Sony F833X images leak – new design, dual-LED flash, USB Type-C

by XB on 18th July 2016

in Rumours, Xperia X series

Sony F8331 rumourNew images have leaked of what is purported to be the Sony F833X handset. Model numbers F8331 and F8332 were revealed recently, that were shown to have specifications very similar to the Xperia X Performance. The leaked pictures from GSM Arena reveal a few more details including the fact that this will be the first Sony Xperia handset to sport a dual-LED flash and a USB Type-C port for charging.

The design of the new phone has been changed too, and interestingly, is very similar to the ‘tube’ concept that was leaked in April 2015. The design features curved sides and a flat top & bottom. The front looks very similar to current Xperia phones with front-facing stereo speakers. So, what do you think of the new design? Is Sony on the right track? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

Dual flash dual camera dual sim dual dual fc*k dual

  • Mak Cau Theng

I still don’t get that why still got many people complain about the huge bezel from top and bottom.
    That’s because of front-facing speakers!

If want small bezel, it will changed the speakers location to bottom like iPhone!
For me I am still prefer front-facing speakers.

  • Don Bart

    Serbia ROM

  • Nico P. Lumaniog

NFC SENSOR…. AGAIN SONY?! : Btw, the design reminds me of a Nokia Lumia, slighty rounded on its sides

  • I dont like this design

  • Rayson275 Kar Weng

    I still prefer XA design…

  • i like/dislike this design the front glass is awful it’s like a lumia now, but i like the color, and stupid speakercuts make a return nope not going to go with this, guess z5 series was my last sony phone, atleast for now.

  • Froyo Radeon

    Looks like xiami 3

  • and whats up with that weird thing at the bottom on the back

  • You always forget that this model is capple of recording 4K on BOTH cameras!

  • Kariko

    Stereospeaker ftw

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

    Wow, I like that

  • I have to say this one has more of a classic sony feel and i like that, the color the shape and the metal back i like those, just get rid of that lumia front and the speaker cuts and the weird thing at the bottom of the back and i may be interested.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I don’t like the stereo speaker position at it front (I prefer Z5 position) but I don’t really have problem with it.

Now I’m thinking the thing that close to dual led flash is probably a Laser autofocus sensor.

I’m eager to see another two model also :)

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Don’t mind it. It’s just for Japanese model.

  • BraviaX

    Hope camera has OIS

  • KarFar

I think the phone is bigger than 5.1″ maybe 5.5?

  • Vanja

This is in Serbia. First time something interesting on Balkan :)

  • Toni_Ai

its probably c6 or something like that))) looks like lumia(

  • KarFar

this is not appearing on the home page, only via link.

  • Zen

Front Facing speaker is a weak argument

    Look at the Nexus 6P

  • I don’t like this design
    I don’t like this design
    2x
    I don’t like this design!

  • Matt

    6p has huge bezel everywhere

  • Matt

for people who wanted a new design , hahaha there you go

  • DBS

Again, a phone that’s just too big. THAT SAID:

1 – I’m VERY glad to see PROPER flashes on Sony phones. Those pathetic single LED ones that have been used so far are way outdated.

2 – Given how thick the phone is I HOPE the bloody thing finally adds OIS.

3 – The colour looks great.

4 – I just hope Sony’s software is totally revamped. It’s been going downhill since KitKat. The theme engine is a joke and the camera software…don’t even get me started on the camera software (camera2api still locked, “manual mode” that’s a joke etc).

  • DBS

Because it makes the phone even bigger and literally impossible to use with one hand.

  • DBS

I’d like to think that that bottom part is metal and until there it’s glass to accommodate the long overdue Qi wireless charging support.

  • DBS

Well, if they’re going to copy someone, they might as well copy from the best.
Here’s to hoping they also copied Nokia’s imaging software…’cause Sony phones desperately need great cameras to compete with the Samsungs and LGs.

  • LiterofCola

    it’s hideous

  • jokensy

This new design really really really SUCKS…BIG BALLS!!!

  • Yufeng Liao

I don’t design too look so messy

  • goldenblls

    I like the new design.

  • Prateek Bhanushali

    Modular design ?

  • lack of idea..it’s just like sony powerbank design :(

  • Hassan Alghar

NFC in the front next to the camera. Why?

  • RockStar2005

The X series all have NFC on the front too already.

  • NICLAS

Awesome design :-) but seems big to be only 5.2″ :-P

  • A mí no me pagan por opinar

Speakers seem to be too narrow for that huge bezels. I’d not be picky about that because I’ve got kind of big hands (I handle my Xperia Z1 with no problem), but on that space could be fitted physical hardware nav buttons. But that’s just my opinion.

  • RockStar2005

    It’s only 5.1″ per specs.

Any word on the battery size?? Haven’t heard about that yet.

I like the design of my graphite black XP more, so I doubt I will upgrade to this.

  • hansip

Well, if this body brings at least 3600mah battery than bring it on!

  • A mí no me pagan por opinar

Agree on pretty much everything. Very much about OIS. Not too much about Sony software, because if I ever had one of them I’d root it to install a new ROM, anyway (:

The thing that seems really, REALLY stupid, if the rumors are even true, is NFC sensor at the front of the phone.

  • RockStar2005

I’d like to know the battery size. No word on that yet.

  • DarkMaster

this one is awesome to , the only thing I don’t like is that panel at the bottom on the back …. and color this one in particular sucks LOL

  • I thought After crappy X series, SOny would go for a big one. Disappointing Design

  • DarkMaster

    and it’s 5.7 inches LOL

  • DarkMaster

imaging from Sony is the best , it’s just you who doesn’t like the results .

  • nick

if only they launch it in India. this seems to bring some freshness to Xperia.

  • Ben Leung

    It is 5.2″.
Physically 5.15″, marketing brand as 5.2″, GFXBench recognize as 5.1″.

  • DarkMaster

panel at the bottom is for antenna , that means that the rest of the phone is probably completely metal .

  • Ben Leung

Possible around 2900mAh, same as Z5/Z3+. Or even smaller.
If sony make the PCB more compact, maybe we can see more than 3000mAh.

  • RockStar2005

Yeah I was going off GFX.

Ok 5.2″ then. How do you know they will market it as 5.2″ though? Where did you see that?

  • Inderpreet Matharu

    Beautiful. Want one right away.

  • dragonsneeze

http://www.static.xperiablog.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Xperia-Tube_1-640×454.png looks like this one. I like the front, the flat bottom will hurt cotton hands back is Ok

  • DarkMaster

    I don’t :)

  • ryq24

Sony should watch the review of android authority on Xperia X performance and they will know NFC should not be place in front like what they did with this alleged phone. Sony should replace all their phone designers and hire the people at huawei or one plus. Also, like all Sony phones this will be over price!, again,

  • Kliment Stamenkov

Looks like Sony and Nokia (Microsoft) had a baby. I don’t really like it.

  • DBS

No one who knows anything about photography likes the results produced by Xperia phones.

  • LJLG

I hope this will be worthy of an upgrade from my Z2

  • DarkMaster

all you are bitching about is some little noise on the photos , anybody who knows anything about photography likes the results produced by Xperia phones including DxOMark. PERIOD.

  • Thariq Mohammed
  • I miss the Xperia Z design :(

  • DBS

LOL You just lost your argument by mentioning DxOMark, the guys who say the best is the one who pays them to say it’s the best.

It’s not just noise (which isn’t “some little” at all). It’s useless HDR, it’s incapability of dealing with different exposures, it’s focus problems, it’s stabilisation problems, it’s washed out colours, it’s crap low light etc etc etc.
You just know nothing about photography. PERIOD.

  • YuuriAyano

The top and bottom bezels are quite concerning.

  • DarkMaster

washed out !? you mean not over-saturated colors like on Samsung and iPhones ?HDR is good -don’t know what you are talking about , crap lowlight – are you living on the under the rock ? it’s got awesome lowlight performance ! and by bashing DxOMark you just lost this argument .

  • shenoy

    +1

  • Timel

Its back isn’t beautiful at all , especially the buttom , and the right and left bezels still big, WE WANT flagship phone with SMALL BEZELS as Xperia XA please Sony!!!

And overall the phone looks pretty thick but who knows It may come up with crazy big battery, real BIOZ image processor and hi-fi audio chip buit-in?

  • DBS

No, I mean washed out as in everything looks the same colour.
HDR is good? LOL. You don’t know what HDR means then.
No I’m not living under a rock, which is why I know low light is crap on Sony phones (helped a lot by the stubbornness in not adding OIS).

And by pointing out the truth about DxOMark, a truth which isn’t convenient to you, I just exposed you as a blind fanboy without the ability for critical thinking ;)

  • shenoy

I guess, it’s a mid ranger again. Not a flagship

  • Timel

    me too

  • Ana Heluši?

Love it, it looks great, Sony FTW!

  • Da Fuq

Well, at least they’re trying something different…

  • Mustafa Sezer

I liked new design, indeed it iz beautiful :3

  • joe

i think you are a blind hater

  • Timel

to be honest , Sony’s font facing speakers is very lame, not just a lame sound quality but the sound is very low

Sony’s front facing speakers is just another horrible thing happened to Sony smartphones and sony must improve it

  • DBS

    Sure, whatever kid.

  • Nikola Maruni?

I ja se pitam kako je tamo zapalo?!

  • Nafnaf84

And yet too much bezels at the top and the bottom… WHY SONY?

  • DarkMaster

I said good not perfect , yes you do Xperia has no match in lowlight and OIS is not everything ,.

I have a lot of critical thinking , I criticize 70% of those shitty amateur reviewers on YT. among the first are androidauthority , suspersuf , phonearena etc…

DxOMark is only credible camera tester and when they say that Xperia is the best then it is , when they say that for any other phone it’s also true .

  • DarkMaster

it’s just Serbian language , doesn’t mean that is actually in Serbia .

  • Timel

And Z2 can’t come close to arc Design

I Hoppe Sony will come back to their arc Design again but with bezel-less
    http://cdn.ttgtmedia.com/rms/computerweekly/photogalleries/245532/2917_20_sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-design-and-screen.jpg

  • DarkMaster

nope , the quality of sound is excellent and probably the clarity is best of any phone but volume is low . still awesome .

  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

The top and bottom will hurt hands, I know from Windows Phone experience. This might put some people off from Sony phones for good.

  • Nikola Maruni?
  • Timel

    I totally agree with 4

  • DBS

LOL You’re delusional, mate. ABSOLUTELY delusional.

“Xperia has no match in lowlight”
Indeed. Everyone else is better. The G4/G5, the S6 and S7, the Nexus 6P…all of them are miles better than any Xperia (Z5 or X line).

    “OIS is not everything”
Indeed it’s not, but it’s an ESSENTIAL part of a camera, specially in low light where the shutter has to stay open for longer.

“I have a lot of critical thinking , I criticize 70% of those shitty amateur reviewers on YT.”

Criticising people isn’t having critical thinking. Critical thinking is taking EVERYONE’s opinion into consideration, trying it yourself and coming to your own conclusion. Something I am ABSOLUTELY sure you never did for any Xperia camera.
If you want to criticise established reviewers (who get invited to press conferences by Sony…unlike you) like Android Authority, PhoneArena etc, then put up your own YouTube channel and prove everyone wrong by showing your own tests.

“DxOMark is only credible camera tester and when they say that Xperia is the best then it is , when they say that for any other phone it’s also true”

It’s exactly the opposite. They’re the most unreliable ones around. Time and again their “testings” and “results” have been questioned and they never ever explained how they got those results. And as anyone who actually understands critical thinking and real analysis, for you to present something as “results” you MUST provide the method you used to reach your results so that others can replicate them. If you’re speaking the truth, the person replicating the tests will get the same result as you.
DxOMark, of course, doesn’t do that because it would show that their results are influence by those who paid them and not my real performance.

  • DeaDNeoN

It’s in Bulgaria, but the phone is in the Serbian language. Balkans FTW! :D

  • jokensy

IF ONLY THIS WAS JUST A HOAX…

  • DarkMaster

no use talking sense to you …bc you try to present your own opinions as the facts …

if I didn’t take those in consideration why then I watched those ? it’s they who proved to be unreliable and biased towards those who buys most ads space on their web sites and to those who sponsor them with free stuff (various equipment and test units) .

your critics of DxOMarks makes no sense , there is no way for them to receive bigger amounts of money from such big companies in secret otherwise they would be exposed .

  • Saeed

Please enter the market too early to have a good sales.

  • jokensy

WHY THE F*CK DOES IT LOOK LIKE A NOKIA LUMIA 920!?

  • DBS

My opinions ARE facts from the moment I actually tried the devices and saw the results myself. Even more so when EVERY. SINGLE. OTHER. REVIEW. came to the same conclusions.

“your critics of DxOMarks makes no sense , there is no way for them to receive bigger amounts of money from such big companies in secret otherwise they would be exposed .”

You have absolutely NO idea how business works, clearly. Or you’re just incredibly naïve.

  • Timel

yes the bottom on the back is ugly, I prefer the back like X performance

  • EQ

Quite good Z1-2 esque design which are some of the best mobilephone designs ever.

  • josesl16

    Looks amazing, gorgeous.
Though the only thing that would save Sony Mobile, at this point, is a much better camera software(waay overdue Sony) and a MUCH MUCH lower pricing. Price this at $500, maybe $450 or even lower, and the market will maybe start to consider it again.

The dual-LED is probably a step in the right direction though.

  • Timel

I want Sony to come back to their futuristic arc curve with bezel-less design

  • EQ

Z1 and Z2 are legendary phones in all aspects. Yet to this date they outdo competition like S7 in pretty much all areas bar SoC.

  • Moe Sat

I like it’s design. Sony is still smart.
I hope to include ois technology and raw support in camera [But sony ever destroy my dream] :-( . Whatever, Dual flash and usb type C is one of the good change and I wanna know the thing (may be one sensor) above the flash light.

  • EQ
  • DarkMaster

”My opinions ARE facts from the moment I actually tried the devices and saw the results myself ” – no comment on that …. LOL

I don’t need any idea because I KNOW how the business works and I explained it to you in the comment above , the one who is naive is you .

  • Not gonna happen, I think. If it can received Qi signal then I see no point of them moving NFC to the front

  • jamie evans

Huge bezels on the top and bottom bother me a lot

  • Haiodao

    Sony still sell cellphone?

  • That’s not possible because they need to inclide a fingerprint sensor on flagship phones otherwise people wil go on riots :P
And you know, fingerprint sensor needs some spaces so….

  • Battel

They can’t make small bezel because of the camera sensors & lens,
I don’t like this design much but at least Sony got out of that stupid Box .

  • Shamoy Rahman

How do you know what the PCB size is? Where is your information source? I’m curious :3

  • Shamoy Rahman

No, Xperia digital stabilization beats OIS unless Sony makes a better OIS module than everyone else.

  • Shamoy Rahman

I don’t entirely like this design either, especially the flat bottom and top but the specs are much more promising.

  • Battel

Now sumsum will gone crazy and order 10 phones have same design and name and specs of this device .

  • Shamoy Rahman

ARC design was the best, Z2 had some great elements too. They should put the best of all phone designs into an Xperia flagship.

  • DBS

    Kid, you’re pathetic.
Go get a job, get a way to actually be able to afford more than one phone, buy them, test them and then you can come back here to make your act of contrition for being absolutely wrong.

And no, you have absolutely no idea how business works. Every big company has a marketing budget and paying off DxOMark to say their camera is the best can be included in the accounts as marketing expenses.
Seriously, just…stop. You’re just embarrassing yourself with your ignorance and unwillingness to learn.

  • DBS

The NFC chip is independent from the Qi coil. The contacts aren’t the same, they are independent of one another.

  • Aldi Wan Kenobi

I hope Sony would release a “compact” version. :-)

  • jmaxim917

Any idea what the screen size is?

  • jmaxim917

Funny u should say that. I think it looks a lot like the Z1, very retro.

  • azzido

I agree the back should be one piece of Frosted glass just like in Z5, why there are 2 pieces of back cover? This looks ugly :(

  • jmaxim917

WTH is that lid on bottom at the back? These are the kids on silly designs that would make me not buy it.

  • Bashar Shehab

Can’t they make the bezels a bit bigger?

  • EQ

It does and I really like it except the back which is not a single plain surface, the edges around the bezel and the power button. It kinda lacks the elegant glas/metallic deluxe clean look but neverthless quite nice.

  • azzido

Except back “strip?” or anything that looks ugly, it is not a revolution everyone expected but honestly as Z5 user I prefer more this design than X series as it is less rounded.

So please give us the back of regular Z5! Just pure flat without any annoying separate elements.
The device looks quite big and thick, so I am fine with it as only this place was used for huge, over 4000mAh battery and great camera. Sony finally needs to deliver a device with:

    1. Great, very bright display with new technologies to draw attention (4K + HDR and 120Hz would be nice)
    2. Best camera that outperforms the competition and 4K video for GOD’s sake
    3. Impressive battery life
    4. Sound improvements, hence dedicated S-Master amplifier and Mega Bass that people want
    5. Keep waterproof, premium materials only, latest hardware including 4-6GB of RAM and fast internal memory.
    7. New fresh and fast UI + redesigned, better camera software that all users are moaning for (iso and other options adjustable in higher resolutions, manual mode, shutter speed, RAW, 4K recording in 60fps etc.)
    6. Finally present Sony and Xperia logos on your devices, I do not know why Xperia inscription on the back is so muter that is hardly visible, Sony behave like being ashamed of their names and brands. Do not know why. If device is black, SONY brand should be white or silver and opposite. That everyone can see it. Graving on Z5 wwas step in good direction.

    + marketing Sony.
No matter how the device will be good, it will not sell without advertising.
See Shamesung and Srapple for example.

Sony needs to choose if they are ggoing to be back to the game or prefer to be dieing slowly like HTC.

  • DanielGearSolid

ewww, too round for my tastes

  • KIMI

I’m having great variety of mixed feelings when it comes to the new design. Looks like a lumia, not bad but nothing special, I would have greatly preferred if they had gone with concept Y design instead of tube…

Edit: not trying to be those bezel-whores aren’t they a bit tad large, X was reasonable but this felt large when viewed from rear the phone looks extremely long..

  • azzido

Agree, just a combination of Arc and omni-balance style of Z3/Z5 would be perfect!

  • zip

This thing looks horrible. Keep the Z/X design. Don’t fix what ain’t broke.

  • azzido

Is this a competition to Galaxy Note and final replacement to Xperia Ultra?
The only problem I have with Z5 / Z2 speakers is that holes are so thin I am unable to clean the dust in it :(

  • Dexter Moregan

I prefer a better battery management than a bigger capacity of battery

  • azzido

it may be muted due to waterproof construction, still sounds quite good, however agree it could be better.

  • Talos the Robot

It is likely to happen because the XA Ultra already has OIS in its front facing camera.

  • Dexter Moregan

the bottom of that phone remind me Nokia Lumia but when it’s with other parts of the phone, the design is more gorgeous and modern than Nokia Lumia

  • RockStar2005

    ROFL!

    Simple A$$ Jack!

  • Talos the Robot

I want this in a compact form to replace my Z3c.

  • KIMI

They went from stupid box to moronic box, it’s ugly now..

  • azzido

everything except this metal back that keeps me off from buying any phone. Frosted glass back is still the best!

  • KIMI

    You’re not alone ;_;

  • Mac

Exactly what I was about to say!

  • zip

In other news, a new version of Sony’s Concept firmware has been released https://plus.google.com/100850217438991542866/posts/DMWz7pR1uGg

  • azzido

I do not like the blue / purple hue on the pics taken at night (without LED or any film being used). This iis horrible issue of Xperia phones :(
and blurry corners as the camera is too wide angle :/

  • azzido

yes, they need to improve HDR as it seems it does nothing now.
I miss a good HDR effect.

  • Mac

Now make a Compact version of this one with bugfree bt, 4.6-4.8inch, 720p, BIG battery, real stamina, small apps! Don’t remove all the nice Sony features..

I was thinking about getting my Z3C upgraded to X performance but since the batterylife sucks and there are not even small apps anymore, I think I pass, sadly. Really need a new phone now :-(

  • shenoy

The prob is SONY had stopped doing mobiles like SE ERA…

  • Talos the Robot

Because it makes electronics and not washing machines and vacuum cleaners.

  • azzido

I may consider upgrading my Z5 if they will finally deliver the above + better sound and Mega Bass is a must ehh.
+ add the best headphones to the box…

  • azzido

    Is this Z6? :) :) :)
    Hurray!

  • Vinicius Araujo

Near the dual LED flash, there’s a empty space. Does it have laser autofocus?

  • Timel

then Sony should embedded fingerprint sensors into the display as Sony’s patent
    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-17490629

  • Tochi Nwodu

if u were given full access to manual mode what really would u do? always whinning

  • DBS

Very simple you ignorant fanboy: if you had access to full manual you could at least minimise the absence of OIS by playing around with the aperture, the ISO values and the shutter speed (for example, choose an higher ISO value and a quicker shutter speed). You could also solve the noise problem by doing the opposite: picking up a lower ISO value and increase the duration of the shutter speed. In this case, the lack of OIS would be a problem but since you currently have to put the phone on a tripod or held to something to shoot anything non-blurred in low light anyway, at least that trouble would yield a far better photo than what the cameras on Xperia phones produce currently.

Do yourself a favour…go learn something before replying to someone.

  • Fempter

    Ugly as fuuuuck……

  • Kristijan Kaši?

    It’s on Croatian! haha

  • jmaxim917

I rather like it too, however, the lid on the back is somewhat off putting. Could there be some reason why it’s there, maybe for Sim and SD cards. That would mean no flaps on the sides.

  • jamie evans

Huge bezels on the top and bottom bother me a lot

  • azzido

BTW Nokia is going back to the party with 2 new strong over 5″ flagship devices :P

  • azzido

I do not like the new icons, especially the e-mail one, how can we get back to old ones? :(

  • Dominik Engelmann

And again those huge bezels on top and on bottom… Are they really necessary? Even on the side there are bezels. Hoped that Sony could mess up with Ulefone Futures design (like XA but with side fingerprint sensor). Beside that its really a fresh design ad I like it. Looks a bit like the Nextbit Robin. With some nixe specs and maybe one or two new features it could be a winner for me. Also it would be nice to see wireless charging integrated :).

  • KarFar

Am I the only one who noticed something odd on the 4th pic? the right side of the power button/fingerprint scanner is weird.

  • HAWX

Sides looks they have better ergonomics but edges looks quite sharp like Z5 :/ I’m not really amazed by the design like in the Z2 and Z3 times but change is always good imo. I hope Sony price it agresively and see success.

  • Omarion07

Yeah the chairs and the street definitely look like Serbia!!

  • Vuyo Ncube

Please please please please please please please please please please please please make a phablet version of this. And for the love of God, make that 120Hz HDR display come true with high accuracy, cut down on camera pixels and bring OIS already. Sony’s best new smartphone is the E5 and it’s sad to watch!

  • Tochi Nwodu

sorry if i broke your heart…lol sony isnt listerning to u (its been how many years now?) are u a vampire who walks at night? you’d better wake up …if u need perfection in your night shots, simply get a dslr
no matter how tech is grown mobile phone camera would only remain point and shoot

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

The tube design remind me of sony xperia arco s.

  • DBS

LOL Breaking my heart? You’d have to be a beautiful white blonde girl to be able to do that, mate ;)

    “sony isnt listerning to u”
No, they’re not. Which pretty much explains why the mobile division has been losing money for years.

“are u a vampire who walks at night?”
No. I go out at night with my friends. Friends. You should try to get some of those ;)

“if u need perfection in your night shots”
I don’t need perfection in my night shots. I need them, however, to not be utter rubbish to the point of not being worth trying to take a photo. And here’s another newsflash: DSLRs are more and more professional-only cameras (and I do own one but I obviously don’t take it with me when I’m going out to dinner with friends).
Point and Shoot cameras are dying. Smartphone cameras are more and more the new PaS cameras. Everyone else has realised it…except Sony, apparently.

  • Tochi Nwodu

mmmmm now your context sounds cool…no hating
i know sony is missing up big time..its awful
    n the new devices,,,,,,,, hmmmm
i am sincerely not impressed i’ll be sticking with z5 for awhile longer

  • ludimilojko

I know that we all differ, but to me, this would be good. In 2011. Today, not so much. I don’t think this will be THE new Xperia. If it will, i’m sure i won’t pay for this.

  • (NinJer)

I really like the design, except for the bottom of the back side, why the line?

  • Great Dude

I hope they added the fm radio with water proofing together this time, also no 3GB but more .
    And the look seems beautiful.

  • (NinJer)

They’ve already stated why the have those bezels, the front facing speakers and housing all the tech.

TBH i’d rather have these bezel so i can hold the phone and enjoy content than block some content with thinner bezels, and if you look at the other tech giant SHARP, their smart phones with thin bezels have insanely large chins, i’d rather symmetrical bezels.

  • Omarion07

Ok.. the new design, dual flash, and return of 4k recording are all a welcome! But i still think Sony are going to stick to sd820, 3gb ram, small battery, and lack of OIS. This will lead to the phone being another flop for Sony!!

  • FYLegend21

True but it’s to keep up the 6-month carrier cycle in Japan and not everyone there cares about specs – some just care about aesthetics. Remember the Z3 had only SD800 when 805 was being launched and not much changes otherwise, and it became more popular than the Z2.

  • DarkMaster

and price it below $300 , right ? sorry but ain’t gonna happen !

  • DarkMaster

    Z3 had SD801 .

  • DarkMaster

Serbian , there is cyrillic .

  • Alvin

Yup. Huge bezels, new design, just what everyone wants.

  • Timel

Actually I’m okay with top and bottom bezels of Sony phones even but right and left bezels are too huge

  • Michael Kelly

Nfc on front? How stupid is that? When you connect, you usually have to tap the display to confirm. So that’s the dumbest position ever!

  • (NinJer)

What if I told you that not everyone carries their DSLRs everywhere, and sometimes they want to take a photo at night with their smartphone which is located most likely in their pocket.

  • Raphael

Great design and color. More futuristic than Y and Mono designs. A change for real.

  • (NinJer)

Its cause they don’t want antenna lines on the back, seems to be full metal, NFC can’t go through metal unless it has ugly antenna lines :(.

They should have a Cutout Sony Logo on the back as a NFC antenna hole! Like how they have a cutout for the shiny apple logo on iphones.

  • (NinJer)

You don’t like front facing waterproof speakers?

  • (NinJer)

No because the Z line is discontinued, the model number is F833X, X… Hint Hint

  • (NinJer)

Sure, if you want larger louder waterproof speakers.

  • (NinJer)

Yea, I love the front facing waterproof speakers. A must have on any Japanese waterproof smartphone

  • Timel

    Hey DBS

the reasons that cameras on Z series and X Performance cant beat rivals because Sony phones dont have OIS ? or low quality lens or because the horrible post-processing image ?

    check this out

  • (NinJer)

They probably can’t this isn’t a copy paste design, meaning it took more manhours to RND and design, therefore it will most likely be more expansive than the current series.
It’s the x performance and Z series phones that have been overpriced heavily for copy pasting.

  • (NinJer)

I hope so too, but it doesn’t look like it spec wise atm, since it’s still following close behind the X Performance.

  • (NinJer)

Because they have a full metal back with no antenna lines. They really need to make the Sony logo and Xpeira logo larger so they can make a cutout on the back for the antenna. instead of lines.

  • (NinJer)

    C6 with X performance specs?

  • (NinJer)

    Capple.

  • (NinJer)

Oh poor little baby did a boo boo, princess hands are hurting. awwwwwwwwwww.

  • (NinJer)

Fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone which I love, I don’t like the fingerprint sensor on the front of the phone, or the back, that is the sacrifice that has to be made for having it on the side of the handset.

  • FYLegend21

Sorry I meant 801, but the Z2 did too!

  • Bashar Shehab

The Z3 was better than HTC M8 in terms of audio quality and yet it didn’t have that much big bezels

  • EQ
  • EQ
  • Denis Dardymov

    “New” design from Lumia.
X performance is the most beautiful Sony phone ever!

  • (NinJer)

As in the Z3 doesn’t have huge bezels or the HTC? Cause if i’m not mistaken, HTC ones are HUMONGOUS for not being waterproof, including the black HTC bar at the bottom.

  • DBS

Video is quite different from photography though. Sony has their SteadyShot on the Xperia Z line (and I’d assume the X too but they didn’t mention anything). SteadyShot, however, only works for video.

So when it comes to photography, it’s a combination of everything. Lack of OIS and terrible post-processing.

The hardware itself (the lenses and the sensor) is actually pretty good. But it doesn’t work on its own. It needs additional hardware (an OIS system) and it needs good software to take advantage of it. You buying a 4K TV but then only play DVDs in it. It will work, but you’re wasting the TV hardware by only playing SD films.

  • Alvin

Their design has always been beautiful. But this one is just a different type of beautiful that is refreshing :D

  • Khush

Hopefully they move to QHD screen. Hate Sony’s idea of 6 month upgrades with very incremental changes to hardware and design. That said i love the midnight blueish colour on the concept

  • F.

So my eyes are fine then lol. I thought the sun gave it a different color. I’ve been waiting on a navy blue phone for a while. I would definitely get this phone.

  • Chi Wai Shum

The NFC logo on the front is annoying.

  • DarkMaster

correct , but back then no-one was complaining that S5 had 1GB less RAM than Z2 but now it’s like the end of the world bc xperia is missing that 1GB while actually it has more due to FHD screen ,

  • Bashar Shehab

    I’m not talking about HTC’s bezels -_-

  • DarkMaster

I guess even the edges are too sharp and rough so you might get scratched or cut by the phone :D

  • illstplaya .

I like that wallpaper in the first picture. Where can I download that

  • illstplaya .

The software isn’t sony’s fault. Blame Google for that. Every phone had problems on lollipop and even marshmallow didn’t fix some problems introduced in lollipop

  • DBS

The software is most definitely Sony’s fault. First the camera software isn’t provided by Google. Sony doesn’t use the Google default camera software (which is a shame considering Sony’s much worse).

As for Android itself, it’s an open source OS. Meaning Sony *can* make changes to it and fix what Google doesn’t fix. Sony however is doing less and less on that area and offering almost stock Android… And with it, all of stock Android’s shortcomings.

  • FYLegend21

The S5 had only FHD as well though. Back then people were saying how the Z2 would totally destroy the S5, but poor marketing and no release in US were the undoing. Z3 wasn’t released in the US either but it was in Canada and on several carriers. Now they’re back to being a Bell exclusive here…

Well, power users would argue you can never have enough RAM – OnePlus 3 and some other phones have 6GB (even though you can’t use all of it).

  • Vinny Conforto

Dual-LED flash and USB type-C are great. But I don’t like the design. Trim those huge bezels.

  • Vinny Conforto

The design of Z3 Compact is the best.

  • Svnjay

Sorry but these phones are ugly as duck.

  • Svnjay

    I prefer the Xperia Play.

  • Svnjay

    Jesus of Surburbia!

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Seriously. After I upgraded to LP I felt like sh*t. KitKat was the best of all.(even camera was great on KK)

Camera was great on KK and the manual option had much options than Camera 2.0, I hope with this phone they’ll open up their eyes and see that they clearly need to give the consumer Proper Camera2Api with new look to the camera (fingers-crossed, Like it’s gonna happen in next few months :P). Hopefully OIS and EIS both are added

Then Like you said I am really happy with that they’re trying two LEDs and they’re going with laser auto focus which is goooood.

Looking at the size I think they are going to have a bigger battery since they made a terrible choice by reducing the battery capacity.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Yea Honestly they’re not listening. Only PlayStation and Sony Alpha teams listen to the consumer and the reviewers. Cause before I bought my a7Rii I did a research and I saw in one of the youtube videos how Sony listened to the Consumer and how they absolutely changed the mirror-less game. a7Rii simply amazing, Because of that reason I don’t even pick up my Z3 to take pics cause Z3 is that terrible to take pics, even with new cameraUI it’s just rubbish.

And look at PS4. They just simply listened to what those game creators want and what the players(gamer) want and they outsold the Xbox One without a competition. why they listened.

So I hope even the mobile division will listen too.
Giving OIS and CameraApi2 won’t hurt their DSLR or Mirror-less systems or their digital cameras. Smartphones are very successful business if they’re listening and that’s what Samsung’s been doing and look at them they’re successful.

    HOPE THEY’LL LISTEN SOON.

  • xAntifreeZe

Does the random line at the back of the phone serve any new functionality(2nd pic)? At first glance I thought it is gonna be “modular-ish” but seeing the front of the phone in other pics dismissed my idea…

  • xAntifreeZe

Anyone still rmb their Y concept? I still prefer that to the tube :(

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    1) Okay I am hopeful regarding this phone. Yet design is still not eye candy.
But It’s good that they’re going with a new design but they could have gone with rounded edges like they went with Xperia X.
    2) Phone looks thicker which means we might get a bigger battery and proper heating management. (If that so I am definitely getting.)
    A HUGE BATTERY IS A MUST. :D
    3) Since they’re using two flashes and I think they’re trying laser auto-focus too?? To make the auto-focus fast? Hopefully they’ll go with CameraApi2 this time so we get to use proper-manual settings.
    4) Oh that terrible NFC placement. Seriously who came up with that idea? After tapping with other phone or device you have to touch the screen and each and every time when you’re gonna do that it’s gonna fail. Why can’t they make the Xperia LOGO plastic and place the NFC there??? One Plus 3 does it and few other manufactures do too.

  • kaostheory

    Antenna

  • razor7s

Lumia: Hey fuck you copy my concept design

  • razor7s

    Timel your taste was disgusting

  • Enzo

What the fuck?! The design sucks.
When can I replace my Z2 with a elegantly-designed new one?!
If this is the next flagship, well, SONY will disappoint me for the third time.

  • hansip

Xperia X is for you then.

  • ymytbb .

The display looks 5.5″ to me, obviously much bigger than 5.1″. Most importantly, Xperia has to the battery king, not the bezel king… What’s the battery’s capacity?

  • Vincentius Phang

With a body that fat it better have a mega battery and somewhat better waterproof-ness. and I generally don’t really mind bezel, but the top and bottom bezel is too much. then comes the price….

  • Vincentius Phang

this one is like Meghan Trainor, fat.. but beautiful… but still fat.

  • razorg

HTC puts the NFC at the back although it’s devices has had full metal bodies for the last couple of years…

  • betatesterz

Why does that design reminds me of a Lumia… lol

  • Vincentius Phang

    what about Samsung S7 ?

  • Alex Norris

    Looks like Nokia LUMIA )))

And of course, a huge indentation on top and bottom. Sony still can not understand that progress has long stepped forward, but they still are in 2013 year..

  • (NinJer)

S7 back is not metal, it’s glass.

  • (NinJer)

HTC NFC location is displayed on the picture below, https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c3e38ce3258e0abcdb912fcdebddd3f4e5736ceafee2ece00ebcbf78503d7e0f.png it has plastic cutouts for the antenna around the camera and the line.

  • I usually do not taunt sony fans anymore, they are endangered species after all but really… 2012 Blackberry designers called, they want their phone back :-D

  • Vincentius Phang

    k thx for clarifying

  • KIMI

Haha I’m choking right now, but through what eyes do you call that excellent looking.

  • Sridu

Big Let down. This ain’t any flagship its just a SUNKEN SHIP. Sony will be remembered in history as the company which kept ignoring its strength and moved ahead with mediocre ideas. Want to move from my ZR and I have no impressive phone to buy. Each phone has something missing in it. I don’t want my 8th phone to be a non-sony phone but I’m depressed at the way things are going. Personally I feel Xperia XA looks better than this.
M/y piece of advice for SONY.
Take the Xperia XA as the new Standard,
    Knock of the bottom bezel,
Try reducing the top bezel to the extent possible,
Add front Flash to all Flagship phones,
Bring back the sound quality of W800 series,
    Water Resistance,
Removable back cover(like ZR), I love ZR.
For God sake lay off your pricing team. They aren’t worth few pennies :)

  • Ben Leung

    Just my estimate…
Go take a look the disassembly photos of Z3/Z3+/Z5/X

  • webuser.my

I found the speakers on the Z3 the best sounding of the lot. Loud and decent with not much distortion. I’ve owned the Z2, Z3+ and am currently using a Z5P to compare to.

One thing the Z2, Z3+ and Z5 has in common is that it has the “stylish” speaker grill/gap at the top and bottom edge.

Z3 on the other hand has a speaker hole cut out right in the middle.

I am just hoping with the speaker hole cut out similarity on the upcoming F833X, the sound quality will be better.

  • jag

regarding the NFC placement, I think it is going to be a natural way if and only if you are going to tap it with your headphones. I am imagining it like you are just going to pick up a call. But with their other NFC products like speakers, cameras and the remote controller of the Bravia TVs, it is going to be real awkward! Though not that a big deal but it is just an unnatural way of pairing devices. Same goes when paying via android pay.

Again, not a big deal but it is quite awkward. But the way the NFC of my Z3+ is at the back of the phone. I don’t like doing the tapping action to my headset when in public areas wherein people around me can see the screen of my phone.

  • Timel

Yeah fingerprint scanner on the side of the phone is very cool and unique, I love it too but it must be redeemed by huge bezels so why Sony dont get ahead others by embedding its fingerprint scanner into the display of its flagship smartphones which Sony filed a patent 4 years ago

    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-17490629

  • Geese Howard

Hmm… I’m happy to see a new design and even a dual-LED flash… but this new design doesn’t give you the awe factor like most of Sony’s phones.. something a bit off about it. Hopefully with such a big fat phone comes with a big fat battery :)

  • Adhi Suryana

The back is now metal?? So sweet!

  • Ailan Hidaz

I’m probably in the minority, but I like the design. At least it’s somewhat different compared to all the rest of the xperia flagships (and most xperias in general) from 2015-2016.
I really hope this one is water resistant.

  • Ailan Hidaz

lol this was the most random comment ever.
But, I am intrigued – if this is “fat” then what and who would you call the HTC 10 or Moto X series? :D

  • Ailan Hidaz

I have average sized hands, and I have been able to use Z2/Z3/Z5/M4/M5 with a single hand. Not sure where you got the info that they are impossible to use with one hand…? Maybe it’s just you?

  • Ailan Hidaz

It really does look like a laser auto focus module, I hope that is the case!

  • deekbee

“Proper flashes” – these aren’t proper flashes. They’re mildly better than a single, but still give nothing like the illumination of a xenon.

  • deekbee

@davidbaptistasilva:disqus – one correction. You can’t play around with aperture on any mobile camera other than those Samsung Galaxy cameras or that Panasonic.

The Sony range, various Nokias, iPhones, Samsungs, etc all have fixed aperture.

  • Sadman Khan

I love the design. With you bro

  • Raj Singh

That bottom is for the Japanese model only…

  • iia3ezu

Cool phone, let’s hope it sells better than their predecessors.

  • iia3ezu

Sony’s problem has always been software. Lots of preloaded crapware, which cannot be removed without rooting the phone. Even non-Sony stuff such as MobiSystems’ File Commander (Free version).

Xperia Lounge and Socialife should be optional, if people want it they can download from Google Play.

And then there’s the mediocre camera problem. Which is really a software postprocessing problem.

Wake up Sony Mobile, or get out of the mobile industry.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Oh ok, based on teardowns of older phones. Samsung and LG seem to have a much more organized and simple to take apart PCB design than the Z series phones.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Why not make a magnetic attachment controller accessory like the Moto Z on an Xperia?

  • sommarkatt

Yeah, the aversion against bezels is pretty strange. I have big hands, yet I sometimes find myself accidently touching the 5″ Z2 screen with the foot of my thumb when using the phone with only one hand. Sure, it might look cool with no/minimal bezels, but as it probably would be less practical to use I’m pretty happy with my bezels.

Sony is probably able to make a gadget with no bezels at all, look at their TV:s, but it would require compromising with the quality of other features. And I prefer a better quality front camera, front facing speakers and sensors than a thinner bezels.

When I think about this, imagine what our phones might be like if we would accept them to be a little thicker. There would be room for bigger batteries and bigger camera sensors. I’d actually prefer a 10 mm phone to a 5 mm phone if it would give me a stronger battery and better detail on my photos. But no one would buy a thick phone so one can only speculate..

  • sommarkatt

Haha, my first thought was “powerbank” as well. Not that it’s necessarily is a bad thing, powerbanks look good, but I still love Omnibalance.

  • Matt

the grace and curse of new design. at least its new.

i dont know until i got my hands on it. like galaxy edge series , first i saw the design its abosolutely charming, but when i got my hands on it, its a garbage.

  • Matt

sadly IOS is unlikely , well lets hope for the best.
no software is the closest with stock android which is a great thing.
well sorry sony does not put a DSLR on the back of xperia just for you

  • Matt

yes sony did use camera API2 and it has 3 modes one of which (sony use that mode) does not enable manual mode and all that jazz.

they might be unable to do that on old camera sensor that weren’t designed for particular set of features , just because its open source does not mean i they can add things without breaking other things .

  • Matt

    hes just trolling.

  • Rizqi Angga

    back panel is uglyyyyyy

  • sommarkatt

My thoughts as well. But they can’t be that stupid, can they? Perhaps the NFC logo is supposed to explain where the chip is located at the backside, so that you don’t have to memorise it. It annoys me that the chip have a different place on different phones/tablets and I never remember where (I don’t use it that often). Even better, a NFC chip each on front and back? NFC chips are cheap, so I can’t see why that can’t be done.

  • (NinJer)

No, it really is on the front, like the other X series phones.

  • (NinJer)

No it really is on the front like the other X series phones.
It is however more ergonomically pleasing, but i don’t want to tap my screen onto other objects more often than necessary.

For example, hold an xperia phone with your right hand.
    Thumb on the fingerprint sensor.
    Arm out.
It’s more natural to have the screen facing downwards.

I think that was Sony’s idea, but backfired on them cause its more risk to the screen getting scratched.

  • KarFar

HA! look how people here were calling the Z3 ugly when it was first leaked.. We all know how it ended.

    http://i.imgur.com/OVYQ3MH.jpg how about this

is it different from before ? yes. does it have same elements? yes

  • Matt

hmm yea, we will see the final design later.

but even if sony stays with omnibalance, ill keep buying sony phones.
yep they are not the best and overpriced , but i like them :P

  • Ailan Hidaz

I just realised something – if Sony mobile is following all of the leaked designs from 2015, this means we have yet to see a phone that follows the “plate + human” and “glass” concepts. Could these be the next two flagships after whatever this “tube” phone releases?

  • Toni_Ai

    We’ll see)

  • DarkMaster

It’s SONY and therefore every product is probably gonna be overpriced … seeing people who supposedly use SONY products for years still bitching about the price is hilarious .

same here buying them for design and software , and if they stop for any reason to make phones I don’t know which phone could replace xperia , ausus is close but I don’t like the UI and few things regarding design like massive over 5.5 inches phones and capacitive buttons under the screen on newer models is not acceptable for me …also it lacks waterproofing and I got used to this feature too much .

people are bitching because xperia lacks few gimmicks like QHD screen , OIS and not having photos ready immediately for Instagram, fb ,Twitter etc ….they obviously want Photoshop built in mobile camera software LOL . they need to grow up bc SONY is corporation worth $160 billions and doesn’t give rats ass about few people complaining on this bolg .

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

I had no issue with sony xperia top and bottom bazel aslong it was not an empty space inside. Look at the z5 internal parts. https://plus.google.com/108938635632209602786/posts/RRf1XHA8NWZ

  • DarkMaster

Yes , the succesor to this will be be probably much better and refined .

yeah Standard S6/7 are better imo , but still garbage :D

  • DarkMaster

C5 successor is already out – XA Ultra .

and it basically goes like this :

Xperia C5 Ultra ———> XA Ultra

    Xperia M5 —————> Xperia X high end-midrange phone .

Xperia Z3+ ————–> Xperia X Performance (summer release of high end phone for japan market and selected markets globally)

Xperia Z5 —————> This device in the leak above which is TRUE flagship and announced once a year at IFA (probably coming with compact variant as Z1/Z3/Z5 did before ).

Xperia E4 —————-> Xperia E5 lower end budget phone .

Xperia XA —————-> new device and sits in between Xperia X and E5 as just normal midrange phone .

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Even it had low volume but still the clearity and quality not that bad for a waterproof device.

  • DBS

No, Sony has camera2api locked in its devices. And they don’t take advantage of it for their own software.
And it has absolutely nothing to do with hardware. Sony simply thinks their software is the best and to make sure no average Xperia owner notices it isn’t they prevent third party apps to have full access to the camera.

  • Edwin

    NO NO NO NO NO!
Please, no! I always have been a Sony fan, this is by far the worst design of them all. Why? This is going backward. The edges are horrible and the top and btm bezels are still massive. What am i gonna buy next after my z5? please don’t make me abandon Xperia. I’m starting to feel embarrassed to be a Sony fan after seeing this, very very disappointing…

  • DBS

Stock Android is absolutely worthless. So it’s not a great thing. If I wanted a bare boned Android experience I’d buy a Nexus. But no one wants that, which is proven by the very low sales of Nexus devices.

And Sony doesn’t need to put a DSLR in the back of the phone. They just need to put a good camera there like everybody else is doing instead of a camera that takes worse pictures than a 20 year old point-and-shoot.

  • DarkMaster

Z2 was better in everything besides marketing :D my point is that people are trying to find something to complain about like that 1GB of RAM disregarding the facts how much of that RAM each device will consume and how much is really needed .

regarding the chipset SONY probably started working on the Z3 before SD805 was out and same here , this device was spotted on gfx bench almost 2 months before SD821 was announced . Note7 is also probably coming with SD820 .

3GB is fine for 1080p resolution but 4GB would be awesome and that would be more than enough . 4GB for QHD is barely enough .

  • DBS

Dual-tone LED flashes are much better than the weak single LED flash currently present on Xperias. But yes, Xenon would be better. But only Nokia ever put those on phones.

  • DBS

Just because you’re too stupid to understand arguments or the concept of divergent opinions doesn’t make it trolling.

  • DBS

Yes, I’m aware of that. I was just talking about the advantages of manual mode generally.
That’s why I said nothing about aperture when giving examples of what could be done and only talked about ISO and shutter speeds. ;)

  • DarkMaster

DISGUSTING ! Home button and that camera layout is ugly ass f#ck !!

  • DBS

I have big hands and I don’t think phones over 4.6″ can be used with one hand. If your thumb doesn’t reach across the screen, it can’t be used. And most people value one handed use. Which has been proven again and again by smaller devices outselling phablets. For example, the Compact line from Sony constantly outsold the rest of the line. The smaller iPhone outsells the Plus and Apple can’t keep with the demand for the SE. Samsung’s S7 also outsells the Edge. Etc…

  • DarkMaster

nope , ever heard of Sony Ericsson CyberShot ? Sony Ericsson was first > K800i released in 2006 It had a 3.2MP camera with auto-focus, image stabilization, and a Xenon flash and had much success with those phones selling millions of units …. I think last SE phone with xenon flash was Satio U1 .

  • bun_ji

    Give this man a cookie!

  • Ailan Hidaz

Well I have been using all the main regular sized Xperias, along with the S phones from Samsung and the HTC One flagships, so never had any issue with 5-5.2″ screens with one hand.
5.5 is definitely not usable, but I can’t agree about Xperia Z5 and such.
And yes my thumb reaches all the way across the whole screen, so does that make me a giant?

  • DBS

Not across the screen from left to right. Across the screen from one bottom corner to the opposite top corner.

  • deekbee

You’re correct – lots of advantages to manual. On my DSLR (which happens to be a Sony!), full manual has some huge benefits.

Even on my older Nokias (808, 1020 and 930), they give a range of manual controls that Sony don’t seem to think is important. They also have decent image processing.

Sony do make some absolutely fantastic sensors and lenses – absolutely no doubt about it. On occasion my Z5C can come up with stunning results (close up of a butterfly a few weeks back), but a lot of the time the results are not that great. Sure, they’re okay – but nothing like as good as some of the reviews would claim.

  • Matt

yep there is no point freaking out about phone that ist on the market yet.

people are free to judge , i like xperia :P

  • Matt

couple of good points in there.

i think sony do care about what people think, they sold most of their devices to people :D

ASUS is loooowwww on my list, shitty UI , extreme amount of bloatware , bad looking hardware . for me personally ill only consider either nexus or sony for my next device.

have you tried VR? like google cardboard, QHD might find its usage there, but for me 1080p is not a dealbreaker. like you said, people are complaining instead of enjoying their products the bought with their hard earned cash, takes all the fun out .

YES sony is being ridiculous about their pricing , but funny thing is i find it hard to replace my z3, no other phone is as complete as it is. SONY is almost always like this , by far not the best spec wise (we all know that) but somehow it feels complete. all the pieces are there.

or im just a MASSIVE fanboy who is blinded.

  • Timel

Please focus at their Bezel-less design , that’s the main point bro

  • Ailan Hidaz

Im not an idiot, when I say one handed I mean one handed. I’m using all my phones and my thumbs go top to bottom.

  • Shane Falco

Now move the button out of display

  • Isvin Singh

yes Sony is overpriced. but it has everything i need. i will keep buying sony xperia. i find it very hard to replace my z3, my brother’s z2 and even my previous z1 which still functions without any problem.

  • M.Syafiq Sapiee

I am disappointed with the design… I like the design from Z, Z2,Z3+ and maybe Z5. I dont like the Iphonish speakers design and this design look like cheap… I hope this is just the prototype design for hardware testing. the good side, looks like there interchangeable batteries…

my advice, get Z3+ design, keep the speaker design, aluminium, match it with C5/XA bezelless screen, thinner top and bottom bezel, 5″ screen, thinner, and powerful hardwares that include best front and back camera, both with Led lights and image stabilizer and 4gb ram.

  • DarkMaster

wise man once said ” all those Bezel-less ideas are total craps ” .

  • Anukul

Now that is actually a different design, not just a small change to previous design. go go xperia

  • Dominik Engelmann

Yes of course I like them. But there is more than enough place to reduce those bezels.

  • P?tru Ionu?

This is like the Most awesome phone I’ve seen in a while. God damn it I love it

  • ruba

    Horrible top and bottom bezels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kefalin

I just really dont know why nobody wants to use new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that has been made by Qualcomm quite a long time ago. They really want to wait till Apple use that one first? And yes,i hate that big bezels too,if those speakers would be as awesome as those in HTCs before,i wouldnt care that much.

  • azzido

    who mentioned 300$?
If they will deliver what I want, I will pay for it 500 or 600$, if not, I will just skip it and wait for another Sony’s try or switch the brand if it will last too long. For example, I skipped X mid-rangers. I do not like design, too small screens, too little batteris, 3GB of RAM and few steps back like lack of official 4K recording, no radio etc. But still this is my opinion and my decision, anyone else can buy it if wants to.

  • Dark Terror

dont like the design its ugly, and it looks like some lg phone(doesnt remeber the name), z5 with frosted glass is miles better.

  • EQ

I say quite good not excellent. I would like a sleak clean look like the Z1, Z2 or Z3+. The back all one piece, glass or brushed aluminium. The sides aluminium or high quality coated plastic that melds into front and back with minimal height differences and form differences. The design as is is quite “noisy” IMO.

  • Emon Khan

I need At least this specification For an Ideal High End Smartphone

Display : 5.5″ HDR IPS 4K display bezel less

    2160×3840 (1.07millon colours, 806ppl)

Water resistance and dust shutter proof

    Camera :
Front : 21MP with led flash
Back : 27or higher with Xenon Flash
    GPU : snapdragon 821
    CPU : Octa core 2.5GHz

OS : Marshmallow or upper version

Colour : Black, White, Purple, Rose Gold, silver chrome

  • Alvin

Yeah, I would consider this phone as tall but not fat, though.

  • DBS

Sorry but I don’t believe you.

  • Ailan Hidaz

That’s great. I’m sure we all need your approval and judgment.

  • DBS

Yeah…except those was a response to the Nokia N90 launched a year earlier. And then Nokia launched the N73 in response to the K800i.
And well, in 2005-2006 Nokia still reigned supreme. Sony Ericsson phones were popular but nowhere near Nokia’s.

I don’t know which was the last Sony Ericsson phone with a Xenon flash but it’s also worth to point out that there was a radically change once Ericsson sold it’s mobile division to Sony and step out of the ruinous partnership.
The last phone to be launched on the market with a Xenon flash was the Nokia Lumia 1020. Xperia Z flagships however have always had the miserable single LED flash

  • DBS

We also don’t need your lies ;)

  • Ailan Hidaz

I dont need to lie to some random self appointed critic who thinks his opinion is fact.
Whether you believe it or not makes no difference to me, but claiming 4.6 is the tallest you can go for single handed use is ridiculous. Ask anyone else in the comments section.

  • (NinJer)

Do you want waterproof and fingerprint sensor or bezel less?
    Some people are dumb.
WATER FREAKING PROOF FRONT SPACING SPEAKERS for crying out loud. bezel less, heh.

  • (NinJer)

Ughh have you ever used a sony xperia phone? Those can be all uninstalled…
I keep most of them cause i’m a PS4 user and they integrate well.

  • Jer

  • (NinJer)

So waterproof front facing speakers isn’t good?

  • (NinJer)

I don’t like the placement of the NFC either.

  • (NinJer)

Exactly, I love my waterproof front facing speaker handles, where i can enjoy content on my phone instead of blocking the screen if it was bezel less!, You don’t?

  • DBS

I don’t need the “opinions” of people in comment boxes. Specially when they go against the laws of nature and simple physics and are nothing but self-justifying lies derived from Freudian problems ;)

  • Vincentius Phang

to put manner on his comment, I think what he says is “not everyone is a manual shoot buff”. Everyone that is “Manual Buff” would have a real camera anyway. that’s why OIS is needed in Smart Phone. Same thing as installing custom ROM, it’s not for everyone, hence Sony (and One Plus) campaign for software openness will never be as good as Samsung’s ready out of the box approach.

  • Vincentius Phang

sorry to blow your bubble, but have you checked that the “compact” line up sells better because of its size or because of its prize?

  • jag

I’m guessing that these would be their new colors. All sony audio products have these colors since they launched the H.ear series.

  • DBS

Except that’s not the reason. The price of the Compact wasn’t substantially lower than the normal Z line. People actively looked for the smaller variant because it was smaller. The iPhone SE isn’t cheap either and people still prefer it over the normal sized one. If you want to look at it from another perspective, it means that people don’t think size is important to warrant any extra cash. It means they rather have smaller phones that are cheaper than to pay for oversized ones.

  • Vincentius Phang

Z5 and Z5 Compact is almost $80 difference or 15% cheaper. I personally think its a substantial difference. on the other comment, have you done a survey on why people buying the compacts ? or at least you can show a research that someone doing it ? Because I had a friend bought the iPhone SE, and she said because its cheaper than iPhone 6S, not because its smaller. Well my friend is one person, maybe you have asked 100 people to jump into that conclusion ?

  • DBS

There are several reports from retailers about that. And you can always do as you did and ask in stores about it.

  • Vincentius Phang

can you show me where this report is? because I’m not convinced. iPhone arguably the most successful phone maker right now is enlarging their screen to meet market demand. And I believe they made more research than you who is just saying “there are report of this”. iPhone SE is made for the sake of cheap phone that doesn’t kill the flagship, hence the “compact” line up. Unless iPhone 7 & next year S8 will introduce a smaller screen, than you might be right. But you wouldn’t bet on it, would you?

  • Timel

wise man? lol NO! that man is absolutely bullshit if he said like that, bcus whatever your wise man said Bezel-less design means present days and will definitely be the future of smartphones

  • DBS

Clove reported it and you can also use this thing called “Google” ;)

“iPhone SE is made for the sake of cheap phone that doesn’t kill the flagship”

Again, the SE neither is a cheap phone and it’s a flagship. And the standard iPhone the one people buy more – is 4.7″. Not 5, not 5.2, not 5.5. It’s 4.7″. And it will remain 4.7 in the iPhone 7.
And the SE came out in the middle of the iPhone 7 development stage so I wouldn’t bet in a reduction of size on the 7 but I would actually bet it’s more likely to see it on the iPhone 7S (or 8) than an increase of size. Actually, sales reports (again, Google them) all show that the Plus version of the iPhone doesn’t sell as much.
Which, again, points that people prefer smaller phones. And that preference is clear regardless of the reason being one handed use or not wanting to pay more. If people don’t want to pay more for the extra screen size on the phone, it just shows that the screen size isn’t valued as a feature. Otherwise people would pay it as they pay for other things they deem valuable.

As for the Galaxy S8, we will see. But the S has been 5″ for years now. If there was any demand for a bigger screen, Samsung would have already released it as God knows they love to release phone after phone after phone.

Also, notice how Sony’s flagships have gone from 5.2″ to 5″? No? You should have. That alone should have given you already a clue that Sony decided to put the X line closer to the size of their Compact line rather than the regular Z sizes.

  • Timel

my taste was bad just because you dont like it?

whatever MOST people love small bezels
You can notice that the sale of edge model of Galaxy S6 and S7 series will always better than the standard model

but I pretty like Nubia, I lover their bezel-less design and unique and awesome software

  • dko3tgk

Everything is fine except the continuation of giant top and bottom bezels. The phones are getting bigger than the competition. I’ve been a Sony fan since it was still Sony Ericsson, but if you make the phones as big as a Galaxy Note but only have a 5″-5.2″ screen, maybe its time to go. I feel like Sonys are starting to look like early laptops with tiny screens and 4 inches of bezel surrounding it. Sony you cant make your flagship a two handed giant phone. Thats what the Ultra and Note lines are for. I may have to go Samsung for my next phone until Sony reigns in these top and bottom bezels. I mis my ZL small bezels more each passing year.

Is that laser autofocus above the dual led flash?

  • DarkMaster

both N70 and N73 had only LED flash so my point stands .

almost every phone now comes with those miserable LED flashes and be it dual or single makes not much of difference it’s trash compared to XENON .

SONY limits the brightness output of LED flash trough software on their flagship phones to get more pleasant natural photos while their midrange phones have much more brighter flash but it creates strong chroma noise and it’s not good for shooting in lowlight .

  • Emil Oskarsson

No you’re not a blind fanboy because I feel exactly the same way as you do. Take a galaxy s7 for example, horrible user experience due to the touchwiz UI, atleast when you are used to the Xperia UI. Awesome screen though and a pretty good camera sadly with oversharpening issues in great light conditions and oversaturated colours that makes it look like shit compared to x performance. So for me the x performance was the best choice of the two and between any phone actually xD

  • ludimilojko

Dude, how old are you? 11 or 12?

  • (NinJer)

You anwered your own question, no front facing speakers (DUAL LEFT /RIGHT)
    Hahaha you’re funny.

  • betatesterz

The leaked prototype doesn’t seem to fit any of the 4 colors. Or it could be just really bad lighting from the pictures..

  • DarkMaster

maybe they care about opinions about them as the company but they have their own stubborn way of doing things and no mater what we demand as customers if they think that what they are doing is right they gonna fallow that path for sure .

well I like ASUS for their laptops which are one of the best on the market and motherboard in my PC is also ASUS … so I looked into their phones as well and they do pack good hardware but exactly as you said their UI is utter shit and if they had stock android I would prefer them much more …design have some flows but it has potential – newest models that are all glass and metal and flat on the back https://s.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/midas/ae1fbb734d021c0f9f0a217a686e417d/203883151/ASUS-ZenFone-3-Family-text.jpg but camera layout is stupid and those capacitive buttons are unbearable and size is way too big ….. when it comes to nexus those are simply fugly imo especially that 6P with that periscope thing on the top…not to mention that is also a monster of 5.7” , google should beg SONY to make them a proper nexus phone :D

what we need for VR is not only higher resolution but also refresh rate …when it comes to that something like 4K Z5P with improved refresh rate to 120Hz all the way (Android supports only up to 60Hz) …but for everything else 1080p is more than enough on 6” or less .PERIOD .

no you are not blinded fanboy Xperia are most complete premium package and best balanced smartphones out there maybe not best in everything but second best in some fields is not bad either .

  • Peter Johansson

DIF är bättre ;) I used many Sony devices through the years and the last was the awsome Z5 premium (chrome). I was deeply disappointed when Sony introduced the X series. The only one I think looks good is the XA but it´s a middle range phone and I want high ends. But the X performance isn´t there… and the price! For the first time in many years I deserted Sony for a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and it´s not so bad. The design is very nice and the UI you can easy change between many many different themes that changes the UI looks a bit, to customize it how you want. Of course Samsung uploads a bunch of crap in the phone but so does Sony nowadays. I really hope that Sony can pull itself together and introduce something new in design, I am bit careful about to comment theese pictures yet, so I can change back to Sony. And before fanboys start jumping on me… I will not reply you! So go ahead and be how rude you usually are to people who not agree with you!

  • DarkMaster

you are a bezel freak ….

  • Matt

wow the zen phones looks quite nice . then again the software makes 65% of the phone. i tend to steer away from intel mobile chips , i do like asus and samsung for their computer department ,basically something that’s hidden in the background not to be seen because the design sucked hard , on the mobile side of things ? nope i do not consider asus at all. I did consider motorola, because you know pure android and great hardware , but moto z looks like a garbage , with that rectangular fingerprint sensor, i blame lenovo and their shitty influence on motorola beautiful design.

yea xperia nexus would be perfect , but our xperias are one of the closest devices to nexii. so im not complaining.

VR is quite important these days but not a necessity , 1080p is fine, 2k is also fine if they put battery on highest priority, 2k screen has been on the market for quite some time now im sure there will be optimization there .

THAT is the key point xperias are PREMIUM devices XD no wonder sony priced it highly .

  • Matt

hmm my opinion on a phone is , i would like my phone to do everything well the must be no excessive useless feature. coming from a samsung device to sony, really night and day.

yea but amoled still suffer from burn ins and if you look all s5 now , the screen is rather yellow. because the blue pixel dies overtime. wile my z3 still looks the same .

there are thing to copy from samsung, like wireless charging or OIS , or may be put the fast charger on the box and skip the shitty headphones, or extremely fast flash memory as internal storage . funny thing i cant think of anything else.

so you plan to get x performance ? nice :D ill probably get the next gen phone from sony. write us a review after you get it XD

  • jag

It could be bad lighting.. haha! But if you go in a sony store, you will see a lot of those colors and kinda like the color in the leaked photo above.

  • jag

    Like this! ; )

  • Emon Khan

    why do u think so?

  • jokensy

I don’t usually agree with you Timel, but I have to say that you’re right on this one. The top and bottom bezels are aiready huge, they could have at least reduced the side ones.

  • Timel

the black border around the display is fucking ugly
and rear camera layout is damn ugly

  • Timel

    I agree

  • Timel

it looks huge than it actually is that’s because its TOO HUGE BEZELS

  • Timel

but Bezel-less smartphone like S7 edge can has both waterproof and fingerprint sensor

    fyi

  • Alvin

Hey my phone has huge bezels too, maybe even bigger than yours. Yes, I like a phone with acceptable size of bezels, for example: my z3, so I could watch things with a wonderful experience without having to worry about blocking the speakers. It is that the bezel on that phone looks too huge from what i saw before.

  • Abdusselam ?ahin

Im will not accept a phone with on screen buttons i find them really ugly

  • DarkMaster

but not a front facing stereo speakers nor omni balance design also that fingerprint sensor is in inconvenient place so it doesn’t make a lot of sense also it’s got that stupid physical home button…S7 edge Bezel-less design creates more troubles in use then actual benefits it’s ”edge” brings .

it’s cool but the actual user experience in every day usage sucks . not so enjoyable experience as using xperia … standard S7 is better but still garbage.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

gsmarena said it look like lumia

  • DBS

Yet the cameras produced better results. A Xenon flash isn’t everything ;)

Phones come with LED flashes and, honestly, that’s enough. It encourages people to NOT use the flash. Specially since most of them don’t know how to use one.

As for Sony, their flash doesn’t give more pleasant natural colours though. It just makes everything as washed out as without the flash AND it doesn’t even illuminate anything. Sure, it’s effective as a deterrent from using flash. On the other hand, it makes up for a very sh*tty flashlight, something that MANY people use the flash for.

  • The problem with that Lumia is it was a bastardisation of the Nokia N9 which had a larger screen and no buttons. The bottom bezel contained the front facing camera and the screen ran closer to the curved edges of the glass so there wasn’t a lot of wasted space for the time (2011). The OS relied on swipes from the edges of the screen for multitasking instead of a home button and was an utter joy to use with the hardware it was designed for.

Unfortunately Nokia didn’t have the balls to go with their own OS and stuck Windows into a badly altered version of the N9 design reducing the screen width to fit the same ratio screen in with the buttons. I had an N9 and a Lumia 800. The N9 was leagues ahead better.

  • Matt

I don’t care if it looks like a pick axe. You lot are crying for new design and there it is,new for Xperia.

    Im content with omnibalance

  • ludimilojko

    Judging by your comment.

  • (NinJer)

Are you dumb? Fingerprint Sensor on front of phone, no thank you, I like it on the side, also the S7 doesn’t have dual front facing speakers, also if you love the S7 so much get it, I’m still waiting for my next Xperia phone.

  • (NinJer)

I don’t see dual front facing speakers with a fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone?
All I see there is touchwiz korean garbage.

    EDIT:
I also see backwards to Google’s back and context button, which google have stated that they want and should have the back button on the left side.

I also see no camera button.

  • The color is very cool and no company has this color which is a first. Right now, guys can only have a phone in White & Black but i find this color pretty good for guys.

  • Only ugliness i found is the bottom bezel and the thickness. Rest is cool, if only it was more sleek, it would be a really nice change from the X series.

  • Frosted glass is amazing, its a real fingerprint resistant.

  • There should be a bigger battery too, like 3500 to 4000 mah with 5 day battery. And yes, the color is refreshing. Im gonna get this color.

  • Then the X is like their portable HDD design, that brushed metal is taken from there actually.

  • d*ck pics are taken from rear camera not front.

That alone is the reason not to use Sony as benchmark of successful phone.

I know but I think it takes time to get used to that awkward position. I hardly use NFC to transfer since I got used to WiFi-Direct. But for the people who use NFC to pay bills all the time it’ll be just awkward if they have added multiple cards and all. :D

  • EQ

Maybe your boyfriend helps you with that else you need a mirror. Now 12MP IMX377 for front would be more than adequate. Same camera module as HTC10 for example.

Also for those who says that the phone is thick, I think it’s only marginally thicker than the Z3. Compare the thickness of the top frame using the size of the Audio Jack as a reference to the one on your Z3. You’ll noticed that there’s actually not that much difference. Because the top of the Z3 is rounded, thus making it look slimmer.

IMHO the only gripe i have right now is why would they put the NFC receiver on the front of the phone? That dosn’t even feel natural at all! =.=
…I’m assuming the person did not re-stick the NFC sticker.

It looks small in these pics

  • ryq24

NFC is awkwardly place in front. Fail.

would be nice to see one like walkman zx2!

Needs to be more drastic than this

hope the specs are good enough for an entire year. What I mean with this? They should release only one flagship model per year and focus on distribution and promotion. Reduce the amount of device releases per year and launch only one 5″ flagship model. one 7″ flagship phablet, one 4″ flagship compact model, one 10″ tablet and two low or mid-tier phone (one with 4″ screen and other with 5″ screen).

Also I Hope they stick with a common design language for at least 4 years. It’s really difficult to find accessories for a certain brand if they keep changing the body. Since Sony isn’t like Apple, there aren’t many manufacturers willing to make products to work with their phones, but if they stick with a common body size and shape for at least 4 years, then we should start seeing 3rd party manufacturers start making covers, audio equipment and other accesories compatible with Sony phones.

oh shut it. you got what you wanted . it will never be enough

  • Matt

    look sleek indeed

I hope we’ll get a flagship version with 5.5 inches or so.Sony released too many phones from 4.7 to 5.2.

  • jamie evans

“plate + human” concept design looks way much better than the tube one.

    My guess for IFA.

    A) Xperia ZR. 5.1″ FHD.
    B) Xperia ZR Compact. 4,7″ FHD.
    C) Xperia ZR Premium. 5,5″ 4K + HDR.

All will have SD821, 4K recording, waterproof metal body, fingerprint sensor, OIS 23 MPX back camera with increased number of phase detection focus points + OIS 13 MPX front (from XA ultra). G-master lens for improved sharpness compared to X-series.

X-range (normal + “Performance”) will be new upper mid-range. Prices reduced by 20% when XR is introduced.

    XA-range will be mid-range.

    E will be budget.

Well, the XA ultra has its nfc on the back again with a stainless steel back and no ugly lines in there. So there is a different solution. I guess this was all just rushed and not really thought throw which Sony does quite often.
I like Sony, they have nice phones and they look and feel really premium to, but sometimes they just rush through things and forget about some issues that can or will occur. The X line is definitely a step back from the end of the Z line in several aspects

this is example of what I’m talking about. An article from a trustworthy source : http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-7-breaks-pre-order-records-708863/ . apparently note 7 is very popular, even the most popular. Contrary to what you said that smaller screen have more demand. So if you do see any source stating smaller size is currently more popular, please share. Don’t just randomly throwing “you’re stupid, go find it, its everywhere”.
