Sony Xperia Android MSony Mobile has announced the Android M Developer Preview for twelve Sony Xperia devices. Sony is allowing developers to flash a test image of Android M Developer Preview onto any device in Sony’s Open Device program. This includes the following devices: Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z1, Z1 Compact, Z Ultra, E3, M2, T2 Ultra and T3.

The developer preview gives devs the necessary tools to test and verify apps on the new Android M release, which includes a new permission system. If you want to get started and download the software binaries then hit the source link below. You can only run it on devices where the bootloader is unlocked and the software is not for daily use (the modem and camera aren’t implemented).

Thanks Michael and Stamppot!

On Z Ultra unstable as hell but still great to see this bold move from SONY. Not every manufacturer do this for their devices. Oh and btw, is this confirmation that SONY Android M will be released for Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z1, Z1 Compact, Z Ultra, E3, M2, T2 Ultra and T3? I hope so.

  • Azhy Najmadin

Well done sony , but please change the notification for the next official update its just as the googles one and its very ugly and looks cheap

  • WilliamTell13

It’s definitely not confirmation, but I’d say it’s likely for the Z series at least.

  • Gitarooman

sony should really look at their own What’s new interface/UI when designing their new UI, probably expensive though due to so many transparencies.

  • Lukáš Pávl

Totally agree with you. They should connect all designing teams together and bring UI same as is What’s new app. But i doubt they would ever do something like that.

  • DanielGearSolid

    What’s new ui is beautiful

  • Niels d. G.

    So Android M is 5.1.5? That’s odd.

  • Luigi De Francesco

Is probably a demo number version…the api will be lower than the future commercial android m (like android l was api 20 and android lollipop is 5.0 api 21)

  • (C):stem

A developer preview already, sounds great. Hopefully Android M will be rolling in our Xperias 2 months after the official release for the Nexus devices.

  • WilliamTell13

I’m thinking it’s probably going to be 5.2.

  • Great Dude

It is too early to confirm that especially that the final Android M is not released not even for Nexus devices.

  • Timel

Hope Sony will listen to your awesome idea

The current Xperia UI is very fugly, cheap, kiddish and mess, it doesn’t deserve with the classy design of Xperia flagship devices at all.

  • hmmm

it gets uglier with every update! kitkat was so good will end up with this junk…close all apps button, not even on android M,so how many years do I have to wait to get what was normal to get from the beginning???how can you make something bad, from something that was good?still have problems with messages, can’t write right after I get the message from people,I have to hit the massage box,for that line to appear…can’t write messages when using ultra stamina mode…no raw support.I got Z3 and planing to buy Z3+,but sony just ruins this phone with every were looking so good sony, but that was in the past!!!!!!!

  • Matt

This is as close as I get to xperia nexus. Like the materialised UI :)

Nexus up means they can concentrate more on stability and not that much on cosmetic. I’m all for that

  • Jecht_Sin

Not a confirmation but why Sony would waste its own and developers time implementing and having it tested in those devices? I’m confident Sony will release the final version in all of them.

  • Mathias Cronqvist

  • Jecht_Sin

Great news! It seem Sony understood which is the best way to compete in the Android world: keep updating most phones, building a reputation of not abandoning them.

  • Ulysses Grant

No UI is as ugly as Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.

  • charbel aoun

    on my nexus 5 it’s 5.1.99

  • ShinOrochiX

    Hahaha, +1 to that.

  • Sadman Khan

It’s a developer preview AOSP. Which means this isn’t the xperia version of M. But rather the “stock” version

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi
  • plaisthos

Releasing an experimental barely tested build for a device and supporting a tested/veriified build for a device a basically two different pairs of shoes.

And keep in mind that the whole ZU, Z1, Z2, Z3 series can run the same kernel, so it is no extra effort for these builds.

  • adibuyono

So.. its mean android M wont arrive for oldest Z series..
quite understanding.. but still hope android M arrives on oldest Z series to show sony great update service than others companies

  • Svnjay

I think that’s what he means.

  • Timel

    Y r u so obsessed with Samsung?

  • Razuberyl

I’m okay with my Xperia Z already getting Android L 5.1, but M, my heart can’t take it… so much joy

  • Eduardo Otero

Obviously S6 Edge will be faster than Z3+ with all those cuts and that incredible quick hand that manages that S6 Edge and that soooo slow hand that manages Z3+
I don’t have any doubt that with its undercloked SD810 Z3+ will be slower but please use a video without a big edition

  • rus_media

    “Soon” after Nexus devices.

  • Rajat yadav

This means that Android m will come for t2 ultra.. ?? Plszz someone tell me

  • Rajat yadav

Is this confirm that this. All devices gets android m..??

  • Rajat yadav

So it means that Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z1, Z1 Compact, Z Ultra, E3, M2, T2 Ultra and T3 all this device is conferm to Android m or its only checking process??

  • Emil Oskarsson

Xperia ui is so close to stock Android, that’s why it’s the best in my opinion and best looking for that matter

  • Timel

Is it so hard for you to admit the truth?

In many speed test videos and benchmarks show that Samsung S6 edge is faster than Sony Z3/Z3+

The fact that Sony suck sometimes, Sony is not the best, Sony is worse than Samsung sometimes

  • Eduardo Otero

Did you read my my comment complete??
I told you I don’t have any doubt that with its undercloked SD810 Z3+ will be slower, I know Z3+ will totally fail, but have to admit that there is a bloody lot of cuts in your video trying to make look slower than Z3+ really is. There will be surely more videos without edition showing how slow is Z3+ against S6.

  • Timel

Sony makes Material design looks worse than it is.

  • Sadman Khan

I think he thinks that this will be the xperia version

  • Luigi De Francesco

It’s probably a earlier version the Sony one… The developer preview i think it update always

  • Mathias Cronqvist

Flag and ignore, man. For your own sanity, do not engage Timel except to insult him or his absent intellect.

  • Timel

Is it too hard for you to accept the truth?

  • Timel

Is it too hard for you to accept the truth?

  • Mathias Cronqvist

    I rest my case.

  • bartek010

Does that mean all these smartphones receive official Anroid M update?
