Has Android 5.1 just been certified for the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact?

by XB on 4th April 2015

in Android, Firmware, Xperia Z3 series

wpid-img_20150404_124249.jpgSony Mobile may have just certified Android 5.1 Lollipop for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact judging by new listings. Firmware build 23.2.A.0.278 has been certified by the PTCRB for the Xperia Z3 (D6653) and Xperia Z3 Compact (D5833). Given the move from build format ‘23.0’ for Android 4.4.4 KitKat to ‘23.1’ for Android 5.0.2 Lollipop,  there is a strong likelihood that ‘23.2’ will be Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Update: There is the possibility that this is not Android 5.1 after all, judging by this handset detection listing. (Thanks Aaron!)

Thanks to all that sent this in!

  • Great ! :D

  • Stanley Lu

Now that’s jumping from last to first !

  • Ritwij

Still waiting for 5.0.2 on my Z2 (yes, I know I can flash it)

  • Lukáš Pávl

So that’s how it’s going to be now? Update Z3 and Z3c to 5.1 and leave other devices on 4.4? And that’s ladies and gentlemen why is SONY in red numbers… Don’t get me wrong i’m not hating, i love SONY but i’m bit upset costumer who is concerned about these steps.
(Oh maybe that means skipping 5.0.2?? I hope so)

  • smileman

well, maybe this explains the big delay in getting 5.0 to Z3s outside of the Baltics and Scandinavia. would be great to go straight to 5.1.

has anyone in the UK received 5.0 yet on their Z3?

  • KSR hemanth

In india still we are waiting for 5.0.2 when it will come to xperia Z3

  • Kiwison

    Not yet

  • Kiwison

Yes every time I comment that someone says flash it.. WE KNOW THAT

  • DBS

Well, for all those who updated to Lollipop, I sure hope so, because unlike Samsung and HTC, Sony didn’t bother to fix the mess Google did with the volume by removing the mute option, despite the months it took them to release the update.

  • niklas

What is new in Android 5.1?

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Strange, it doesn’t say anything above that only the Z3 family is getting 5.1. And Sony hasn’t announced anything about android 5.1 and how only the Z3 is getting it. So where did you get that idea from? The Z3 family is getting 5.1 because they’re the current flagship, ever think of that?

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Hopefully s “clear all” option in the multi-task

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

If it makes you feel better I’m pretty sure no one in the US has gotten the official Lollipop from Sony either

  • Another fanboy

skip 5.0, go for 5.1. goodjob Sony

  • bilomar

Great, now people can wait another year for 5.1 XD

  • ayub407

    My Z3 Dual (D6633) didn’t get the 5.0 update and now 5.1 is certified for Z3 (D6653).

  • Olger Shaqiraj

It’s good idea to skip 5.02 but worth it?
    Any camera performance?
    Something new on 5.1

  • Sweggity

Rooted the phone and I have clear all. :D

  • ibolito

Actually they did. I have the official update on my Z3 Compact and just like it was on Kit Kat, there is a vibrate and mute mode, working as it did before. They just added the priority option of Google’a pure Lollipop on top of that. The only thing missing is the volume control on the power button long press. But the volume button work just as usual.

  • ibolito

In France a lot of people including me, already had the official 5.0.2 update for unbranded devices. So they don’t skip it you’ll get yours within days if your phone is unbranded. If you bought it from an operator you’ll have to wait for them to release it, it’s not Sony’s will :(

  • Ritwij

I know. I check XperFirm everyday

  • Lukáš Pávl

I meant that they update Z3 & Z3c to 5.1 now, before finishing updating other devices (Z, Z1, ZU etc…) to atleast 5.0.2. It seems a bit odd don’t you think? It’s like starting to read new book even though you didn’t finished your previous one.

And then what are you waiting for?

  • chrisay

Have wait for 4 month… Everyday I do the same thing (click ‘refresh’ button)

  • Ritwij

    An OTA update.

  • DBS

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure? Because that’s not what I’ve been reading from people that accepted to update to Lollipop.

Sony’s KitKat had “Sound, Vibrate and Mute”. Lollipop changed that to Google’s Sound, Priority and None (or Silent as Sony called it). But apparently “Silent” doesn’t silence the phone at all, it still vibrates when a notification comes in (as did the old “Vibrate” mode)?

I haven’t updated to Lollipop and have no intention of updating my Z3C to it, but from what I’ve been reading, many people are regretting it and the volume control change is one of those reasons.

  • David Hvatov

Hope they fix equalizer, because it’s not working anymore (except in walkman). In 4.4.4 equalizer worked without problems!

  • Azar

You! You read my mind! *slapping my face with my Tab Z*

  • ?? ???

Where the **** is lollipop ota..

  • DanielGearSolid

    I got it.

Unlocked z3 bought from Sony store US

    Guess that doesn’t count

  • Galijot

Just don’t press volume down and hold it (then there will be no sound but it will vibrate) instead just touch silent and it won’t vibrate.

  • Stanley Lu

How do you root Z3 with lock bootloader?

  • (C):stem

I guess an OTA update is faster and more efficient than a flashed .tft file…

  • ibolito

Absolutely sure, when you hold volume down it stops to vibrate mode. Then, if you touch the “silent” button it goes perfectly silent, no sound neither vibration. Look at my screenshots below.

  • Ritwij

Dude, I paid Sony for my phone and future services which include updates that Sony has to give me. I didn’t pay them so that I’ve to flash firmwares manually.

Btw, it’s .ftf and not .tft ?

  • 5u5m1t

Too bad the lollipop update for the UK hasn’t come yet…

  • Simone Beccaro

Italy has it, I got the update last week on my Z3c…but beside the performances I kinda miss Kk cause Llp had many different changes, but not always in a better way. I could say that imho Kk were a better os on Sony devices…now battery status is incohoprensible and I hating new volume settings, hope Sony would make some steps back about things that were actually better on KK

  • David

FYI you paid SONY Mobile just for device and aftermarket support which includes only bugfixes but nothing more. 4.4.4 and 5.* it’s just SONY wishes.
All contacts and agreements of Sony and Google and Mobile Allianz are not touches you.

  • Pingback: Anonymous()

  • DBS

So basically if you want the phone to vibrate only, you’ll have to keep the volume pressed down until it reaches “silent” but if you press “silent” it silences it completely. Is that it?

Ok, it’s not as bad as people have been saying but Yeah, that’s a terrible implementation. Yet another reason to stay on KitKat.

  • DBS

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I’m glad it’s not as crappy as stock Android as people have been saying.
Still, it’s pretty shitty compared to KitKat’s solution.
Yet another reason for me to stay on KitKat.

  • bilomar

Yup, that’s the only problem I have.

  • Galijot

    Yep that’s it.

  • Saiful Islam

What happend to Z2 ( D6503) lolipop 5.0.2 update next week? Did Sony forgot there Z2 Model? Where have gone there existing about Z2? Is there Next week not completed or that means the next of the next year? Why do sony do harresment to people by promising false? Who’s gonna ans our questions? Because sony also been careless and deaf.

  • (C):stem

    Thanks for correcting me.

And you could use your “paying” argument with Sony. They should care about it. Make your money worth it, keep waiting, that’s the spirit!

  • Shaik Ilyas

So Sony indirectly saying us to update to the latest device and we will give you latest but slowest updates.

I will if there was a genie so that I can get the latest from sony every six months.

  • (C):stem

Again, late in updates isn’t a new thing on this company. Everybody knows that Sony is a bitch updating since it was Sony Ericsson: delayed updates to their flagships and I don’t want to talk about the midrange and entry level phones. Knowing that, we the customers have the final decision. I was aware of this and I still got my Z3c because, after all, this phone is beautiful and I hate big phones as hell, so Z3c is just perfect for me. And it doesn’t hurt to learn how to use tools as flashtool to accelerate some things and get a new Android version ASAP, I don’t understand all the hate to it.

  • (C):stem

… And Google is working in Android 5.1.1 already.
    XD

  • Ritwij

It’s easy. I’m an Xperia user since 2011. I’ve flashed so many firmwares but it’s very lame. Changing the region of your firmware just adds up bloatware.

  • Ritwij

It counts if you have a customized US firmware.

  • (C):stem

…As if the official version for your region wouldn’t have any…

BTW I consider that ain’t a valid argument anymore. Hardware nowadays is able to run smooth like silk, Android is more optimized to control the background running processes and those days when we only had 2 gbs of internal space are history. Besides, Sony’s UI is one of the more polished interface around, ask people with other brand phones (too cliche to say samsu…) how they suffer with heavy and slow UIs

  • Ibrahem Salah

    Dude Use flashtool :3

  • ?????????

wo cao 5.0 dou ta ma mei lai

  • Anel Mustafoski

And at the end,we’ll get nothing ;)

  • (C):stem

    Probably :/

  • ????????

It reminded me of a concurrent update Sony Xperia Z1 compact and Nexuses to Android 4.4.4

  • lovebmw

Why not, this would be a result of longer life cycle, other Wise, this post would have been about when is z4 getting 5.1 and all its negative jazz….. I am glad they are back to their senses and can now deliver focused timely efforts rather than play catch up with the new models.

  • ????????

Then why roll out the update now, if another MAJOR update is expected within a few days-weeks?..

  • Naresh Gundu

    Oh wow, I mean seriously??

  • ZXcorr

I still havent got the 5.0. for my Z3 Compact (D5833)

  • Sachin Gautam

WTf is going on, no lollipop for others and certifying 5.1 for Z3, u r loosing a customer btw bye sony

  • AcidGambit

I haven’t even received 5.0 on my D5833 yet, actually I don’t think anyone has

  • kido

    Same here

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I’m a little annoyed but glad we’re getting it. I’m especially thrilled that the Xperia Z is still getting support. Hopefully Sony at least gets the Xperia Z to a stable 5.1 before stopping… Then again, I hope they can keep the updates coming

  • RonaldLaw

At least those who have Z2, Z3 can flash to lollipop 5.0.2, but what about Z1 and Z? Sony didn’t even release the firmware to those nordic countries for testing. OMG, being a OCD patient of system update, I’ve already been through too much. I know I shouldn’t whine like this but i cannot help myself.

  • Constantine

There are different teams working on different models, and some do their job faster. And no wonder 5.1 comes so soon, because jump from 5.0.2 to 5.1 is not the same as jump from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2, don’t you think?

  • cembo

Does the timer work in silent mode? So will it wake you up?

  • danny wood

I also have an unlocked Z3 6603 from Sony store, got 5.02 on Monday via Sony PC companion. I’m in Toronto.

  • DanielGearSolid

    the two Danny’s got it

    thats cool

  • Malcolm

I’m a little confused, but aren’t you supposed to have it in 5.0.2 as well? I definitely have it on my Z3 after the update.

  • xl77

still we can use our xperia phone even ics inside it.
don’t bother push it to much…
because if lolipop being release for your phone in one hour and your die in the middle of update.
better patient and hope you have time to use.

  • freezxp

Just press the volume button to show the bar, and u can make it vibrate or sound by tapping on the bell/vibrate icon.. Not need to keep pressing the volume down.. If u want to make it silent, touch the silent tab..

  • Carlos W. H. Sun

Certed means not-fucking-thing. Enough hearing news like this.

  • Aditya Thakur

Yes….5.1 has been certified but only certified not released and I think, it will be left as a certified product.

  • Aditya Thakur

You have a chance of flashing it…but my Z1 has no other way to have lollipop

  • Amel_Marie

If those are not 5.1, then what would those be? 5.1.1? Yeah right, even 5.0.2 hasn’t rolled out thoroughly.

  • Ritwij

  • Ritwij

Z3 (D6653) and Z3 Compact (D5833) didn’t get Lollipop anywhere. So I’m guessing they will get 5.1 directly.

  • Ritwij

    Dude stop defending Sony

  • Ritwij

They said “next week” on 30th March, so that week starts on 6th April and ends on 12th April. So, I’m hoping we would surely get Lollipop before 12th April. I’m a disappointed Z2 user too.

  • Galijot

    Yes it works.

  • My Z3’s battery lasts less with lollipop, and you?

  • Amel_Marie

Looked like Sony updated from East to West, the UK still hasn’t got the update yet for the Z3 or the Z3c

  • Stanley08

The currently released one was rushed anyways, they was always gonna be another update soon…

  • Lukáš Pávl

Well actually jumping from 4.4.4 to 5.1 globally would make more sense than updating few devices in specific regions and leave others behind. But yeah i see your point.

  • Ibrahem Salah

    Remove them -_-

  • Ritwij

I don’t think the baltic region has D6653

Nevermind android bloody 5.1 I’m still waiting for 5 on my Z3 in the UK. Our Galaxy S5 is already on it (and an older phone) and the Htc One M8 is also on it. First they told us that it would be early this year. Then February. March. April. Sony are just pathetic at giving out updates. F***ing useless.

  • Niels d. G.

It means that at least they’re working on it and there is a good chance of it reaching our phones in the relatively near future.

  • ????????

    Xperiablog, about the “Update:”…
I own a Z1 compact with the latest SOFTWARE. The same listing says 14.4.A.0.157 is 5.0.2.
    http://www.handsetdetection.com/properties/viewheader/Sony/D5503/551e3514b16932de52af1c1e

  • Amel_Marie

Yup, i hope sony doesnt make regret to buy their flagship haha

  • On the one hand, at least in part sorry. But, if you had the Xperia Z, for example, you would speak differently ) .
For the producer sell the latest models is only a plus. Well, he “encouraged” to buy the latest models under the guise of updating these models. And for a buyer it is unfair.
Yesterday Z2 received one version of the build number of the OS, and today another version (for Russia it this way: yesterday – 23.1.A.0.690_R2C, today – 23.1.A.0.690_R4C). But Z3-series is not far behind.. Yesterday the build number was 23.1.A.0.690 version R6C, and today – the build number is 23.1.A.0.726 the same version.

And I updated my Z1 compact without the participation of Sony :)) My firmware was 14.4.A.0.157_R4C(RU), and now it is 14.4.C.0.114_R8C(JP). http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/03/19/xperia-j1-compact-d5788-announced-sonys-first-sim-free-xperia-for-japan/#comment-1954809408

But not even one of the Z3 D6653 variant is updated.

  • I know.. Z3D also not receive updates.
It seems to me that the Malaysian region will receive the update one of the first to D6653.

    Because you’re getting 5.0.2 not 5.0

  • Kaostheory

Sony is the first to get 5.0.2 not sure why you’re complaining. I’m way happier about the more stable 5.0.2 than the buggy 5.0.
