Sony Stereo Bluetooth Headset SBH54_BSony Mobile announced the Stereo Bluetooth Headset SBH54 at IFA a couple of weeks back, the update to the popular Smart Bluetooth Handset SBH52. The big feature of these accessories is that it includes a handset function which means they can be used directly to take and make calls.

The Stereo Bluetooth Headset SBH54 is crafted from “premium metal” and comes with a monochrome OLED display so that you can see your messages and play music from the screen. Other features include a FM radio, NFC, Bluetooth 3.0 and a splash-proof design. The SBH54 headset will last for five hours in terms of talk time and takes an hour to charge. The headphones also feature echo, wind and noise cancellation. UK retailer Clove has priced the headset and expects it to cost £69.99 when it launches in the middle of October.

Whats the difference between SBH52 and SBH54 apart from design?

  • Eduardo Otero

It is just gorgeous. I’ve gotta buy them!!

  • Akand

I am using SBH50 for about 2 years. But I am not satisfied with its sound quality.

  • Amimanot

Reminds me of the ol’ MW600. Still have it in working condition to this day

  • fluxx

It’s gorgeous, but I really had to read twice to understand what it does :D

  • Alexey Morozov

    Sony Style

  • Timel

    Bluetooth 3.0? Come on!

  • Bur

Wish this would come with the preorder :(

  • Clarence Alvarado

    Does it support LDAC?

  • Camilo Uribe

    SBH52 V2 !! Yeah !!!!

  • Camilo Uribe

    Bluetooth 3.0
    noise cancellation
Handset function (which means they can be used directly to take and make calls)
    splash-proof design

  • Nils Westhoff

    Apt-x or GTFO.

  • Danny

Looks great, but 5 hours, really? that’s a step down here. I have a SBH20 and it lasts five hours, too. My SBH52 have great quality sound, works wonderful, and last 8 hours. Still, it’s too little for me. I need Sony to release something with more juice, perhaps 10 hours long.

  • jag

SBH52 can take and make calls too right?

  • mixedfish

    Sony NW-M505 Walkman.

  • vprmn

you can use other headphones with this …

  • Bruno

    Bluetooth 3.0
Handset function (which means they can be used directly to take and make calls)
    splash-proof design

    SBH52 have all of them

    The uncovered usb is something
    Metal another

  • Bruno

4.0 is just for devices with very low power consuption. Witch is not the case for a device with contant band

  • vzangel

Me too! I use it on daily basis.

  • Utsav Shah

Well, I still use MW600 with my W705. And yes, both are working.

  • Ailan Hidaz

Bluetooth 3.0? In a world filled with 4.1?

  • GigaSPX

Looks of great quality and build, but it looks like we know what’s the next upgrade gonna include: better battery life. :P

  • Confruggy

the far as I know, no.

  • TRZK

I also got one. I had the SBH-20 before I lost it. I decided afterwards to upgrade to the SBH50 and I haven’t looked back since. The battery life is amazing on this thing, which is nice to have because that was my main issue with the SBH20, it lasted about half as long as the SBH50. It’s also nice to have a readout of the battery life.

I also wanna say that despite the SBH50’s lack of noise-cancellation, I don’t feel any temptation to upgrade, which is odd because I usually like having the newest stuff. I think I might even prefer the design aesthetics of the SBH50.

  • TRZK

You can use different headphones with the both of them but I wouldn’t be surprised if the SBH50 would lose it’s noise-cancellation features in such a scenario.

  • EPGuest

Wow. This thing is stylish as fuck.

  • gtop

Yep, the late great MW600 vibes struck me too. That awesome thing is a beast and mine is still working and will probably outlive me. But the flakey touch-based volume control drove me bonkers …

  • gtop

One thing to note is that the noise cancellation feature is single mic for in-call use only – so not when playing music, according to:

  • gtop

Bluetooth 4 has no additional audio features over 3, so it’s not really needed.

  • Timel

I don’t think that’s right. BT 4 is a low energy protocol which enables to connect to BT enabled devices while consuming less energy. I don’t think it has to do with the BT device itself being of low power consumption.

  • rygarto

SBH-50 never had any noise cancellation beyond standard in-call NC.

Certainly not the ANC featured on Z2 and up, for that you’d need another handsfree model called MDR-EX31BN which is sold mostly in Japan (and online).

  • rygarto

looking at the ear buds, the new SBH54 doesn’t have anything the SBH50 doesn’t, except maybe voice command support (hopefully).

To get bluetooth ANC (which I dub Actual Noise Cancellation) which also featured in your Z2 and up, you’d need MDR-EX31BN handsfree, which uses the same NC earbuds (MDR-NC31EN) that come with the Z2. You can easily recognize them by the 5-pin headphone jack.

I wish Sony would unify its language – the “Noise Cancellation” on SBH54 is in-call only.

  • rygarto

that’s a NO about the noise cancellation. The NC one mentioned in this PR is “in-call” noise cancellation, not the ANC (actual/active NC) featured on Z2 and up. For ANC, you’d need to use MDR-NC31EN headphones with a 5 pin jack, and not the regular buds shown in the PR photo.

  • rygarto

Shame, I had two of these and they both conked out on me, supposedly battery trouble. Couldn’t turn them on except with charger connected. I loved the voice dialing on this one, though.

  • rygarto

look for MDR-EX31BN if you want apt-X. you’ll get ANC in a portable package, too!

  • imparanoic

Natural update to ok sbh52 which I got, same features, just classic design and metal chassis, mw600 /or mh100 which comes with aino are nice design, but the flatness of sbh52 seems better in my opinion

  • agujeronegro

Buy another headphones, I did it and the sound quality is really better.

  • Dummy FP

    For HD Voice it seems…

  • Dummy FP

Apparently, no big differences and very slight advantage. It has all the features. NC as someone mentioned may not be active one. Except the design change, I do not see anything.

  • Aldo Abad Linares Ali

I’m really dissapointed by SonyMobile remaking this flashy handset. IMO the best (or most advanced) smartphone companion is the Sony Walkman NWZ-M504 the japanese NW-M505. Sadly this is a 2014 model and I wonder why there are no newer versions until now :'( . At this moment I have the Smart Wireless Headset pro and simply is the best from SonyMobile

Surprisingly there is no special speaker on SBH54, disappointed :(

  • sonus

the lack of except maybe voice command support is pretty ridiculous on Sony’s items. This used to be a ubiquitous feature on even the lowest end Sony bluetooth headphones/headsets.

  • Srivatsa J

I’m using the earphones of MW600 with MW1 device. The earphone’s left ear is not working now and i really miss it :(
Is there any other alternative short headset to buy like the one we get with MW600???

  • riveryic

hello. sorry for my english first of all.
i need to ask one question only. i have mdr-nc31em headphones from z2. if i buy sbh54, can i use it with noise cancellation function like on z2? i ask it because i have sbh52 which doesnt have nc and i really want to have nc comfort. my phone is not sony xperia anymore, o it will work or no with spotify and other applications the anc?
