Xperia Z4 CameraIf you’re keen to view some sample pictures from the Japanese Sony Xperia Z4 (SO-03G), then have a gander below. The pictures cover a variety of conditions, although we don’t get to see any low-light ones. As hardware is unchanged from the Xperia Z3, you shouldn’t expect too much difference in terms of results. Have a look at the pictures (you can click each picture to see the full resolution) and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

It would be better if they compare it with Z3.

  • Akand

I don’t demand more than these from a Smartphone camera. As well as I don’t care whether other Smartphones can take better pictures than these or can’t. These are of my satisfactory levels.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Hopefully the new software can deal with flare. That’s a huge issue that has never been addressed in their entire Z line. Also hoping Sony can finally get OIS on board.

Doesn’t say what mode the samples are taken in, but the look pretty good so far

  • Niels d. G.

That is actually quite nice, the small details don’t look so rough around the edges anymore. I wonder if it’s because of better drivers? And then I’d hope they’re push out the same drivers to z2 and z3 series at least!

  • ramuk

Artifacts, Texture and Color these are the three departments Sony camera needs to improve. I’m so glad to see that they have improved their color so much. Next stuff is to dramatically improve artifacts and texture. I’m optimistic about the upcoming Z5, with new lens and software they should be able to improve these sector more.

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Magnificent shots, contrast and color accuracy superb…

  • Gadget Lover

    ^^ This.

  • el_sur

Wow these look great actually. There is still some overexposure coming through, but overall dramatically Improved results. I’m genuinely surprised by the quality

  • Niels d. G.

I don’t see much artifacts in these shots, if any. Looks very clean to me, very close to the Lumia flagships.

  • malinalaza

Now, what i see in Firefox are 8 megapixel images (3840X2160). Are they scaled down so they look better, or it’s cause of Firefox?

  • Sadman Khan

Whooaaa! Were these taken on Superior Auto? :o

  • lolop

    Low light shots now please.

  • RbbrDcky

I believe it’s safe to say that these were taken in Superior Auto mode which are oversampled 8MP photos.

Two thumbs up on these pics!

  • Shady

    Looks promising :D

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I think so. When I looking at the white balance mode it also at auto. The resolution is also at 8mp so it’s possible to be superior auto.

  • Kiwison

As Xperiablog shared before, Herman takes great photos with Z1 and even with SuperiorAuto, I know it depends on the people who take it, but I’m also aware that other manufacturers’ auto modes are better than Sony https://www.flickr.com/photos/77537273@N03

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

    Pls port z3+ camera apps to z2 n z3

  • Abdul Ghani

look at indoor cat picture the superior auto is still shit in low light and indoor light conditions

  • Abdul Ghani

they don’t look that awesome like u are describing

  • Prateek Bhanushali

The greatest improvement here is the white balance, Previous Z’s showed blue midtones all over the image and gave a vry Coldish and washed-out looks !!!

  • gamer324

Ok I’ll say it, I’m damn impressed!

  • Timel

You don’t care but Sony need to care, Sorry but Sony really need to make the best smartphone camera. Sony must compete with Apple, Samsung and LG which are seriously focus with their smartphone cameras.

  • Timel

These pics are not special at all, I used to see more awesome pics than these from Nokia 808, Nokia 1020 and Samsung S6 edge.

Whatever I’m glad to see this improvement from the new Sony flagship smartphone, good job but exactly not the best, I believe Sony can do much better than this.

  • Vuyo Ncube

Decent improvement (or at least the pictures look very appealing). Hopefully, the Z5 comes with a little better dynamic range (I’ll instantly buy it if it has a curved sensor AND in plane phase detection autofocus :P).

  • Tan Keeyong

Yeah for those that have been complaining z3 plus no improvement before the sample even coming out can slap their own face now. Seriously no improvement on. Camera hardware doesn’t means no improvement on the software. They just too blind to see. Be fair to sony.

  • Akand

I don’t know what is right. You should appoint a eye specialist or should I…….
Or you don’t know what “shit” actually means. Whoever says cat picture is shit quality, I doubt he has problem in his eyes or doesn’t know the weight of the word “SHIT”.

  • Akand

Of course they must improve image processing section more. But as a younger smartphone manufacturer they’re not that bad that people are saying. Problem is they’re using a mobile version of digital camera lens and sensor. But others are using which is made only for mobile devices. That’s why other sensors are working easily better than heavy weight mini version of digital camera sensor. As Sony said they need some more time to research to improve their smartphone camera unit. They’re also proving it that they’re doing research and trying to improve camera unit. Just compare Z1, Z2, Z3 and Z4. All camera hardwares are same but picture qualities are improving gradually. I think if people allow Sony some more time, Sony is gonna beat all others in near future, even with the same sensor.
But I think Sony is hesitating about their Mobile division. If they stay, within next two years at least on the camera sector Sony will beat your favourite Apple, Samsung and LG. Time is very close, my friend. I am standing beside Sony.

  • Akand

You’re right. Most problem is people are not fair enough while judging Sony.

  • Tan Keeyong

Ya sony always get bash. Sad

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

For a company known worldwide for its excellent cameras and camera sensors Sony is really dragging their feet when it comes to their smartphone cameras. Hopefully the Z5 will change all of that

  • Danny

if the Z4/Z3+ uses the same hardware as the Z3/C, Z2 and Z1/C, could we see similar software upgrades to the camera in future updates?

  • Alvin Zahran Majid

    finally… a great camera.

i’m more excited too see that freakin cute cat though hahaha

  • Alvin Zahran Majid

but how do you know that these aren’t special, timel? you don’t see these pictures in real life on how it really looks with our eyes, but Nokia 808, 1020, and S6 edge theirselves didn’t captures these pictures at the same time when the person who captures photographs in this news with those phones, so how do you know if those phones capture those pictures even better?

me, too still believes that sony really can and should do better though, but I really liked those pictures taken by Z4 tbh.

  • Timel

    They deserve

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Yes there is improvement overall, but still as they are using SuperSampling method, they can seriously get more out of the sensor !!!! Also these Samples are not reliable because they are Shot on 16:9 ratio, where as the sensor is 4:3, there is the option to select the ratio !!!

  • Prateek Bhanushali

I think the second image has been shot with 4:3 setting enabled and difference can bee seen there !!!

  • kido

Nothing extraordinary that the current z3 or z3c cant do….

  • Tangent Lin

Color quality of image improve, but there are noticeable amount of noise can be seen in the cat image. For me still not huge different compare with Z3. My solution for this is always shot with night scene, because this is the only scene that the z3 increase exposure to capture more light and also reduce to the lowest iso value in image.

  • Tan Keeyong

    Thanks

  • Steve

I don’t get it why so much negativity against sony from all around…see my Z1 pictures taken years ago….. and I’m not pro photographer….

  • Steve

I don’t get it why so much negativity against sony from all around…see my Z1 pictures taken years ago….. and I’m not pro photographer….

  • Samuel

No. It is called Planned obsolescence; companies expect you to buy a new phone every 18 months.

  • Nabeel Raza

It’s not about matching to the quality of DSLR. It’s about atleast performing better than or equal to the Iphone 6 plus, Samsung S6 and LG G4. Which isn’t the case. Funny thing is I6 and S6 use sony sensor.

You gotta see the photos the above mentioned phones take in order to understand. I will not post any of the photos from the web because you just won’t admit that they are better from Z3. if you have any friend with samsung s6, you should see it yourself.

The photos from Z3+ are just OK . :(

  • Meysam Khanbabaie

    Very Nice

  • ZeRo+

Excuse me for asking, but what is special on your samples …? For example, do you think that photo has good detail ..) http://image.itmedia.co.jp/mobile/articles/1506/02/l_st_z4camera-29_EX.jpg

  • Timel

This pic proved 2 things 1) you’re not a pro photographer and 2) Z1 has a shitty camera.

  • roeshak

To be honest I see absolutely no difference to what we’ve got now on z2. Same type of quality

  • Geese Howard

Nah, not everyone is saying bad things about Sony only shitty fanboys from low companies such as Samskunk and Sour Apple are being farts that’s all. Nice photo man!

  • ramuk

Yes, for a front facing camera in a low light shoot it has pretty good detail. You deliberately choose the worst of the bunch to prove that details still sucks but in reality its a much better improvement over Z3. Sony has still lots to do with their camera like I said in my previous comment ( like improving artifacts, texture and color ) but from the sample photo it pretty clear that Z3+ has much better auto mode than their previous Z series flagship phones. And if you can’t see the improvement I have nothing to say to you.

  • Kent Gaga

tbh, your picture clearly shows how bad the Z1 camera perform
you can see the pinkish tint to the photo and the details aren’t as sharp as the 20mp sensor would suggest, at least on paper

  • foxy

again and again, the sample picture always looks terrific, then the quality of picture become a shit when we actually use it

  • Timel

    Yup!

  • jakobd.

Again a fucking bad Camera for the next Sony Smartphone :-((((((

  • Azhy Najmadin

Actually they have updated the camera of z1 when z2 came out so I think they will update z3 but not z2 or z1 because they have different sensors and lenses

  • Abdul Ghani

ur trying to be funny but u aint can u see details of the cat because to me the cat looks like painting u sound like a fanboy cannot see the truth that sonys superior auto is still shit in low light and indoor light conditions

  • Azhy Najmadin

It looks same as my z3 with just different colors , when you zoom it it doesnt show detail but some cartoony and rough plane with huge noises

  • Oh!

It looks the same when compare to my Z2.
There is more details in my original file. It seems compress when uploaded here.

  • ????

why does gsmarena keep getting z units that take photos with blurry corners?

  • ????

    but i really like flares

  • ????

these are so different from gsmarena’s sample photos. no blurs and distortions. the photos look sharp and aren’t as noisy as those from gsmarena’s.

  • Faisal Armand

Flare is lens related, not software

  • Timel

    I hope So

  • Benable Benburgers

i have been using xperia form xperia x10 and never have problems until i bought z3. it ruined everything. The camera is slow and not smooth. my z3 went to repair center after 1 month because of camera temperature sensor broke down, so they have to change main board. i am changing from sony to iphone soon

  • Niels d. G.

I know it’s still not on par with Samsung Galaxy s5/6 or recent iPhones, but it’s at least a huge improvement over any previous Xperia Zx. And the chances are high that the camera drivers for the final retail version will be a bit better still. At least now the image quality is very acceptable. They’ll get on par with Samsung and iPhone eventually, they’re on the right track now.

    Hi there :)

Here is my analysis about Z4 image quality as compared to previous Xperias such as Z3 & Z2. (in superior auto mode)

    What’s improved:
    – Better dynamic range with less overexposure which was a bit of an issue with previous xperias
    – Better white balance than Xperia Z3, but not sure against Z2. Becausd Z3 takes colder photos all the time when compared to Z2
    – Less sharpening artifacts but not quite by much as 8MP mode of Z2 & Z3 was enough to hide those artifacts
    – Less noise (at the cost of details)

    What’s worse:
    – Noticeably stronger noise reduction which caused worse retention of fine details. Now the photos has more pronounced painting effect, especially when I zoom in to the areas of very fine details such as bread and trees.

Now it all depends on the preference. Me personally, would take noisier but detailed photos rather than clean but blurry ones.

IMHO, judging from the cat picture, superior auto doesn’t seem to be improved. EXIF data recorded the ISO at 800 and the shutter speed at 1/32s. A good auto mode is about balancing ISO & shutter speed and Sony still decide bump ISO too high and using fast shutter speed to avoid blur. That cat picture will be more balanced with ISO 500 & 1/18s.

  • jakobd.

the Camera is to slow ,AF too to slow,Depth of field to blur,Depth of field to blur.Software smeared too much the images looks too artificial from, still much noise even in good light, the lowlight very bad, please ask Sony improves it out !!!

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Actually the bunch of you are talking crap…
This are superb results for superior auto 8 mpx
Shoot photos with s6 and lg g4 in 8 mpx and see the difference in quality
Cant wait to see manual 20.7 mpx capabilities

  • Sander

I would absolutely say that a good photographer with a shitty camera can take much better photos than a shitty photographer with a great camera!

  • Vjekoslav Andric

You mean Generaly Samsung Marketing Arena? They tamper with representative S6 photos, update and improve them when needed. But only samsung phones have that treatment there….Bunch of biased ass…oles

  • Steve

That’s actually not full resulation pic,it’s auto and I could not post it in full size as pic came bit bigger in size then this comment section allows…. And I can’t see any pinkish tint tbh….

  • Steve

Actually I used i6 i5 s3 s4 s5 and saw s6 both and what I found is all S phone takes pic with low iso and over saturated colour almost artificial and I phones take fast pic as S but not so sharp…. Sony phones bit slow to take due to two stage dedicated camera sutter button… for nothing else… and tru to reality….

  • Abdul Ghani

but why sonymobile is giving shitty camera to shitty photographers

  • Steve

  • ZeRo+

Do you want say that Z3+ has good camera..? Okay i will show you samples taken buy this. First look at the pussycat, and psl zoom )http://www.static.xperiablog.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Xperia-Z4-Sample_14.jpg Where is DITAILS..?

And, what about dynamic range. Sky again are overexposed, and strange colors on grass.. http://www.static.xperiablog.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Xperia-Z4-Sample_13.jpg

  • el_sur

Did you translate the japanese website? It is clearly stated that this was a lowlight situation,so the the software had to compensate. This isn’t an ideal situation. Pretty good in my opinion for a lowlight photo.

  • Timel

You should know one thing “don’t expect anything with Xperia fanboys here”

They’re always blind and bias, they love to say “Sony is the best” even sometimes Sony is the worst LOL

  • Nodar Sixarulidze
  • marcyff2

@disqus_nDjWL785Mo:disqus man you 2 are wierd IT’S a website solely about SONY Mobile division. Who did you expect to find here? Steve Jobs? Seriously is retarded that you would think you would find someone else apart from sony fans/users

  • marcyff2

Everywhere i read it says Z3 and Z2 have the exact same sensor….. so i don’t see a reason z2 wouldn’t get the improvement

  • Timel

To be honest but believe me or not, if I tell you that I’m a huge fan of Sony.

  • Boonerski

Looks promising, but one thing’s for sure though: it’s gonna have a hard time competing with likes of the G4 and the S6.

  • Azhy Najmadin

Z2 sensor only supports until iso6400 but the z3 supports until 12800 is that same sensor?

  • MMElliot

I want see 20MP samples, not stupid 8MP downsamples..

  • Adhi Suryana

    Z2 has iso 6400 aperture f/2.0
    Z3 has iso 12800 aperture f/2.2
    Z4 has iso 12800 aperture f/2.0
    as far as I know

  • ????

where are the blurring corners? i need those blurry corners! gsmarena said they should have random blurring across the photo. there should also be a lot of noise! why am i not seeing those here?

  • Timel

This pic also, it proved 2 things like the previous pic 1) you’re clearly not a pro photographer and 2) Z1 has had a shitty camera.

In reality many end users ain’t the pro photographers, many people don’t have good photography skills you may be one of them too but so what? The point is your phone, If your phone is a great smartphone camera(like Nokia 808 / Lumia 1020, Samsung Note 4 / S6 edge, iPhone 5s / 6 and LG G4) you will easily be able to take great quality photos without being a pro photographer.

Good technology must make our life easier and more comfortable, right?

  • ZeRo+

To make a really great camera, Sony will need to make a revolution, but Sony mobile not capable for this.
You ask me why? I tell you why!
Because for this, they will have to hire a new and good programmers, and it’s money! Used the new expensive optics, and it is also money! Sony must make a new revolution technology, that will be a serious response, for Pureview technology, but they do not, I don`t know why suspended Projects with a curved sensor, apparently it did not so good …
So we again will not see changes with Z5 release !

  • ZeRo+

Because they a pity to spend money on good programmers. But they do not realize that today people are paying big bucks for a flagship smartphone, only because they want have the nice camera to. This is only a Sony 4 years, did not understand this. Today, people don`t want to pay big money for shitty soft and bad lenses.
    Therefore we cry S O S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvChjHcABPA

  • Timel

    THIS!

    You’re absolutely right!

  • ZeRo+

Kaz only many talks, a lot of promises, but in fact nothing has changed over 4 years. No innovations (waterproof it`s not innovation) only mistakes correction … Each new Z series – is simply mistakes correction of previous Z series, but not the new generation.

  • Abdul Ghani

haha nice one and its true sony ruined their software that is the main reason for the crappy pictures anyway i have been using qx10 and qx30 love them both

  • Abdul Ghani

HDR not working properly for outdoor , iso is high in indoor pictures because of crappy superior auto and the processing still have that painting effect the thing is what ive learned from z2 if i put iso 400 for indoor pictures its still noisy like hell the painting effect is sony exclusive feature thats why i switched to qx30 that thing is a beast

  • Abdul Ghani

u dont need to be hard on sony i agree with @disqus_nDjWL785Mo:disqus that sony fired the best team and kept those sweden losers for software though their lollipop update is good nothing has changed in camera software the painting effect exclusive from sony is still there only thing i like in their phone is the hardware and lollipop smooth update and battery life for camera i use qx30

  • Abdul Ghani

agreed sony fired real people back in days when they removed ericsson and kept those ass sweden holes dont know why they had to ruin camera software still sony doesn’t learn that they failed in every camera challenge from different brands that software from z the exclusive painting effect continued to z3+

  • Abdul Ghani

    lgg4 uses sonys sensor too

  • Pingback: Así captura las fotografías el Sony Xperia Z4 - Smart.cl - Smart Systems Ltda.()

  • Timel

    Shame on you Sony!

  • ZoubIWah

still seem to overexpose (specially in blue-bright-ski situations) which is my main issue with the z3, have to bump expo down but that’s still not great.
Seems to be a lens issue to be honest..

  • Oh!

No problem with my Xperia Z2 camera. Definitely will not have any problem with Xperia Z3+ camera when I get it.

The Z3+ is by no means the best mobile phone camera. However, it is still pretty good.

  • Kent Gaga

and that’s why you think your picture is great
well it’s not, especially when compared to other flagships, even the old ones

  • Steve

I resized it before posting as it’s well over 2mb…. and the pic taken during winter :-)

  • Kent Gaga

yeah and even in smaller size i can see the details look aweful
anyways, explaining to me doesnt change how i think about it because i have used the Z,Z1,Z2, Z3 and most other xperias and I know how their cameras perform
for right now i’m using the Galaxy S6 edge (and an E4) and no offense, but it’s just a pain in the eye to look at your photos that you claimed to be good in quality

  • ZeRo+

I found Z3+ camera test from GSMArena, result still are bad. Again noise, again blurring details.. on photo samples edges are highly diffuse. Nothing changed …

  • Simon Setyadarma

Well, at least it isn’t a cold picture anymore, it is more better than the last, so dull and cold.
But I do agree about the overexposed sky, looks not so good but not that bad at all…
I think Sony realize how important to fix superior auto is, so I guess they will bring a new update to really make it better so it can compete with other brand, so proud of G4 camera, finally LG came up with a good phone.
C’mon Sony, read what your consumer complain about!

  • ZeRo+

Yes, there is an improvement in color reproduction, but also much that needs fixing and working on it, and process of creating an really great camera, this is the hardest thing in the smartphone today, the camera is the main aspect on which people choosing a smartphone. I always wondered what how iPhone with a small sensor always showed good dynamic range..?
Today Lg G4 and SGS6 cameras , considered the best cameras on the android. Of course, this is not the great Nokia 808 pureview level , but they trying. Look at G4 camera sample, it`s great http://cdn02.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/lg-g4-1.jpg
Even full size 100% crops looks good, soft details http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/1237588230313448848.jpg
And this 20 mp Sony Z3 camera`s crops, always we see pixels http://f-picture.net/lfp/s020.radikal.ru/i722/1506/30/9f289567f51a.png/htm
Previously, when was Sony Ericsson, people knowed that they are buying smart phones because of the excellent camera, and now the same people do not want buy Sony, because there is not a good camera, big problems with the software. All Sony fans, we believed, that Sony will make the great camera phone to be a worthy opponent for the Nokia 808 pureview, but in real live Sony 20 mp. camera can`t beat even 8 mp. iPhone camera..!. It’s very sad for all of us, not surprising that, Sony all the increasingly losing its position in the market ..

  • Simon Setyadarma

Sony has the material, they need to work on it…
When they know how to tweak it, it would be beast:)

  • MrHaugen

I almost fell in love with this phone. Great hardware, dual sim version as well as good camera and manual controls. But no RAW support. What a darn shame!

I know there’s not a whole lot of users who needs this today, but for photographers this would pretty much be a must have phone IF it was added. I know photographers have their bigger cameras. And so do I. But sometimes you find your self without a camera and a great setting for some serious shooting. And that’s when a raw output would be great. You can transform a bad picture into something rather good when it’s in raw. With jpg’s you can pretty much just toss it out!

Please consider adding this with a new update, and I will purchase this model right away.

  • Andy Roid

Ugh. Horrible noise/watercolor effect on the fine details in the zoomed in shots

  • Andy Roid

That’s an awful pic. There’s no detail in the trees. You can’t see any leaves, just a mass of mushy green

The main camera of Z3 + is probably just as bad as the Z3, worse autofocus, too much noise, poor focus, bad low light, I am disappointed :-((
