Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware (23.4.A.0.546) certified for Xperia Z2 and Z3 series

by XB on 16th July 2015

in Android, Firmware, Sony Tablet, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 series

Xperia Z2_23.4.A.0.546The wait for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware is nearly over for the Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3 series. The latest firmware update with build number 23.4.A.0.546 has just been certified by the PTCRB for these devices. The 23.4.X.X.XXX build template versus the current firmware starting with ‘23.1’ or ‘23.2’ is expected to denote this being Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Firmware build number 23.4.A.0.546 has so far been certified for the Xperia Z2 (D6502, D6503), Xperia Z2 Tablet (SGP521), Xperia Z3 (D6653), Xperia Z3 Dual (D6633), Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803, D5833) and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact (SGP621, SGP641). This means that the update could land any day now, but hopefully means we will definitely see it this month, as Sony had originally intended. We’ll let you know once the update starts to roll.

Update: The Xperia Z3 D6603 variant has also now seen the same firmware certified.

Xperia Z2_23.4.A.0.546

What about the z1s? But I’m just glad Sony is jumping to 5.1.1 and not just giving us 5.1

  • Alex Baloch

I still haven’t received lollipop on my Xperia Z yet!! :(((
Its unlocked C6603 model and im in Canada!
    Anyone know why? Thanks!

  • Alvin

    of course they always did.

even though they always late in updates but at least they always brought the latest ones

What about the update for the Z1?

  • xperiaDROID

    Let the whining begin!

  • xperiaDROID

If I’m not wrong, there are few more countries that still haven’t receive the Lollipop update for Z yet, maybe it’s due to the annoying bugs like battery drain and low volume sound etc so they might skip it and jump straight to 5.1.1.

Trust me, you won’t like the 5.0.2 update, you will enjoy it at first because it looks new and smooth, but you will get annoyed later that because of the bugs. Better wait for 5.1.1.

  • Eduardo Otero

Obviously not to have it xD
You’re right, I meant at last xD

  • I hope many improvements will come with this update.

  • PoweredBySony

My bad. I don’t see any new features and changes over lollipop in this preview.

  • Matt

at last? s6 just received their lollipop 5.1.1 about yesterday, and now the are probably preparing bug fix for the buggy update

im just happy that z3 will get the update soon

  • Alvin

    Me too

  • Eduardo Otero

It was sarcasm about how long Sony took to roll out and this time they seem to be on time according to what they told us.

  • Matt

hahah sorry mate my sarcasm radar is a bit rusty

  • dkionline

So 23.4.A.1.40 should be Vodafone or Tmob?

  • dkionline

    Sure, just wait.

  • SONY only

Please release lollipop for Xperia E1

  • Eduardo Otero

It’s OK anyway what really matters is that we’re getting Lollipop soon.

  • Eduardo Otero

The whole Z3 and Z2 series

  • Arch9

Anybody think this update will bring camera2 api (raw) support support?

  • Why do you need it

  • Shaktimaan

Hope this fixes the battery usage ( the mobile radio active bug) My z2 has been plagued with this issue since lollipop

  • Especially longer battery time.

  • that’s a real must. Yesterday I had to reset my phone due to camera crashes. I guess it is something related to the SD card…

  • hmmm

what a disaster…. white menu background???this update will just ruin every phone!!!thank you,but NO!

  • Arch9

Why I need it? I don’t really need it
but its nice to have, I mean shooting raw with this awesome 20MP camera? Come on

  • Arch9

Why the fuck I need dslr for only shooting raw image?

  • rubinaish

After resetting, I didn’t have any more bugs.

  • mukul verma

nothing changes, only bugs fixes by google, while sony may introduces full manual camera support except raw in z3 or probably in z2 & some minor changes in UI.

  • mukul verma

may be sony may give to z3 full manual controls, but raw may not.

  • xperiaDROID

Resetting sure smooth things out a bit, but the bugs are still there. So, Sony still sucks when it comes to their software, they can’t really expect us to reset our phones on every major update right?

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Please explain, cause my battery life went horrible after lollipop update.

  • jag

    No z3+??!!

  • theskig

I hope they fixed the problems.
If so I will upgrade, otherwise I’ll stay with my good-old KitKat

  • u fanboy?

Will get after z2,z3 gets it

  • PoweredBySony

Maybe they will fix it in the last build

  • shinjieva01

Seriously guys, what we expect from an update for our sony z3 (and not) is, improved camera software, in automode, for the full manual control, more stability, less overheating…that’s the basic for a standard software, i got a bit angry about these things, because even with a galaxy s3 in automode i take better photo then the sony’s one, come on we have 20mpx and the best sensor ever, open your eyes sony

  • Emil Oskarsson

root the device on kitkat with towel root, install NUTS dual recovery and install existenz ultimate Y for your xperia z (latest lollipop firmware for the device), doing it right now myself and i promise you, there wont be any bugs like battery drain etc. And best of all you dont have to unlock your BL you can stay with locked one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784900

I’ve noticed that all versions of Android 5.0.2 (not just sony’s) have this bug, where any app that relies on Internet, if used for a while or kept running in background, uses a lot of battery due to ‘mobile radio active’ (seen in the battery usage statistics of the app). even more that the screen sometimes lol.Check the images below…..

  • WilliamTell13

5.1.1 has hundreds, if not thousands of bug fixes. It was a pretty major jump from 5.0.2. The phones should hopefully be a good bit faster and smoother. And I’m hoping the constant launcher redraws on my Z1s stop.

  • Sadman Khan

Oh yes. Multitasking should be improved. Well let’s see what Sony has in store for us.

  • shinjieva01

Have you tried the automode? I went to a concert recently, and while i was taking picture there was a girl in front of me with a galaxy s3…so…well my z3 was more out of focus then the s3, i dunno why…. By the way to be honest, I’m able to take very good picture in manual mode, but the main topic is not the comparison between z3 and s3, the main topic is that sony have to improve its software because, now is a bit bad…

A journalist or creative industry professional could take advantage of raw compatibility by processing the images as they intend, so more complex results can be achieved with a capable, compact device that fits in your pocket. We can already get a great size for printing and high resolution displays, but being stuck on JPEG knowing that the processing tends towards smaller sizes than higher quality limits the full potential of a flagship smartphone camera. The future asks for all-in-one solutions reaching from amateurs to professionals.

  • Claudiu

No, it does not fix the mobile radio drain.
My old Nexus 4 is already on 5.1.1 for a few months now and this issue persists.
The big problem is that Google hasn’t even acknowledged it yet, so I’m afraid we are forced to get used to this until the next cr-I mean wonderful OS by Google, Android M.
Actually I don’t have to get used to anything because I downgraded to KitKat (flashtool : un-rooted, locked bootloader) to enjoy a very fast, stable Z3C and with fantastic battery life.

  • Alvin

    What?

  • raju

What Z3 + UI screen shot plz

  • Matt

how high of you speaking for the future and professionals.

    #Jpegs are okay .
#a professional would bring RX100 or a small great pocket with them. and will not rely on smartphone camera.

stop praising RAW as a magical format that makes your photo bigger or better. Raw makes your photo worse when you take them, and its YOU who needs to do all the processing. for that you need an expensive piece of software , so really it is not ideal. Would be great but not ideal (remembering the tiny sensor that smartphone camera use).

its like installing turbo on your office chair, it will take the full potential of the chair, and it will be faster than normal chair, but no one will use them.

  • subbu

  • Richard Martin

Good that they’re bothering to update old devices like the Z2.

  • Niels d. G.

No, Sony, do not want! I never even installed this app and there’s no way to hide or dismiss the notification in What’s New.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Yea I just don’t understand how they calculate this percentage though, it’s so inaccurate.
I hope they fixed it with 5.1.1

  • Fernando Nectoux

This is a matter of choices. The choice of using the 5D, the RX100 or even my Xperia Z3. Yes, a good JPEG is exactly like you’ve said: okay. But the grainy, flat, uncompressed information from the sensor can be great in the right hands – aesthetically further than if there was only the compressed file. So, at least, it isn’t reasonable to have the option, to be able to chose RAW or JPEG? If it doesn’t hurt your way of doing things now, whats the problem of having another for those who want? A choice, Matt.

  • Matt

A choice, correct! It would be great if Sony added RAW support. But then again it might not be that reasonable.

Because adding it will cost Sony money(big surprise there) and to take advantage of it user has to have another program which is not practical at all. Just like what you said, Only a handful of people can work on RAW.

So now place yourself on Sony’s place would you rather develop a raw feature and only a handful of people can use it or another AR effect that they can advertise?

Mind you we are on the same page here. I also wanted raw as a choice.

  • Sweggity

u r right about this and i got to notice this today… yep that’s a big bug

  • Brick

I have the S4 which is leaps and bounds better than the shitty S3 and the Z3 is far better in every single way, not only camera wise, by a large margin. Maybe your Z3 is defective, but then again I seriously doubt looking at a girl’s phone at a concert is a fair measurement of quality of the phone’s photos in auto mode.

Yes they do have to improve their software because sometimes it picks weird white balances that wash out the picture but there’s no way it’s worse than S3.

  • Kravtiger

Looks like it may be coming to the UK soon with all the apps that are being updated recently

  • HAWX

Head over to official forum / Other phones/ Xperia Z-ZL.

The bug which uses huge battery and processor.. A brand new, updated Xperia Z is rubish compared to even iPhone 4S. And Sony and Google gave 0 fucks so far.. I’m having extra shitty eXperiences with Z since 4.2.2.

Yes it occurs on practically every Android 5+ device, its the “Mobile Radio Active” bug only happens when you are outside WiFi coverage with data enabled.

Its number 4 in terms of votes on Google’s bug tracker and apparently this is happening in Android M preview also. Google for some reason marked this as “Small Priority”. Google really needs to get its —insert alternate word for fesces here– in order.

Google Bug Tracker link for the issue:

Every device on 5.0.X should be upgraded to a version that doesn’t crash apps or lag on redraw of homescreen and minor other annoyances that add up to a frustrating user experience. Why the fuck does it take so many steps to get to the screen you want? And I don’t like the extra split second it takes to transition from one screen to the next.

So… Where is it then? Z2 has received no update. It was meant to roll this week.

  • rubinaish

That’s right, it should have worked by itself, since not every user is as competent as the ones on this blog, to reset the phone and reinstall all the apps, copy all the data etc. And yeah, that process sucks.

  • Antony Curren

I had no issues with Lollipop, loved it to be honest. It did all i needed and cleared up the SD card nonsense, (such as being unable to delete from sd card…)
Sadly, since the upgrade to 5.1.1 i am having issues which are, as the Gallagher brothers would say, doing my ‘ead in.
I am unable to apply ringtones to contacts if the ringtones are on the external sd, I had to transfer all ringtones to the internal.. not a biggy, but annoying as i rely on the different ringtones to let me know whether it’s worth taking my phone out of my pocket.
Also, another bug, but not a biggy. the icon of ‘me’ on the text message conversations is no longer there, where my text out is. The other texter’s icon is fine, but I have been replaced by a white ghost?
I have not checked other things yet as I have been busy, (working these two out to start with).
Is anyone else miffed at the 5.1.1???
I want to be in full control of my phone again….
