Xperia Beta update lands next week with all apps to SD card (23.5.A.1.203)

by XB on 26th May 2016

in Firmware, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 series

Beta Marshmallow XperiaSony Mobile will release a new Beta Marshmallow firmware update next week for those in the beta program. Build number 23.5.A.1.203 will have 400 fixes and improvements according to Sony. Among the changes, includes a new option of being able to transfer all apps to the SD card.

Fixes include the ‘Unknown call/private number’ bug (from stored contacts) as well as the Calendar application crashes. The update will land for those on the Beta programme next week, this includes select users of the Xperia Z2 (D6503), Z3 (D6603) and Z3 Compact (D5803).

Beta beta beta and beta. It’s good though, but we’re waiting optimization updates for our Z5’s too…

  • Vinicius Araujo

They should work on adaptive storage instead

  • SM

When MM is coming on XC4?

  • ????? ????????

Isn’t “being able to transfer all apps to the SD card” the same as adaptive storage on Android M?

  • Sergio

    How ’bout never? :V

  • Joe Black

    No.

  • Vinicius Araujo

Hmm, I really hope so :) But I’m not sure, maybe they will just improve the default “transfer to SD card” function.

  • Really proud of what Sony is doing! Let´s hope to see if this is similar in some way with the adaptive storage. However, i’m still waiting for MM on my Z2 ahaha

  • CyNoob

    I know right… seriously

  • Alvin

    It’s different

  • Akand

My Z5C stacked at 6.0 with February security patch level. And it’s almost June. Though I’m not worried about security. But it’s still pathetic.

  • Ercann Y?ld?z

    M4 aqua please marswallow

  • Benjamin Levy

A function to transfer all apps to the SD card would be useful. I miss Lollipop’s function to transfer apps to the SD card when you run low on memory. That disappeared in Marshmallow and currently I have to manually go through the apps and see if I can move them (and then do it again when the apps update).

The problem with using the adaptive storage fuction is the sd card speeds. If people use a slow sd card and integrate it with the internal storage, then guess to who they are going to complain when the phone is lagging. I think is a good move from Sony to stay away from it at the moment, although I would love to have the option (but I would still not use it). Being able to transfer the data of the apps on the card is good enough from me atm

  • Thariq Mohammed

I need FTF file for Xperia Z2 to flash the beta. Anyone got the link to download?

  • adibuyono

Is there any diffrerent between Xperia beta and xperia concept?

  • sam navann

    how about xperia C5 Ulrta???

  • Kwstakhs

Damn,I still don’t have Marshmallow on my Z3c

  • KIMI

And again no news for Z5 smh..
At this point, I feel as though Sony is deliberately trying to abandon the Z5 userbase.

  • hansip

Yeah.. Although it’s fine for most cases with 6.0, all the improvement should have been posted to Z5 too.. like Bluetooth got stuttering after a while.

  • Robcartoon

This is a good move and those that have the beta programe will enjoy. We others just wait patiently as Iam sure we will still get all this things later in the future. I have a Z2(D6503) and am still on lollipop. No MM updates so far in Kenya but it will still come. Am certain of tht.

  • Raj Singh

Fuck, man. It’s discouraging to think it’s that hard to put out a stable release. I’m flummoxed.

  • Raj Singh

S the FU. Why you asking that shit here? Are you expecting a legit answer?

  • Saeed

    For Z3 Dual D6633?

  • ramuk

    What happened to your Z3C?

  • Natxo Baraja

“Next week”, it’s in the title.

  • Matt

very true, but i do think the are using adaptive storage for this one.

lets see the outcry in 2 weeks ,when people install a gazillion apps and move every single one to shitty sd card, and complain that their phone goes sluggish.

naturally sony is the one to blame

  • Licaon_Kter

Get a FTF and be done already: https://xpericheck.com/device/D5803

here is a thing… next time buy a flagship device

  • Yes. Xperia Beta is a beta for the official android released, and the concept is a completely new software (based on Android of course)

  • Dominic81

Remember Sony? You released a Z5 last fall… and it’s still running on a not-so-secure 6.0 / February security patches build, and still has bluetooth issues… Get your fingers out of your ass please?

  • Dominic81

Sony doesn’t seem to give a shit anymore about the Z5.

  • razorg

Although I doubt Sony will read this, as this isn’t an official Sony channel, I certainly agree with all the things you’re saying man!

  • Dominic81

Yeah I know… I don’t expect them to make an exception for me just because I’m unhappy with how long it takes to update their flagship phones, but eh.. It feels good at least to realize I’m not the only one in that situation.

The worst part is… I like my Z5, but for God’s sake, keep it up to date Sony :|

Yeah, I love my Z5 Compact as well (after upgrading from a giant phablet Galaxy Note 2, this size is just perfect for me) but software-wise, I haven’t found what I was looking for to be honest…

  • Dominic81

To be fair, my user experience got better since I managed to unlock/root/debloat mine without losing my DRM keys (there’s a guide on XDA that explains how to backup/restore the TA partition after unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone, so you keep all the Sony features)

Battery life is better now (thanks to Amplify) and the phone feels snappier… but well, I still expected more fixes/updates from Sony. The latest firmware still has many issues waiting to be fixed

  • ramuk

But you had a Z3C right? I remember reading your comment on Phonearena. ( or maybe I’m mistaking you for someone else)

  • razorg

I’m not a root guy, so I expect whatever manufacturer I am using to give me the optimum level of optimisation, software features and security updates. Sony shouldn’t lay back and relax just because a lot of people have been kind of fixing their devices on their own (which it seems like they are relaxed about it…) :)

  • Roy van der Pijl

But as long as I only read of battery drain issues since lollipop and also on MM I stick to Kitkat on my z2.

Xperia M5 is a 400 euro smartphone and still Sony’s top mid range offering. Other OEMs are launching MM for <200 euro phones (see: Asus and Zenfone 2 Laser) and Sony can't release an initial official MM build. Deeply disappointing.

  • Matt

Well you should get an iPhone, nothing on Android market is 100% optimised.

Android is by nature will never ever be as optimised as an iPhone, never.

  • Matt

Still plastic build and not a high end.

Have you see how disgusting zen ui is? How extremely bloated they are?

Please tell me, did I ever mention iOS’ optimization level in my previous comment? Of course it’s a well known fact that due to Apple’s bespoke CPU architecture design and the fact that their ecosystem consists of a few phones, iOS is a MUCH better optimized mobile OS. However, this doesn’t mean that Android should be taken as a less expensive, spread upon a whole lot of manufacturers, alternative and no proper optimization should be expected from it! Of course, individual apps are built so they run on several versions of Android running on several kinds of SOCs, so being no-so-well-optimized is acceptable up to some degree. However, Sony’s take on Android is almost the same as the pure stock Android, and while it’s like this (saving lots of manpower by not implementing a custom UI) I expect a much better optimization from Sony in its builds as well as in the way how Sony’s own apps, built specifically for Xperia (and running only on Xperia) devices work with the Android itself. I admire iOS in this way, however as a person who used iOS before, for a year, I would never leave Android as I like the freedom it gives me and this doesn’t mean I would expect it to be unoptimized so please stop writing comments and creating a notion in the public like “Android will never be as optimized as iOS”. IT CAN BE AS GOOD, IF NOT BETTER! THE ONLY THING THOSE MONEY-PIT COMPANIES NEED TO DO IS TO HIRE MORE SOFTWARE ENGINEERS, and because of people like you keeping the expectations low, the pressure on them is really low so they gain LOTS without sacrificing anything and we end up with unoptimized Android builds!

  • Wolf0491

I think your best bet would be nexus if you are wanting latest version number and security patches quickly. When did moto release latest patches? just wondering

  • Wolf0491

If your rooted and flashed it with the D6633 patch. I have beta on mine

  • HAWX

    Well said, thx :)

  • Kwstakhs

Come on,everybody knows how to do this…and everybody knows the feeling is not the same bro!
But thank you for your time

  • Matt

woah, calm your tits man. No you did not mention that, but IOS will come to play if we are talking about optimized software .it is called vertical optimization , if one company fully control its hardware and software. while yes it is true that android will (theoretically) never be as optimized as IOS , but the thing is we have the hardware power to back that up.

besides, it is not that simple , more software engineers does not at all equal better software. If your eyes are keen enough xperias are one of the very best optimized software on the market (aside of nexuses). my z3 still can trade punches with new flagships. i mean do you even know what optimized means? please do tell me what that means in your planet.

HTC has the brilliant idea, if google dialler is better, cut your only dialler app and use googles , not only it will independently updated trough play store , it also looks better.

its not like im keeping my expectation low, if its low ill buy a moto g and call it a day, i will not buy a flagship grade device. I bought z3 when it was 600 EUR ++ , and i do have a certain expectation for the device.
I have my expectation in check, and look where it gets me, an extremely speedy MM build :D

  • razorg

Clearly you haven’t used a Z5 variant for a fair bit of time. All the optimizations and fixes are being done on Z3 family (it must be the company’s most used device right now so doing this stuff on Z3 and getting large quantities of feedback is crucial) but Z5 (and Z5 family) is the flagship here for crying out loud! Look, after iPhone 4S I went for a Galaxy Note 2 immediately after its release and stuck with it until last October (for 3 years that is). Then Samsung decided to cut the support at KitKat where in the end, almost as old Xperia Z got up to Lollipop 5.1.1 and that was the main reason I went for Sony this time. However, the device (Z5 Compact) is not as snappy as I expected a 3-years-younger flagship phone to be. And honestly, with each update it got better, I give you that one (which rules out bad hardware, and raises the question of how efficiently, effectively and fast Sony’s codes are working on this hardware -which answers your question on optimization I suppose- and I can tell you Z5’s are half a step behind Z3’s right now). However, these issues and fixes should have been, maybe most of them if not all, done before it was released commercially, this is what bugs me (or at least they should have been quick fixing them, it’s like they don’t want their latest device to sell to be honest)! Clearly, today’s financially struck Sony certainly doesn’t have the large man-power Samsung has got and I understand that. However, I am a customer and I expect the services other rivals are giving for the same amount of money, that is my right. It’s like they want all the Snapdragon 810 devices to be history soon. If that was the decision after the Z3+ disaster, they shouldn’t have released Z5 with the same chipset (where I deny Z5’s overheating problem, there is heating but it doesn’t lead to a problem/fault so that’s fine). Overall, Sony needs to start treating its flagships better, that’s my point!

  • Kwstakhs

    Well said…same for my Z3c

  • Primož Rojko

Thanks, still after day of trying I’m unable to unlock bootloader… Looks like I’m sticking with lollipop

Give us adoptable storage not app to sd.

  • Battel

Oh Sony mobile slow down your development we couldn’t catch on how many features you’re adding every hour :D

  • Matt

    Treating their flagship better?

Do z5 have android Marshmallow? Yes
    Do z5 have better hardware?
    Yes
Do z5 have unstable beta software on them? No
Do z5 have disastrous software problem that rendering the phone useless? No

As you said before, z3 is older and has (presumably) larger user Base tp test the software on, what is wrong in doing that? Sooner or later z5 will benefit from that rigorous software testing.

My suggestion is stop looking over to other people and enjoy the device that you bought with (also presumably) you hard earned money. Update will come soon enough. Save your laughs for us z3 user when our support ended.

  • Yes, the official MM start to rool to the Z5 series (Z5, Z5C, Z5P) on march 7th, and for Xperia Z3 Plus and Z4 Tablet on march 9th, along with the Z2, Z3 and Z3C. The Z3 Dual and Z2 Tablet and others variants of the Z2/Z3 get it on April 18. The problem is that it dependens on markets/regions/operators. For example, i´m from Portugal and i sittin didn´t recevide the update because my phone is unbranded (Vodafone PT already update to MM both 23.5.A.0.570 and 23.5.A.0.575).

The concept is, for what i´m understanding, is way that Sony found to experiment new stuff that probably one day, it will be on the Official released. For exemple, the double tap to sleep is something that was first introduced on the Concept Software, and it is now present on the Official Z2 and Z3 software (6.0.1) if i´m not mistaken. If not, now we have the Xperia Home Beta Program that have that funcionality to test if you are a beta user).

  • PoweredBySony

    Still no 6.0.1 for z5
Still no root for the z5 (don’t want to unlock the bl)
Still no custom roms for z5

Maybe it is complicated, Google doesn’t offer the feature of checking the sd card class and speed, maybe writing the code for that isn’t worth it. I do get your point, and it would be awesome if they offered the feature, but atm it isn’t available on either the Galaxy S7 nor the LG G5 (don’t know about the HTC 10)

  • vgs21

Exactly my case(first and last Sony phone) but along with bluetooth, I have got many other issues too in MM update on my Z5DP like screen mirroring produces distorted video on tv, dual ring tone missing(Can’t keep separate ringtone for my dual sim), wifi gets disconnected when phone is in sleep mode(all settings are perfect), camera is sht, can’t use different modes with full resolution, phone becomes so hot that once i used it to dry my handkerchief which was wet due to sweat, many more are there but I’m tired of writing them again and again. And the worst part is, it’s been almost 3 months since MM update and yet no further updates to fix those bugs and shortcomings. I hate you Sony. Spent my hard earned 59900 INR ($920) on this phone and this is what you give me.

  • Nick Marchini

just updated and now cannot open any apps on SD card, great testing Sony

but you’ll only have the features back after you relock the bootloader, simply making a backup doesn’t mean the features will remain in your device while it’s unlock
