Has the Xperia Marshmallow update been delayed? Telstra says it is

by XB on 18th January 2016

in Android, Firmware, Sony Tablet, Xperia Z4 and Z3+ series

Android 6.0 MarshmallowSony Mobile has been careful not to overpromise on when the Android 6.0 Marshmallow will officially start to roll on Xperia handsets. Apart from the successful Concept for Android program, which has been successfully rolling the latest versions of Android 6.0 to Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact participants, news on the official Marshmallow rollout has been quiet.

Sony has still not released any expected ETA, but last October Australian carrier Telstra indicated that a January 2016 launch looked likely. Now the same carrier has updated its software update page to confirm that Marshmallow for the Xperia Z4 Tablet “has been delayed” and they are currently waiting on Sony “to revise submission date”. Given the lack of official information right now, this is the best we can go on, but we’re still hopeful that the update will start to roll in the coming weeks.

Sony Always Late Latif regarding Software Updates. Hope after waiting long we’ll get stable update.. not like full of bug update like Sony releases always..Waiting to get Marshmallow for my Xperia M4 Aqua Dual E2363.

“The update has been delayed & pending Sony to revise submission date.”

  • fluxx

Last time I was angry about the communication, but happy with the results. If they don’t promise anything this time and deliver a good update, that would be perfect. So take your time Sony!

  • jag

It’s gonna be Legen – WAIT for it… dary!!!!

  • Zoran

    so what?

  • Nav

At least provide a road map!!

  • Brick

I’d rather wait and get a fully working update. There really is no hurry to get the update, I don’t understand why people want it so badly.

  • I wanted to switch to CM 12.1 but my phone says that i can’t unlock my bootloaders.. :(

In my view, one of the reasons for Sony to delay the update is because of the issue with small apps and Marshmallow restrictions on running overlay app. Sony execs think removal of small apps will be viewed as feature reduction unique to Sony, hence Sony needs to rethink about that. Just my guessing though, seeing the concept ROM still missing the small app launcher

  • Frode P. Bergsager

I am happy with using Concept M as a beta, but would say it is not ready for public release yet.
There are still some known bugs, plus some unknown.

In some way I hope that my spontanous reboots and Bluetooth issues are unique to my phone, but I think it is a software problem.

  • And talking about updates, just saw this news (in portugueses) saying that, despite the brand (Sony Mobile) is not so strong compared to Samsung (here in Portugal) , it´s the best when we talk about updates.

  • ShinOrochiX

Unfortunately, this being Sony means that the update will be late and buggy. From my Xperience (hahaha?) Sony have never delivered a new android version bug free-even with a delay. There is defo gonna be something wrong, battery drain, low speaker volume…the possibilities are endless!

I shall stop there before I turn into Timel.

  • Emily

Frode, have you had an update since middle of December?

  • Emil Oskarsson

Well thats pretty much the same in Sweden. Sure we might have to wait maybe a couple of weeks or a month more then other manufacturers, But we do get a fully functional update without bugs (huge bugs), and they do update SEVERAL phones/tablets at the same time. And once they have started to roll out an update for one z line for example, the older z series have gotten the same update shortly after. Compared to Samsung, HTC, LG and more Sony is the BEST manufacturer when it comes to updates after the Nexus program and possibly Motorla.

  • Emil Oskarsson

I havent had any bugs on any of my Xperia handsets when a new android version has ben launched. Maybe you did something wrong on your end?

  • Emil Oskarsson

Because they do update more handsets at the same time compared to other manufacturers. How hard is it for all of you to understand that????!!!…..

  • FYLegend21

Making it exclusive for the upcoming Z6 or Z5+ perhaps?

There’s a ridiculous bug in Ultra Stamina Mode where you get stuck with a UI intermediate between it and regular mode and most apps disappear or stop working. Users have reported it from Z1 to Z5… The only solution I could find was to do a factory reset…

  • Very popular here in Portugal

  • Chuck

If it’s going to be late, it had better be optimized. There are far too many bugs on Lollipop on my Z2, even after a factory reset which I was forced to do.

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

Man,I have a lot of bugs too on my Z2 that´s why I want M,to have the better OS for the Z2,M fixes all the broken things that came with L.

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

The Z5 series have not 6.0,when Z3,2 gen old, have a Beta release,we would be less angry if they release it for more phones, they can´t put the kernel of Z3 on Z2 or Z5,

  • sebastianer

Come on Google…release a compact Nexus!! (a 2016 compact nexus with Galaxy Nexus or Z5 Compact size/resolution would be great).

  • azzido

This is because in Barcelona they will show Z6 and want Z6 to be first that will have new Android while older phones will need to wait.

Marshmallow for sure is ready for all Z series but again it is another “business” decision to delay it and create new “selling feature” for Z6…

Sad but true, one of the things I do not like about Sony, their “business decisions” for delays…

I had reboots several times a day with original 5.1.1, but they disappeared after I installed Concept M in beginning of November.
    No reeboots for 3 weeks.
Then I installed 2157 update in end of November, and my phone started rebooting again.
With Android 5.1.1 I didn’t have to enter PIN-code for each reboot, but with Concept M reboots I had to enter PIN each time. Now I have disabled PIN code checking…

  • Em

Same here. Reboots with 5.1.1, then stopped with concept M. I’m on 3027 update, and still rebooting. Rebooted today in fact when I went to take a video. I’m hoping for another update of concept M shortly.

  • Frode P. Bergsager

    3027 here also.
According to Restart Logger app it has restarted 180 times since 18th December.
My Bluetooth device list is getting wiped about once a week, and I have to resync my SmartWatch 3, handsfree, TomTom GPS and other equipment again.

  • Em

Yikes! That’s definitely a problem. And very frustrating. I don’t sync bluetooth, and its very random when it happens to me. They were on a roll before with updates, so hopefully they get back on track.

  • MoYeung

You have insider information that Android 6 is ready?

  • Luís Alberto Pérez

Agreed. But in the past Sony was one of the worst about updates. They improve a lot in this matter.

  • im having problems on my Z2 too.

  • Luís Alberto Pérez

“Sony have never delivered a new android version bug free-even with a delay”… neither Google… Lollipop 5.0, 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 were crap from Google… I almost send my Nexus 7 against the wall… wanted to smashed it so hard… Only 5.1.1 was better and KitKat 4.4.4 was excellent before Lollipop update. Sony was smart and skipped 5.0 and 5.0.1
Sony’s 5.0.2 was so much better than Google’s version. I don’t mind waiting a few weeks for a good update than a fast and crappy one…

  • illstplaya .

Every manufacturer is taking a long time with the marshmallow update. Only Motorola updated most of their phones already. And only a couple of HTC phones got the update. Sony isn’t the only one taking forever to release the update

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

Lg Already,Moto already,HTC already,Samsung in process.. But.. LG and HTC have heavy UX´s. Sony it´s almost pure Google, why they take so long? The same happened to 5.0.2 .28 and.. We´re on .264 and still bugs,it´s not begin maniac of updates,it´s that I want the update that fixes all that L brokened.

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

Come on,you think that they can´t do a “little” update in several months? Yeah,we got L,but L is the worst thing that ever happened to Android,5.1 fixed few things, yeah, but Marshmallow is the redeption of Google to Android.

  • Melvin Mejia

I own the Xperia Z2 and I don’t have any big issues or bugs im running lollipop 5.1 but Im not sure if want Marshmallow 6.0 I don’t like the new concept slide the apps on vertical mode on Marsmellow and I hope Sony Keep all the widgets is already to many bad changes like change the Walkman app for music etc…

  • Geese Howard

Always appreciate Sony for not rushing things… they had this improved over the years – hey, at least they don’t jump to the gun and give us a fucked up update just for the sake of it like ‘some’ companies out there.

Haven’t experienced any bugs on z2 at all, and that’s on 2 different devices! My friends devices to be exactly :p

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

Yesterday I had a bug in lockscreen, the pin input of my password were up the notifications, but with no transparency, torch icon gone on quick toggles bug, random reset of UI,bug of boing scrolling (when you scroll too fast, when touch the border,it boing, and many others headaches that I have find on my Z2,since .28 came,5.0 broke Android’s performance, and M is here to fix it

  • azzido

  • Zezadas Moreira

qualidade deixa um pouco a desejar

  • Emil Oskarsson

Huh that’s thing I have never heard of before :S anyway seems to be something wrong on your install of Android 5.0 try to factory reset the phone :p

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

Man,I did,Sony´s rom it´s not perfect,a lot of people have bugs,it´s not how much they take to optimize,it´s how much they optimize, they have an close stock UI,they just have to optimize sources, let the people try and fix,how complicated is to understand that?

  • Pingback: Has the Xperia Marshmallow update been delayed? Telstra says it is()

  • none of that ever happened to me, the ROM doesn’t have any bugs I’ve noticed

  • Phazonclash

It’s a shame considering I HATE with a passion these “small apps” and are the first thing I disabled when I got my Z5.

  • hansip

Well i don’t know but have you tried my small apps? you might change your mind but seeing you have removed it from the get go i doubt you will.
