niche to claim in the phone market, but seems to lack the wit or agility to do so.

  • Peter Waegemans

if you knew what camera Raw was you’d be as disappointed as I am right now.
It’s not just a little ISO switching or white balancing.
It’s true control over the deepness of your colors and its range. It’s about choosing the amount of compression once you save it to jpg or png. It’s about bringing back details the rubbish Sony camera cuts out.

On my dslr I wouldn’t dream of shooting in jpg.
Comparing this with the horrible compression on the Sony camera, I was really interested reading that Google added it to lollipop. It’s a real shame that Sony removed it. We should continue fighting for it, the same way we kept asking for the upgrade.
I won’t let OEM’s tell me what I can or cannot do.

  • steffen gjærdingen

Some new samples from the HTC one M9 here:

i think they use a toshiba sensor, and is it just me or is a lot of details here!

  • steffen gjærdingen

you mean it sucks that htc implemented it?

  • steffen gjærdingen

yeah the standard settings still exists, what people was hoping for was manual shutter speed, manual focus ( i know you can tap to focus, but it having a hard time to lock on) etc!

i bet this will be the key selling points for ppl to buy the xperia z4, if its not arriving with the z4 i don’t see it coming at all.

  • Getting Mine

No I mean it’s a benefit to owners of the One M8 and possibly the One M9 if they didn’t leave it out of the software this time. I almost got the One M8 for this very reason. I knew I would be able to tinker with the settings but I waited out for the Xperia Z3 and look where that’s gotten But at least the Z3 takes some very good pics with Sony’s slightly manual settings.

  • steffen gjærdingen

yeah, almost the same for me, i tried my friends one m8 and love the manual mode, but buyd the z3 in hopes for more manual settings there

  • Getting Mine

Yeah the only thing that I can hope for is that Sony updates the settings without the Camera2 API changes. I wonder how HTC was able to implement all those functions except RAW image capture way before Lollipop was introduced. Maybe Sony can do the same. I doubt it though. The Z4 should have it though.

  • Maxx Tan

Can someone start a petition regarding this?

  • Gary Ohanian

    Sorry, Brick is right.

    Have a Snickers.

  • parental92

crippled? in what way, now RAW imaging . tell me , what will you do with it . . . just being curious

  • brick

I’m pretty sure none of the phones which got updated to lolli had this feature implemented. I know for sure Samsung didn’t implement it and neither did LG. Manufacturers will probably start to implement it on newer models, if ever. Implementing this feature requires an entire rewriting of the camera driver and I doubt many are going to bother. It’s not just a feature that they can enable or disable at will.

  • Simos Katsiaris

N5 was a bad SoC to begin with, runs ok on Z2,Z3, the Z tabs, nexus 4 and 7 2012, blame Qualcomm for bad binaries

  • Simos Katsiaris

I had it on my Z2 tab one day before you ;p

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

Only in the Stock camera app, as it was on 4.4.4? FV-5 for example did allow me to select the ISO, but when the picture was taken, the settings was ignored by the camera. ISO selection works on 5.0.2 Cyanogenmod. So it is blocked for some reason on the Stock.

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

Autoawesome pictures produces blurred photos for me every time. It was very disappointing, that the camera button turned that image destroyer mode on every time when it was pressed.

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

    Camera2 API: 30%

  • Rikard Jerner

man… someone needs a bag of valium and education.

  • brick

That’s a great idea! Dump your phone with a camera in the top 3 best ones available on the market with Note4 and iPhone6 and buy a phone with an awful camera not even in the top 10. You’re a fuckin genius Adrian!

  • Sashimi

no, rather a laughing spanish guy version… Better suits how Sony is fucking up its customers…

  • parental92

oh god dont fret about RAW, jesus . . . .

  • parental92

ahaha good for you ! :) ill downgrade now , want to flash rooted version from xda

  • drifter77

I just hope the Lollipop update fixes the damned overheating issues for the Z3 Compact.

  • Guest

    LMAO the application itself FAILS

  • Guest

and than… than we said No manual controls he hehehehe and than we said… no ISO selection, only if you use our app… chachacha

  • Simos Katsiaris

i rooted just fine with fastboot cm kernel, flash lollipop stock kernel + super su, take 1 minute and a pc

  • steffen gjærdingen

Full manual controls, with shutter speed adjustable to 2sec, a pro mode is coming later with shutter control up to 8sec.
Tested the m9 in the store yesterday, and the algorithms is a lot better than sony at full res.

Hoping to see manual shutter etc for the z3 soon.

  • comercy

so no one start a thread to complain about this problem in sony mobile forum? maybe we need to understand what we need from their future update.

  • Chefo Todorov

Fuck off guys won’t buy sony anymore. Got z3 compact right now with 21mpx sensor and we were waiting about 2 months delay for what?! One big shit I was waiting for shutter speed custom settings with this manual camera for lollipop and now what am I understand?? Nothing new just pissed up your cool sony sensor of the camera by throwing it with some fucked up noise reduction which just fcks up the image quality if its not completely sunny even if its not too dark there is too much noise or quality loss.. Also there is not anymore kill all aps with one click I have to kill them one by one like retarded iOS user, also can’t move fuckin bluethoot enabling/disabling option from fast settings and put on the top mobile data cuz no one uses anymore this fucking bluetooth. Sony in INCREDIBLY STUPID in letting down its customers ESPECIALLY since the hardware is actually. REALLY excellent

Sony suppose to improve their smartphone camera interface where the user can have more manual settings and simplify the camera interface

All the options are there. Only shutter speed and raw imaging are absent. Camera is already super. I don’t think there is any phone out there that supports these with stock camera app

Shutter speed and aperture? – no thought not.

  • Case

So is like having a car with a brake but no accelerator pedal or steering wheel; not like Sony don’t also make cameras and would find it hard to implement full manual camera control, in fact one might even expect it from them, oh no hang on, maybe it would effect their compact camera sales…

  • Case

Sorry Sony want us to buy one of their compacts to be able to use actual basic camera setting like shutter speed.

  • zakwilson

This is sufficient to keep me from buying one – a real shame since Sony is the only player in the high-end compact market.
