Xperia Z5 gets $60 price cut in US a week after launch

by XB on 15th February 2016

in Xperia Z5 series

Xperia Z5 Compact thumbThe Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact officially launched into the United States on 7 February at a price point of $599.99 and $499.99 respectively. Sony was criticised not only for the time it took to launch the unlocked handsets into the US, but also for removing the fingerprint sensor functionality.

Therefore, it is perhaps no surprise to see the price of both handsets reduced just a week after launch. The Xperia Z5 has been reduced by $60 to $539.99 on, whilst the Xperia Z5 Compact has dropped by $50 to $449.99. If you were considering picking up one of these models, has this price drop convinced you to press that ‘buy’ button? Or does the limitation on the fingerprint sensor still put you off? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

    Patiently waiting for the Z6.

  • It’s tough. I know overall the phones are the same and the thought of a US based warranty is nice (knock on wood, never needed one for any international version of any Xperias I’ve bought in the past), it may not be enough to make me buy it.

The only thing that would? Confirmed full support for VoLTE and Band 12 on T-Mobile in the US. If you want to fully support the US market, this has to happen and if you’re going to do it, may as well with the US release of these phones. I’m anxiously awaiting overall news about Marshmallow for all phones next week at MWC too. :)

Weather app now available to all

Sony Weather app ready for download, exclusive to Xperia devices only

It seems like this whole thing is deliberately orchestrated to sabotage Sony Mobile.

I would, if I need a new phone….but 14 months on, I am still very happy with my Xperia Z3 Compact.

    Swiftly into the bargain bin.

  • iia3ezu

A weather app that is only exclusive to Xperia handsets, now that should be quite a resounding success. /s

    That bitch better be good.

Agree. It will sabotage Sony and the decision-makers will lose their jobs. How can people that stupid become management?

  • agramonte

exactly – they need to do what htc did with the A9 and get T-Mobile volte, WiFi calling and band 12 certifications. I get no service in my apartment with no band 12 support. why I’m still holding on to my T-Mobile branded z3

  • the decision makers never lose their jobs, only the regular staff is downsized. The top management somehow manages to survive and same will be the case with Sony if something like that happens. But i really wish otherwise because i really dont know that after Sony mobile, which brand i would be considering to buy.
Sony should stop kidding around and actually start selling phones around the world as we all know they are more than capable to kick some OEMs out of the league.

  • Wait an year then.

I was wondering. Is the whole fingerprint sensor removed, or just the software behind it?

  • Emil Oskarsson

Z3 compact is still a great phone, just like my old Xperia Z :D

  • marcyff2

I recomend either opo or lg when you move away from sony. OPO are cheap but quite good phones, and lg has delievered pretty heavily on their last 2 phones. Huge sony fan but the G4 turned my head

  • marcyff2

My guess is the whole thing, the only reason to do it is price and the software costs them nothing as is just installing it into a new device while the sensor is expensive

  • thefaze

    No Verizon compatibility, no dice.

If you ask me, fingerprint sensor is crappy addition to phones

  • LuvMusic

Meh……so disappointed with Sony’s efforts in the U.S. / North America. I owned a Z1 and Z3. Now they release the Z5, late in it’s product life cycle, They even delete the finger-print scanner, which for me, is an impotent feature…especially if you are using any of the “pay” apps. IMO, nothing to get excited about. I have moved on for now. When Sony gets serious about the U.S., I MAY give them another shot.

Price cut is good, and it will be more sucfesfull if it gets more price cuts before the launch of the new 820 flagships. But main purposes I won’t go with Z5 and Z5C are:

    1) Moving objects in the screen leaves behind kind of trails. Its like pixels are changing its colours slowly. This is becauae of the screen itself some people say, not because of the software. But this is the no1. turn off for me. In my most apps screen moves quite fast like scrolling in facebook.

    2) Edges are too sharp . Although Xperia Z-Z2 are sharp but they don’t hurt me. But Z5 and especially Z5C is too sharp for me while taking it up or holding it with 2 hands :/

    3) It doesn’t looks sexy as older Sony Z flagships IMO.

  • Well as long as the company is breathing, i do not intend to go for any other brand but if bad things happened then i would definitely go for the Nexus. I like the G4 and waiting to see what the G5 has got but i dont consider to buy LG unless it is a Nexus.

  • hmmm

If it’s there for the rest of the world, why is not there for us???when this happend with another brand??never

  • RJKMadison

That is exactly what I am waiting to see – TMO compatibility with VoLTE and Band12.

  • J Cav the Great

I believe that Sony Xperia Series are the Best Looking Phones On Earth! With that said. I am done with Sony. As an American, in the American Market, i have been screwed over and over again. I purchased the Z3 from T-Mobile, just for it to go down to $500 two weeks later.i waited for the Z4/Z3+, that didn’t happen. Took T-Mobile months to give the 5.0.2 update, Z5 was not initially offered in the U.S. , by the time it is now, they remove the fingerprint sensor. There is just no winning in the USA market when it comes to Sony, their phones are not offered here unlocked, and if you take the carrier route, you don’t get updates.
