New screenshots of Sony’s Concept for Android software

xperia-concept-app-drawerThe first few screenshots of Sony’s ‘Concept for Android’ Xperia software made an appearance last week, showcasing a stripped down UI – much closer to a stock Android experience. 500 Xperia Z3 owners in Sweden are being selected to trial this new software and it was always likely that it wouldn’t be too long before more screenshots leaked, which is precisely what’s happened.

The Concept for Android software is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and bundled apps are kept to a minimum, although we still noticed that Sony’s Album, Music, What’s New and Xperia Lounge apps were present – along with Sony’s camera app. New updates to the software will appear for the beta testers periodically via OTA, which may change functionality. Do you like what you see below? So far, Sony has always talked about this being a concept only, but we may see this Nexus-like experience hit Xperia devices at some point in the future.

    where is the difference?

  • Kristo

There are a few design changes, but honestly, I expected more.

  • ????? ????????

It’s a very interesting idea, but I will stick with the Xperia UI. I like it.

  • Srijan Chawla

I’ll be brutally honest, i don’t like it so far, the only thing that kept me from owning a Nexus was because i hated the stock UI, i love what sony has done with the Xperia range, but this, I’m not sure.
I hate the dock & the icon names placed there, its so Samsung like, i hate it
I’m sorry but this is my honest opinion :(

  • Sadman Khan

I hate this. If I needed a nexus, I’d go get one or I’d flash AOSP on my Xperia. They can just make this a different rom and provide an ftf for it

  • Azreff Haeqal

Come on Sony Xperia. Where’s your originality and your uniqueness. We need that.

  • jrnr

Xperia UI is better, neat and polished
But hope they make it light for a better performance

  • KzX

    Not much different :-/? .

  • DBS

If I wanted stock Android, I’d buy a Nexus or a Motorola.

THIS isn’t a “Concept” at all. It’s just stock crap. There’s no need to “test” this. It’s been tested before. By Google.
So, unless behind this there’s a deeply POWERFUL customization engine, I rather see this project die than going forward.

  • dragonsneeze

At this point I gotta ask what concept? Where’s the concept? Since when stock Android bacame a concept? I don’t see anything new.

  • ndedecker

I like a lot of this. The notification bar icons, the soft keys, etc. What annoys me a lot (even though it’s a big part of their offering) is Sony’s media apps. The only one I like is the Music app. It’s the best one I’ve used of any player on Android. It’s very complete and it looks and works great. Otherwise, the Album and Video apps could be scrapped and I wouldn’t mind one bit. Google’s new Photos app is everything that Album should be and I hate that I can’t fully integrate it with the system. Plus I think I could count the number of times I’ve opened the Videos app on one hand. I never use it because it’s redundant. I love Sony’s phones and software, but if I stick with Android I’ll probably go stock for my next phone, at least as long as they offer a decent internal storage capacity option. Everything works better on stock while my Z3 struggles to do even basic things sometimes. Most likely, though, I can see myself going for an iPhone for my next phone. Apple has implemented the same features as most Android phones now and all of their stuff looks great and works great. I mean I can’t even use my camera for a couple minutes without the phone getting really hot and then not even getting great results. Internals, camera megapixels, etc. don’t mean much because somehow Apple manages to get better results with less. Who knows though, maybe my mind will be changed by the time I upgrade next. Just have to wait and see.

    Please change navigation bar

  • Sadab Khan

    Chup koro beadob kothakar

  • I hope not, the stock sony is horrible .

  • Shehab Skull

Sony.. Are you fuckin kidding me? -_-

  • It looks exactly like the stock lollipop Material Design UI I don’t see what is different about it other than a clock widget.

  • spwx

whenever i turn on my Moto G or S2 that I have running latest non-factory images, i get reminded how much stock android is missing. I have no idea why your Z3 struggles, my works perfectly, very happy. As to the Apple, they have huge problems of their own.

  • Abhinav Tella

Google’s stock icons are ugly. I mean I like going towards stock, however for all the software talent at Google the one thing they lack is aesthetics. They should also do a better job at hiring artists/designers. They fail to realize looks are as important to regular users as sheer specs, one of Apple’s main reason for getting to its current position was aesthetics.

  • David Hvatov

    Totally agree with you.

  • Lukáš Pávl

Exactly! You are completely right. This right here is not concept UI, that is just stock android with Sony apps. It’s rubbish and SONY should be ashamed for what they are doing with this whole “concept” thing. If this is going to be ever released as official UI I’m going to switch to different brand. Last nail to their coffin.

  • Judging from the comments, people would like a customized UI more than faster updates. Oh well.

  • Kaloyan Stoychev

Google arguably have better design than most other tech companies these days. Just because you dislike them doesn’t mean other people will as well.

  • Lukáš Pávl

There is no connection between customized UI and faster updates -_-

  • Srijan Chawla

Yes, Sony has been making some shitty decisions lately, it is time to step up your game or leave, i have no clue what will i ever do without Sony in the mobile industry but if this is what the next big thing is headed too then I’m sorry i will not be a part of it.

  • Pavlos Hadj

Apple iphones have problems too. Dont be fooled by their marketing methods. I had the 5s some time ago and was very dissapointed. Bugs, bad signal reception, browser incompatibilities, slow web browsing. There is no perfect handset out there!

  • Yes there is. If you change an element of the core OS, you need to optimize that element each time an OS update arrives, which slows down the update process. The more elements you customize, the more it takes to keep them all polished, and that makes updates come out months after stock Android devices get them. Some of Sony’s additions to Android, such as Small Apps, are useful for me and I’m glad to have them, but I don’t think Sony needs to have their own messaging app, clock app, calculator app etc. when their Google counterparts do the job just fine.

  • Pavlos Hadj

Personally , i like android to be as close to stock as possible. Better performance, no lag, fast updates. I tried touchwiz and didnt like it. Go on sony!

  • dzz

The more sony is closer to stock, the more developers will have less job to do and make updates release more faster.

  • ndedecker

I know you’re right. There really isn’t a perfect phone right now. I’m just kind of bitter about the issues I have sometimes with my phone. I would gladly stick with Android, I just think there are a couple serious issues that Sony needs to deal with because while a number of their changes to stock Android are fantastic, a few of them are terrible.

  • aryan1357

sony’s concept for android?? i think you sony should stop experimenting in the name of new concept for android. sony’s software is the thing that makes there smartphone’s unique in the market but now they are changing it to stock android.

  • Lukáš Pávl

Well if you are right then please tell me why even though SONY stripped it’s UI for 5.0.2 update then why they are a month late with updates than some other manufacturers with heavy graphic UI’s and lots of custom apps (HTC, Samsung).

  • Pavlos Hadj

Do you prefer no updates or slow updates?

  • rs

Besides, the theming and all UI changes on every single app in your phone are the reasons why every single OEM on the market being late of delivering updates
because they first receive the source code, made every aspect of the software out of it (kernel, system apps, libs etc), tested it, certify and then rollout

  • Lukáš Pávl

Maybe you can apply this to other OEMS but not Sony. They Will be late even with stock android.

  • Abhinav Tella

People generally prefer Android OEMs (HTC/Sony etc) icons over Google stock, I will try to find that article as it was a while back and polls usually back that claim…. Obviously there will also be people who like it though.

  • Fabi

Hey there… It is really the pure android ui. But it is an concept which is growing up with the 500 user of an Sony Xperia z3 who chosen. Sony collect all feedback from the community and bring weekly update to the user. So what u see are the first pics.

I’m a tester of the concept Rom since yesterday. I hope it will be better and better.

At least… I’m from Germany, not Sweden.

  • Vahid Sanati

This looks worse than stock android to me!

  • Timel

    Sony has no idea…

  • Lorenzo

    I really like it!
I was a nexus user, I bought a Z3 because the nexus 6 was too big for me, but I really like stock android design and smoothness.
I really appreciate this concept, and I hope to get this update really soon.
Also, a version of the firmware closer to stock android, means faster update, and sony develops really stable updates!

  • Ambroos

Remember that this is not a test for software stability or feasability, it’s Sony trying to estimate whether people buy a Sony for the hardware, software or both.

If it turns out the concept software is well-received in general, it’d mean Sony can get by in the software department with less resources and deliver Android faster (at the cost of a UI closer to stock Android). If people don’t like the software, it proves that people who buy Sony phones actually like the Sony interface, and it becomes a selling point.

  • Alfino Setya

Oh, Gosh! I’m going to back as an Iphone user after this, really! (°_°)

  • lovebmw

looks like its goig to be an android system lol, tometos tomatos

  • lovebmw

i am glad it is, we get to see faster updates

  • At that time, Sony Mobile’s profits were tanking so the company was facing big layoffs and restructuring, which again slowed down the updates. And I think removing additions to the software in order to strip back the customization takes some time too. You gotta make sure there’s no leftover code for those removed customizations and stuff.

  • Akand

Ok….everything is understood. But I didn’t understand one thing. You know what is that?
What does their “Concept” mean? I don’t see anything new here. Nothing.
I thought they’re working on something totally new and different. But more closer to stock android!!!!!!
More closer to stock, more far from Sony UI.

  • Akand

I am also confused and disappointed.

  • Akand

You need faster update?? Go for Nexus. Updatecrap!!!

  • David Wasp

    I like it !

Sony Phone with stock android with mild customizations, like wallpaper and few select quality apps with google apps (no bloatware) and extremely useful features like Stamina mode, white balance,… etc. I think this is a good concept.
Just to be unique add a deep customization theme engine, that not only changes the appearance of the Launcher UI but the Sony Provided apps also and that would be cool. For eg: Sony’s whats new app has an intersting UI if there is a theme that makes the whole UI like it, the apps should also change in appearance.

  • lovebmw

it’s not crap, like the security issues that your phone has right now? i work for the government and they just asked us to no longer use an android until that security issue through MMS is fixed. and that we are suppose to use BB or Iphone….. i have to buy a nexus now just so i can comply

  • Matt

Yes, instead of trying to replace every single Google app, Sony just embracing them, really like it.

I was disappointed at first. But hey my z3 has become xperia nexus!

Clean and optimised, plus a bit faster in update. Let Google work the basics and add Sony taste to it.

  • David Wasp

Yeah, a pure android phone with a Sony touch.

  • Timel

Can Sony remove this stupid and ugly animation from Xperia UI ? …So freaking annoying (-_-)

  • Matt

Exacty mate, would it be great if Sony instead of trying skinning and designing every app. They just concentrating on a couple of apps and make sure that the software will fly on their hardware.

They can concentrate more on let’s say .. Camera? Useful features?

  • Matt

Did you mean animation like the rest of Android?

Easy, dev option >animation disable it

  • Aiden Pearce

its android 5.1.1 with sony wallpaper and ugly navigation bar overlay. ui was 1 point i switched to Sony, if its what they going to push no thank you.

  • Arda Akca

I prefer uniqueness since my phone is not a cheap a** Chinese android one phone.

  • Aiden Pearce

we have been loving sony since their beautiful timescape UI, if this is what we get , its piece of garbage.

  • Aiden Pearce

exactly if we pay 50K and get same OS and customization as n shit Android One whats the point?

  • Pavlos Hadj

Have you ever used touchwiz? I have ..:p

  • rubinaish

Shall I be happy that my original Z won’t get those updates? Or shall I be unhappy sinec I won’t know what to get after this phone, since this “concept” is just not my taste at all?

  • Nawi

The icon and names of phone and messages are so ugly . Please use the Sony icons and names!!!!!!

  • raju

    It’s android stock

  • raju

    Mee too don’t like this

  • Arda Akca

I did with Note 2 and switched to Z Ultra. I have never wanted to go nexus after Sony. With its dark looks it was extremely classy. Google tried this with the google edition flagships and they were not huge successes. Why try again? I mean, if I am paying a premium price I demand premium hardware and software. Sony’s UI is already lag free, they just need to polish the looks and add few features as screen splitting and stuff. Even ipad will have it with ios9, if apple added the file manager then its almost over for Android actually :).

  • raju

    Xperia ui

  • I don’t think customization should be prioritized over update speed. If you want customization you can always install a launcher or a custom ROM.

  • Vahid Sanati

they’ve just changed some icons and named it a concept! weird!!

  • Arda Akca

By the way, what is it all about with the updates? If the software is already great I can wait a couple months more. Don’t let Sony fool you guys, they will market it as pure android experience but the reality is that they do not have the enough man power to pull of a complete UI overhaul after all those layoffs. I chose Sony because I liked the UI and the look of the hardware. Now if I wanted a phone hardwares are almost the same, UI is the same with the nexus, I would pay 150 $ less.
My 2 cents, it is horribly ugly. Can’t believe this is the same company that made the kitkat Sony UI.

  • Matt

yes because cheap chinese phone with transparent IOS like UI , and heavily skinned UI always get the best and the latest stable android update. . . . . oh wait they stuck on android 4.3 ?

  • Mark Netherwood

It’s a concept which looks OK. But I’ll wait for the finished UI. What you have to think as well things like the dock will be customisable. So I’ll wait for the finished UI.

  • Arda Akca

Well you can always buy a nexus in that sense.

  • Arda Akca

I believe I wrote android one.

  • …and give up water resistance, microSD slot, great battery life, and DUALSHOCK 3 connectivity. Sounds great.

  • Arda Akca

DS 3 is over. When I go stock I give up great aesthetics, small apps, grid adjustment and more. You can always install a stock rom ;)

  • Svnjay

  • Oh yes, I forgot about the Small Apps. Design is subjective, honestly I like stock and Xperia UI equally, so it doesn’t make any difference to me. Sony has to balance between aesthetics and fast updates somehow, but I firmly believe the latter is more important.

  • Svnjay

Sony said that the concept UI helps them to shorten update times.

  • Arda Akca

Well, different heads different thoughts. Sony should make a poll or something, 500 people from Sweden is not very decisive.

  • Tibor Hornyák

” Z3 owners in Sweden ” THIS IS NOT TRUE

I AM part of this concept’s testing, AND I am not SWEDISH……

  • Arda Akca

Hint for Sony, go to the guys that designed the What’s New app and ask them kindly to design the next UI. Please.

  • Since you edited one of your previous comments to tell me that I can flash a stock ROM, let me make it clear that I don’t want Sony to go stock Android, as that would be the end of the road for their useful (for me at least) software additions, such as Small apps and DS3 connectivity (which is still there on my Z2, so it’s only gone for new devices, thankfully). I just want faster updates, waiting 4 months (5 for earlier versions) for an update to arrive is quite long, but due to my specific preferences when it comes to features, I have nowhere to go but Sony. So anything that can potentially speed up updates is a plus in my book. I understand that some people want a more unique design instead, but some of the reasons they give for it are beyond ridiculous…

  • Matt

oh come on , i will take speedy and stable update any day , rather than UI thats a bit different but makes the software heavier

  • Arda Akca

Well you told us to install a custom rom mate :). That logic will not go anywhere. This move won’t draw lots of nexus users cause it ain’t cheap. But this move will definitely put off a lot of xperia owners by judging the comments. Kind of risky. Icons are really ugly by the way. The design of icons are not so much of a burden for updates, or the colors and fonts of the UI.

  • Arda Akca

    Sony UI is not heavy.

  • Lukáš Pávl

    And you really believe that?

  • Lukáš Pávl

I think that this is just scam because they don’t have people to do proper designing of the software so they just choose the easy way of doing things and just release stock Android UI as they own “stripped” and “customized” UI.

  • Svnjay

    Yes, Motorola has faster updates.

  • Aiden Pearce

i meant OEM customization not the user customization.

  • I love to have Sony Xperia UI like the stock Android.
I want the dialer from stock Android. …For message I use Hangout. For photos I use Google Photos. For video Youtube. For music sony music player. Keyboard from Sony. Camera from Sony, calendar from Google, email from google / inbox, contacts from google,. Also from Sony I use Smart conect and Scatch. But WTF with ”Whats new” or ”Longue” or other apps that I uninstall from the start.

OK. You ask me to move to Nexus . I have. But I like and I love the look and feel and style from my beautiful old Z Ultra. Sony need to fix this by make this concept real.

For exemple: Lenovo Vibe 2 Pro have from the box option to keep the ”Lenovo” experience or to move to ”stock Android”. Why Sony dont make the same to have all the customers happy?

  • Lukáš Pávl

    But Motorola isn’t Sony ;)

  • Jecht_Sin

Now there is even a third web browser? And get a rid of that stupid Google plus! People can download it if they really starve for that junk.

Oh, the UI is OK. If one likes minimalist things. Personally I’m getting tired of them already.

  • Matt

    Exacty, because it’s near stock

  • Niels d. G.

Well if they’re going that close to stock, it’d be easier to start from scratch

  • DBS

No, you won’t. It will still pass through Sony first, even if it looks like the crap Stock version.
Also, to get updates faster, you buy a Nexus. Then you get updates faster…along with all the bad things that also brings (if Google screws up, the OEM will not be able to fix it)

  • lovebmw

I partially agree, the less Sony modifies the faster they will upgrade it in the future can only be logically assumed. Not as fast as nexus, correct; however, it will be faster than the current update cycle.

  • Arda Akca

So no need for less Sony?

  • Pavlos Hadj

Which company is really able to make a good custom ui? Only htc maybe. Even samsung which is first in sales doesn’t, their ui is laggy. Also mind that sony’s ui is already the same as stock google. Only difference is themes, just colour changes and some icons. Is themes support so important to you? Regarding kit kat look i preffered it too.. But i still prefer a fast ui, which will make my device last longer than a slower, laggy custom ui.

  • DBS

The problem with Sony’s current update cycle (which isn’t bad at all) is that Sony is supporting A LOT of devices because of that stupid 6 month cycle they used to have. As the software has to be adapted to each phone, the more phones you have, the more it will take. Even if it ran stock Android.

  • lovebmw

Pretty sure had they kept it near stock even with same amount of phones…. Updates would be faster than what it is now.

Either way, I liking the near stock concept… Looking forward to it.

  • Xperia C5 Ultra was stolen , police arrested the guy who tried to sell kkkk

  • Pirre™

what if the concept is to keep the ROM as close to stock as possible and make all the additions and customizations as separate apps, like Google done with Google services etc?

  • Andre Lemard

That’s the point. It’s meant to be more closer to stock Android.

  • HAWX

Sony became a brand for rich people with low knowledge.

  • John Zakaria

So what is the difference between “This” And what we got now ?

  • Alvin

I know it’s just a prototype, but… It sucks. Hope the final ones could be great

  • Alvin

Since 5.0, sony is so google

Wrong! it can remove actually, just depends on Sony that they will remove it or not.

  • Svnjay

Why should they remove it? It’s a stock Android features that has been in all phones since gingerbread.

  • Edmun Alcívar

I really don´t care too much about faster updates, if I would want that i´ll buy a Nexus. One of the reasons i have a Sony Xperia is because of its UI, I love how it is right now, if they want to improve it or even do something completely new, they shouldn´t go to far from what they´ve done until now. I really have so many hopes on Sony to become even better than it is. =)

  • Amel_Marie

Its like my dream to see a Nexus from Sony.

  • ToasTd

Their uniqueness usually comes in the form of utter hideous and buggy software. You want that?

  • Timel

So what? Oh! may be you still don’t know that Xperia UI is not stock UI…?

Of course, Sony have used Android OS with their smartphones and Sony must follow the trend, yeah Sony Xperia UI can follow Google’s Material design but it doesn’t mean that Xperia UI must follow every elements from Materials design.

Like the animation that I mentioned in my above comment, That animation is freaking stupid and kiddish and it offend the eyes so bad. Sony Xperia UI should get rid of it.

    Wow! really!?

    I know that.

  • Timel

Stock UI is ugly and Sony will lose more and more customers.

So now I know that the Xperia Z5 will come with the Bad CPU, the Ugly and Cheap-looking UI and the shitty camera (old hardware + bad software)

  • Timel

Like I’ve always said, Sony Xperia isn’t Google Nexus, Sony need to make their own identities, originalities and uniqueness.

I want to see these things happen to Xperia UI in the near future

    1) Xperia UI lacks of smooth animation, every parts of the Xperia UI needs more smooth continuous animations for example the animation when open an app like Nokia Z Luncher

    2) All app icons, setting icons and other system icons they’re all should be circle.

    3) The Xperia UI need more transparency / glass-like effect (something like What’s new app) or the combination between flat and transparent like this

    4) Xperia UI needs the new colourful wallpaper/live wallpaper.

    5) The current Camera UI is too old, ugly and corny so the entire Camera UI need a serious overhaul.

    6) I hate the recent app screen, it’s so ugly. Sony must remove the small app bar from the bottom. The small app bar should hide in the right screen side, I mean user can swipe the small app bar out from the right edge whenever wanna use it (the small app bar always hide)

  • Abdullah Robben

Find two differences between the old UI and the new UI and win a car made by Sony

  • Arda Akca

Well you said it youself, sony ui is not laggy and why change the fpnts icons and fonts when yours is better? Simply not reasonable.

  • Arda Akca

    A good sense of Aesthetics

  • Arda Akca

    I agree.

  • Arda Akca

Sony’s UI is fast already. Uniqueness of a brand is important to me of course. If I wanted a faster than Sony’s UI, I would go with Apple anyday.

  • Raj Singh

    This seems very unnecessary.

  • M?rcis Buhholcs

Google plus and hangov… erm Hangouts got to go.
As for Sony apps – i would love to remove that Xperia Lounge (see no point in having it in my country) along with youtube live, but music, camera and album apps are really nice. Love them.

  • M?rcis Buhholcs

Did you root your phone? Because i just checked my Z3 Compact with Android 5.1.1
and i can’t uninstall neither Lounge nor What’s new.

  • Timel

“cheap chinese phone with transparent IOS like UI , and heavily skinned UI ”

    You mean Xiaomi?

  • Timel

Transparency effect make Android heavier? Ewe! What’s year you’ve lost in?

And according to your logic If Android is fatter because Transparent UI that means Android sucks!!!!! Flat + Transparent

Why even bother about such a small thing? Its there to show you that you have reached the bottom of the settings (or top) and it has done so since gingerbread! Stop whining about small things and tell Sony to focus on the big things instead of this….

  • Emil Oskarsson

Yet there is not a single smartphone developer that have update so many devices to lollipop in such a short time as Sony have …. Instead of focusing on a update for just one device they focused to release it for several devices at the same time which takes longer time!

  • HAWX

True. Because they cut many of their designers jobs.

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

Can not see difference between old and new UI except stock icons

  • HAWX

Then your brand WAS not Sony. Go watch Xperia Z / Z1 / Z2 commercials.
“Details makes the diffeence” “Sony detail” “Design that tells you a story”…
Sony is a brand for it’s uniqueness and design. And their phones are more expensive compared to almost same spec phones. The extra expense that you pay for Sony, is DESIGN. If you take that out and still make it expensive like Z3+, it will be a choice for rich people with low knowledge. (Or few people who can’t miss Sony only feature like remote play )

But now, copy and paste what Google looks like. That’s what cheaper phone manufacturers doing for a long time. Sony clearly does not want to make effort. I guess it’s because they fired almost all of their designers.

Sony should give us options. When setting the phone up it should ask us if we want an Android or a Sony UI experience. If we choose Sony, it can download the necessary files and themes on start-up. Everyone will be happy by that way I guess. By doing this they can clearly see what a xperia user wants with the UI because they’ll have statistics about it.

  • Khillo81

    You mean like Apple?

  • Sure, when you have no real reply, sidetracking and denial works too… And upvoting yourself is beyond sad.

  • You’re upvoting your own comments? LMAO!
I said that you can install a custom ROM if you buy your phone for customization. If you want to keep Sony features with that, you can install a custom launcher or, for more customization, Xposed. Sony wants to prioritize faster updates over design, which is okay for most people and most reviewers like the way Material design looks. If you think otherwise, I’m sorry. Go for another brand.

Yes I do upvote them cause if someone sorted the the best comments my ideas could be seen. Don’t see the funny side if I am not 4 years old actually.
By looking at the comments, people think otherwise. They want unique software tweaks over faster updates. Anyways, do not worry I will go for a different brand if the next UI is crappy like that, and if Sony does not stop the nonsense you will soon go for another brand also.

  • jxPerience

Honestly, i don’t like android.. I am just sticking with this OS because of Sony, if sony xperia will end up like this, i swear i will never ever buy a sony phone again. Please sony, make difference, stop for this near stock UI BS thing.

  • jxPerience

buy nexus not xperia, i will never sacrifice such a beautiful UI than having updates on time. NEVEEEEERRRRR

  • jxPerience

well, just see doctor.. maybe he could help you

  • jxPerience

Really? what about u? a member of rich family with low knowledge?

  • Brick

I respect your opinion but please no transparent crap. This isn’t windows Vista or Mac OS, material design is lightweight and beautiful, doesn’t need any transparencies.

  • jxPerience

me too… for me i think i will end up with iphone if sony goes like this

  • That’s ridiculous. No one else upvotes himself. If your comments are good someone else will upvote them. I will not argue anymore with a person who upvotes himself.
The “nonsense” that Sony is doing depends on your perception. In my perception, Sony didn’t do anything particularly wrong aside from abolishing DS3 support and shrinking the battery in Z3+. So I don’t see myself switching to a new brand soon.

if they want resources, they should stop producing non selling entry level to mid end models. For faster updates, the lesser the device the faster the update will be. Just focus on Z series. make each or every half of the year 4 devices under Z series, compact, phone, ultra, tablet

  • jxPerience

i hope it is just a first step and the latter part it will end up as fully overhauled

  • cyleo

I don’t get it either. Besides, I for one would love faster updates and fluid, fast software on Sony Hardware in addition to the Sony Core apps.

  • HAWX

What’s the connection about my family with my argument?
    Haven’t you read the comments?

how to shut off animations ?

  • Arda Akca

Well I respect your choice and you may the whatever you want. Sort the comments as the best and you’ll see which opinions are upvoted the most. So Sony moving to stock will not generate a good welcome from most of the users. That is a fact whether you like it or not. Losing more customers is definitely a bad idea at this stage. Google tried this and it failed, why keep doing the same mistake? It is not my perception it is math. I refer to statistics and you keep telling us your own opinions, I believe it is your perception.

  • jxPerience

u said people, means majority, all users including me and rest of the people here. It couldn’t hurt us if u quote “Sony a big brand with low knowledge” instead.

  • HAWX

Ok I edited my comment. Btw I mean by the launch of Z3+. Because from Z to Z3, Sony had an important advantage compared to it’s rivals. (Design)

Now they don’t. External design is repeating itself hard and internal design is not good compared older UI. And Xperia’s are still expensive.

  • Google tried what and failed? And what math? The average consumer, which this fanboy-filled comments section is NOT representative of, doesn’t care about UI design or updates, but they do care about a stable, bug-free software, and that’s easier to provide with less customizations. If Sony could afford to customize the UI extensively without it compromising updates and stability thereof, I would be all for a new design, but they can’t. They fired a big part of their workforce and now they have to adapt.

They were also the last to update their phones.

  • Arda Akca

Google tried the pure android editions of flagships, thats why it was left dead. Sony had all the time in the world for a new UI design. Heck, the present UI looks better than that. Samsung is the top android brand right now, so I think what you say doesn’t have any ground about updates and stability. People go for features and specs. Plastic s and note series already proved that. Now Sammy corrected the plastic build and people complain about sd card and battery but S6 is a huge success eventhough they had a very strong rival iphone 6 and plus this year. I can already see the media saying how dull and boring the new UI is. Softwarewise, the design of the UI is the only thing that keeps the OEMs unique at the end of the day. Sony is not Motorola, its customers are different. Its still in early stages so I hope Sony adds more appeal to it. Math in that sentence: sales figured, customer requests and so on.

  • What Sony have done in their version of Lollipop is perfect as it is, just don’t change what works well and better than other OEMs I say. Cleaner is always nicer, but I like what SOny have applied to stock Android and the little tweaks and changes work really well. It’s also so smooth and fast on my Z3 (5.1.1).

Dare I say it, because of the tweaks, it’s a better experience than a Nexus too.

It doesn’t look that different to these “concept” screenshots either, the volume control window looks different of course, I prefer the current one in 5.1.1.

  • Matt

nope never said that and didnt even slightly suggest that at all.

oh IOS? im not in the mood comparing android and IOS.
oh wait , i have to get a file from my computer, let me use my z3 as a usb . .

  • Matt

that is true , what you said.

but cheaper manufacturer doesnt produce a great glass build with waterproofing monolith phone , which is what experia line are.

i never suggest that sony have to abandon everything and surrender to google and their language of UI. Instead just take an advantage of it. use the Material design that already clean, and adapt it to speak sony language with useful feature to win against competition.

i do not know what is happening inside sony, and i do not like saying they fired their designers or the need to do this or that. its jsut a bunch of baseless claptrap.

but by the look of it they are pointing to the right way.

    clean software
    material with sony twist
    not-broken update

  • HAWX

I give credits to Sony for making waterproof smartphone because Samsung got a bit screwed up with S5. Waterproofing is the one of few feature that people will select Z3+ over other phones. Unfortunatelly, waterproofing is not a critical feature to determine most people’s phone, like what happened in Japan for Z3+.

Yeah I know stock andorid like design will be better for faster updates, but me and most of people I know didn’t buy Xperia devices for that. They bought it for it’s desgin.

Looks like you give more importance trends and funciton in UI. Well I respect on that. But there are some people angry with Sony because the UI change in Lollipop. Most people I know buy Sony devices because of the desgin factor Eg: Me, Arda, DBS in this forum. I care about how the phone looks externally and also internally. Yeah maybe how the phone looks internally won’t change it’s function much but you should think some other people as well.

    I’ll give you an example:

You state Xperia line have Monolith design, I agree on that as well, but they had classy internal design as well, in 4.2-4.4 times (most people agree on that as well). So when you replace the classy internal design ,which has harmony with phone’s external design as well, phone’s overall design will be 50% worse for some people. If you consider you’re looking the phone’s screen more than phone itself, ratio will be worse actually.

    Another example:

If the Xperia line starts to be like Motorola looking phones, but it’s UI and functions like waterproofing will be same, would you buy it?

If Sony Xperia team wants to be more stock like andorid in UI and keep it’s options like waterproofing, and still going to be a bit expensive, it won’t be my brand of choice. Maybe htc will be.. But my complaint is this radical change in the looks of the phone compared to it’s older cassy looking.

well thats my point? They waited a bit longer until they were done with the update for all of the specific z lines of smartphones. Instead of focusing on just a few and then maybe after the summer update the rest…

  • Emil Oskarsson

Settings -> about phone -> klick on Version number (for example 10.5.1.A.0.283) about 3-4 times (just spam click it). Then it will sasy that you are now a developer. Go back to the opening menu and developer options will be just over the “about phone” column :)

This is great. Dont understand the flame. If you ever used stock, you know how good it is. If you ever used sony fw Features like walkman (sound), you dont want to miss them either. Problem is that porting is hard many times & often Features not work. See the camera on stock how much it sucks. So this is perfect. Stock (clean) ui with the sony features i really use, like. Anyway you still have the choice for the full blown oem skin xperience ;) – so dont flame around, be happy they give you a choice..

Anyway this will also help the devs to bring some stuff to custom roms etc. Nice move Sony, will be my next Phone.

They have to cut costs, they are bleeding money heavily. What did you people expect? It is better for them to go for almost stock, cut costs and speed up updates than go bankrupt and sell the whole mobile division.

  • Naos

This is to cut costs and speed up updates.

As many others, you just dont understand what it is about. The full blown Sony stock ROMs will continue to exist. This “Concept” is Sony reply to growing Open Source community demand for simple AOSP-like ROM with Sony drivers and some apps (like camera) integrated. It gives people opportunity to enjoy almost vanilla Android, with all development possibilities. This is in no way pointed towards general public.

good, i applaud you for giving a civilized reply and really based on logic.

i , myself would defer on using the word design because it is a big and heavy word that almost always thrown around easily. Apart from that lets get to the point .

(im still on kitkat , if that is saying something) xperia has a beautiful outer shell , no discussion there. it is. But the thing about software is , it is abstract . What i feel about material is , it is not only flat (although it incorporates many flat element), it defines how software should behave, like how far the animation goes, or bounces , or how the card like UI opens when you click them. Not just is should be transparent or it should mimic real world like adding silver knob every where.

so my hones question to you HAWX , and probably the others too. how can a phone have a harmony between UI and hardware if the UI itself conflicted. Let me explain , we are bound to google playstore and gmail, and other google services either we wanted to or not. yes the kitkat UI is good looking for us , but it clashes with google apps and by that nature the xperia only feel whole as a device until the homescreen .

but , if now sony reshape material to their flair (just like what they do now) , wouldt it be better ? i know the sony flair arent as much or dark as we wanted to , but since lockscreen we know it is an xperia . Plus we still have an awesome full featured Music app. Plus we get more stable update quicker?

and then there is the fact that sony isnt going to dark theme any time soon. besides the kitkat UI is a gradual iteration of xperia ui since xperia s like was out and about, dont you think it is time to change soon ? its getting old. What i do not get is this :

xperia UI unchanged = boo no innovation , why change only the app drawer? look at the weather widget still looks exactly the same

new xperia UI = oh , uninspiring material booooo , the old one was better.

To answer your question , if xperia has stock UI with same body would i buy it ? a HUGE YES im a fan of nexus defice wich wouldnt be a surprise by now. and im in haven knowing my z3 wich will be updated to 5.1.1 soon is basically nexus++ .

  • Mac

Gotta admit I kinda feel you here. I can’t think of another phonebrand I’d pick but Sony and their own ui is half the reason I guess
