New Lollipop update (14.5.A.0.270) certified for Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and Z Ultra

by XB on 8th May 2015

in Firmware, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1

Xperia Z1_14.5.A.0.270A new Android Lollipop firmware update with build number 14.5.A.0.270 has been certified by the PTCRB for all variants of the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra. This compares to current build version 14.5.A.0.242. The likelihood is that the update brings the same new bug-fixing features found in the recent update for the Xperia Z2/Z3 series, along with the new clear all button for recent apps. We’ll let you know once it starts to roll.

Xperia Z1_14.5.A.0.270

Thanks Vasilis K!

  • Boonerski

    Yay~! A “Clear All” button! Yay~! Haaaah…

  • Deki

Finally! I hope that I will get this one! Can’t wait! :)

  • Fahim geyas

I thought this certification is for Xperia z.. Bad luck shit..

  • Vasilis K.

    You’re welcome! ;)

  • P9

    XZ for next pls.

  • Govindaraj Meena

Sony told early 2015 now this is may. so early 2016 available Lollipop my Zr in India.good customer service.

  • Deki

Do you want firmware with bugs or bug-less firmware? I still didn’t get the first update, so I am waiting…

  • Raj Singh

Good to know and this is important because there are some bugs that affect performance and experience.
Sidenote: Where’s the Z Ultra successor?

  • Tweety

Thank you for this announcement. I’m still frustrated by the silence from Sony. Was is so hard to write that new upgrade is on its way? I remember when I was waiting from 4.3 on Xperia SP. It took two and half months and at least two version certified by the PTCRB. It began on Christmas 2013 and ended in mid February 2014. So, it is better not to know about any new version and be pleasanlty surprised than be waiting in vain for months.

  • Patrick Edmundson

Great. Maybe this will address the tethering (hotspot) issue I brought up in another thread which I still can’t resolve by downgrading to kitkat because the Flashtool doesn’t freaking work.

  • DrKrFfXx

Hoping this update corrects the sluggish app switching and general poor performance on the Ultra.

  • Keyvan Ghanbary

every time I switch from google chrome or Boom Beach to home All of the icons disapears and start to loading one by one…I think its be cause of new UI

  • BarelyBlurred

Lol, I have yet to recive the first update..

  • ShinOrochiX

Problem with Sony is that they take long AND provide buggy firmware. From my experience there has not been an almost certain bug-free firmware from Sony since Gingerbread.

  • Ayad Fahos

When will get this update in z3 dual sony

  • Celio P. Filho

Again and Again updates for the Z3 after that Z2, and now Z1 again. And, we’re still waiting for the update to C6603 (yuga/Z) and C6503 (odin/ZL). Damn Sony, what you said about few weaks again?

  • u fanboy?

Yeah same problem here on my Z1. Every time i minimize an app and then open it, it redraws itself.
I think Lollipop firmware is not keeping the application in background. It is very frustrating and Sony should fix all of it ASAP.

  • Burak

when i restart my z1c, the recent apps aren’t cleared by itself. I didn’t have this problem in kitkat. does every phone with lollipop have this problem?
by the way, if i don’t clear recent apps, does battery drain fast because of this?

  • Vahid Sanati

    I am experiencing this too.

  • Andre Lemard

That’s a lollipop feature. The recent apps list is persistent. As far as I have experienced it doesn’t cause any battery drain on my Z1.

  • Keyvan Ghanbary

Yeah I hope they fix it asap…I have Z3 Dual (5.0.2) too and never saw act like this. maybe this problem because of low available ram on Z Ultra.

  • Burak

    thank you.
clear all function is going to be perfect solution for throng of recent apps.

  • Burak

    thank you.
clear all function is going to be perfect solution for throng of recent apps

  • Arda Akca

I also have the same problem. Sony should fix it imediately.Z Ultra became laggy.

  • ??. ????????
  • brick

You noobs really need to learn how memory management works in Android.

  • brick

They literally never said few weeks for first z series phones.

  • Celio P. Filho

Are u retarded? They did after the first update release for Z Ultra and T2. Look on Sony Blog. If you wanna talk some bullshit keep it to yourself

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

I hope they fixed those sound and vollume bugs on Z1 also.

  • bahar_b

z ultra and android is the best combination created by sony.
If other 6.44inch with 810 came out i will buy it to replace it.

  • Yasiru Theekshana

Hope this will Fix the Battery Draining Issue on Z1

  • HAWX

Well Z Ultra certanly unique device from Sony. But some people discussed about the eegonomics and the inappropriate UI of the device compared to it’s sizes. But I think It definitely fills a certain place in the market and that’s the important thing.

Snapdragon 810 is not great processor compared to price you pay for. It looks great on the paper but think why Samsung dont used it in S6 and LG G4 used 808. I hope Sont won’t use 810 neither in the upcoming flagships.

  • Sandeep Kumar
  • fried_egg

you know if EE do finally get round to updating the software before I replace my launch day Z1 with whatever is launched in the autumn by Sony…. it had better f’n work after all the time they have taken to do it

  • RoberMC

In fact the Z Ultra was an Ultra-Fail for Sony, it seems sales didn’t go well. I t is hard to say if there will ever be a sucessor.

  • RoberMC

Samsung does not use the SD810 because they have to justify the development of their Exynos, so they use it whenever possible. And who knows what happened with the LG G4?, maybe they could not get enough units of the SD810 as they are using it in the LG G-Flex 2.

The fact is that the 810 is the most powerful arm processor now a days (well maybe only the Tegra has some better 3D gaming performance).

  • hansip

Couldn’t agree more, but definitely an Ultra winner for the users that uses it (including me). That’s a shame but seeing people like Nexus 6, maybe the next Ultra with 6.2 inch will be more acceptable for the market.

  • hansip

Yes that is how Lollipop works. They are so document centric that recent app is more equivalent for recent docs. Actually i much prefer how Things work in Kitkat rather than Lollipop.

  • Lazar Mladenovic

Just remove stupid small apps feature! No one uses it and it makes recent apps menu ugly

  • Rune Christiansen

I use it for calculating things in other apps, the timer, count down, flash light, etc… So there you go ;)

  • Azazel

Yeah, some variants in some countries still didn’t get the 1st update, hopefully they’ll make this one available soon.

  • Alex

Now in the process of backing up and going back to KitKat 4.4.4 (14.4.A.0.157) as Lollipop has simply ruined my Z1 Compact: dreadful battery life (down to 50% by midday!), non-working LED notifications, no lock screen widgets (admittedly not Sony’s fault), no longer being able to put the phone into silent mode via the hardware volume buttons, but worst of all, WiFi access points that previously connected to fine in 4.4 no longer work! And also sending and receiving of text messages is shocking at best. The only things I like are the charging animation showing a percentage when the phone is off and the notifications system. I will just have to be happy to stay on KitKat.

  • rishabh singh

Why Sony is not updating thr Sony Xperia Sp in lollipop??

  • HAWX

Well to this year Snapdragon and Exynos processers were head
to head when it come to real life perfomance. Note 3’s some variants had Snapdragon and others Exynos and the diffrence was not that noticable.

Qualcomm is a company that is heavily focused on mobile. If Samsung can produce a chip that performs the same or better compared with Snapdragon’s latest model there will be not much room left for Snapdragon. They are known for highest perfomance processors. And Mediatek known for price/performance.

I was so unhappy when SP 810 overheating comfirmed and htc
had to downclock that chip. S6 has better game and multi core performance and gaming fps compared to htc one M9 even S6 has
much pixels to handle. (Actually I don’t like the both processors since they both have stability problem and inconsistent battery consumption.) I tell you that much: If they used Snapdragon 805 for Z4 that announced in Japan, and it had a price tag between htc one m9 and Z3 I was considering to buy one. But now I’m not since both SP 810 and the fact that it’s expensive due to Snapdragon 810.

By the way LG is the brand which works closest with
Snapdragon compared to other phone manufacturers. Lg didn’t used 810 for It’s problems. Instead they optimised 808. So that means engineers in LG conncluded that optimised 808 is better compared to 810 even the 810 is quite better on the paper.

To sum up: SP 810 is not a bad processor. But It definietly have some deficiecies compared to others in the market. And I hope they will make a good comeback with 815 or 820 or SP XXX.

  • Tweety

Because it is out of the upgrade cycle which lasts some 18 months since the introduction of a phone model in the market. Xperia SP would probably work great with KitKat but we will never see it on Xperia SP let alone Lollipop. I own one Xperia SP phone.

  • kalsonmandela

????it’s Easy Make With xperiablog < i started working online, completing some basic jobs that only requires from you a computer and internet access and I am happier than ever… It's been 6 months since i started this and i got paid so far total of 36,000 bucks… Basicly i profit close to 80 bucks/h and work for 3-4 hrs most of the days.Best part to whole this thing is that you can decide when to work yourself and for how long and you get a paycheck
at the end of each week.

Consider yourself lucky, my Ultra was super-smooth when it ran kitkat, not so much with Lollipop, there is nothing new except for some art(not of any real use -just a bit of icandy).

  • Sun Sand

I would love to replace my current 6.44″ with a 6.2″ that would be the perfect size!!!

update fucked up my phone, unusable now

  • Some of you are talking rubbish, the Z Ultra is still one of best devices out there. it’s just that people didn’t understand its purpose in the market, it’s an all rounder, due to its size it’s great for gaming, work, watching movies, Web browsing etc, can’t fault it. It’s not Sony’s fault it hasn’t worked out, it’s just that people have been blinded by useless devices made by Samsung and Apple and so it hasn’t taken off as they would have liked. For all us users it is the best device and stands head and shoulders above the iPhone 6 plus and the note 4.

  • Cz Bg

I didnt get first update yet , when i will get any update ? I cant wait … i hope there is no bugs on this new lollipop. Did someone get new update ?

  • skyxz

SD 810 is not stable. It heats up, therefore LG used SD808 and modified it to their needs. LG revised it high end device with a 808 processor, HTC did the same with m9+ with a mediatek helio processor. I hope sony realizes it before launching their next international flagship.

  • jag

I use those often. The calculator, the timer, Unit conversion, forex, and even the mirror!!!! I even made my own mini apps like the walkman and hoverchat sms. So it is a very useful feature for me

  • Andrea

My Z1 have poor perfomance after update to Lollipop.. yours too?

  • sruthy

After upgrading to Lollipop my Xperica C3 become slow and front camera is not working properly :( any solution??

  • Jaissal S

I use the small apps calculator for quick use. also the mirror app lol.

  • Jaissal S

The Recent Apps still has the same functionality that it had on Kitkat right? So leaving alot of apps there would affect the performance of the phone. So it’s best to swipe apps away after using them.

  • Jaissal S

I’ve not had any big issues since updating. I’m just glad that the camera app doesn’t have that “not available” bug from Kitkat anymore. There is slight lag, but that is expected after upgrading.

  • I hoped that the Lollipop will bring better performance in the dark…but…in fact if I compare a photo made with S4 mini (8 MP camera) with Z1 camera…there a big difference…Z1 not ruling at all.

  • John P

Does anybody know how to switch back to swipe lockscreen? I have a pin lock screen and I can’t change it back to swipe.. It’s grayed out in the options.

  • Ditu Vlad

Settings > security and delete trusted credentials + deactivate google from trust agents. :)

  • Khillo81

Hmmmm. Maybe first try a factory reset and fresh Installation. I have the Z1 and things are smooth (albeit not perfect) and my colleague has a Z1C and he’s satisfied with Lollipop. Admittedly, going back to KitKat is not such a bad thing since I liked the look and feel of it, but I would miss the lockscreen notifications and the trusted places smart lock. And for the little bugs, maybe the newly certified update will solve them and if not maybe Lollipop 5.1…

Anyone hear any more info on the *270 build for Z1? The lack of tether function AND an inability to go back to Droid 4.4.4 is freaking killing me. I live in the country and don’t have access to free wifi hotspots around every damn coffeeshop corner :(

  • Patrick Edmundson

Ammad, is that response from Sony in reference to the newest build, *270? Or just the Lollipop upgrade in general? Because I have the Lollipop update already for my Z1, now I’m looking for an update to the update so tethering can work again. Anyone who depends on tethering SHOULD NOT take the *242 build of Lollipop or you’ll be screwed like me.

  • Kristo

It’s the update for the Xperia Z (First gen), the only flagship in the Z series that hasn’t gotten the update yet. It’s apparently being released today :D

  • Patrick Edmundson

OK, good luck with that…I hope you don’t use the tether function.

  • Andre Lemard

That’s definitely weird. I haven’t had any issues with tethering since updating my Z1… Have you tried factory resetting the device or repairing it through PC Companion or Sony Bridge?

me either, i am also not facing any tethering problem with z1, do what andre has told you.

  • Kevin Pachää Khouyà

Me too ;) Lazar is wrong

  • Patrick Edmundson

Ya it was weird for sure Andre…my update via PCCompanion went off without a hitch but tethering didn’t work. Yesterday I rec’d instructs from Sony on how to get my PCCompanion to re-issue the Lollipop update to my phone – this morning I was greeted with an error screen so I expected the worst. After a bizarre restart sequence on my phone, I now have a properly working version of build 242…but I lost all my apps. I didn’t lose my apps during the first update.

  • Andre Lemard

It probably used the repair function. It factory resets your phone and reinstalls android in the process. I was surprised when my phone was erased, I didn’t realise it would do that. Well it was worth the loss because my Z1 is now bug free.
